Black Dog - Temple of Transparent Balls CD (Soma) [1254763]
$21.75
Temple Of Transparent Balls was the first album released by The Black
Dog
on the avant-garde, forward-thinking GPR label in 1993, two years before
their signing with Warp Records. At this time the album was a blueprint
for
the emerging UK techno scene and even to this day sounds as futuristic as
ever. Lost in time, the album has now been refreshed and given a new lease
of life in the digital age, completely remastered, playing to new ears,
finding new fans, and at the same time carrying nostalgia for those
already
familiar with the Black Dog sound. Tracks like ?4,7,8? display the side of
Black Dog that loves to experiment and play with the listener?s
expectations. With the track in a 7/8 time signature, an alien concept to
much of dance music, you find yourself drawn in by the complexity of the
rhythms and mesmerised by the haunting melody. Meanwhile, tracks like the
breakbeat madness that is ?Mango? and ?The Actor And Audience? exhibit a
playfulness to The Black Dog?s work suggesting the group took a great deal
of enjoyment from their inventiveness. In stark contrast to these, ?Kings
Of Sparta ? and album-finisher ?The Crete That Crete Made? are darkly
ambient, peacefully insane. As Ken Downie of the group states, ''20 years
or 200 years, it makes no difference how old a tune is, a good tune is a
good tune''. His words certainly ring true for this timeless classic.

Harold Budd/Clive Wright - A Song For Lost Blossoms CD (Darla)
[DRL198-2] $12.25
RELEASE DATE: 10-07-2008
Darla is pleased to offer a A Song For Lost Blossoms, a new record of
ambient melody and transcendental mood portals from minimalist/modernist
master Harold Budd and friend guitarist/composer/producer Clive Wright. A
Song For Lost Blossoms nicely builds on both artist's previous ambient
work. A Song For Lost Blossoms was recorded live and in studio at
different
locations including the artist's homes, at The Red Cat (Disney Concert
Hall), Los Angeles, and Clive Wright's Desert Sky Studio, Joshua Tree, CA.
These recordings represent the very best of Harold and Clive's work
together over the period 2004 to 2006. Harold Budd is recognized as "The
Godfather of Ambient Music". His works are the cornerstones of the modern
minimal and ambient cannon. Clive Wright is a founding member of the
platinum selling pop/rock band Cock Robin and has worked as writer,
producer and guitarist with Kim Carnes, Human Drama, Tears for Fears
members, Montell Jordan, The Black Eyed Peas and Peter Gabriel. Budd and
Wright met as residents of the beautiful and remote Southern California
desert community of Joshua Tree. With only just a little imagination one
can easily hear the influence of the Southern California desert
environment
-- the sounds of its stark beauty, serene quiet and otherworldly presence.
No doubt an inspirational environment for Budd and Wright to create music
of such ambiance and beauty.

2562 - Aerial CD (Tectonic) [TEC004CD] $14.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-10-2008
This is the debut full-length release by Dave Huismans aka 2562. After
releasing two of the fastest-selling 12"s on Tectonic in 2007, it was a
natural step to drop something truly stunning. If you can imagine a
perfect
marriage between Benga or Skream-style rhythm and bass with Basic Channel
soundscapes - you will realize why everyone is getting so excited about
this album. If 2007 was a year for Burial and Pinch, then summer 2008
surely has 2562 written all over it.
Action Biker - Hesperian Puisto CD (Friendly Noise) [fyn69]
$13.50
RELEASE DATE: 06-23-2008
It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album! It has now been
six
years since she emerged as an artist doing fun and popular live shows and
releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene of Gothenburg, Sweden, which
included people like Jens Lekman and The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah
Nyberg Pergament has been involved in other projects, such as Flow Flux
Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has
received great acclaim from different places around the world. Over the
years, Sarah has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an
opening act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with
Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this time,
new
recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations and singles.
In
brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is released, it means the debut of
someone with a lot of experience~J The record is named after the Hesperian
park in Helsinki, Finland, where Sarah lived for a while. She describes
her
music as baroque on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety
- altogether very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy,
sweet, analogue sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the
CD. References and Influences: Young Marble Giants, Broadcast, Dislocation
Dance, Moondog, Virna Lindt, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Antena, Francoise
Hardy, Saint Etienne, Brian Eno, Ghost Box, Stereolab, Fred Astaire,
Maurice Ravel, ESG, Komeda, Cluster, Flying Lizards, Syd Barrett, The
Passions, St Christopher, John Barry, Can, Human League, Colleen, Marine
Girls, Eric Dolphy, Telex, George Delerue, The Wake, Kraftwerk, Lori & The
Chameleons, Differnet.
Anthony Rother - My Name Is Beuys Von Telekraft 2CD
(Telekraft) [TELEKRAFT001CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-24-2008
This is Germany-based electro artist/producer Anthony Rother's first
release for the Telekraft label. Even in the fifth year after founding the
Datapunk label, Rother still always surprises; he is a scientist whose
name
permits strange associations between mechatronics and the art world. After
his acclaimed releases Popkiller (2004) and Super Space Model (2006),
Anthony Rother concentrates fully upon the digital nature of the sounds,
not just in the programmatic statement of My Name Is Beuys Von Telekraft.
Architecture In Helsinki - Like it or Not CDEP (Polyvinyl)
[PRC157] $7.50
RELEASE DATE: 07-07-2008
The Australian sextet is back with their 3rd single from their
critically
lauded new album Places Like This. The band has been on a tear since the
album's release in fall of 2007, selling over 25,000 copies in the US in
under a year. On top of that, they made their debut on the Billboard
charts
in the first week of release, peaked at #3 on the CMJ Top 200, and sold
out
several clubs nationwide on their fall 2007 tour. With the Like It or Not
EP, the band finally records "One Heavy February" and "Beef in Box," which
are two long-time crowd favorites from their live shows, to accompany the
single version of "Like It or Not". To top it off there is a "Like It or
Not" remix by one of 2008 biggest buzz bands, El Guincho.
Arms - Kids Aflame CD (Melodic) [MELO054CD] $14.75
RELEASE DATE: 07-22-2008
Kids Aflame is the debut full-length by Arms, aka Brooklynite Todd
Goldstein. Inspired by a love of "sad/weird/insular genius types" like
Neil
Young, Stephin Merritt, and David Byrne, Arms' music cloaks catchy tunes
in
fuzzy, echo-laden production and Goldstein's melodramatic, crooned vocals.
Bananas - New Animals CD (Recess) [RECESS113.5] $11.00
"My band was on tour with The Bananas once and at one show they were
pushed
to do a sound check. I was eating in another room downstairs when i heard
them start. All of the sudden i caught myself wolfing down my food very
fast like i was in a hot dog eating contest. The reason was cos it sounded
like i was missing a huge fun party. When i finished i ran into the room
they were playing and it was empty, like most sound checks are. Even from a
faint thump street blocks away they have a spirit and energy that many
other bands will never come close to even pretending to have. Their first
3
albums are mainstays in my stereo and never seem to lose charm or fail the
test of time. Their 4th album, New Animals, promises even more longevity!
Some of their best songs like 'Gentrification for Dummies,' 'Radioaction,'
'National Anthem,' and 'Roly Poly' call this record home. Damn I'm glad
they exist!"--Todd, Recess
Benga & Coki - Night CD (Tempa) [TEMPA030CD] $6.50
Released in late 2007 as an extremely limited uncredited promo 12" and
now
finally due for official release, Tempa presents one of the most
infectious
dance tracks to come in years - Benga & Coki's "Night," a massive hit
across all dance genres from nu-rave to bass line house. Currently
enjoying
heavy rotation by DJs including Annie Mac, Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob Da Bank,
Pete Tong, Scratch Perverts, Gilles Peterson, Hot Chip and Ricardo
Villalobos. Remixes by Geeneus, Digital Soundboy and Zinc.
Black Taj - Beyonder CD (Amish) [AMI029] $13.50
This second long-player from BLACK TAJ continues to explore the
psychedelic
and classic rock templates with which they worked on their self-titled
debut, an incendiary mix of self-aware stoner jams ("Spacewash") and
progressive rock time shifting ("Cold Comfort") that recall some of the
musicians' previous projects. For most of the 1990s, DAVE BRYLAWSKI and
STEVE POPSON played in (the recently-reunited) POLVO and in the late
1990s,
GRANT TENILLE rejoined Brylawski in the primarily folk-inflected IDYLL
SWORDS. Rounding out the Taj quartet, TOM ATHERTON proves himself a
formidable drummer. While many bands in the current hard rock revival
mindlessly ape their idols, Black Taj deliver an intelligent updating of
these conventions, and proving again that the twin guitar attack of Thin
Lizzy and the muscular riffing of early ZZ Top still has legs. If you've
been wondering what one-half of Polvo has been up to over the last decade,
look no further. Like many of us, Black Taj expands upon the sonic
experiments of the 1990s by returning to the records at the center of so
many record collections.
Christ On Parade - Loud And Live CD (Prank) [PRANK098]
$11.00
Thirteen tracks recorded live on CHRIST ON PARADE' 2007 West Coast
tour on
KFJC radio, this represents the set the "all original members" band played
on both their West coast and European tours featuring classic tracks from
all eras of the band, with original vocalist BARRIE picking up some of
the
second vocal duties of the later material. It was remixed from it's
original broadcast, mastered by George Horn Mastering and comes complete
with an "Evil Live" styled record jacket and insert. The band's reunions,
including a recent successful one of Japan, have been marked by
dedication
to presenting the band as they are and were--the equipment and the sound,
attack and intent are not falsely "updated" or "modernized," and while
this
record does peek through a lighter side of the band in between tracks,
it's
very true to their original records and will stoke out both old and new
fans.
Clientele, The - That Night, A Forest Grew CDEP (Acuarela)
[nois067] $8.50
RELEASE DATE: 05-28-2008
This is the third, and last, of a trilogy of E.P.s the Clientele have
recorded for Acuarela. They have always used the Acuarela E.P.s as a way
to
stretch out between albums, to create a through-the-looking-glass version
of the band that shadows the better-known history of their albums.
'Ariadne' experimented with drones and minimalism, 'The Lost Weekend'
stretched the foggy sound of their debut to epic proportions. In contrast
"That Night, a Forest Grew' is the most commercial and -shockingly-
danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach, part Television,
part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity, light and shade
of
'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element of summer pop perfection.
This is The Clientele as a hazily remembered 1970s cartoon series, all
distanced off-key colours; imaginary summer hits, radio waves beamed in
from a dream-discotheque.
Crystal Image - Crystal Image II: Rock And Roll CD (Red
Lounge) [RLR001CD] $16.50
2001 release. "They supported such bands as Quicksilver, The Grateful
Dead,
Jefferson Airplane and many other, now legendary former local acts. Their
music was in the vein of Jefferson Airplane, just sometimes even heavier
with fantastic fuzz wah-wah guitars."
Dave Mason & Cass Elliot - Dave Mason & Cass Elliot CD
(Rev-ola) [CRREV255CD] $15.00
No description available at this time.
Daysleepers - Drowned in A Sea of Sound CD (Clairecords)
[FERN073c] $12.25
A year in the making, The Daysleepers return with their full length
Clairecords Debut! "Drowned in a Sea of Sound" takes nothing but the best
elements of the band's highly acclaimed EP's and blends them with some
entirely new experimental soundscapes. The Daysleepers trademark sound of
mixing Dreampop, Post-Punk and New Wave styles is still very much present,
and at times pushes even beyond those boundaries. Imagine the sounds of
the
Cure, Cocteau Twins, The Chameleons and Slowdive rolled into one. These 10
tracks touch on a wide variety of sounds and emotions ranging from spacey
ethereal drones to blissful up-tempo dreampop beauty. For fans of the
early
out-of-print EP's, "Hide Your Eyes" and "The Soft Attack", "Drowned in a
Sea of Sound" is a must have. It is proof that The Daysleepers have fully
matured and discovered their true sound.
Department of Eagles - Johnny Glaze Christmas: Classical
Snatches 2003-2005 CD (Isota) [SODY24] $9.50
No description available at this time.
Dubfire - I Feel Speed 2x12 inch (Sci + Tec Digital Audio)
[SCITEC003EP] $22.25

Durutti Column, The - Sunlight to Blue... Blue to Blackness CD
(Kooky) [KOOKYDISC027] $17.25
RELEASE DATE: 06-23-2008
"Sunlight to blue -- Blue to blackness" - This was one of the more
upbeat
title suggestions for the very bare, back to basics, reflective new album
from The Durutti Column. Vini Reilly has recorded under the name The
Durutti Column since 1978 and has a rich portfolio of work, releasing over
15 albums in this time, but Reilly has been through some dark times the
past year. In a conscious response to his last two polished and
studio-based releases he has created some sparse, simply beautiful
'sketches' as he once called them, more reminiscent of his work from the
early eighties. Many of the pieces are simply instrumentals played on his
Juan Montero flamenco guitar, and he returns to 'Without Mercy' for the
last track 'Grief' and reinvents 'Never Known' from LC. This release also
sees the debut of a talented young pianist and singer, Poppy Morgan, who
co-wrote the melancholy Ananda as a duet with what Reilly dryly calls
'intrusive guitar'. For the uninitiated, Vini was the first artist signed
to Manchester's influential Factory Records, co-wrote and played on
Morrissey's first solo album 'Viva Hate', and was heavily featured in the
film about Manchester music culture, '24 Hour Party People'. Ever critical
of Vini's voice, but ever a fierce champion of his talent, the late Tony
Wilson would surely appreciate this return of The Durutti Column. Track
listing: 1. Glimpse 2. Contact 3. Messages 4. So Many Crumbs And Monkeys!
5. Ged 6. Never Known Version 7. Anada 8. Head Glue 9. Demo For Gathering
Dust 10. Wordless 11. Grief.
Elephant9 - DodoVoodoo CD (Rune Grammofon) [RCD2075CD]
$16.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-24-2008
Already a firm live favorite on the Norwegian scene for a couple of
years
due to a handful of highly energetic and very enthusiastically received
concerts, the trio of Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent,
Humcrush), Nikolai
Eilertsen (The National Bank) and Torstein Lofthus (Shining) on drums
finally deliver their debut album.
Endless Blockade - Primitive CD (20 Buck Spin) [SPIN019]
$9.50
THE ENDLESS BLOCKADE is a band from Toronto that plays Power-Violence.
Taking the foundations of the genre's forebears (Crossed Out, No Comment,
MITB, etc) and streamlining it for today's harsh realities, The Endless
Blockade is furious hardcore meets crawling sludge. Primitive is the
Blockade's second LP, following the debut LP Turn Illness Into A Weapon,
several EPs and split LPs (with Iron Lung, Warzone Womyn and Hatred
Surge).
Primitive is the band's most fully realized work thus far, with great care
taken in tying the album together musically, visually and lyrically. SCOTT
HULL's mix is both clear and raw while GLYN SMYTH's artwork visually
represents the doomsday cults, fanatics and radicals that provide the
backdrop for the LP's deranged pace and surgically precise twists and
turns. The Blockade's affinity for the diseased power-electronics and
noise
genres (think Slogun, Whitehouse) also plays a more significant role on
Primitive.
Extra Life - Secular Works CD (Planaria) [PR030] $9.75
EXTRA LIFE is the new band led by New York-based guitarist/vocalist
CHARLIE
LOOKER (member of ZS and OCRILIM, ex-DIRTY PROJECTORS). While the music
retains some of the heady instrumental abstraction of his work in Zs,
Extra
Life moves into a far more melodic song-based realm. The compositions are
still epic, complex and aggressive, yet with a lush, personal, dramatic
spirit; dark, heavy avant chamber pop with a cold Gothic beauty echoing
that of Medieval chant. In addition to Looker's voice and guitar, the ban
includes TONY GEDRICH (bass, member ARCHAEOPTERYX), IAN ANTONIO (drums,
Zs), TRAVIS LAPLANTE (keyboard, tenor saxophone, member LITTLE WOMEN) and
CALEY MONAHON-WARD (violin, member NAT BALDWIN BAND).
Fantasy Bar - Friday Afternoon Car CD (Acuarela) [nois1085]
$13.50
RELEASE DATE: 05-28-2008
Kieran, Diego, Jordi and Ruben used to be part of Migala, probably one
of
the best Spanish bands ever. It's something they won't try to hide. Now
they are Fantasy Bar, whose debut album, Friday Afternoon Car, takes their
music ~Vand influences ranging from American Music Club to Nick Drake,
Arab
Strap to Neil Young--- into enchanting new territories. Friday Afternoon
Car is an album of nostalgia and yearning for a brighter dawn; of
harshness
and tender feeling; of hopes and of fears. Its 14 stately, slow-paced rock
songs are suffused with the beauty that lies just beneath the surface of
existence. The careworn yet compassionate vocals of Scottish songwriter
Kieran Stephen (ex-bassist with Los Planetas and Migala, bass guitar on El
Hijo's album "Las otras vidas", live musician with QZIOS) speak of the
emotions these four friends know so well: the persistence of memories;
friendship and wasted love; the knowledge, throughout it all, that the
good
times can prevail. It's there from the first moments of "Spiders", which
opens Friday Afternoon Car: the story of a bad dream called solitude,
wrapped in gentle guitars and upbeat but delicate drums. The album was
recorded at Rock Soul Studios in Madrid with the assistance of Carlos
Torero, and features keyboards and guitar by Abel Hernández (El
Hijo,
former singer and guitarist of Migala) and electric guitar by Chris
Bathgate (Sans Trauma, ex-Ganger, who also used to play bass with Arab
Strap). It takes its name from an old British phrase that alludes to the
belief that car-factory workers lose interest toward the end of the week:
as the brief liberation of the weekend looms, everyday cares cease to
matter. Friday Afternoon Car invites the listener to enter the universe of
these songs: to discover a place to reflect and, above all, to feel.
Fantasy Bar are: Kieran Stephen (vocals, guitars, bass), Diego Yturriga
(keyboards, accordion and melodica), Jordi Sancho (bass, fender rhodes)
and
Ruben Moreno (drums).
Gary Panter - Gary Panter Book (Picture Box Inc.) [PBGP]
$63.00
"PictureBox has assembled the definitive volume on Panter's work from
the
early 1970s to the present. This monumental, slipcased set is split into
two 350-page volumes. The first is a comprehensive monograph featuring
over
700 images of paintings, drawings, sculptures, posters and comics,
alongside essays by Robert Storr, Mike Kelley, Richard Klein, Richard
Gehr,
Karrie Jacobs and Byron Coley, as well a substantial commentary by the
artist himself. The second volume features a selection from Panter's
sketchbooks - the site of some of his most audacious work - most of which
has never been published in any form. "
Goldmund - The Malady of Elegance CD (Type) [TYPE039CD]
$14.00
RELEASE DATE: 07-08-2008
The Malady of Elegance is the second poetic full-length from
Boston-based
composer Keith Kenniff, better known to some as Helios. Taking cues from
Corduroy Road, Keith again restricts himself to the piano in conjuring up
his humble soundscapes and again the listener is pulled into a deep,
meditative and filmic world as the notes glide to a slow, pensive meter.
Keith's Two Point Discrimination EP was a collection of haunting
experiments in form and sound, but The Malady of Elegance sees him back
into the warming, homespun territory of Corduroy Road.
Hatewave - Free Ringtones CD (Apop) [AP040] $13.00
The mercenary group of assassins known as HATEWAVE hailed from
Chicago,
where they quickly became known for their chaotic, aggressive live shows.
Mixing many different metal styles from death to grind, black metal to
thrash, all with a dissonant, experimental edge--the group was difficult
to
pigeon hole. The murderous trio played shows with Napalm Death, Boredoms,
6
Feet Under, Anal Cunt, Drop Dead, Charles Bronson, Cavity, Bongzilla,
Fleshgrind, Ezurate, Melt-Banana, Incantation, 7000 Dying Rats, Cock ESP,
and at the first Expo of the Extreme with Nile, Dark Funeral, and others.
"Disgusting 4-track no-grind from poor white guys on meth and hoarse (no
hippie shit."
Horsepower Productions - In Fine Style CD (Tempa) [TEMPA001CD]
$16.00
Originally released in 2002 on the Tempa label. The incarnation of
Horsepower Productions on this release includes original members Benny
Ill,
Nasis and Lev JNR and In Fine Style has been hailed as one of the first
true dubstep records. Nasis has collaborated with Rhyme Time and Benny Ill
has been an active producer under various guises for over a decade,
including the dub-laced sounds of Bill & Ben. Horsepower Productions'
sound is impeccably produced, and draws influences from UK garage, Detroit
techno, dub, broken-beats, reggae, D&B, funk, soul, kung-fu films and much
more. A hidden classic from some original dubstep mavericks.
Horsepower Productions - To The Rescue CD (Tempa) [TEMPA003CD]
$16.00
Horsepower Productions' second full-length album, originally released
in
2004 on the Tempa label. To The Rescue sees the crew expand their grime/UK
garage/dubstep palate for an eclectic, insouciant, dub/two-step glitch
journey. These tracks defy generic dance stereotypes, with plenty of
random
samples, shadowy vocal snippets, horns, crickets, looped guitar, and of
course, deep, menacing sub-bass to act as mortar to the diverse elements.
This record, in addition to their debut was and continues to be a huge
influence on dubstep producers such as Skream, Benga, Digital Mystikz,
Kode
9 and others.
Hub, The - Boundary Layer 3CD (Tzadik) [TZ8050] $28.75
No description available at this time.
Ilyas Ahmed - Vertigo Of Dawn CD (Time-Lag) [TLR042]
$13.50
"Much anticipated first proper release after a string of ear tugging
and
increasingly impressive private press CDRs. A real shinning spirit in
these
somewhat goofy times of "folkpsych" abuse, this guy nails it like its in
his DNA. Way beyond a simple formula, this is a complete tonal voyage.
Opening the album with a dark ritual of dueling reeds and buzzing drones,
things then erupt into some seriously burning psych raga excursion built
from totally heavy, jamming, acoustic guitar licks, Eastern grooving hand
percussion, stoned backwards or fuzzed-out electric guitar splatters, and
subtle creaky drones. The vocals are nearly unintelligible but swirl
beautifully through most songs like floating smoky ripples. Woozy,
head-bobbing, and completely THERE." CD version packaged in a matching
fabric textured, golden hued, mini LP-style gatefold cover with black &
blood red printing, plus insert & woven Japanese inner sleeve.

(Destijl) [DESTIJL063CD] $12.25

Pink
from somewhere on Jersey Avenue, or maybe a one-manned Meat Puppets. This
kid has really cobbled something together in his kitchen sink! The Sun
Splits For...The Blind Swimmer will shock and please when the prettiest
sound of his deep, rich voice comes out of the headphones, and it'll make
you tap yr toes and nod yr head like a little goil."

$25.75

Leighton Craig - 11 Easy Pieces CD (Room40) [RM424] $14.75
RELEASE DATE: 05-28-2008
Since 1995, Brisbane resident Leighton Craig has etched out a varied
musical existence, from solo keyboard studies to an extensive body of
collaborative work. His solo works, which span delicate ambient keyboard
excursions through to site specific live documents and most recently song
based explorations, have mapped out a focus of tone, duration and
'situations' for sound. On 11 Easy Pieces, his first widely available solo
LP, Craig offers an intimate yet robust collection of works recorded on an
array of cheap analogue keyboards, including his instrument of choice the
Casio MT40. Recorded to cassette at the kitchen table between 2003-04,
these recordings have been lovingly toasted by valve tubes during
mastering
to reveal not only a true sense of analog adventurousness inherent to
Craig's mode of operation, but also his ability to unveil a rare tonal
richness from his instruments. Leighton Craig casts out an audio net and
collects together an essential haul of tonal gradients, phased rhythm and
collapsed chordal interplays. 11 Easy Pieces (and two somewhat less 'easy'
works), is a warm collection of distorted hymnals and blurred geometry -
all of them visionary in their purity and timbral sensibilities. "This is
more than Australian Music ~V this is Australia the musician." Sean Rabin,
The Australian "an organic exorcism of the trees--the music of the
earth...." Brad Rose, Foxy Digitalis. On Organ Notes "hazy minimal organ
tones -- feelgood mind-body static. Turn up loud and let it float." Eddie
Flowers, Slippytown.

equivalent of the Oscars for films in Spanish language. "Bajo las
estrellas" starts, and we hear an ukelele, a xylophone; suddenly it bursts
a fun rogue melody, with an ubiquitous banjo and a persistent rhythm, as
if
we were travelling in a ramshackle bus. We are entering the impossible
city
of Estella (in Navarra, Spain), more imaginary than real, a world fraught
with losers who cling to any chance of leading a more 'normal' life. Mikel
Salas' music is that of iron, scrap metal and abandoned caravans, rusting,
with twilight western instrumentation and lo-fi sound, a succession of
instrumental landscapes, almost borderline abstractions that travel along
with Benito Lacunza (actor Alberto San Juan) in his journey towards
happiness, to the possibility of a remote happiness. In previous
conversations between the director and the musician, it was much discussed
Daniel Lanois, and, above all, his album "Shine". Felix Viscarret says
that
Mikel Salas likes to get into a project before even shooting. But the
proper 'revelation' came when "Mikel faced the first editing of the film.
That's when we started talking about road music for our peculiar road
movie
à la navarra, an industrial western, the redemption story of an
embarrassment guy, Benito Lacunza, who's going to show us that behind his
dirty appearance lies someone with a huge heart." This is Acuarela's first
published soundtrack. But it's also almost like any other release this
label has got us used to. Almost folk, dark but flooded by rare cracks of
light, intimate, warm, sometimes funny and sometimes bleak. Mikel Salas
has
written and recorded (by himself) the sound of how is traveling on roads
filled with dust, deep into the mists of the north, or bordering small
towns. And to conclude the record, a surprise: the voice of Enrique
Morente
and his amazing, magical version of Victor Young's standard "Stella by
Starlight, filling the sky with stars.
Nadadora - La Química Que Nos Une CDEP (Jabalina)
[JAB-031] $11.00
A mini CD featuring a new song ("Septiembre no está tan lejos")
the video
of their song "El bosque" (by 77Pandas), and four extraordinary remixes of
songs from their second album, "Hablaremos del Miedo, made by some of the
most relevant artists of the Spanish indie scene. These very personal
reworkings of their songs include remixes by Jaime Cristóbal
(Souvenir),
who has remixed "Despues de todo", Dorian ("El bosque"), Javier Standard
("A=B=C") and Homeboy dj ("La Forma"). But it's not just a remixes CD ~V
"Septiembre no está tan lejos" is a new song which shows the way of
things
to come, as the new songs that Gonzalo Abalo is writing for the band will
probably feature more electronic arrangements in the future, which will
enrich the sound of the band both on record and live. Connoisseurs of the
band won't be surprised to find echoes of The Field Mice, New Order,
Trembling Blue Stars or The Radio Dept. in these new songs. "Evelyn
Ashford", featured on the compilation "Juegos Olímpicos" already
showed
this new sound, and "Septiembre no está tan lejos", featured on
this
mini-CD goes a bit further on, while retaining the main features of the
Nadadora sound at the same time, especially the double vocals by Sara and
Gonzalo, their brilliant choruses and melancholic moods. All in all,
here's
a record with a renewed point of view of Nadadora's songs, and aimed at
the
dancefloor, topped by an amazing video for the song "El Bosque" directed
by
Spanish ace company 77Pandas. Luis Escalante, again, is responsible for
the
"La química que nos une" artwork, and Arturo Vaquero, another usual
suspect
of Nadadora's career, has been in charge of the mastering in his
Abrigueiro
Studios in Friol, Lugo (Spain).
Nadja Black Boned Angel - Christ Send Light CD (Battlecruiser)
[CDNADJAChri] $12.75
As Satan was chucked outta heaven his horn scraped a gash in the
clouds and
the resulting torrent of divine cloud/satanic blood is exactly the kinda
goo that NADJA and BLACK BONED ANGEL wash themselves in on a regular
basis.
The first bites of a particularly bloody collaboration of soul-befuddling
heaviness and sickening vistas viewed through rose tinted gas-mask lenses.
Nadja's inherent sense of melodic-crushpop pushed right to the front and
smothered in Black Boned Angel's hideous, sugar-free toffee. Pure and
unsoiled by the tiniest shred of hope, this is the sound of total defeat.
Nordvargr - Helvete CD (20 Buck Spin) [NORD01] $18.50
The newest creation from Villa Bohult, the NORDVARGR family burial
vault.
This time the "cursed poet" WREST from the USBM LEVIATHAN CULT and DRAKHON
(BEYOND SENSORY EXPERIENCE, MZ. 412) have joined the night sessions of the
never sleeping Swedish zombie. It would be totally insane to be waiting
for
something life-asserting, light and positive for the three of them.
Helvete
is just the overwhelming Darkness and the ice-cold all-filling Terror.
Meditative and sinister Dark Ambient rhythms are filled with the ominous
whisper of Wrest and Drakh. Deep and lengthy drones as well as the
charming
atmosphere of the Swedish industrial decadence. Super limited edition
pressing.
Okay - Huggable Dust CD (Absolutely Kosher) [AK064] $12.75
RELEASE DATE: 05-20-2008
***At first, Huggable Dust seems to be a break up record, but it is
much
much more. It grows and blossoms and touches on so many aspects of the
heart; longing, loss, obsession, disagreement, and resilience. Just as on
his debut albums Low Road and High Road (both released in 2005 on
Absolutely Kosher), OKAY's MARTY ANDERSON writes and performs his songs
with a uniquely kaleidoscopic approach of mixing repetition and variation.
This is the language of pop music, of course, but Marty's songs fold in on
each other acrobatically in ways that aren't always apparent on a single
listen. Multilayered and baroque, dense layers of technological and
organic
sounds fizzle under gentle pop melodies. Even in the simplest songs, where
Marty is playing acoustic guitar, it comes back to a boil.

Pattern Is Movement - All Together CD (Hometapes) [HT022]
$12.75
RELEASE DATE: 05-20-2008
***Following their first three records, endless shows and tours
(among
them dates with friends St. Vincent, David Bazan, and The Forms), and the
transition from five-to-four-to-three-to-two members, PATTERN IS MOVEMENT
turned themselves inside out and made the record we've all been waiting
for: All Together. ANDREW THIBOIDEAUX and CHRIS WARD embody the two-man
wall of sound; it's music that's been a long time building, rising out of
the ether of left-behind evangelical childhoods (see Jesus Camp), best
friendship (kindled as kids listening to The Chronic), and life in
Philadelphia. All Together continues the mysterious narrative of the band,
both documenting and foretelling the pounding energy of their
near-legendary live show: Chris and Andrew side-by-side, hammering drums
and keys (among other things), sweat flying, voices hollering. This is
what
resides in the ten exquisitely constructed tracks of All Together, the
kind
of stuff that compelled Stereogum to recently declare that "Pattern is
Movement deserve your worship." The album, released by Hometapes, is
packaged in a deluxe wood-grained wallet and includes a reproduced set of
the antique photos that, found on the street in Philly, inspired each
song.
Raven - Back to Ohio Blues CD (Owl) [OWL001CD] $8.75
Official master tapes self-released reissue of this unknown
hardrock/pre-punk Ohio LP from 1975 (previously reissued and long gone on
the Rockadelic label).
Robert Ashley - Concrete 2CD (Lovely Music) [LCD1010]
$24.00
This 2CD set comes packaged with a 96-page booklet. "Premiered in
January
2007 at the legendary La Mama Theater, Concrete is Robert Ashley's newest
masterpiece. Though it is not made explicit in any way, the libretto
concerns itself with the `musings' of an old man alone. He thinks about
strange questions and even as the questions are asked, they are answered
in
various forms of sarcasm, indifference, questions about the questions and
explanations. In other words, he is talking to himself. The opera takes
the
form of five `discussions' about matters he wonders about: why do people
keep secrets about themselves? Why do the buildings in the city all line
up
perfectly (vertically) when the surface of the planet is round? Why is it
that so many things that people do as recreation are played
counter-clockwise? What has happened to the many women friends (`lovers')
he has had and `left behind' and why were they left behind? And, finally,
he ponders the incident in which he recently saw a `flying carpet' in his
bedroom." Music & libretto, orchestra samples, design and live mixing by
Robert Ashley. Voices: Joan La Barbara, Sam Ashley, Thomas Buckner,
Jacqueline Humbert. Voices and orchestra live mixing and processing: Tom
Hamilton.

Skydog - Just Want To Make You Happy CD (Red Lounge)
[RLR002CD] $22.25
2001 release. "First re-release ever taken from the master tapes of
this
insanely rare LP from Georgia made in 1974 in an edition of 100. Wild &
psychotic hippie progressive rock mixed with incredible heavy fuzz
psychedelic jammers. Monstrous orgies between the guitar and Hammond organ
and you can also find heavy eastern tunes woven in the long guitars jams."
Sleeping Years, The - We're Becoming Islands One by One CD
(Rocket Girl) [RGIRL51CD] $15.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-09-2008
The Sleeping Years is the new project from Dale Grundle, formerly of
the
Catchers. Now signed to innovative indie-label Rocket Girl, the debut
album
"We're becoming Islands One by One", is a gorgeous exploration of melody
and melancholy. A gifted lyricist, Dale's exquisitely crafted songs tell
of
people trying to stay connected in a world seemingly designed to keep them
apart. He is heavily influenced by the language and culture of his home in
Ireland, providing a distinct character to this highly personal collection
of songs. Born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland to an Irish father and a
Scottish mother, Dale started his first band Catchers while at school.
Their first single 'Cotton Dress' came out on Setanta Records and became
single of the week in Melody Maker. Their debut album 'Mute' was recorded
with Mike Hedges in France. Catchers went on to tour with Pulp, Edwyn
Collins, The Divine Comedy, Dr. John and Oasis. Their second album
'Stooping to Fit' was recorded by Nick Drake's arranger Robert Kirby. Dale
started his solo project The Sleeping Years with a trilogy of EPs in 2007,
'You and Me Against The World', 'Setting Fire to Sleepy Towns' and 'Clocks
and Clones'. These were very well received and are very much living proof
that independent singles do sell-out. They also garnered critical acclaim,
featuring on BBC Radio 1's Introducing, the Guardian's writer's play list
and on the cover mount of Rolling Stone Magazine. Songs have been heavily
played on Gideon Coe's 6music show and on French radio, having been
championed by France's answer to John Peel, Bernard Lenoir. 'We're
becoming
Islands One By One" is poised to become an instant, yet timeless classic
with a refreshingly dynamic twist on acoustic song writing. Dale performs
all vocals and guitars, not to mention bass, Hammond organ, Rhodes piano
and e-bow parts and was joined by cellist Michelle So and Tom Page from
Rothko on drums. The Guardian: 'his voice breaks exquisitely between hope
and despair in songs that the acoustic guitar was invented for' Dazed and
Confused: 'a one-man show that owes his lilting metaphysical lyricism to
the likes of Nick Drake, Elliot Smith and John Martyn. It's good to know
that there are people like him out there.

Sybris - Into The Trees CD (Absolutely Kosher) [AK082]
$12.75
RELEASE DATE: 05-20-2008
***Chicago's SYBRIS is a quartet of powerful grace, the sound of a
battalion of Valkyries astride winged horses bound for Valhalla. The sweep
of giant white wings in the wind, the creak of the saddle beneath the
weight of warrior goddesses in full regalia, the dreamy, gauzy, glittery
haze of the ghosts of the warrior dead behind them floating towards
eternal
glory. However, this is not metal--rock has got to reclaim all the cool
Viking shit from metal. But Chicago winters can be as extreme as those in
Nordic lands and Sybris carries all of that on their latest album, Into
the
Trees. Propelled forward by singer ANGELA MULLENHOUR's sugar coated
knife-edge voice, a unique entity in itself, brimming with shattering
potential and weighted with its own world-weariness, elegant, bruised but
never defeated. In fact, the whole outfit is tough as shit, Chicago in a
way nobody's seen for awhile.
Tabaco - Desintegracion 2CD (Red Lounge) [RLR003CD] $22.25
2002 release. "2CD set from mastertapes, 16 bonus tracks. The complete
recording session to this album. This legendary, almost impossible to get
album was recorded in Barcelona in 1971 in the same studios (GEMA) as the
rare and great counterpart Pan Y Regaliz. The album was released as a
local
pressing with a few hundred copy's only. The music is stunning heavy
psychedelic rock with a monstrous wah wah fuzz guitar and mixed with some
of the most psychotic spaced-out sound effects ever."

Trout Hayman, Watkins& Lee - Hayman, Watkins, Trout & Lee CD
(Fortuna Pop) [FPOP79CD] $16.75
For Fans Of: Hefner, The Wave Pictures, Alan Lomax, Leadbelly, Townes
Van
Zandt. 14 dynamite tracks of East London bluegrass featuring Darren Hayman
of Hefner and Dave Tattersall of The Wave Pictures, including covers of
songs by Townes Van Zandt and The Mountain Goats along with seven band
originals. Hayman, Watkins, Trout and Lee are a country, bluegrass band
from East London. They don't sing in American accents and their songs
feature tube trains, Bethnal Green, sick days, flat lemonade and unmade
beds. HWT&L perform weary singalongs; fragile and flawed ballads that wipe
a tear and force you to smile. Darren Hayman (ex-Hefner) formed the band
with Dave Watkins, in 2005, as an antidote to their 'career' bands. The
idea was that this would be a band with as little ego as possible, with
everybody taking vocals, submitting material, leaving and arriving as they
wished. The group is as much about playing around Darren's kitchen table
as
it is playing on any stage. In fact the original idea was even to avoid
the
notion of doing records. However when Dave Tattersall (The Wave Pictures)
joined in 2007 with a whole repertoire of blues and country songs, as well
as his own fantastic ballads, it became obvious that they had something
worth preserving. In the spirit of Big Pink, the Basement Tapes and the
first McCartney album, it was decided to record the album in two days at
Darren's house, with a bunch of battered microphones, a fresh pot of tea,
and some fruitcake. The resultant record features seven band originals
(four written by Darren and two by Dave Tattersall) alongside covers of
songs by Townes Van Zandt and The Mountain Goats and smattering of
traditional numbers. Hayman, Watkins, Trout and Lee let you peer though
the
cracks of their kitchen, and hit nearly all the right notes in the
process.
Let them give you a warm handshake. Press : reviews in Q, Mojo, Plan b,

Tu
Fawning - Secession CDEP (Polyvinyl) [PRC156] $8.50
RELEASE DATE: 07-07-2008
Tu Fawning is the new project of Joe Haege and Corrina Repp. The
collaboration stemmed from a mutual desire to achieve something outside
the
bounds of their other projects, 31Knots (Haege) and Corrina Repp. One look
at the liner notes finds Haege all over Corrina Repp's The Absent and The
Distant, which was released on Mark Kozelekís (Red House Painters,
Sun Kil
Moon) label Caldo Verde. Then the roles were reversed as Repp appeared on
31Knots' EP:Polemics and The Days and Nights Of Everything Anywhere, both
released on Polyvinyl. Haege has also served as Repp's backing "band" for
tours they have done with Mark Kozelek and Norfolk and Western, playing
drums, piano, samples and singing. This is truly when the ideas for what
would become Tu Fawning began to take shape. Both Haege and Repp have been
touring internationally for many years now. They have individually shared
the stage with the likes of Cat Power, The Decemberists, Modest Mouse and
Menomena to name a few. Together under the Tu Fawning moniker they already
have a European tour under their belt as well as quickly becoming one of
the most recognizable bands in the local music scene in Portland.
Ueno - Sui-Gin CD (Room40) [RM428] $14.75
RELEASE DATE: 05-28-2008
Ueno, along with his partner Saya, is one of the core members of
Tenniscoats, who've released a number of fantastic discs of straight-up
melodic to the core sing-songing joy. 2007 saw the release of Tenniscoat's
'Totemo Aimasho' for ROOM40 and 'Tan Tan Therapy' for Häpna/Headz.
In
addition to his contributions to the Tenniscoats mothership, Ueno has
released a string of solo releases, most of which explore his engaging
approach to the guitar. 'Two Things Always Happen Simultaneously' released
in 2003 on Majikick as a cdr and then re-issued two years later as a
'proper' cd on Commune-Disc lays the foundations. Whilst it is more
explicitly a guitar record than whats goes down on Sui-Gin, the
Fahey-esque
finger-picking that would otherwise plant him firmly within the Takoma
school (Ueno's cat is not called 'Fahey' without reason) is wilfully
offset
by Ueno's technique of recording multiple overdubs without recourse to the
original. There might be a little of that on 'Sui-Gin' (Japanese for
mercury), too. Either way, there is an ongoing slippage between intention
and accident in the complex mesh of notes, and Ueno sends himself further
away from any superficial 12-string takoma purism by plugging his guitar
into a moog ring-mod and completing erasing its original sound. What you
hear on 'sui-gin' is 9 tracks of alien beauty that sit somewhere between
Derek Bailey and Mouse on Mars' 'Instrumentals' lp. Takashi Ueno plays 12
string acoustic guitar & Moog ring modulator. "For an instrument that when
presented solo often brings to mind a clutter of reference points, Ueno
Takashi's playing is stubbornly his own and (((hasunosu))) suggests we are
hearing but the first offerings of an increasingly vital proponent of
contemporary Japanese guitar composition." Signal To Noise.
Various Artists - Splendid Isolation CD (Friendly Noise)
[fyn68] $13.50
RELEASE DATE: 06-16-2008
A collection of exclusive tracks from the Radio Dept., Testbild!, Most
Valuable Players, Differnet, Action Biker, Viktor Sjöberg, VED,
Peter
Jackson, Peter Nilsson, Redmalm, Enheten för musik och melodi,
Malkovic,
Erik de Vahl, Band in a Box, Flow Flux Clan, Robotboy, and Jian. Between
January and December 2007 Friendly Noise released 18 mp3 singles offered
as
free downloads from www.friendlynoise.se. From the start it was intended
to
be a one-year-long project. The idea was simple: contributions chosen by
us
from our extended family of old friends and new discoveries, usually two
songs, together with an introduction by the artists themselves and a
picture to illustrate and enhance, once or twice a month. This was meant
as
a complement to our CD releases, and a chance to easily distribute great
songs, in cases where the album context isn't necessary. These two ways of
distribution aren't contradictory, they're related, as we stated on our
website. Soon we realized the series had become a success, both when it
came to the quality of the output and the amount of interest generated. So
"Splendid Isolation" - our third compilation after "Friendly People Making
Noise" (2003) and "Are You Scared To Get Happy?" (2006) - is our way of
documenting the series through a selection of the songs and thus giving
them a more official kind of release. The record is also a celebration of
five years of Friendly Noise as a label. The order of the songs on the
record isn't chronological, it's instead our attempt to make the record
sound as good as possible as a whole. TRACKLIST: 1. Bognor Regis (Peter
Jackson) 2. (Jack) Lullaby (Viktor Sjöberg) 3. Rondo (Most Valuable
Players) 4. Stratoscope (VED) 5. Get Nowhere (Peter Nilsson) 6.

Winning - Could We Believe In Magic? CD (Ache) [ACHE037]
$13.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-26-2008
Vancouver trio, Winnings sophomore full length is as dour and
uncomfortable
as it is playful. Its a paradigm sprouted from the seed of improvisation,
but nurtured from a dark and claustrophobic sentiment. Structurally, Could
We Believe In Magic? has it's hands in a variety of extremes. It runs the
gamut, from an apparent abandonment of traditional tempo and structure,
to,
at least comparatively, more conventional composition. Last year's, This
Is
An For Cigarettes, Winning's debut album, was a tangled and puzzling foray
into rocks most experimental corners, abandoning rhythm, and structure
almost completely; Only Magazine called it ...a clumsy acrobatic act
beneath the Big Top of punk rock. And Magic is, no doubt, a logical
continuation of such acrobatics; the most notable difference being much
larger occurrences of coherency. Melody and structure are gestured at;
sometimes completed, and sometimes spun quickly out of control. One may
assume that these moments of melody (are we bold enough to call them
'choruses?'), would smooth out Winning's cumbersome disposition. But it is
arguable that the exact opposite is true. Much like how one warm day will
make the cold ones feel colder; these moments create a reference point for
normalcy. The pop insinuations on Magic are equally as baffling as the
free
structured ones.
Woods Family Creeps - Woods Family Creeps CD (Time-Lag)
[TLRRR002] $12.00
A CD version Red Records #2. Newest incarnation of NYC's wondrous
WOODS, as
the trio of JEREMY EARL, JARVIS TAVENIERE and G LUCAS. For sure the finest
yet from these folks. Lysergic & infectiously bent acid folk mashed into
Faust IV-style electronically dosed pop grooving, all awash in odd studio
effects, motorik percussion, cracked fuzz, unique vocal gush, twisted
lyrics, and burning psych jams--plus enough sweet hooks to get yr next
freakout party moving right. Hell yes, its a wicked one. Packaged in sweet
glossy mini LP style gatefold covers with full color art and woven
Japanese
inner sleeves. Edition of 1,000.

Harrisons - No Fighting In The War Room DVD+CD (Melodic)
[MELO052CD] $14.75
RELEASE DATE: 06-10-2008
No Fighting In The War Room is the debut album from hotly-tipped
Sheffield
four-piece Harrisons. Fans of earthy lyrics, northern accents, hard
guitars
and good old fashioned rock `n' roll read on, but don't be too quick to
pigeonhole - Harrisons may hail from the same fertile scene that spawned
the ubiquitous Arctic Monkeys, but this debut album is in a class of its
own.

$14.75
"The late `60s were an explosive time in America. Flower power was
blooming, civil rights were in full swing, and while American soldiers
were
fighting in Vietnam, American musicians were creating several brands of
rebellious music back home. One such musician, a trombonist/conga player
from Pontiac, Michigan, had grown weary of his nation's volatile political
climate. In the wake of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, Melvyn
Price set sail for Sweden where he immediately began gigging with
Scandinavia's jet-set jazz musicians. In 1974, after a pair of primarily
percussive albums intended to aid dance instruction, Price composed and
recorded his masterpiece, Rhythm and Blues, released on his own Mel-Dor
label. The music was simple, yet inspiring, pairing Sweden's disciplined
session players with imported Latin American percussionists. Rhythm and
Blues was never widely distributed abroad, and has, in recent years,
fetched top dollar at auction."
Mort Garson - The Wozard of Iz CD (El Records) [ACMEM145CD]
$16.50
"An extraordinary, acid, counterculture take on The Wizard of Oz
created
under the auspices of electronic producer, Bernard Krause and combining
Jacques Wilson's inventive lyrics with the moog synthesisers of the
legendary Mort Garson."

Scott Walker - 'til the Band Comes In CD (Water) [WATER226CD]
$14.00
"In discussions of Scott Walker's body of work 1970's `Til The Band
Comes
In is unfairly left out or, even worse, derided as excruciatingly
saccharine. However, the first ten songs on this album, all Walker
originals, are on par with his finest work on classic albums Scott 3 and
Scott 4. Scott Walker's fifth solo album is a fine example of the early
work from one of pop music's most idiosyncratic geniuses, reissued on CD
for the first time domestically."
Silver Apples - Silver Apples CD (Phoenix Records) [ASH3303CD]
$16.00
New, more deluxe version, with special metallic silver foil sleeve (in

this replaces the previous Phoenix CD edition (ASH 3003CD).
Sir Victor Uwaifo - Guitar Boy Superstar 1970-76 CD (Soundway)
[SNDW012CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 07-08-2008
Guitar-Boy Superstar is the first survey of the long career of the
legendary Nigerian musician, artist and poet Victor Uwaifo, one of
Nigeria's greatest stars - a long-overdue release that puts Victor Uwaifo
next to other Nigerian greats better known in the West. Victor Uwaifo's
mission to spread and preserve the cultural heritage of ancient Benin
(Modern day Edo State, Nigeria) has seen him work as a commissioner for
cultural affairs in his native Edo State, a University lecturer, acclaimed
bronze sculptor and poet as well as a highly successful musician. He has
been awarded Nigeria's highest cultural tribute - the order of the Niger,
and continues to teach and work today with an energy that has not abated
for nearly fifty years. Cutting his musical teeth with Victor Olaiya ("the
evil genius of highlife") in the early `60s, he went on to form his own
band The Melody Maestros, producing Nigeria's biggest-ever selling record
with Joromi in 1965, for which he was awarded Africa's first gold disc. He
has continued to produce some of the most popular and engaging music in
Nigeria ever since. This album focuses on his early 1970s musical output.
Uwaifo invented a unique style of highlife music that he called ekassa -
based on ancient rhythms and fused with modern highlife instrumentation
and
just a dash of rock and soul.
Sun Ra - Universe Sent Me (lost Reel 5) CD (Transparency)
[TRANS305] $13.25
Volume 5 of The Lost Reel Collection features music from two separate
SUN
RA tapes. The first tape is from a 1972 short recording at the Seaport
Museum in New York City. The acoustics sound like an outdoor concert. The
featured track is "Discipline 27-ll," which is purely instrumental and may
be the earliest recording of this particular version. In 1973, Ra
declamations like "Life is Splendid" and "What Planet Is This?" were added
on top of the music theme. The second tape is from a 1973 recording in
Paris, France. Although the acoustics are quite different, it's a natural
segue from the Seaport Museum tape. Opening with the "Discipline 27-ll"
theme and the by-now more familiar declamation there which we title as
"The
Universe Sent Me" with this release. The beauty of the "reed" section is
clearly heard during this track due to the apparent close proximity of the
tape machine and the microphone setup. Once again, as with the first four
volumes of The Lost Reel Collection, the listener is in for a real treat.
Various Artists - The Complete Havoc Singles 1971-1973 2CD
(Aztec Music) [AVS035CD] $24.50
"Melbourne's short-lived Havoc Records label ran from 1971 to 1973
and
released landmark releases from some of Australia's greatest ever bands.
The monster selling Aztecs Live! At Sunbury (AVSCD001), and the all-time
Aztecs' classic Most People I Know Think That I'm Crazy were the biggest
sellers, but the label also released notable platters from Lobby Loyde
(with the Coloured Balls and The Wild Cherries), Carson, Thump'n Pig &
Puff'n Billy, Michael Turner In Session, Ash, Chook (best Aussie band name
ever?) and Star Spangled Banger."

The 2nd CD release on (1.8)sec.records is a live to hard disk
collaboration
between 3 artists very comfortable with improvisation and live recordings.
8 trax that present a variety of textures and subtleties always keeping a
continues momentum and sense of style. This recording will appeal to those
who are interested in improvised music as well as digital minimalism.
REVIEW: Ultra-high pitches warble and fluctuate in this progressively
experimental recording. Could this be the recording of radio broadcasts
filtering through the air? Yup. Is it? Probably not. But, the buzzes,
tweaks and subtle variations in pitch make it feel like you are tasting
the airwaves. All that WiFi is now audible. The EMF from the electrical
outlet buzz in your head. Kinda sounds like the first Oval album at times
without any vocals, all the stutterings and skips are there, the
electrical transmissions Burroughs'ed out.--Don Poe

Harold Budd/Clive Wright - A Song For Lost Blossoms 2xLP
(Darla) [DRL198-1] $18.50
RELEASE DATE: 10-07-2008
Gatefold 2xLP blue vinyl limited to 500. Darla is pleased to offer a A
Song
For Lost Blossoms, a new record of ambient melody and transcendental mood
portals from minimalist/modernist master Harold Budd and friend
guitarist/composer/producer Clive Wright. A Song For Lost Blossoms nicely
builds on both artist's previous ambient work. A Song For Lost Blossoms was
recorded live and in studio at different locations including the artist's
homes, at The Red Cat (Disney Concert Hall), Los Angeles, and Clive
Wright's Desert Sky Studio, Joshua Tree, CA. These recordings represent the
very best of Harold and Clive's work together over the period 2004 to 2006.
Harold Budd is recognized as "The Godfather of Ambient Music". His works
are the cornerstones of the modern minimal and ambient cannon. Clive Wright
is a founding member of the platinum selling pop/rock band Cock Robin and
has worked as writer, producer and guitarist with Kim Carnes, Human Drama,
Tears for Fears members, Montell Jordan, The Black Eyed Peas and Peter
Gabriel. Budd and Wright met as residents of the beautiful and remote
Southern California desert community of Joshua Tree. With only just a
little imagination one can easily hear the influence of the Southern
California desert environment -- the sounds of its stark beauty, serene
quiet and otherworldly presence. No doubt an inspirational environment for
Budd and Wright to create music of such ambiance and beauty.

2562 - Techno Dread/Enforcers 12 inch (Tectonic) [TEC020EP]
$10.75
2562 limbers up with a stellar 12". The galloping, Ritalin-infested
skanker
"Techno Dread" harnesses the exuberance of Mala's forays into four/four
dancefloor ruffage, the depth and groove of recent Skull Disco and the
smoked piquancy of Deepchord/Berlin dubness. "Enforcers" displays brittle
but not-quite broken drums illustrating a new reign... a new strain of
garridge reborn. Warmth comes in the shape of a full-force, endlessly
inventive low-end line. Dubstep for dancing - rush the floor!
2562 - Aerial 2xLP (Tectonic) [TEC021LP] $17.25
RELEASE DATE: 06-10-2008
This is the debut full-length release by Dave Huismans aka 2562. After
releasing two of the fastest-selling 12"s on Tectonic in 2007, it was a
natural step to drop something truly stunning. If you can imagine a perfect
marriage between Benga or Skream-style rhythm and bass with Basic Channel
soundscapes - you will realize why everyone is getting so excited about
this album. If 2007 was a year for Burial and Pinch, then summer 2008
surely has 2562 written all over it.

Benny Ill vs. DJ Hatcha - Special 4 Track 12 inch (Tempa)
[TEMPA008EP] $10.75
Originally released in 2003, and the earliest available Tempa 12"
release
at this point. Tempa have firmly established themselves as one of the
leading dubstep labels, pushing the sound to a much wider audience than
most garage labels, and gaining the support of DJs as diverse as Ross
Allen, Andrew Weatherall, Norman Jay and Zed Bias. Big Apple/Forward's
infamous DJ Hatcha meets Horsepower Productions henchman Benny Ill in a
4-track head-to-head.
Bloody Mary vs. Sierra Sam - Spiel Bank 12 inch (Einmaleins)
[EINMAL032EP] $11.50
"Bloody Mary from Sender and Sierra Sam, boss of Toys for Boys are the
new
members of the Einmaleins family. The record is consisted by 2 tracks made
by the Berlin-based producers straight from studio to hit the dancefloors!
A side is a tight techno track with quirky sounds and atmospheric cuts. The
B-side is a simple but effective track, slow and sexy, good for start of a
set to warm up the dancefloor! This release is a secret weapon."
Brother Kite, The/Plumerai - Split 7 inch (Clairecords)
[FERN077] $5.75
RELEASE DATE: 06-09-2008
Track Listing: Plumerai "Vacant Eyes". The Brother Kite "We Can Never
Be
Friends". LIMITED to 500 copies. Clear vinyl in see-thru package. An idea
hatched during the recording of Plumerai's "Without Number" CD out on
Silber Records. The thought was to strip away the pedals and even
electricity and release a record that would simultaneously draw upon the
band's ability to evoke emotions and utilize one of the band's noted
strengths; the intimacy and power of Elizabeth Ezell's voice. After
consideration they sought out The Brother Kite to record a track for the
flipside. A Clairecords staple and another top-notch New England band known
for their shoegaze influences, they seemed like a perfect match for the
concept of stripping down their sound and writing an acoustic track..
Plumerai's "Vacant Eyes" relies more heavily on orchestration and layering
of instruments such as acoustic guitar, reed organ, violin (arranged and
performed by Clara Kebabian) and bells to accompany Ezell. While The
Brother Kite's "We Can Never Be Friends" is a more basic track with
acoustic guitars and a catchy vocal melody carrying the song. This stunning
and beautiful record comes on coke bottle-clear vinyl and is limited to 500
copies.
Carlos Giffoni - Zamuro LP (Important) [IMPREC201] $19.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-09-2008
Limited edition of 300 copies in a heavy stock screen printed jacket.
Numbered. A Zamuro is a dark South American vulture of great size. Zamuro
is also a solo composition piece for portable synth and analog filter. Side
A on this LP is a live realization of this piece recorded at the Compound
in San Francisco in 2006 (Mastered by Lasse Marhaug). Carlos composed and
performed this piece live on several tours in the US/Europe/Japan all
trough out 2006 and 2007, if you saw him live in those two years this is
the piece he performed. This was the most complete version of it that made
it to tape. Side B is a studio piece recorded live on a much larger modular
synth, based around the same theme, but with structural and tonal
variations not in the original composition. .This is pure psychedelic
electronic music.

On "I'm Loving," D1 comes with a fresh combination of dubstep and funky
house rhythms, while on the flip, he explores a darker direction with two
tunes that have featured in N-Type and Youngsta's sets for some time.
"Instep" brings the half-time beats with a unique D1 twist, while "Speed"
features an infectious jackin' synth riff cutting through the mix. Radio
and DJ support from Mary Anne Hobbs, Laurent Garnier, Caspa & Rusko and
Skream.

[SUS071EP] $11.50
Falko Brocksieper presents two hot remixes of tracks off of his Heavy
Day
full-length, remixed by Jay Haze and Mike Monday. Within 12 minutes, Haze
screws up your brain with spooky sequencer techno and chubby bass power.
Whiz-kid Monday takes it a bit more swinging and funky, and with prankish
footnotes and a bouncing substructure, he transforms the oppressive, trippy
"Lament" into a firework of cheerfulness.
Family Underground - Black Hole LP (Weird Forest) [WEIRD019LP]
$19.75
2007 release. "Family Underground drenched the East Coast of the USA
in
molten syrup last year and they toted along a tour CD-R entitled Black Hole
released by the fine folk of Secret Eye. Limited to 500 copies on black

Gui
Boratto & Martin Eyerer - The Island 12 inch (Audiomatique) [AM027EP]
$11.50
Brazil's Gui Boratto and Germany's Martin Eyerer present two hot new
productions on Audiomatique. "The Island" features easy, jakking beats
which skip amongst a rousing synth melody. This is half club track, half
open-air magic. The softer synth theme of "The Beach" seems derived from
classical piano roots. A beautiful contrast occurs between melodies and the
crisp crunch of claps and kicks which underpin the track. This is an
unmissable package and the first collaboration between these two
highly-acclaimed producers.
Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts - They Only Come Out At Night 12
inch (Musique Risquee) [RISQUEE015.2EP] $11.50
No description available at this time.
Guy
Gerber - Disorientation 12 inch (Supplement Facts) [SFR008EP] $11.50
No description available at this time.
Henrik Schwarz and Kuniyuki feat. Yoshihiro Tsukahara - The
Session 12 inch (Mule Musiq) [MUSIQ026EP] $11.50
"This is a collaboration track of Henrik Schwarz and Kuniyuki with
Kuniyuki
band guitarist Yoshihiro Tsukahara. When Henrik Schwarz was in Japan, they
did a live session together at party and after that, they had a recording
at Kuniyuki studio. After the recording, they brought same parts from
recording to their home and Henrik Schwarz and Kuniyuki made own version
with same parts. Henrik Schwarz version of A-side is simply brilliant and
playful. He made typical his deep house tune with psychedelic guitar melody
and a lot of percussion. Kuniyuki version of B-side is that this is more
clubby than usual Kuniyuki stuff. It remind a old school Detroit techno
like a galaxy to galaxy."
Hospitals - Hairdryer Peace LP (Hospitals) [SST1] $11.75
After a nearly Chinese Democracy situation, the new HOSPITALS LP
Hairdryer
Peace is finally here. Hairdryer is a ripper/apology for the band's
previous two albums. Scott Simmons had this to say about it: "Doesn't
really matter whether you loved or hated The Hospitals before, cuz this is
some year zero shit. This is the most psychedelic f***ing record in a long
time and there are no rainbows--no feather earrings--no beards. Mixed for
maximum hallucinations, it has the stoned riffs of a killer rock record,
totally cracked pop, pure headfuck, but more than anything else just an all
around perfect album. It's Chief Hospital ADAM STONEHOUSE with original
Hospital co-founder (and now EAT SKULL member) ROD MEYER, along with ROB
ENBAUM (also Eat Skull) and CHRIS GUNN from an island off the coast of the
future. Sounds nothing like any bands or anything else... Seriously, if a
better record comes out this year, next year, whenever.... I promise. Don't
be an asshole." Vinyl only, homemade covers, 500 copies.
Ido
Oshkopun - Out Of Burma 12 inch (Cynosure) [CYN028EP] $11.50
"With a mystical nature Ido's musical touch wields both finesse and raw
force displayed perfectly on side A with `Rangun.' A combination of Roland
808 and CR-78 lay the percussive carpet for a lush menage of melodic bone
like percussion, classic strings and haunting Bermese vocals. Most
definitely one of the most original tracks we've heard in some time. On the
flip with `Bpyinmana' Oshkopun follows up with a frenzy of classic drums a
la CR-78 thrown into a cocktail of effects and edits that fizz over into a
perfect drum dub."
Itamar Sagi - Black Gold 12 inch (Be As One) [BAO009EP]
$11.50
With remixes by Samuel L. Sessions & Chymera. "This ninth release
proves
how wide the range of techno is on Be As One, with different moods but
always with the same high quality standard. With `Black Gold' and its
remixes, BAO is indeed back to a more classic techno sound."
Juli Holz - Tränen Auf Dem Dancefloor 12 inch (Stil Vor
Talent) [SVT020EP] $11.50
"After what could be described as Stil vor Talent's hit single `3 Tage
Wach,' the latest addition to Oliver Koletzkis versatile label, Juli Holz,
shows just how diverse Stil vor Talent really is. Its all about good music
- without any genre or style boundaries! Juli Holz is a singer with a great
uncompromising voice and a superb feel for the dancefloor. These three
tracks are Electroclash 2.0, sounding how electro pop should sound in
2008."
Justice Yeldham & The Dynamic Ribbon Device - Birthdays LP
(Anarchymoon) [ANOK022] $13.75
Birthdays consists of two live sets by maverick amplified-glass player
JUSTICE YELDHAM recorded during his and Keg's recent tour of Europe. If
you've never heard of the guy you are in for a bloody treat. Using
concert-grade piano contact mics, he amplifies a sheet of glass and plays
it with his mouth and face, processing it with pedals attached to his belt,
usually barefooted. The results are unworldly, and hearing it you would
never imagine what created it, something an Aussie could especially
achieve. Like careening assaults of insect spaceships, he transports the
listener to other worlds of sound, ending most often in a crash of the
glass upon his head. He survives, bloody but alive, never worse for wear in
the morning. Side A was captured in Marseille on the eve of Justice's 35th
birthday while side B was recorded on Kegs birthday in Porto.
Collaboratively released in an edition of 600 copies across the world by
Anarchymoon Recordings (North America), Turgid Animal (Europe) and All
Thumbs Press (Australia).
Koen Holtkamp - Koen Holtkamp LP (A Room Forever) [EVP003LP]
$25.75
No description available at this time.
Kreon & Lemos - Lookooshere 12 inch (Resopal Red) [RSPRED022EP]
$11.50
"Following the prodigious success of the Kreon & Lemos Lookooshere EP,
Resopal Red is proud to present the remixes of the anthem. We're not sure
where and how all the guys find their obscure sounds, but here are the
remixes by Wighnomy Bros, Anthony Collins and Art Bleek. This is some
essential re-edit, re-arranged and remixed cosmic-disco or Greek-minimal
boogie."
Machinefabriek/Matt Davies - Split LP (A Room Forever)
[EVP001LP] $25.75
"A Room Forever. Concept and art direction by Joshua Zucker.
Photography
by Kurt Mangum. A Room Forever is an art project realized as a curated
series of limited edition 12" record LPs. Packaged in a custom-made box
with high quality digital C-print covers and letter pressed inserts, each
record features an original musical composition on one side and a field
recording on the other. Pressed in one-time editions of 300, A Room Forever
takes a unique and personal approach to the vinyl record LP. Conceived as a
physical manifestation of the Roadside Picnic Radio podcast, the project
draws upon the rich history and mythologies of audio recording to produce a
final object of art that will resonate uniquely within each listener. More
than anything, a room forever is inherently about the act of listening."
Major Organ & The Adding Machine - Major Organ & The Adding
Machine LP (Isota) [SODY31] $12.25
AVAILABLE AGAIN!!! An oft misunderstood modern psych-pop masterpiece
created by principle members of NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL, OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL,
ELF POWER, and OF MONTREAL. As twisty and turny as records get with songs
that stick in your head for days on end.
Marcel Fengler - Friction/Yaki 12 inch (Ostgut) [OSTGUT017EP]
$11.50
No description available at this time.
Mark E - Slave 1 12 inch (Running Back) [RB009EP] $11.50
"First off, we have `Slave 1' with its burning slow motion build up and
a
hook-line that will not leave your head for at least a week. The flip of
the medal, sees `Pulse Friction' giving off a warm synthesizer shower for
what seems like an hour. Finally, the incredibly bouncy `Human' tightens
the thumbscrew and should even make the ruffy and tuffy minded happy. Our
dear friends Dixon from shocking Innervisions and Gilb'r from rocking
Versatile are already in love with it, so please do not even try to resist.
E is for ecstasy!"
Mathias Schaffhauser - Holy Pause 12 inch (Adjunct)
[ADJUNTILL012] $10.25
"Mathias Schaffhäuser is name everyone in the techno scene
knows, no
introductions necessary. His production credits span over ten years and
include Force Inc, Kompakt and mainly his own Ware Records. Two moody late
night tracks and a remix by the curious newcomer Carola Pisaturo of Claque
Musique (Italy)."
Melvyn Price - Rhythm and Blues LP (Wax Poetics) [WPR004LP]
$18.00
"The late `60s were an explosive time in America. Flower power was
blooming, civil rights were in full swing, and while American soldiers were
fighting in Vietnam, American musicians were creating several brands of
rebellious music back home.
Mf
Doom - Yee Haw 12 inch (Molemen) [MR015] $6.75
BACK IN PRINT!!! A hot solo effort from underground hip hop favorite MF
DOOM. Hooking up with the MOLEMEN production team, Doom delivers the
uptempo and unorthodox-sequenced "Yee Haw," and backs it with the cut "Is
He Ill." Includes instrumental versions of each.
Mount Eerie - Black Wooden Ceiling Opening 10 inch (Elverum &
Sun, P.W.) [ELV016LP] $13.50
No description available at this time.
Move D & Benjamin Brunn - Honey 12 inch (Smallville)
[SMALL008EP] $11.50
"After building up a unique state of the art sound for ages - including
records on labels such as Bine, Source, Modern Love, Uzuri, Warp and many
others - Move D and Benjamin Brunn come along with a single on Smallville,
a teaser for their forthcoming album Songs from the Beehive. The Honey EP
takes a short trip into the world of two ultraspecial producers. Benjamin
Brunn and Move D cut these three pieces from their ultradeep live jams and
the result is magical."
Pan-Pot - The Remixes 12 inch (Mobilee) [MOBILEE037EP]
$11.50
Marco Resmann and Zander VT each perform their own magic on two killer
cuts
by Pan-Pot. Resmann's rework of "Ape Will Never Kill Ape" is a perfect
fusion of Pan-Pot's shadowy, percussive style and Resmann's own sensuous,
darkside sensibility. Zander VT turn their attentions to "Crank." The
original was a nervous, metallic groover, but Zander VT amp up on the
anti-anxiety meds to deliver a version that's looser and more upbeat.
Patrick Graser & Notic Nastic/Willie Graff & Tuccillo - I'm
Very Close/Paru Paru 12 inch (Liebe Detail) [LIEBE022EP] $11.50
"Patrick Gräser & Notic Nastic: `I'm Very Close': Berlin
newcomers Patrick
Gräser & Notic Nastic team up on this burning, dramatic track that
fuses
edgy building chords and jittery synth lines with a slow pumping
arrangement. A solid and continuous dancefloor moment, the insistent
bassline and synthetic drums merge with layered melodic-acid phrases that
suggest a central theme, building an intense trip.
Pele & Townston - Requiem For Three Cellos 12 inch (My Best
Friend) [MBF12043EP] $11.50

Philippe Autuori - 7 Peanuts 12 inch (Hypercolour) [HYPE009EP]

Pump Kinn & Don/Brian Miller & Kevin Shields - Virgin Passwords
LP (Weird Forest) [WEIRD050LP] $13.50
"So Cal noise Nor Cal. Recorded at the end of nearly 9 months of
touring,
Virgin Passwords reflects a long evolution in sound and concept for Brian
Miller & Kevin Shields. A combination of mechanical grindings and digital
sweeps, mortal shovings and sudden transportations into secret chambers
hold the secrets of the Virgins themselves. The Virgins that control the
universe. The mafia of the cosmos. Beyond the cliched metaphor of purity
and straight to literally not having sex at all. Because a Brian Miller &
Kevin Shields performance proves that a noise show can be (hyper)active,
crowd-engaging and knock everything to the floor without invoking angst and
self-loathing. In other words, without hate-f***ing everyone. Virgins. Pump
Kinn & Don: `Hijokaidan by DJ Screw.' One side apiece from each of these
duos of destruction." Limited to 300 copies with beautiful DJ-style jackets
designed by Aaron Winters at Abide Visuals.
Queers - Love Songs For The Retarded LP (Recess) [RECESS107]

being re-released on the unbowed vinyl format, same goes for THE QUEERS!
The first installment is their highly classic Love Songs For The Retarded
LP. All the songs on this album are glued forever onto The Queers set
lists. With greats like "Debra Jean," "Hi Mom It's Me" and "You're
Tripping," you can't ever ever ever go wrong.
Reynold - Faze Part 1 12 inch (Trenton) [TREN025EP] $11.50
"Samuel Rouanet aka reynold aka Duplex 100 (together with Phil Stumpf)
also
boss of Trenton is releasing here his first full EP on his own label. After
a year of serious boredom when it comes to techno music and especially what
is the so called minimal sound, he decided to release what is his own
vision of dance music. `Poison in My Mind' has a strong bass line and
triplets chords that drives you while the melody comes in and out. `Blue
Steel' is more of an old school anthem with strings and Detroit vibes.
`Craft' is what Reynold does the best, electro deep cinematographic tune,
close to the work he did on Persona with his My Favorite Films album. Like
it or leave it."

Spirit Catcher - Voo Doo Knight Remixes 12 inch (Mood Music)
[MOOD060EP] $11.50
"Who would have expected what happened with the Belgian Spirit Catcher
duo
after their early releases on labels such as Silver Networks, Missive,
Winding Road and of course Moodmusic. The original Voo Doo Knight release
on Moodmusic hit the shops in 2005 and it devastated floors all over the
world with the result of catapulting Spirit Catcher into the big league of
producers. After almost 4 years of constant touring and remixing, `Voo Doo
Knight' was still one of the highlights on their recent debut album Night
Vision on 2020 Vision. So we thought it's time to re-vitalize this classic
and asked the guys what they thought about the idea."

Tim
Green - Revox 12 inch (Dirtybird) [DBIRD017EP] $11.50
"At the ripe old age of 22, England's Tim Green already has five
releases
on Germany's esteemed Four: Twenty label (as TG), and more on the way to
Ritchie Hawtin's Plus 8 imprint (as Needles). Now, Dirtybird has nabbed
this youngster! At the heart of `Revox's unshakeable groove is a
deceptively simple chord sequence. It swells and recedes, climbing octaves
then resetting itself, as almost-discernable vocals mutter and twist in the
borders. It wouldn't be a Dirtybird track without that glorious dancefloor
surprise - an explosion of bells and squirming bass rounds out `Revox's
second half, setting the stage perfectly for the original chord's
triumphant return."

Sir
Victor Uwaifo - Guitar Boy Superstar 1970-76 2xLP (Soundway) [SNDW012LP]
$19.75
Uwaifo invented a unique style of highlife music that he called ekassa -
based on ancient rhythms and fused with modern highlife instrumentation and
just a dash of rock and soul.
