-40 is an incredibly unique CD and DVD project that gathers together artists like Akufen, Deadbeat, Venetian Snares, Knifehandchop, Secret Mommy, Lowfish, and DMC World Champion DJ Dopey to reconfigure old school propaganda films with new school digital tools. The internationally renowned National Film Board of Canada opened its vaults to 20 Canadian artists, 10 audio and 10 video, who were given the challenge to re-interpret either the audio or visual element of 1940s era Canadian propaganda films produced in the early years of the NFB. Using digital means, the artists rework the textured analogue source material to create some daringly original works. The audio artists are featured on the CD as well as their tracks appearing on the DVD as new soundtracks to accompany unadulterated portions of their chosen source film. The audio tracks are equally as compelling as soundtracks and tracks for the dancefloor. Like propaganda itself, this project straddles art and popular culture. With world war once again on the international agenda, these works are timely reflections upon nationalism, the evolving political art of propaganda and social manipulation, racism and the economics of war.Need more info? Canada had their propaganda films during WWII as did most of the rest of the world. Here we are presented with a CD of reworked audio on a CD(made into breakbeats and fairly hard techno) and a DVD of this audio set to unmodified video. As the video isn't re-edited in this segment, the only original audio or synchronicity between the audio and picture is at the beginnings and ending of songs, otherwise, these are kinda just old films set to good techno. Some bands I have never heard of are presented here and a a few other bands that I have heard of, although they haven't achieved a lot of fame and rounding it all out is the band Venetian Snares. Don't let the obscure names make you think this is small time music. Complicated rhythms, akin to Autechre, fun melodies and surprisingly good breaks are here with an occasional record-scratch song. There is another section of the DVD that has reworked video set to the original audio. Some of the videos are super abstract, others are arty, some have fancy graphics and others are kinda simple After Effects stuff(cool but not that complicated). I guess it would be cool to have a third version where both the video and audio are messed with so you get something totally new. Lots of work went into this, it shows, and this is definitely a unique item.
