Antoine Chessex - Antoine Chessex CD (NaivSuper) [nasu013]
$13.00
When we (naivsuper) met Antoine in november 2007 to record his
saxophone
drones we didn´t really know what to expect because Antoine´s
drones are
perfect in a live situation. We weren´t sure if we could capture the
richness of his sound, his working with the accoustics of a room and the
strange almost discomforting breathing noises he makes when circular
breathing on a CD. We basically wanted to hear him moving in the room, we
wanted to see with our ears. And we can! There is the room, the breathing
and his movement. There is sound - almost an evolution of sounds - they are
born slowly, grow up and then disappear or extinguish. We highly recommend
you to listen with headphones. A follow up to this great document is
planned, too. coverart: Stephane Leonard
Christophe Bailleau - La Lude / La Sonde CD (NaivSuper)
[nasu008] $13.00
La Lude / La Sonde was composed for the performance ´La
Sonde´ by
Christophe Bailleau and Martine Viale. The performance was held at the city
sonics festival 2006 (Mons, Belgium) and at Le festival d'avignon from July
10th to 20th 2006. "... Bailleau is a man who likes acoustic sounds - they
dominate this release, certainly in the first half. It's mainly guitar but
also concrete sounds and everything that happens in terms of digital
processing happens in the background. The second half is more a trip into
ambient glitch land... Combining real instruments and digital processing is
of course not something new, but Bailleau does a really great job at
it...." (Frans de Waard) "Atmospheric electro-acoustic compositions weaving
a series of three-dimensional animated textures of a strong capacity of
tactile evocation, exploring the flexibility of continuous fabrics that
evolve, unfold and eventually become backcloths, or creating a space for
acoustic guitar (at the front) - eventually surrounded by the tubular
surface of a continuously moving cloth. The theatrical underlines its
function as a movement-based expressive support, truly exploiting the
possibilities of sound weaving. The cloth is not finished, but rather
presents a work in progress character, the various threads waiting to be
sewn onto the edges. Again, the inclusion of the guitar establishes a
certain bridge with the bodily, allowing to establishment a central
character that contributes to break away from the sedate mood of the
familiar." (modisti.com) coverart: Claudio Pfeifer (handmade silk screen
prints)
Dania Shapes - Soundsystem Pastoral CD (NaivSuper) [nasu007]
$13.00
Soundsystem Pastoral was recorded by Daniel Lopatin aka Dania Shapes
during
the winter of 2004 using synthesizers, a first generation digital
sequencer, and a freeware sound editor. It was remixed in 2006 for the
release on naivsuper. Celebrating the potential of amateurishness,
decadence and romance in the realm of digital audio arts, Lopatin looks to
marry the aesthetic sensibilities of experimental electronics with his
allegiance to the classic 'beauty' in music. 'Glitch' is less a process for
Lopatin -- rather it is an aesthetic impression which Lopatin emulates by
hand. Pairing the residual effects of romantic, heart string melodies with
steroidal, detailed, maximalist noise, Dania Shapes' audible bricolage is a
tribute to both the beautiful and the broken all at once. The music is
clearly indebted to heroes of electronica such as Christian Fennesz,
William Basinski, and Brian Eno; and it has links to classic
experimentalists such as David Tudor and David Behrman. Yet Lopatin
maintains a more song-based musical position that results in an accessible
product that will attract fans of ambient, post-rock, and experimental
music. coverart: Stephane Leonard (handmade silk screen prints)
Dis.playce - Das Ende von Amerika CD (NaivSuper) [nasu010]
$12.00
"Das Ende von Amerika" (The End of America) is dis.playce's second
release
on naivsuper. The title refers to the book "Amerika" by Franz Kafka and
should not be interpretated in a wrong way ; ) "Amerika", also known as
"Der Verschollene" or "The Man Who Disappeared", was the incomplete first
novel by Franz Kafka, published posthumously in 1927. The story describes
the bizarre wanderings of a sixteen-year-old European emigrant named Karl
Rossmann in the United States, who was forced to go to New York to escape
the scandal of his seduction by a housemaid. Hope originates when something
else is absent and holes need to be filled again. The purpose of hope is to
make itself vanish again and to reach a state of mind where Utopia or the
promised land of North America won't be needed anymore. Kafka puts his hero
Karl Rossmann over and over again in situations where he is lacking
something only to discover that he is lacking even more. The spiral of
hope, disappointment and reproaches seems to be endless. With "Amerika"
Kafka finishes a series of America-fiction from the 19. Century which
glorified the United States as the land of boundless possibilities. With
Kafka America is not the solution of our problems anymore, it is almost
like a second Europe - a land where the problems stay the same. "Das Ende
von Amerika" is one 24 minute piece of amazing electronic glitch, drones
and minimal moments. dis.playce is a very self-conscious composer duo
who´s
compositions are leading the dusty genre of electronic "Neue Musik" into
the 21st century. coverart: Stephane Leonard
Dis.playce - R CD (NaivSuper) [nasu004] $19.00
Wild and adventurous - thousands of spirals falling apart shattering
crisply like glass on concrete constantly rebuilding themselves.
Reminiscences of jungle music, overwhelming and mesmerizing. Extrinsic at
first becomming confident more and more. Fieldrecordings, communication
between sounds of future cities in dependence on the tradition of
contemporary music and musique concrete... R is a fulminate debut. The
creation of the album took three years and illustrates the artistic
development of the young composerduo. Every track is based on a unique
theme like a phenomenon, a musical shape. Be it a self imposed restriction
to certain sound materials, be it a technical process or a special working
method, they all express dis.playce´s genuine concern for atmosphere
and
feeling. dis.playce started working in 2002 mainly with sound material from
an old analog synthesizer, which was then processed digitally. Two pieces
are almost completely made of concrete sounds. The latest tracks are based
on the experience of live concerts, the communication between sounds, room
and audience. They are completely digital made using custom software. R is
diversified, versatile, playful and very fragile even though it has a well
balanced compositional strength. "The cover design of shattered typography
that spreads like shards of broken glass or chunks of shrapnel perfectly
describes the musical contents within - an ingenious collage of glitch,
ambience and noise. Seamlessly assembled by Maximilian Marcoll and Hannes
Seidl, R´s nine sections switch from full force electro boost to
dripping
tap, laptop sound sculpting in mere seconds. Emotions are tossed like
salad, while sounds are explored and blended into a heady cocktail of mixed
moods and itchy atmospherics. Dis.playce displace twist the accepted
formula of contemporary electronic music into another, more ungainly
contortion." (The Wire - Edwin Pouncy) coverart: Stephane Leonard, Claudio
Pfeifer, Martin Eichhorn
Leo
Mars - Lightears CD (NaivSuper) [nasu011] $13.00
"lightears" is the long awaited debut album by Berlin duo LEO MARS.
After a
year of trial and error, a lot of sessions, sound collecting and
analysation of possibilities a precisely crafted, yet astonishingly free
floating album came to life. In times of almost infinite sounds,
instruments and styles it took the duo some time to come up with the basic
material, form a language and then of course learn to speak it. Hours were
spent in the studio and their favourite lebanese restaurant discussing the
world of sound. "lightears" intelligently smudges the borders between a
classic drone, an underground noise, a playful improvisation and an old
fashion musique concrete record. All the genres fall into place rather
unpretentious - pure sound excitingly assembled to challenge ones listening
habits. A harsh production always bouncing back and forth between digital,
crisp electronics and field recordings pushed way over the edge. With a
rather minimal gear and set up LEO MARS managed to manoveur themselves
somewhere inbetween a bedroom thrashing noise keyboard project and a
theoratical paper score composer duo. Performing in a trance - allowing
things to happen - awaken - making a conscious decision - slipping back
into space. coverart: Stephane Leonard
Olaf Hochherz - Pets CDEP (NaivSuper) [nasu009] $12.00
PETS are just 5 pieces of a CD or the attempt to describe a sound-based
form of life. Stuck inside a niche between nature and culture, acoustic
inhabitants of "nature-culture-land", hairy little things made out of dust
who wander around without reason and suddenly drop dead completely
unexpected. They have to be pushed but sometimes move by themselves, they
can speak sometimes fast and sometimes rather slow and then again cuddle up
in silence pretending not to be here. They could also be sound creatures
from the world of Microrobotics who speak to us without communicating,
glitching transistor noises in between loudspeakers – no more
– no less.“
(Olaf Hochherz) coverart: Olaf Hochherz
Stephane Leonard - Hortheater CD (NaivSuper) [nasu003]
$13.00
The record was produced between 2001 and 2004 (the earliest soundpieces
were taken from sessions that he recorded on cassettes in 2000 and 2001).
´Hörtheater´ was mainly recorded with a computer but
is completely analogue
at the same time. All instruments were played live and only went through a
few classic modulations. It is a very quiet almost an ambient album that
can create a warm closeness or never ending distance (depending on ones
personal mood). The numerous layers of sound, shy harmonic drones and
repetetive melodies can develop into a cozy thickness only to move on into
a cold and wide norwegian highland. A strong longing for harmony, gentle
whispered sounds and tiny loops grow within the pure love for sounds and
experiments. coverart: Moritz Tredup
Suspicion Breeds Confidence - The Fauna and Flora of the
Vatican City CD (Gruenrekorder) [Gruen052/08] $21.70
The "Fauna and Flora of the Vatican City" is the 6th release of Tobias
Schmitt’s pet project Suspicion Breeds Confidence. The record is
a
continuation and development of the eclectic and complex music presented on
its predecessors: polyrhythmic beats, abstract electronica, processed field
recordings and conventional instruments are blended into a homogeneous and
wide-ranging elaborate result. Moments of highly structured music meet
flow-of-consciousness like improvisation meet poppy melodies. The titles of
the tracks are as surreal and beautiful as ever.
Tetsuya Hori - Tetsuya Hori CD (NaivSuper) [nasu012] $13.00
“My compositions have no concept. That's my concept. I just
see them as a
tool that stirs up the minds or consciousness of the people listening. I've
never felt that a performer did injustice to my pieces, for a composition
only comes to life in the particular context, the combination of the
performer and the atmosphere of the public. I like to compose not only for
instruments, but for "things" as well. Sound of things can be surprising,
especially their artificial sound. For example, without looking, one would
never guess that my tapping and dragging fingers across the surface of a
cigar box that is connected to a laptop for what it is.”
(Tetsuya Hori)
This wonderful CDR includes 3 compositions by Tetsuya Hori: for beer bottle
and laptop (16:04) // for glass of water and laptop (19:52) // for flute
and laptop (17:37) coverart: Christian Weber
Various Artists - Stock 11 CD (Naiv Su[er) [nasu005] $18.00

by
the young german composer collective stock11. Every piece is an original

6Blocc - Analog Clash 2CD (Lodubs) [LODUBS8001CD] $14.50
"Lo Dubs is pleased to present 'Analog Clash,' their first compact
disc,
mixed by LA's 6Blocc, and destined to become the Rosetta stone of the
dubstep sound emanating from all regions of the Americas. From Toronto by
way of DZ, Bombaman, XI, and the doom metal group Nadja (remixed by Vex'd,
an exclusive to this release), to Venezuela via Pachecko and Cardopusher,
and back to the middle with Philadelphia's own Starkey and the mighty
South3rn of Texas, all the earth encompassing the two continents is
represented in a release that may very well be the first of its kind to
represent the movement on this side of the pond. \"
Accidental, The - There Were Wolves CD (Thrill Jockey)
[THR199CD] $12.75
RELEASE DATE: 06-03-2008
"Take the man behind The Memory Band and Trunk Records (Stephen
Cracknell),
the twisted songwriter from Tunng main man (Sam Genders), one half of Fence
Collective duo The Bicycle Thieves (Hannah Caughlin) and singer-songwriter
Liam Bailey. Put them in front of a PC and add occasional input from guests
including harpist Serafina Steer and Rob, Jenny & Nancy from the Memory
Band. "
Aethenor - Betimes Black Cloudmasses CD (VHF) [VHF111]
$12.00
The highly-anticipated second album from VINCENT DE ROGUIN (SHORA),
STEPHEN
O'MALLEY (SUNN0))), KTL), and DANIEL O'SULLIVAN (GUAPO). Like their genre
confounding debut Deep In Ocean Sunk the Lamp of Light, Betimes is an
atmospheric, constantly changing piece that encompasses a mind-boggling
array of different performance and processing techniques. The deeply
psychedelic and moving results present a soundstage that is continually
evolving, with new elements entering and leaving the fray every couple of
seconds. Includes significant contributions from free percussionists
NICOLAS FIELD and ALEX BABEL, who sprinkle the sound field with an almost
FMP-style rush of splattering drum sound, raising the intensity of the
music (without resorting to bashing). The album also features a brief but
affecting vocal from ULVER mastermind KRISTOFFER RYGG, who will make his
first live appearance in over a decade when AETHENOR plays the Roadburn
Festival in April 2008. Aethenor's third LP, featuring vocals and lyrics by
David Tibet, will be released in Autumn 2008.
Andrew Liles & Jean-herve Peron - Fini! CD (Dirter Promotions)
[DPROM062CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
Introducing the debut collaborative release from sometime Nurse With
Wound/Current 93 member, Andrew Liles and Jean Herve Peron of Faust.
Neither of these artists needs any introduction and all expectations are
overtaken with this incredible album. Here is something that sounds like
both a Krautrock album and also like nothing else you can imagine. Its
twists and turns keep surprising and thrilling you several listens on from
the first. The words "classic" and "masterpiece" would not be out of place
here. Both Faust and NWW are touring all over the world in 2008, and the
profile for both of these legendary acts has never been higher. This
release is packaged in a gloss-laminated digipack, with beautiful artwork
by Liles.
Asthma - Live Before 99 CD (Aryan Asshole) [CDASTHMLive]
$9.00
The source material for this release is a live recording of a project
called MR. ASTHMA from sometime before 1999. Originally an improv jam
session on Detroit public radio, this updated mutation by NATE YOUNG (WOLF
EYES) consists of tape manipulation, reeds, brass, cello and strange,
metallic loops completely restructured to sound ancient. Sort of a
collaboration a decade later.
Beans - Thorns CD (Adored And Exploited) [AAE001] $15.00
The latest from ANTI-POP CONSORTIUM member BEANS (aka MR. BALLBEAM),
hip
hop rebel, wordsmith extraordinaire, sonic architect, fashion renegade and
published poet. Written during a tumultuous two year period between his
last albums which scanned a combined 14,500 sales, Thorns is more
straightforward and emotional in content yet more textured and dense in
production. Guest producers include DABRYE and TYLER, and there are three
collaborations with HOLY FUCK.
Bruno Pronsato - Why Can't We Be Like Us CD (Hello? Repeat
Records) [HELLO010CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-13-2008
This is the second full-length release by Seattle's Bruno Pronsato
(Steven
Ford). Why Can't We Be Like Us embodies his old passion for playing the
drums as well as his addiction to ones and zeros. Instead of creating
streamlined minimal, he has more of an abstract sound on his mind - one
that lives on a dark, organic and percussive note. He has always been
unpredictable and funky with a twist between the beats, his tracks often
relying on devious turns, flickering sounds, warm bass lines and some
free-riding vocals.
Burning Star Core - Challenger CD (Hospital Productions)
[HOS216CD] $13.50
No description available at this time.
Cheveu - Cheveu CD (Born Bad) [BB010] $14.50
NOW AVAILABLE ON CD!!! A couple years ago, S-S had the pleasure of
turning
the record freak world onto CHEVEU with their Dog 7-inch, followed by the
Tete de Bebe comp LP. The label also helped dement the world by distroing
their next two singles and putting out their split 7-inch with Tyvek. And
now they are very very very happy to present this Parisian trio's debut
album, simply titled Cheveu. This dad is chock full of these Frenchmen's
unique take on punk rock & electro, kind of like a bastard mating of Trio,
Stockhausen, and King Coleman-or at least that challenging. But Cheveu
don't lose the song in their experimentation. Imported from France.
Chris Mills - Living In The Aftermath CD (Ernest Jenning)
[EJR038] $11.75
RELEASE DATE: 04-22-2008
***The latest collection from one of America's most wandering-est of
wandering troubadours. After almost a decade of rave reviews and countless
shows in stadiums and shoeboxes (the past two years alone have seen him
touring alongside Ben Folds, Bishop Allen, Lucero and many more).
Harvesting music and lyrics from headlines, horror movies, four-color
ashcan adventures, and the black & white reflections of late night
re-reruns, Mills returns with a raw and ready collection of true
rock'n'roll numbers, each one peppered with knowing asides and unencumbered
poignancy.
Chris Tietjen - Drei CD (Cocoon) [CORMIX020CD] $14.75
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
No description available at this time.
COH
(Ivan Pavlov + Cosey Fanni Tutti) - COH Plays Cosey CD (Raster Music)
[RASTER091CD] $16.00
COH Plays Cosey is the first part of an ongoing collaborative project
between Stockholm's Ivan Pavlov/COH and the UK's Cosey Fanni Tutti, known
for her solo performances and work with Chris Carter/CTI as well as for
being a part of the radical cultural phenomena COUM Transmissions and
Throbbing Gristle. Very much a statement rather than just a musical
venture, COH Plays Cosey deals with concepts of honesty, trust, privacy and
communication as well as (perceptions of) sexuality. The work represents a
very close contact between the two, where one (Ivan) was to interpret voice
recordings made for him by the other (Cosey) - recordings made in intensely
emotional states to establish a dialogue that extends beyond words, beyond
intellect. A most private emotional diary of one (Cosey) pronounced to the
general public by the other (Ivan). The work has been kept hermetic by Ivan
voluntarily restricting his choice of sound exclusively to that originating
from the voice recordings, thus preserving the raw quality of his source
material. In this explicit sonic adventure, COH plays Cosey without
inhibitions, without fear and without questioning the content submitted.
COH plays Cosey like an actor - becoming her through his elaborate
transformations of the voice. COH plays Cosey like a computer game - making
his way though the infinite combinations and variety of human expression
with ease and a sense of fun. COH plays Cosey like sex - fully controlling
the process and manifesting the eventual outcome. COH Plays Cosey is the
embarrassingly unspoken made audible, COH Plays Cosey is the place where
there is nothing left to hide.
Conrad Ford - Secret Army CD (Tarnished) [TAR0812] $11.75
RELEASE DATE: 04-22-2008
***Referred to as "outcast country," these songs are a collection of
stories detailing battles for hope and companionship. Woven from the
perspectives of lone travelers, felons, family men and mountain
climbers-their execution sways from folkish, Townes Van Zandt-like ballads
to the more fuller Flying Burrito Brothers-inspired, laid-back country
rock.
Crow Tongue - Red Hand Mark CD (Hand / Eye) [H/E036] $12.75
RELEASE DATE: 04-22-2008
***The Red Hand Mark closely mirrors the CROW TONGUE live sound. The
bones
of this sound are guimbri-banjo (a bass banjo based on a Morroccan lute),
hand-drums and vocals. Their live sound has been called everything from "a
more tribal Neurosis" to "Appalachian Doom." Crow Tongue worships the
groove, plowing out raw and primitive, dark tribal earth and spirit songs.
Featuring members of STONE BREATH
Death Set - Worldwide CD (Counter) [COUNT012] $13.25
Straight out of Baltimore's bustling music scene, THE DEATH SET
splatters
punk rock all over warehouse dancefloors with their debut release on
Counter Records, Worldwide-a blast of fleeting songs with lifelong hooks
and overdriven melodies. Filling twenty-five minutes with eighteen jams,
Worldwide boasts the noise of unrefined creation. The secret to The Death
Set's charm is in their denial of the nihilism in punk rock. With breakneck
fuzz atop lo-fi electronics, searing vocals over-scored by a lift of
positivity, The Death Set redefine the space of the anthem, and take it
Worldwide. "They make the Libertines look like Dire Straits.... Original
entertaining and fun."-Vice. No exports outside the US and South America
Eric Burdon & The Animals - Winds of Change CD (Rev-ola)
[CRREV246CD] $15.25
"In these more cynical times, it is easy to see this seminal album in a
somewhat ambivalent light. Everybody's favourite Geordie hellraiser, Eric
Burdon caught on the cusp between being Britain's bluesmeister supreme and
being Hitler out of The Producers? Surely not! We at RevOla see the funny
side alright, but this is a brilliant album, have no doubts. Intriguing,
controversial notes by acclaimed psych historian David Wells. A must for
all students of social history AND lovers of crazy psych freakout - can you
get better than that?"
Falko Brocksieper - Heavy Day CD (Sub Static) [SUS072CD]
$16.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
Berlin-based Sub Static co-owner Falko Brocksieper presents his second
full-length release on his label. After a remarkable number of EPs and
remixes, Heavy Day is chock-full of tough and tasty techno. Brocksieper is
always king of the hill on his tracks, sovereignly dominating beats and
melodies, again and again transferring it all into his trademark airy,
funky groove. In addition to floor-pushers like "Lament" and "The Whole
Story," Heavy Day also features a great portion of organic organ-house,
plucked violin-techno and pleasant dub-tronica. Also featured on this
release are stellar guest vocal performances from Richard Davis, Big Bully
and MIA. On Heavy Day, Brocksieper spins out true techno heaviness while
still retaining an austere minimalist gesture.

Grey Daturas - Return To Disruption CD (Neurot) [NR057]
$13.25
Melbourne, Australia's GREY DATURAS are an improvisational,
instrumental
trio with no songs or melodies; they don't rehearse, yet maintain a touring
ethos that matches early hardcore pioneers. Drawing influence from a vast
ocean of musical styles including free jazz, the avant garde, psych, punk,
metal, industrial, and noise, the band's blend of harsh and dark
psychedelia unmistakably their own. From their nihilistic,
sheer-noise-based beginnings six-plus years ago improvising soundtracks to
silent horror classics and '60s physics animations, Grey Daturas have
morphed into a surreal auditory nightmare, blending dark, pulsating drones,
slow, low-end sludge riffs, crushing percussion, and walls of ear-torturing
noise. Three and a half years after the release of their globally acclaimed
second album, Dead in the Woods, and following numerous EPs, split and
collaborative releases with the likes of Yellow Swans, Monarch, Bardo Pond,
and Wolf Eyes, Grey Daturas unearth their finest and most challenging
work.Mastered by SCOTT HULL (PIG DESTROYER). No exports to the UK and
Europe
Hair Police - Hair Police CD (Hospital Productions) [HOS085ACD]
$13.50
"This CD collects the early Hospital cassette, the Mortuary Servants 7"
and
unreleased material from the Drawn Dead era. Total basement dirge hell."
Hatred - Sciatica CD (Aryan Asshole) [CDHATREScia] $8.75
"The last couple weeks I've had a hard time walking. This tape
represents
sciatic nerve problems: the inability to walk, numbness of the limbs, sharp
pain and the realization that you can damage yourself without even moving.
Not a light topic, not an easy listen. Four tracks of slow, traumatic
movements made with a UHER 4200."-NATE YOUNG (WOLF EYES)
Jacaszek - Treny CD (Miasmah) [MIA007CD] $14.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
Michal Jacaszek's Treny is the seventh release from Norway's Miasmah
label
- a label that has already created a unique and distinctive identity for
itself through a string of releases existing on the darker side of the
musical spectrum - each artist shares a similar aesthetic and a penchant
for introspective, lamenting, classically-influenced music. With this in
mind, no better home comes to mind for Poland's Jacaszek..
Jack Dangers - Music For Planetariums CD (Brainwashed)
[HAND006] $10.25
JACK DANGERS, the Godfather of dubstep, returns this year with
Autoimmune,
the tenth album as MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO, immediately followed by extensive
North American and European touring. Music for Planetariums, the third
full-length release as Jack Dangers consists of music recorded, as Jack
describes, "under a quilt at night" for the T.I.T. Planetarium in Budapest.
The release is the sixth in Brainwashed's Handmade Series and like the
others, comes in a letterpress sleeve created by MICHAEL BABCOCK of
Interrobang Letterpress.
Jack Rose - Dr. Ragtime & His Pals/Jack Rose 2CD (Beautiful
Happiness) [HAPP010] $14.50
This double-disc features a brand new album from Philadelphia guitarist
JACK ROSE along with his highly acclaimed and out-of-print self-titled
record (originally a limited release on the Archive Recordings label). On
Dr. Ragtime & Pals, Rose duets with GLENN JONES, MICAH SMALDONE, MIKE
GANGLOFF, HARMONICA DAN, and SEAN BOWLES. This is a major work from a big
player in the modern American Primitive world, often compared to the likes
of John Fahey. No exports to the UK and Europe

assisted by members of the band Epic45 (Antony worked on their 2006 album
May Your Heart Be The Map) who have both previously received airplay from
the late John Peel and Rob Da Bank of BBC Radio 1 and also by Verity Sharp
of BBC Radio 3. Both bands are part of the truly independent UK label
collective Make Mine Music, who are heading towards their 50th release in
autumn 2008. The Weather Clock is July Skies 4th album and the follow up to
their critically acclaimed 2004 album The English Cold. Musically, think
The Durutti Column, the sensitivity of 80's indie bands like The House of
Love, the guitar work of Maurice Deebank (Felt) or Robin Guthrie (Cocteau
Twins), Harold Budd, or even a modern reference to British Sea Power if
they 'didn't like rock music'. The Weather Clock is inspired by a lost
post-war Mid-20th century Britain and a fixation with the design and
architecture of the period. The beauty in the newly built regimented
housing estates and clipped front gardens-- It is the sound of the empty
school hall once the summer holidays had commenced....faded branch line
summers where steam met diesel.....the sound of the first swallows across
the fields on fresh dew drenched mornings in May.....the nothingness of
weekday afternoons with the lightness of a breeze through the window and
billowing curtains--.hearing the distant sound of children playing in
fields far from the estate-- the sound of BBC broadcasts closing down and
displaying the TV test card for the afternoon whilst the country continued
to work, play or learn....this is all the sound of The Weather Clock. The
album is released in CD digipack with 1950's period artwork by Andersen M
Studio. The first 350 copies ordered from the Make Mine Music on-line shop
come with a limited 7 track ep of exclusive and alternative tracks.
M's, The - Real Close Ones CD (Polyvinyl) [PRC153-2] $13.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-17-2008
of Montreal, Aloha, and The M's are three bands that have one thing in
common --wherever they go or whatever they release, critical praise is sure
to follow. Real Close Ones is the third album from Chicago's The M's. Born
from the band's passage through the world as musicians, men, fathers,
husbands, and sons, Real Close Ones is a gorgeous testament to life.
Guitars might have the angularity of 'And Your Bird Can Sing', the flash
and crash of 'Pictures Of Lily' and a general freakbeat crackle-- Melodies
twist and turn, strings phase in and out, bells chime. All this ambition
coagulates into an irresistible, tumbling, tune filled whole. -MOJO. The
four M's call Chicago home, but with their fuzzy riffs and psychedelic
melodies, they could be mistaken for a bunch of British tunesmiths by the
names of Ray Davies, Damon Albarn, Marc Bolan, and John Lennon. ~VSpin. The
M's capture that glorious moment when the British Invasion bands of the
'60s were still grappling with their love of R & B while flirting with the
more sophisticated harmonies and hooks of classic pop songwriting. -Greg
Kot, Chicago Tribune.

Object - Asobi CD (Sensory Projects) [spr052] $14.75
A new project from Lawrence English (Room40). From an observer's
perspective, 'Asobi' is a brilliantly succinct album which appears inspired
by sounds made and/or manipulated by a laptop computer in the tradition of
Christian Fennesz, Oval's 'Diskont94', Jan Jelinek, and even My Bloody
Valentine's seething 'Loveless'. 'Asobi' (which is a Japanese word meaning
'play') is reminiscent of the warm digital clicks'n'cuts of the mid-to-late
'Nineties when the only brazenness left in contemporary music was coming
out of Austria and Germany in the form of Mouse On Mars, Oval, Pita,
Fennesz, and later Jan Jelinek and Radian. The brooding waves of 'Asobi'
are enticing and are enhanced by the addition of a brooding undercarriage
of subtle touches; bleeding and also biting clicks and motions which sizzle
and pulse with ebbing and flowing patterns. The flickering crispness of
tracks like 'Be so' and '(Before)', and the evolving shapes of 'Having been
you' are deliciously executed by Object, so much so that they appear
somehow otherwise 'natural', thus English's suggestion (one guesses) that
'Asobi' sits "outside" the world of field recordings and contemporary sound
art. Driving the pieces even further away from such an inference of
experimentation is 'Asobi's subtle rhythms which, as on 'Did they speak'
and the closing track 'Noshi on land', are less suggested than they are
part of the horizon which English lines up against. The result being music
which occasionally gravitates towards the textural ambience of Pretty Boy
Crossover, Qua, or Third Eye Foundation. "Object is an infrequent but
ongoing project.." explains Lawrence English, the man and the musician
behind Object. In describing where Object exists musically, Lawrence
explains that Object "..sits outside the more textural field recordings and
sound artwork realm. This album (is) based on percussion, organ, and other
instrumental compositions; the source files of which were lost, so many of
the pieces are edited and re-worked from rough mixes of the original
pieces: like echoes of the originals, all be it distant ones." There's
definitely a warmth and an enveloping which lingers throughout 'Asobi', and
this is prominent over and above any abstraction which exists. As Object,
Lawrence English has created the beginning of what may well be a beautiful
strain of music which relies as much on familiarity and memory as it does
solid musical fact to engage and transport listeners to a place of calm and
intrigue. 'It's all quite low-key, yet that is precisely its charm..' Bob
Baker Fish ~V Inpress magazine. 'This is laptop music from created from
recordings of acoustic instruments where melodic layers drift and overlap.
Even when the cuts are fast, they sound soft-edged, not glitchy. Asobi ~V a
Japanese word meaning play ~V has a consistently dreamlike quality and is a
very pleasant listen. Even the darker textures have a kind of shimmery
gauze over them and there's nothing here that will frighten the horses.'
--Foxy Digitalis 'Asobi is a delicate, thoughtful record that places
emphasis on subtlety rather than bombast. Each track draws the listener
into its environment, building gradually from minute digital manipulations
into simple but elegant pulses of electronica. The tracks feel particularly
organic, a sensation punctuated by a lack of beats and abundance of warm,
natural tones. The sporadic (Before) plays companion to the stuttering
bursts of opener (After), while Be So and So Be also share a similar
relationship structurally. Closing track Noshi On Land is a beautiful
stretch of dark and industrious ambience, majestically droning synth
culminating in a calm, controlled descent. Asobi doesn't attempt
large-scale shifts in mood or style, but instead grows and changes
steadily.' Michael Pincott ~V RAVE magazine 'There are tracks that resemble
early, ethereal Silver Mt Zion and others that take in more deconstructed
Stars Of The Lid. But it's not so much the metamorphosis of sound here.
Asobi is the sound of metamorphosis, an aural painting of things that might
stand guard around your bed and keep you safe at night.' Evie Lawson - Time
Off magazine 'Object is about on and off, presence and absence. Listen
closely.' Ben Gook - Mess + Noise 'Asobi is an ambient album which suggests
a deep listening with the shimmering tones and drones like on 'Be So'.
'Having Been You' is a kind of relentless music of a loop of tiny synthetic
sounds that could be a possible soft beat as a backdrop. Grainy sounds
unfold on 'Tempered' that in the end are cut into little pieces. 'Did They
Speak' shows a gorgeous melody that meander the whole song. The clicks on
'(Before)' expand into the space like hesitating whispers. 'Noshi on Land'
close this album and feels like the soundtrack of sad end, sounds intrigue
and disquieting.' Guillermo Escudero ~V LOOP online.

Quantec - Unusual Signals CD (Echocord) [ECHO003CD] $14.75
RELEASE DATE: 06-10-2008
The Echocord label is proud to announce the debut full-length by
Germany's
Quantec aka Sven Schienhammer. When he was 15, he bought his first pair of
synthesizers (a Roland MC 505 and an MC 303) and some effects modules. At
first (1995-1998), he started off making ambient and pieces in the spirit
of early dub techno, in the footsteps of artists like Porter Ricks and
labels like Mille Plateaux, as well as more experimental realms. As his
knowledge expanded, so, too, did his collection of equipment, and he was
able to finally bring forth the music he always wanted to make. His
greatest love is ambient, dub techno, deep house and experimental, as well
as original dub and roots reggae. Music is all about emotion and it is from
these genres that, for him, emotion flows. This is a must-have album for
the fans of dub-techno and ambient.

Sarandon - Kill Twee Pop! CD (Slumberland) [SL77] $9.50
Since their formation by guitarist CRAYOLA in 2003, SARANDON has been
on a
mission to save indie from wetness, knee-jerk twee posturing, and careless
cardigan wearing. This potent group of post-punk tacticians takes its cues
from the rough angularity beloved by bands on labels like Ron Johnson and
Slampt, and Sarandon is the proud parent of a string of five 7-inch EPs
(and one compilation thereof) fairly bursting with short, sharp tunes, wiry
riff-mad guitars, spastic drumming, and terse-yet-clever lyrics. Trimming
all musical and lyrical fat, Sarandon cram more ideas and passion into 1:30
than many bands do across a whole record. Some points of comparison include
Big Flame, The Minutemen, Bogshed, Fire Engines, and The Fall, and though
Sarandon share musical DNA with those groups, they've forged their own path
and unique sound. Crayola marries naggingly catchy tunes to corruscating
blasts of guitar mayhem, combining the punchy, driving tunes with
surprisingly memorable melodies and smart lyrics. It's pop, but possibly
the angriest and most aggressive pop ever heard. "... an undeniable low-key
genius."-The Wire
Sawako - Bitter Sweet CD (12k) [12k1047] $12.25
RELEASE DATE: 05-05-2008
New York/Tokyo based Sawako is a musician, software designer, and
multimedia artist whose multi-disciplinary works intermix and pollenate her
music with inspiration ranging from nature, science, academia and poetic
motion. Following releases on Anticipate and And/Oar, Bitter Sweet is
Sawako's 2nd release on 12k after the critically acclaimed Hum (12k1035) in
2005. Her music is fragile and intimate, delicate, ephemeral and resonant.
Bitter Sweet is unmistakably Sawako but finds itself moving into much, much
deeper territory than her previous works. Building on her past forays into
experimental pop, she uses low and mid-frequency drones and soft, melodic
highlights to shape beds of stripped-down, shifting into hypnotic and very
linear tracks that fill the space they exist. Bitter Sweet is more drone
and tonal based than Sawako's previous works. However, these gentle
movements are punctuated by field recordings and acoustic instrumentation
with cello provided by Jacob Kirkegaard and guitar by Radiosonde and Ryan
Francesconi who also co-write two of the pieces on the album. In what has
become a bit of a signature, Sawako lends her own voice to the ending
lullaby "A Last Next." These combination produce rich results. Bitter
Sweet's diffuse and hazy soundscaping is Sawako's most mature work to date,
relying less on her previous child-like melodies while remaining feminine
and tender. She has come into her own after having established herself for
a number of years as a New Yorker where she has tirelessly performed,
studied and created as an important member of the city's electronic music
community. Bitter Sweet is packaged in a 6-panel digipack with photography
throughout by Brooklyn-based artist and photographer Maki Kaoru.
Scorch Trio - Brolt CD (Rune Grammofon) [RCD2074CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
This is the third full-length release from New York's free-spirited
power
trio, Scorch Trio: Raoul Björkenheim (electric guitar), Ingebrigt
Håker
Flaten (electric bass and electronics), Paal Nilssen-Love (drums and
percussion). As with their previous albums Scorch Trio and Luggumt, Brolt
is an old school analog recording - the band set up in one room,
instruments and amps miked with vintage microphones, playing live and
recording to analog multi-track tape with no overdubs and editing and then
mixing down to quarter-inch analog tape. There's a slightly different vibe
to Brolt than that of its predecessors, maybe caused by the change of
studio or the fact that they specifically set out to make it more of an
ensemble recording where all instruments are treated equally. They went
into the studio straight after a short, but very hectic tour of Europe and
Japan, which may explain the more loose, live feel of many of the tracks.
Björkenheim was raised on Hendrix, Zappa and rock music before he
discovered Miles, Coltrane, Mingus and Eric Dolphy. He has written film
scores and orchestral music and recorded with Bill Laswell, Henry Kaiser,
Jah Wobble, Peter Erskine, Paul Schütze, Mats Gustafsson and others.
Håker
Flaten is a member of The Thing, Atomic, School Days and Free Fall and has
his own quintet. He has played with Edvard Vesala, Krakatau and Tony Oxley
and many others. Nilssen-Love is the most profiled player on the Norwegian
jazz scene. A member of The Thing, School Days, Frode Gjerstad Trio, Atomic
and several others, the two most important things for him are energy and
creative freedom - both vital ingredients in the Scorch Trio musical
vocabulary.

Spectrum Meets Captain Memphis - Indian Giver CD (Birdman)
[BMR105] $13.25
A few years ago, SONIC BOOM (SPACEMAN 3, SPECTRUM, EAR) traveled to
Independence, Mississippi to work with legendary producer JIM DICKINSON
(aka CAPTAIN MEMPHIS). The result is Indian Giver, a true collaboration
where the two artists share both a stage and their musical visions. "The
Lonesome Death Of Johnny Ace," an epic, southern-fried biographical
groover, tells the tale of a famous singer's Christmas Day Russian Roulette
tragedy. The rest of the album finds Boom revisiting his past: a new,
fuzzier rendition of Mudhoney's "When Tomorrow Hits," a revamped version of
ultra-rare Spectrum popper "Take Your Time," and Spaceman 3 staple "Hey Man
(Amen)," where Dickinson throws down some back-ups. The Dickinson tunes are
brand new and eerie, with his recitations backed by ecstatic symphonies.
The record is book ended by new Spectrum number "Mary," which carries with
it a decidedly Neu! theme. Includes contributions from TATE COUNTY SINGERS
(OTHA TURNER's kin) and FUXA. No exports to the UK and Europe
Sun
Paulo - Electric Wisdom Sound System CD (Malicious Damage) [MD633]
$17.25
RELEASE DATE: 05-12-2008
Mating rock guitar with electronic dance dance rhythms, Japan's The Sun
Paulo can only be described as a musical roller-coaster, careering through
impossibly-convoluted twists, turns and dazzling displays of kinetic
virtuosity shot with rampant, crazed energy. Although musical reference
points aren't hard to spot, the freewheeling, quite natural way they're
gobbled up and spewed back out at often blinding speed makes for a
listening experience quite unlike anything else on the planet. Leading the
charge is guitarist and founder member Taiji Sato. He started the project
in 2000 with DJ Really? who left in 2002 to be replaced by renowned session
players Toshiyuki Mori on keyboards and drummer Takashi Numazawa. They've
since played a host of major festivals, released their debut album After
the Eclipse, soundtracked the movie Kalalu and started Tokyo's regular
Wisdom parties in 2004 collaborating with noted DJs including Ken Ishii,
Tsyoshi and Hiroshi Kawanabe. Electric Wisdom Sound System can switch gear
several times during the course of one track, like "But We Want More",
which eventually settles into a mighty slavering funk beast, or, even more
extreme, the three part "Electric Western", which manages to straddle jazz,
beatific piano-string ambience, belting techno and what sounds like the
Mahavishnu Orchestra dry-humping System 7 at the Paradise Garage. Shards of
70s groups like Focus, the Allman Brothers, Santana and the Mothers flash
past in what sometimes resembles an aural meteor storm, often colliding
with 21st century electronica, all climaxing with an outrageous version of
Burt Bacharach's "Close To You" which will carry you off to a higher plane
altogether. This album is launch-pad, take-off and best part of one of the
strangest trips anyone has had the skill or plain nerve to attempt in
recent years. Tracklist 1...i against a speeeeed! 2...~but we want more

Sutcliffe Jugend - Fall Of Nature CD (Ground Fault)
[CDSUTCLFall] $12.50
New material recorded in 2007. One track, nearly an hour in length,
depicting a nihilistic nightmare on personal and social levels. This epic
track evolves gradually, starting with the voice of creation, building to a
fury, and ending with man's desperate screams of realization and madness.
The relentless music in between is "nothing short of monumental."
Sutcliffe Jugend - This is the Truth CD (Hospital Productions)
[HOS166CD] $13.50
2007 release. "The first Sutcliffe Jugend studio album in eight years.
This is the Truth quite possibly stands as one of the most original and
perfectly-balanced noise compositions of the last 10 years. It references
and uses classic Sutcliffe Jugend of old while adding a brilliant blend of
foreboding tension and anxiety while using the most lively, disturbing and
textural elements of noise. All of which are brought together with the
phenomenal detail and balance of an accomplished electronic composer. Songs
that you think will explode leave you hanging with tension, while others
erupt with violence out of nowhere. It's an absolutely brilliant album that
was worth the wait."

Three Day Band (John Fahey/Ayal Senior) - Three Day Band CD
(Important) [IMPREC185] $12.25
RELEASE DATE: 04-21-2008
John Fahey and Ayal Senior layed down the tracks for Three Day Band in
a
Woodburn Hotel room at some point in 1999. These tracks show an
undocumented improvisational side of Fahey. It's certainly not early period
Fahey but not TOTE era either. At night after the recording sessions
commenced Ayal would record Fahey reading and discussing selected excerpts
from his writing. Fifteen tracks of spoken word Fahey are included. From
Ayal Senior's liner notes: I think I first met John Fahey at a Vince Martin
gig in Manhattan at some point in 1998. He was sitting in the back of
CBGB's 'other' space, listening to the gig and painting with fat bright
markers in a notebook he carried around with him. It was impossible not to
notice this guy. Big, bald, white beard, black sunglasses wearing shorts
and wool socks with black basketball shoes in a triple sized red t-shirt. I
didn't even know who John Fahey was, but John Allen, who brought Fahey out
to the east coast and, who I have always greatly admired, learned me to the
game. John Fahey and Vince Martin in the same room. Incredible. I wonder if
they spoke-- I asked John for one of the pieces he was working on and he
casually ripped a sheet out of his notebook and gave it to me. I spent a
few more days with Fahey at John Allen's place in Jersey. At the time I was
in university reading a lot of crap about European philosophy,
phenomenology and epistemology. Here I am, in my early twenties, schmoozing
with the uncontested literary and intellectual champion/prankster genius of
guitar music in the 20th century, not knowing anything, really, about his
life and music. It was weird, honest and unpretentious. We hit it off, and
I guess he found me interesting because we locked in on Kafka, Camus,
Spengler and Loren Connors like we were old war buddies. He called me a
Sephardic Troll and wanted to steal my red New Balance kicks. I ended up
tagging along with the No Neck Blues Band for a few shows to Philadelphia
and Boston where they played with Lee Ranaldo and Fahey. I think Sunburned
played as well. No one would remember I was even there, but I'll never
forget going to the record store in Philly with Fahey, Ranaldo and John
Allen looking for records before the show. It was during that trip that I
found sound@one #1.The entire Fahey/NNCK axis is so mysterious to me, the
recorded fruits of which are truly mind-bending. Back at the Hinthouse in
Harlem, I remember David Nuss telling me Fahey said the NNCK were a group
of warlocks, which they most certainly are and were. (Ken's Electric Lake)
I kept in touch with Fahey and he picked me up at the airport in Salem with
a blind friend whose name I think was Terry. We popped in a tape of my
latest jams from the psych shack into his deck and Terry was really digging
it. He definitely said it sounded like Hendrix. Fahey said he liked it too
and then I think we went to a Denny's for some french fries and shakes.
Readers of Vampire Vultures will no doubt recall my futile attempts to
describe or comprehend the state of Fahey's motel room during this period.
It was basically a crime scene. Empty fruitcups, wet paint on the carpet--
My journal from that week records that Fahey's motel room was not cleaner
than his car. We cruised the Value Village scene looking for records. It
was during a trip to one of these thrift stores one morning that we bumped
into a younger acquaintance of John's who said he'd want to jam with us
back at Fahey's motel room. I think his name was Barry. Nice guy. We went
to his place and grabbed some kazoos and other hobo instruments he had and
threw them in Fahey's car. Next thing you know, we've got some guitars and
amps and headed back to the Woodburn Inn with two pretty, young ladies. We
closed the curtains and I pressed record. I had brought a 4 track minidisk
recorder with me with the intention of hopefully doing some spoken word
recordings of John but had no idea that I would be laying down some molten
hot psych with thee Fahey. On tape, John's smoking away on electric guitar,
but this ain't Womblife. There's three other people in the room besides us
and I don't remember any of their names. I don't remember what they looked
like or what the hell they were playing but we were definitely channeling
some sort of highway poltergeists. I'm playing guitar as well, tweaking
about a bit. For some reason, I kept myself from listening to it or playing
it for anyone for a long time. Why? At night, Fahey would lie in bed and
I'd record him reading various excerpts from his writings. He reminded me a
lot of Kurt Vonnegut in his cynicism and gallows humor. I think they would
have gotten along great. I love the unfinished Fahey short story about Elie
Wiesel meeting Doc Boggs on a park bench. Boxes were strewn all over his
room filled with spiral notebooks. Fool's gold. His visual art was
incredible, I'm sure there are people out there who have the various pieces
of the puzzle to his sketches, drawings and paintings, that I hope, will be
compiled in a way that does them justice. --Ayal Senior, Toronto
Uton - Straight Edge XXS CD (Dekorder) [Dekorder025] $16.25
RELEASE DATE: 05-19-2008
Limited 500. "Straight Edge XXS" is the 2nd vinyl album by Finland's
Uton
released in a strictly limited edition of 500 copies on the Dekorder label.
It comes in a gorgeous full-colour collage sleeve assembled by Hirvonen
himself. While Uton's last Dekorder album "Alitaju Ylimina" (and most of
his other recorded works respectively) are hazy lo-fi drone masterpieces
for the most part, this is a completely different affair. Recorded straight
to tape within one month, right after returning from a 6-month trip to
India, these songs (if you could call them songs) are completely
out-of-this-world; very short and crazed sketch-like pieces sounding like a
Nonesuch Explorer LP of long lost field recordings from an as yet
unexplored continent. Or is it World Music from an unknown planet recorded
by those Sublime Frequencies guys from mysterious short wave transmissions?
Well, it is all that and more. It is pure ecstatic expression channelized
through Psychedelia, Free Jazz, Noise and rural ancient Folk Music from all
over the world in a completely naked, predominantly acoustic setting. One
of the purest forms of music you could imagine; while all the familiar Uton
elements remain evident in a hazy backcloth. Uton is the one-man project of
Jani Hirvonen originally hailing from Tampere. Hirvonen is one of the most
active musicians of the Finnish underground scene that has recently
presented us the likes of Kuupuu, Kemialliset Ystävät,
Islaja, Paavoharju
and Lau Nau and a seemingly never-ending stream of beautiful and highly
original record releases. Uton has previously released dozens of CD's,
CD-R's and Cassettes on a myriad of labels including Jewelled Antler,
Pseudo Arcana, Last Visible Dog, Digitalis, Ruralfauna and his own
Ikuisuus. He has collaborated with Amon Dude (Avarus), Anla Courtis
(Reynols), Antony Milton (Black Boned Angel), Ben Reynolds, Peter Wright,
Phil Todd (Ashtray Navigations) and Jan Anderzen (Tomutonttu, Kemialliset
Ystävät) among others. The latter collaboration (under the
Hevoset moniker)
is released on LP by Dekorder simultaneously.

unique
approach to songwriting fuses the quirky lyrical elements of DIY pioneer R.
Stevie Moore and Arab Strap's Aidan Moffat and musically treads the thin
line between the shoegazing electronica of Pygmalion-era Slowdive and the
utter pop of New Order's Power, Corruption, and Lies. His two first EPs on
Loaf are the work of a young songwriter with infinite pop potential. EP3
concludes Oliver's bedroom recording series with reinterpretations and

Wayne Horvitz - Joe Hill: 16 Actions for Orchestra, Voices, and

"Perhaps the best way to characterize Wayne Horvitz's (b. 1955) Joe
Hill:
16 Actions for Orchestra, Voices, and Soloist (2004) - based on the life
and times of the legendary labor activist and organizer - is as a radio

"Sailing ships, stars, angels and executioners - The Mark of Cain
chronicles the vanishing practice and language of Russian Criminal Tattoos.
Captured in some of Russia's most notorious prisons, including the fabled
White Swan, the film traces the animus of the flowers of this carnal art by
way of the brutality of it's origins: the penitentiary and the criminal
environment. Incisive interviews with prisoners, guards, and criminologists

critically-acclaimed Nightmania album. Taking it to the next level, Ortmann
continues to pioneer the avant garde genre with this surround sound album

Blues Addicts - Blues Addicts CD (Shadoks Music) [SHAD093CD]
$16.00
There were only four good and rare albums on the Danish Spectator
label:
Terje, Jesper & Joachim, Moses, Days and the rarest of them all, Danish
psych-rockers, Blues Addicts. Ivan Horn really kicks ass with his extra
heavy guitar. As good as the heavy Cream songs, in parts as creative as
Jimi Hendrix. Originally released in 1970, this record contains all
original compositions, long tracks, loaded guitars, English vocals and
heavy drum sounds. If Spectator would have kept rock music as their musical
genre instead of switching to jazz, Blues Addicts would have been
successful within the international rock circus. Ivan Horn (guitars, vocals
& kazzo), Mich Brink (bass), Gibber Thomsen (vocals & congas), Henning
Aasbjerg (drums).
Borbetomagus - Live In Allentown CD (Agaric) [AGARIC1996]
$13.75
Recorded live on Octobert 29, 1986. Reissue of the cassette-only
release
Live In Allentown (Lowlife). Jim Sauter (saxophones), Don Dietrich
(saxophones), Donald Miller (guitar), Adam Nodelman (bass), Scott Legath
(electronics). "Killer sound, includes the entire second set, never before
released. Byron reviewed the cassette in Spin years ago."
Bum
Kon - Drunken Sex Sucks CD (Smooch/MRR) [SMOOCH19] $13.25
BUM KON (named after Korean mass murderer Woo Bum Kon) was one of the
best
hardcore bands in the early '80s, even if few outside of Denver knew it.
Loud as hell and fast as f***, LARRY DENNING, MARK THORPE, ERIK OBERHAUSEN
and BOB MCDONALD thrashed on par with any other teenage punkers in the US.
In 1983, the band recorded their only single, Drunken Sex Sucks (released
by Local Anesthetic and recorded by BOB FERBRACHE), which sold through two
pressings at the time and now fetches up to $150 on eBay. Five songs appear
on the single but twenty more were recorded at the same session and have
been unavailable until now. Some of the tracks that did not make the single
are arguably better than the ones that did. At the time, the band focused
their energy into two albums and these recordings were forgotten over time.
The original tapes were found while mastering the Local Anesthetic
compilation and now the best hardcore record from '83 that was never
released can finally see the light of day. This album is co-released by
MAXIMUM ROCKNROLL RECORDS and is guaranteed to please punks both old and
new. Band members went on to play in SOAK, DUH, and HANK IV.

Dana Gillespie - Box of Surprises CD (Rev-ola) [CRREV245CD]
$15.25
" Following up our classic reissue of Dana's US-only album, Foolish
Seasons, here is the UK only counterpart, 1968's Box of Surprises! Again
featuring the same cast of 1960s britpop legends and morphing seamlessly
from her baroque pop and freakbeat styles to sophisticated blues. A LONG
overdue reissue! As a special bonus, all her insanely rare and crazily
collectable Pye Records single sides are included! What more can you
possibly want?"
Days - Days CD (Shadoks Music) [SHAD096CD] $16.00
The Danish group Days was formed in Copenhagen in the winter of
1967/1968
by Peter Lindhe (drums), John Kjaergaard (vocals/rhythm guitar), Ole Fester
(vocals/bass) and Lars Reinau (vocals/lead guitar). The band's repertoire
was mainly rock and blues-oriented with cover versions of songs from John
Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones. Lindhe
and Reinau started writing original material for the band and the
repertoire started changing from rock/blues cover versions to
self-composed, more lyrical songs with elements of The Beatles, Procol
Harum and (early) Deep Purple. In 1969, Jørn Anker (Hammond organ)
joined
the band and he, too, started contributing new original songs. The Days LP
was recorded in the early summer of 1970 and in 1971, the band split up.
Days came out on the Spectator label, and is one of the rarest albums from
Denmark. It is full of amazing prog tunes with great organ elements and
strong fuzz guitar. A killer album from beginning to end.

1995 CD release of these 1965 recordings. "Their seminal band together
for
only a year, Darby, Jerry and Grace Slick formed the core of this SF

Underground - seems larger today than ever. The garage origins of Darby's
classic, 'Someone To Love,' turned into hit by Jefferson Airplane, never
sounded better."

RELEASE DATE: 04-21-2008
Limited edition. Packaged in a deluxe 4 panel embossed heavy duty

jacket. Admira is sourced from original master recordings discovered by
Kluster member, and Tangerine Dream engineer, Klaus Freudigmann. Along with
Vulcano, also being released at the same time on Important, Admira is
presented here for the first time in this deluxe package. These intense
sessions were made with Schnitzler at the helm, as always, after the
departure of Mobius and Roedelius from the group. Conrad Schnitzler founded
Kluster in 1969 along with Roedelius, Mobius and often Klaus Freudigmann
who had multiple roles within the group as a player, engineer and
instrument inventor. Eventually Roedelius and Mobius left Kluster and
continued on as Cluster while Schnitzler and Freudigmann continued as
Kluster often exploring the communal aspects of music by bringing new
people into the group. Admira is limited to 1000 copies and is packaged in

packaging for Kluster's album Klopfzeichen. Very deluxe.

Rayne - Rayne CD (Shadoks Music) [SHAD089CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
Frank Saucier and his three brothers formed Rayne in 1977, located in a
New
Orleans suburb. They recorded the album with good home equipment with no
overdubs. The original album ("the black album," as they called it),
released in 1979, was only pressed 300 times and during a moment of
frustration, they took a box of the album and shot it with a shotgun,
making this a hard collector-find, in the truest sense. The music is first
class psych rock - strong compositions with great guitars and vocals -
everything just right and something you would expect from bayou tough-guys
- pure Southern spirit.
Ryoji Ikeda - 1000 Fragments CD (Raster Music) [RASTER089CD]
$16.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-13-2008
1000 Fragments is Ryoji Ikeda's first solo album, originally released
in
1995 on Ikeda's own CCI label. As early as 1995, leading Japanese
computer-manipulated sound composer Ikeda started his exploratory work with
digital sound design, having an inspirational impact on the founders of the
Raster-Noton label. 1000 Fragments encapsulates the early parts of Ikeda's
career, from the mid-'80s through the early/mid-'90s, in three different
subsections: Channel X (1985-95), 5 Zones (1994-95) and Luxus (1993). An
early review from www.full-albums.net characterizes 1000 Fragments as such:
"The first piece, consisting of several short parts (bursts?), snaps the
listener around a jumble of sound fragments from TV, NASA, radio, film, raw
electronics and computer-generated tones, and so on. It's rather
disorienting stuff... more like something you'd expect out of The Hafler
Trio, and actually sort of out of character with the rest of the disc. As
for the rest of the disc, it's taken up with two long works, which I assume
involve computer-generated sound but which have the lushness one more
associates with analog electronics. Both are longish ambient works, but
instead of featuring static repetitive structures, these unfold in an
intriguing manner, like a long, slow drive across a very sparse landscape.
As opposed to the initial work here, these are definitely the 'meat' of
this disc, and anyone looking for some fine ambient work with perhaps a bit
of an edge would do well to check this out."
Simply Saucer - Half Human, Half Live CD (Sonic Unyon)
[SUN118CD] $13.25
"Simply Saucer is not a band of our time. Matter of fact, it isn't a
band
of any time, as the Saucer travels by its own clock. The band's first album
Cyborgs Revisited was originally released on LP more than a decade after
the original Simply Saucer last took flight. Recorded in 1974 and 1975, the
album received an incredible amount of posthumous praise from both sides of
the Atlantic, including both Alternative Press and Forced Exposure naming
the album the Greatest Canadian Album ever released. Recently deciding to
start playing electric guitar for the first time since 1979, original
Saucer member Edgar Breau, along with longtime bassist Kevin Christoff,
decided to bring the band back. Debuting in late December 2006, Simply
Saucer wowed a hometown crowd with a sold out show that demonstrated this
was a band with a lot left to give - and then did the same in early 2007
for crowds in Montreal and Toronto too. Since the band had never recorded a
proper album during their original time together - the material on Cyborgs
Revisited comes from demo recordings and a live concert - the first thing
the band wanted to do was put out an album.

1967's Is Something Wonderful with Electric Prunes producer David Axelrod
and the great L.A. arranger H.B. Barnum (Lou Rawls/Supremes/Sinatra). The
result was a sumptuous blend of Bacharachian L.A. soft pop and Northern
soul/girl group attitude."

Various Artists - Living Is Hard: West African Music in
Britain, 1927-1929 CD (Honest Jon's Records) [HJR033CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
Honest Jon's has prepared a series drawing on some of the earliest
recordings in the EMI Hayes Archive - recovered from more than 150,000 78s
- staggering music from Iraq, Turkey, Caucasia, Lebanon, Iran (including
sides made in Old Street, London, in 1909), Egypt and the Belgian Congo.
This series opener presents the music of the West African underground of
1920s Britain, recorded at Hayes and released on the Zonophone label (which
exported nearly all the records to West Africa). You can hear Caribbean
influences here, the promise of highlife there, but Living Is Hard mostly
disavows fusion and assimilation. And by contrast with antecedents in the
history of black music in Britain - minstrelsy and spirituals, for example,
ragtime and jazz - these recordings are unhitched from the protocols of a
white listenership. These are startling, trenchant, elemental roots -
carrying troubled news home, along with signs of the new African
nationalism - and an enthralling glimpse of other lives, other times.
Artists include: Oni Johnson, Isaac Jackson, Ben Simmons, Harry E. Quashie,
Douglas Papafio, Prince Zulamkah, The West African Instrumental Quintet,
The Ga Quartet, Domingo Justus, James Tucker, John Mugat, Kumasi Trio,
James Thomas, Nicholas De Heer, George Williams Aingo and James Brown.

Rochdale CD (Ozit) [OZIT247CD] $17.75
"This CD explores the cultural diversity of the music and art scene of
Rochdale that started in the 1970s, based around Tractor Music, Cargo
Recording Studios, Deeply Vale Festivals and beyond. It covers '70s
Rochdale bands Tony Crabtree, Blinder (featuring Tom Szakaly and Tony
Hallsworth), Accident on the East Lancs, Local Heroes, Wilful Damage, and
Tractor as well as the next generation of bands such as the Pranksters,
Potential Victims (who toured with Discharge and GBH), Andy T and
Untermensch (who would go on to work with Crass). The album also contains a
previously unreleased version of Joy Division's 'Atmosphere' recorded in
Rochdale in the 1970s."

this Neverland twice before, and due to the great response, they're going

Various Artists - Love, Peace & Poetry - Chilean Psychedelic
Music CD (QDK Media) [QDK049CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
The Love, Peace & Poetry series from QDK continues in Chile, with 17
tracks
culled from some of the lost treasures of the psychedelic music scene of
the 7-year period between 1967-1973. In 1973, the Chilean dictatorship
banned most rock bands and most musicians had to stop or leave the country,
or take it underground. The ban extended to the retroactive destruction of
many master tapes for many of the albums included here, which only just
stopped as recently as the 1980s. Kissing Spell represents with "Yellow
Moon" taken from their 1970 album Los Pajaros, as well as Embrujo who
released their self-titled LP in 1971. Los Jaivas' debut LP was pressed
privately in 1971 in a small edition of 500 copies, making this track
extra-rare. Los Vidrios Quebrados were one of the real South American
psychedelic classics - their Byrds-like jangle-pop coming through clearly
on their track. Aguaturbia were pioneers of psychedelic rock in Latin
America, who also generated considerable controversy over their album
covers. Los Blops released three now very rare and very sought-after LPs
between 1970 and 1973, and their sound was focused on their guitarist's
electric 12-string guitar (an unusual instrument in Chile at the time).
Sacros were among the first electric folk-rock bands to perform during
Catholic mass - their recording was almost destroyed by the military and
only a handful of copies survived. Los Macs' 1967 masterwork, Kaleidoscope
Men, is rightfully considered by many collectors to be one of the finest
examples of '60s psychedelia from South America and original copies are
impossibly rare. Los Beat 4 was one of the most successful groups of the
national scene in the mid-'60s and both of their rare LPs are represented
here. Tumulto was respected for being non-commercial, and their track is
taken from their rare debut album. Escombros released their sole LP in
1970 and are a gem in the psychedelic progressive folk style.
Congregación
released their sole LP on the IRT label in 1972, and El Congresso's sound
is the result of a unique blend of contemporary elements and Andean roots.
Chilean psychedelic music was produced during a time of great cultural
change and social turmoil and is exceedingly rare and very special.
Yoshi Wada - The Appointed Cloud CD (Em Records) [EM1076CD]
$19.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
"This CD is the first-ever release of an extraordinary 1987 New York
City
performance. Recorded at the Great Hall of the New York Hall of Science,
this majestic recording captures the 60-minute opening performance of Yoshi
Wada's interactive sound installation The Appointed Cloud, which consisted
of a self-made 80-pipe organ, a pipe gong, sirens and a massive suspended
metal sheet, all triggered by a computer program designed by David Rayna.
The CD also features Wada, Bob Drombowski and Wayne Hankin on bagpipes,
plus Michael Pugliese (percussion). Dramatically structured, shifting and
intense, The Appointed Cloud features massive low frequencies and regal
percussion vying with the ululations of bagpipes, all resounding in the
huge reverberant space of the Great Hall with its 24-meter ceiling. This
CD, the second Yoshi Wada release as the joint production on EM Records and
Omega Point (the first being the 2007 reissue of the 1982 The Lament For
The Rise And Fall Of The Elephantine Crocodile), is sure to delight all who
enjoy drones, dynamics and drama."

Antonia Leukers - Hasenlove Picture Disc LP (Dekorder)
[Dekorder023] $20.75
RELEASE DATE: 05-19-2008
Picture-Disc LP (limited 300). "Hasenlove" is the debut musical release
of
Hamburg visual artist Antonia Leukers. She's a founding member of "Institut
Hasenbart", a 10-piece artist collective dedicated to a meta-scientific
research of hares and related social, zoological and aesthetical phenomena
in reference to the art world and pop culture. Leukers has previously
created stitched, sewed and animated sculptures while casually growing
cucumbers, working for a local in-vitro fertilization hospital and advising
young people on erotic issues as a German Dr. Ruth for a popular Online
magazine. Inspired by a journey to Island, hearing local travel guides
spontaneously interweaving their narrations with sudden outbursts of
folklore chanting and an encounter with Wolfgang Müller's (Die
Tödliche
Doris) strategy of transforming and combining his (pseudo-)scientific,
documentary and social research into a musical and artistic performance she
started to elaborate her fellow artist's lectures with musical renditions.
As a passionate DIY home-recording artist she has soldered her own
microphones, used cheap toy instruments, gameboys and minidisc recordings
of kitchen sounds to create her very own bricolage comic universe. By
recycling corny AOR mainstream Rock/Pop songs into some oddly disturbing
and wonderfully weird rabbit love songs with newly-made German lyrics and
combining these with some truly strange original compositions (ranging from
freeform collage to distorted techno to deranged singer/songwriter stuff),
she has created a musical love story in 7 parts. Spiritually influenced by
(though not really sounding alike) German "Neue Deutsche Welle" artists
such as Der Plan and theatrical and surreal performance bands like The
Residents her versions of popular love songs sound like a teenage/female
Andrew Lloyd Webber on bad acid. This 1-sided vinyl-only picture-disc LP is
a strictly limited edtion of 300 copies. Both the gorgeous design and
ornamental etching on the b-side have been done by fellow Hasenbart
founding member Renate Nikolaus.
Arcade Fire - No Cars Go 7 inch (Merge) [MRG316] $5.00
The latest 7-inch from ARCADE FIRE's smash Neon Bible album. "No Cars
Go"
is just starting to light up the airwaves across North America. Also
includes the non-album B-side "Surf City Eastern Bloc." Packaged in special
die-cut sleeves.
Arthur and Martha - Autovia 7 inch (Happy Robots) [BOT01-7]
$8.00
Featuring Adam of SALOON. "Gilbert & George, disguised as The
Carpenters,
steal the hits of Kraftwerk and bash them out on an old moog in the style
of Section 25" Zoot Magazine Arthur and Martha are stage names. Arthur and
Martha are Adam Cresswell and Alice Hubley. Adam was the founding member of
beard-stroking folkatronica indie-band, Saloon. They played lots of gigs,
made some records, shot to number 1 in John Peel's festive chart and then
fell off the side of the world. Alice was in party-girl band The Duloks
(she was the one who played the music) but wanting to wear something
onstage other than a PE kit or slutty nun's outfit, one night she jumped
ship and also fell off the side of the world. They met, picked themselves
up and on the side of a European autovia somewhere were born again as
Arthur and Martha. By bringing together their rag-tag collection of moogs,
melodicas and an antique drum-machine, they penned the songs on this disc
for you now. 'Autovia' is a foot to the floor 4/4 driving song; like
something Tom Petty would pen were he possessed by the brain of Kraftwerk
and the soul of a maladjusted robot. 'Japanese Kiss' is the soundtrack to a
messy break-up and inevitable argument over custody of the Pet Shop Boys
CD's. 'Squarewave to Heaven' is the song that Led Zep would have made had
Jimmy Page been influenced by Morton Subotnick rather than Muddy Waters.

Blank Dogs - On Two Sides LP (Troubleman Unlimited) [TMU196]
$11.00
"BLANK DOGS' proposition does also contain a great deal of the
otherworldly, I think you shall find the way in which they resonate
uncertain and hazy like transmissions coming from the other side most
appealing, like reliable messengers delivering a lost love letter across
impossible distances with a fierce passion which reminds me of that most
excellent Sir John Maus. Blank Dogs seem to have studied in the cadaverous
school of German minimalism where thaumaturgs such as Grauzone excelled,
but covered some of the piercing angles with the flesh and blood of the new
wave that these Islands did bear, particularly Joy Division and even Young
Marble Giants at certain moments of trembling melodic beauty. All laced
with that distorted barbed wire one finds in so many promising new acts
from the other side of the pond. Formidable material, I am sure you will
agree, do purchase their album On Two Sides when it is made available and
you shan't be disappointed."-20 Jazz Funk Greats

D.R. Hooker - The Truth LP (Subliminal Sounds) [SUBL014LP]
$23.75
One of the rarest U.S. psych albums, previously issued on CD by
Subliminal
Sounds, now in a beautiful and legit 180 gram vinyl LP reissue. The Truth,
recorded in Connecticut in 1972, might very well be the ultimate North
American acid rock album, ever. No hype here - just incredible music.
Tempting as it is to exaggerate the worth of such obscurities, The Truth
deserves every plaudit that comes its way, making it astonishing that there
was no real band to speak of. Instead, ten musicians are credited alongside
the mysterious Donald Hooker, who wrote, sang and played lead on the album.
Culled from the local music scene, they rehearsed only briefly before
entering the studio. Tom Kobela, who played dobro on this record, remembers
that Hooker "was a very likable, long-haired fellow" who "wore robes, which
was pushing the dress code conventions even then." Despite his wasted
appearance, though, he knew exactly what he wanted in the studio. Heralded
by an eerie hoosh, the first track exemplifies the album's sound: a strong
melody, funky drumming and percussion and piercing guitar, underpinning
oddly philosophical, quasi-Christian lyrics. Some songs are mellow, while
others rock hard. Other highlights include the irresistibly funky "A
Stranger's Smile" and the beautifully structured "This Thing." But the
album's masterpiece is the unforgettable "Forge Your Own Chains," whose
smoldering groove, enlivened by delicate synth and atmospheric brass,
provides the backing for Hooker's admonitory lyrics about the iniquities of
substance abuse. This is one of those albums that keeps revealing new
depths even when you've played it a hundred times. Connecticut
hippie-philosopher concocts homemade lounge-psych masterpiece. True
psychedelia! Includes a poster in a limited edition of 500 copies.

Falko Brocksieper - Heavy Day 2xLP (Sub Static) [SUS072LP]
$17.25

Hevoset - Hevoset LP (Dekorder) [Dekorder024] $16.25
RELEASE DATE: 05-19-2008
Hevoset is the duo of two of the most enigmatic individuals of the
Finnish
Underground, namely Jan Anderzen and Jani Hirvonen, both hailing from
Tampere. Anderzen is ringleader of a mysterious multitudinous beast known
as Kemialliset Ystävät (Fonal Records), a part-time member of
Avarus and
Islaja and records solo as Tomutonttu (Ultra Exzema, Beta-Lactam Ring
Records) with a new album coming out on Dekorder this year (hopefully).
Hirvonen is best-known under his Uton monicker with two LP's on Dekorder
and a stream of releases on Last Visible Dog, Digitalis, Ruralfauna,
Jewelled Antler, Pseudo Arcana and his own Ikuisuus label. While most
one-off meetings between so-called experimental and improvising musicians
often sound like bad excuses for a few beers and endless jams this is quite
the opposite - a heavy weight championship finale of two like-minded
whizkids cross-fertilizing each other with idea after idea, leading to some
of the weirdest and quixotic recordings you will have heard of the two.
Everything you loved about Kemialliset Ystävät, Uton and
Tomutonttu is
contained in Hevoset.....and more. Rural psychedelia, out-of-tune plucked
and strummed strings, overloaded organs and effect pedals, Jani Hirvonen's
sweet wordless vocals, ecstatic improvised drone collages, bells, backward
loops, jungle percussion and tons of unidentifiable sounds and noises
shaped into tight 4 - 6 minute tracks. Extracts from a Foxy Digitalis
review by Brad Rose: "This is the music of people removed from
civilization. It's like this is some kind of ancient artifact. It grinds on
your skull, but feels so right. (~J) There are moments when the things that
make Kemialliset Ystävät and Uton great on their own come
together in
forested harmony. In particular, on side A when Anderzen is droning away on
a keyboard and Uton is massaging your spinal cord with masochistic feedback
scrawl - it's hypnotic. These two artists are in a trance here, channeling
the sounds in their head. It's so f***ing good. (~J.)This is definitely a
case where the sum is greater than the parts. Anderzen and Uton are in top
form here and fans of either solo project will chew this up and consume it
for months."
Hot
Water Music - Till The Wheels Fall Off 2xLP (No Idea) [NIR237] $16.25
Fourteen years on, HOT WATER MUSIC is back with a series of shows and a
new
collection album! Raging and screaming or rocking and singing, beards or no
beards, the evolution of the band and their music is captured here in its
full vibrance and force. Till the Wheels Fall Off is a collection of rare
songs, B-sides, comp tracks, outtakes, covers, and split releases. Included
are songs from the out-of-print Moonpies for Misfits EP, their splits with
Alkaline Trio and Leatherface, and five songs recorded over the span of
their three albums on Epitaph. The selection of bands they cover is pretty
insane too: Springsteen, Leatherface, Alkaline Trio, Government Issue,
Midnight Oil, Circle Jerks, The Clash, and Turbonegro. Includes new art and
photos, plus a few pieces from out of-print records. The cover art is once
again rendered by SCOTT SINCLAIR, who painted their previous record covers.
Invisible Conga People - Weird Pains/Cable Dazed 12 inch
(Italians Do It Better) [IDIB008] $8.75
Psychedelic slow pulse boogie from JUSTIN SIMON (guitar, other) and
ERIC
TSAI (synths, other). Eric makes some of the band's equipment himself.
Justin runs Mesh-Key Records (Yura Yura Teikoku). They sound like a Kraut
disco band. Think E2-E4 meets early house. "A dance-music duo whose live
shows are, believe it or not, computer-free: Instruments' sounds are
twisted beyond recognition by vintage analog gadgetry, to sublime
effect."-Nylon Magazine
Jack Rose - Kensington Blues LP (VHF) [VHF92] $13.25
NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL FOR THE FIRST TIME!!! Kensington Blues is the
fourth
full-length release from JACK ROSE, and his most diverse outing by far. The
album is an inspired mix of styles and sounds, with straight ragtime, heavy
12-string, and that sweet, sweet Weissenborn lap guitar all checking in.
Honed during endless touring in 2004, the repertoire here is delivered with
maximum authority in a series of first-take performances recorded in early
2005. "While the new century's novel folk has already seen significant
definition, Rose is largely alone in talking new century ideas with the old
language.... Kensington Blues is derivative and at the same time nearly
brilliant. 8.0."-Pitchfork

M's, The - Real Close Ones LP (Polyvinyl) [PRC153-1] $13.00

"Markus Fix, already known from his release on Cecile Recordings, is
back
with his second strike and we are proud to present this release on Below.
This young, talented artist for sure knows how to combine the deepness of
house with today's minimal techno styles. Two tracks, two different
journeys for the late night madness in your favorite club. But as always:
listen by yourself."

Maxime Dangles - Speicher 59 12 inch (Kompakt) [KOMEX059EP]
$9.75
Maxime Dangles handles Speicher 59 with aplomb. "Tulipa" is nothing
short
of an anthem. Slightly reminiscent of Joey Beltram's golden times, this is
simply one of the best techno tracks you've heard in years. The same counts
for "Firewire," a dead-serious, darkish beast of a track that takes things
down to a more mental atmosphere. Maxime Dangles single-handedly restores
your faith in proper TECHNO.
Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster - 2 LP (Suburban Home) [SH63]
$13.25
NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! "On the sophomore outing by MAYLENE AND THE
SONS
OF DISASTER, frontman DALLAS TAYLOR (formerly of UNDEROATH) leads his band
on a scathing set of Southern metal. Although the Birmingham, Alabama-based
group still displays some Christian hardcore leanings, it proves to be much
more adventurous than many acts in the sub-genre, as evinced by the bluesy
'Memories of the Grove' and the raucous 'Dry the River.'"
Minilogue - Animals 2xLP (Cocoon) [COR016LP] $17.25
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
Malmö, Sweden's Minilogue (Sebastian Mullaert and Marcus
Henriksson)
present Animals, their debut full-length release for Sven Väth's
Cocoon.
Nowadays, electronic producers tend to retreat into their special stylistic
niche - Minilogue dare to draw the bigger picture. After releasing
outstanding productions on such renowned labels as Traum, Crosstown Rebels
and Wagon Repair, this opus magnum covers a wide spectrum of music,
reaching from peak-time techno to beatless deep ambient.

Perc/Tom Pooks & St. Thomas - Speicher 57 12 inch (Kompakt)
[KOMEX057EP] $9.75
After Perc & Fractal's "Up," that crazy tune with the endlessly rising
peep
tone, their new track "Headphone Heart" is another monster. It's not as
hysterical as "Up," but features an incredible flute section, instead. Pure
hobbit techno! The other track belongs to Tom Pooks & St. Thomas, and
"Remember" is Pooks' most subtle and sexy work to date.
Peter Grummich - Garden 12 inch (Karloff) [KARLOFF026EP]
$11.50

Poison The Well - Versions 2xLP (Suburban Home) [SH52]
$16.25
NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! "POISON THE WELL take a giant leap forward
for
metalcore-kind with their Versions album. The Floridian trio sequestered
themselves in a barn in Sweden (of all places), coming out of the process
with a set that is equal parts fiercely intense and melodic/artsy. On this
ambitious record, fans of PTW may be surprised to find mandolin, banjo, and
horns alongside the requisite guitar/bass/drums assault."
Popshop - Plaisir Noir 12 inch (Stattmusik) [STATT021EP]
$9.75
Martin Akeret is Popshop. The diversified soundworld of Popshop
consists
of a build-up of tension in an elaborate composition while juggling breaks
and straightness. The melodies on Plaisir Noir are abysmal, emotional and
dark, never shattering nor gloomy, but mysterious and propellant. Some of
them even have a touch of timeless romance and unpredictability - you never
know what will happen in the next four beats.
Quantec - Unusual Signals 2xLP (Echocord) [ECHO030LP]
$17.25

Reinhard Voigt - All In 12 inch (Kompakt) [KOM168EP] $9.75
With his new 12" All In, Reinhard Voigt audibly glances back to his
early
musical influences. There's a good measure of old school Chicago house
thump combined with the smart weirdness of Warp's bleep techno age.
"Missing Billie" insistently pushes the low range frequencies and gently
keeps the crowd going without any razzle-dazzle, sirens or horns. The
splendid cover artwork was provided by Dennis Busch, who runs the
incredible Esel imprint.

Russell Haswell - Second Live Salvage 2xLP (Editions Mego)
[EMEGO013LP] $27.00
RELEASE DATE: 07-08-2008
This is the long-awaited follow-up to the award-winning Live Salvage
1997-2000 CD (MEGO 012CD, 2000). Hot on the heels of recent collaborative
releases with Florian Hecker (as Haswell & Hecker) on Warner Classics, Warp
Records and Editions Mego, Coventry, UK's Russell Haswell presents the
second volume of his Live Salvage archive series. This series documents
improvised real-time, computer-generated audio presentations given over the
past 10 years in different types of venues, all with contrasting acoustics
and audiences. Editions Mego is proud to announce this double vinyl LP set.
As NME asserted of this series, "now you can experience the terror in your
own home."
Scorch Trio - Brolt 2xLP (Rune Grammofon) [RLP3074LP]
$24.50
Nilssen-Love is the most profiled player on the Norwegian
jazz scene. A member of The Thing, School Days, Frode Gjerstad Trio, Atomic
and several others, the two most important things for him are energy and
creative freedom - both vital ingredients in the Scorch Trio musical
vocabulary.
Sissy Spacek - Gore Jet 7 inch (Troubleman Unlimited) [TMU163]
$5.50
SISSY SPACEK's "Gore Jet" was recorded in Los Angeles in the summer of
1999
by JOHN WIESE (bass, drum machine) and CORYDON RONNAU (vocals). A limited
edition, one-sided 7-inch packaged in white "dj style" sleeves.
Sonic Youth - J'accuse Ted Hughes LP (Sonic Youth Records)
[SYR7] $9.50
The seventh installment in SONIC YOUTH's series of experimental and
sometimes instrumental releases on the band's own SYR label features on the
A-side a previously unreleased 22-minute drone piece recorded at the All
Tomorrows Parties festival in the UK in April of 2001. At ATP, the band
previewed instrumental and early versions of songs from the then soon-to-be
recorded NYC Ghosts & Flowers album, and this exclusive performance was the
premiere of "J'Accuse Ted Hughes." The B-side is a soundtrack-style piece
recorded at the band's Murray Street Studio in 2003 for a never-realized
collaboration with French clothing designer AGNES B. The 18-minute-long
song was recorded by a five-piece version of the band-the four members of
Sonic Youth plus JIM O'ROURKE, who also mixed "Agnes B Musique." This LP
will be soon followed by a CD-only release of the band's Another Side of
Sonic Youth Roskilde Festival performance, where the five-piece Sonic Youth
line-up was joined by saxophonist/reed player Mats Gustaffson and
electronic noise legend Merzbow for an hour of improvised music.
