Joe
Grimm - Brain Cloud CD (Spekk) [KK015] $18.50
The seed for this music was planted when I participated in one of Glenn
Branca's 100-guitar symphonies. The sound was incredible: a deafening,
electric choir incorporating so many voices that the each element was
subsumed within the group sound. But I was struck even more by the
unrealized potential in Branca's approach; the sound was separated into
several identifiable voices, so that the impression given was of a
conventional counterpoint-driven music. I wanted to make a particulate
music that presented itself as a single mass of varying density, comprised
of tens of thousands of individual events. Soon afterward, I began to
immerse myself in the piano music of Charlemagne Palestine. I learned from
him that when two notes share a particular frequency in their overtone
series, that frequency can be made to sing out clearly -- a ghost tone, not
played directly, but arising from the interactions among the directly
played notes. I began to compose and improvise with this in mind -- I could
sketch out desired pitches, and then arrange webs of lower pitches that
coincided to produce those target pitches within their harmonic series.
Ken
Ikeda - Mist on the Window CD (Spekk) [KK010] $18.50
There are moments in your life when something changes as you hear and
become aware of the sounds around you. Why do the sounds that cups and
chairs make feel so distant? It seems that ‘I’ as an
existence won’t be
forgiven for being my ordinary self. The meaningless noise that
reverberates in the living room opens up the possibility of connecting
beyond the horizon... Then, I become alone and say goodbye to the
‘Me that
was pretending to be like me’. By assimilating these everyday
sounds I get
away from the everyday me and get closer, little by little, to the universe
of ‘eternity and nothingness’. At this point
– meaning the moment I change
– I enter a personal time and space which could never be shared
with
others. During the 2 years spent on this project I used an instrument made
with rubber bands and nails to document my daily involvement with sounds.
There exist various faces of ‘me’ and through the
process of recording I
became aware of the concept of ‘beyond the window’
and got lost in this
vague daily space. What could you see beyond the window? The whole universe
and at the same time the usual me living my daily, ordinary life.
Marc Namblards - Chants Of Frozen Lakes CD (Kalerne) [kal01]
$22.13
« Now the Sirens have a still more fatal weapon than their song,
namely
their silence. And though admittedly such a thing has never happened, still
it is conceivable that someone might possibly have escaped from their
singing; but from their silence certainly never. » Franz Kafka
Mathieu Ruhlmann + Celer - Mesoscaphe CD (Spekk) [KK014]
$18.50
The album 'Mesoscaphe' is a sound work dedicated to the 1969 voyage of
the
Ben Franklin, the naturally-propelled submarine created to explore the
currents of the Gulf Stream, and the nature of the sea. Half of the sound
is composed of original pieces of music, meant to symbolize a deepening
human element culled from memory, from strings, pianos, and electronics.
The other half of the sound is composed of natural field recordings, of the
Ben Franklin itself, as well as the surrounding oceans and habitats, with
the intention of providing realism through sound, just as if it were an
actual document from the voyage, of the surrounding ocean. The artists
exchanged their own original sounds with each other, allowing each artist
to experiment and remix outside of their own sound sources, with the
potential to apply our own sound methods to each others' sound sources, and
develop the concept even further. Titles were made to coordinate with the
movement of the voyage, creating their own story, in relation to the
progressing sounds. The final result is a documented literary and audio
interpretation of the voyage, from the perspective of 3 sound and visual
artists, of the experiences and surroundings of the crew of the Ben
Franklin, traveling for 30 days by the gentle glide of the Gulf Stream. We
hope to bring attention to an important event in history, overshadowed by
the moon landings, and for people to know the story of the revolutionary
submarine that explored the nature of the ocean, challenged scientific
development, and ended up in a salvage yard.
Minoru Sato (m/s, SASW) + ASUNA - Texture in glass tubes and
reed organ CD (Spekk) [KK012] $18.50
We have been performing “music” focusing on the
materialistic nature
(physical phenomena) of sounds by utilizing the reed organ and glass tubes.
Our music is composed and constructed in such a way that however the
phenomena we use reacts with the circumstances of the space –
the situation
of the site including the audience – our live performance
involves and uses
these conditions. Since these compositions are studio recordings however,
we decided to exclude acoustic spatial matters and the
‘one-time-ness’ of
live performances and instead composed the structure of resonances within
certain divisions of time. This is similar to textiles – weaving
“resonances”, rather than thread, in certain
patterns.
Opitope - Hau CD (Spekk) [KK011] $18.50
This an imaginary album traveling from the north to south, overlapping
the
images of transition of the four seasons. In reality, indeed one things
always leads to an end and I feel sad every time I think about that. In
this album, we tried to express this sorrow feeling changing gradually into
hope as we travel south. Seasons have no end. It always moves from spring,
summer, autumn, winter back to spring.. And just like the changing seasons,
the tracks in this album constantly shifts another and the last piece
connects to the very beginning which forms the never ending circle. We have
expressed the images of these "endings" with "never endings" by music.
These thoughts were brought up naturally during the making of this album
and it's not that we had this idea from the start. Another concept of this
album is "symmetry". There are 9 pieces in this album and is constructed by
track 5 being the axis of the symmetry - like in terms os composition, 1st
track is a piano piece and also the 9th track. The same thing goes to the
arrangements like you will notice sounds that forms contrasts between the
left & right speaker.
Preliminary Saturation - Staring At Empty Eyes CD-R (Dirty
Demos) [DirtyCDR030] $9.76
A recent review by Frans de Waard at Vital Weekly reads: "Suddenly it
all
came together. Preliminary Saturation was hard to avoid this week. This duo
of Wouter Jaspers (sometimes known as Franz Fjodor) and Steffan de Turck
(otherwise Staplerfahrer), both from the active forces of the Dutch city of
Tilburg, were playing at Extrapool this week, and on returning home I found
two of their releases. On stage I noticed a wide range of effect boxes,
mixing console, acoustic objects (including tin cans, jar lid and what
appeared to be sand) and mechanical devices. Their concert started out with
high pitched feedback but fared better when they started to explore the
objects with contact microphones and treated the sounds with their sound
effects. Both releases are alike the concert, but worked out better, even
when they too seem to be live recordings. All of the pieces last around
twenty to thirty minutes. 'Staring At Empty Eyes' is slightly under thirty
minutes and is more alike the concert I heard, less a noisy beginning. Here
things are 'mildly' noisy at the beginning with rotating sounds (mechanical
objects on surfaces?) which gradually goes down in volume but cranks up in
frequency. Once arrived in the area of a few crackles they built up their
sound and end up with much noise."

Yair Etziony - Flawed CD (Spekk) [KK013] $18.50
When i started working on this project i wanted to create two separate
albums, one with smoked jazzy feeling with emphasis on beats and second one
with only textures,a piano and pads. At that time i was performing a lot
with this sort of music in galleries, art events and museums. In my live
show performance i used to combine elements from both albums, i liked the
way it sounded and slowly i got the notion that i can fuse all the sounds
and ideas into one album. I tried to use the same working techniques for
all the tracks in the album, most of them were created on a computer, some
beats and stabs that were created on an old analog sampler. Most of the
work effort was to edit the raw material i had and than arrange in on my
computer. All composition deal with mistakes, non-perfect things and flaws.
I think that sometimes when dealt in the right way a mistake or a flaw can
be a beautiful thing, like a broken CRT monitor that still sends a signal.
I got my inspiration from day to day things like : walking at night, sounds
of machines working and office ambiance at night. During the process of
making the album i lost all my hard drive data and all the projects i
already created for the album were deleted. I never backup my work, my only
luck was to find a DVD with some of the projects thrown somewhere around my
studio (i burned one DVD to test the new burner).
Yop
- A Ltd. Lion Pup CD (Esc.Rec.) [esc.rec.20] $20.19
Yop is a singer/songwriter from Rotterdam. Like some sort of home-made
Brian Wilson variety he layers his songs, while at the same time stealing
some tricks from the likes of Robert Pollard, Grandaddy, Kristin Hersh,
Frank Black and Ray Davies. This free download is an esc.rec. re-release of
the 2006 original that was self-released by Yop, but holds a previously
unreleased bonus track to top the cake.

1-2-6 - Graveyard Paradise: The Complete 1 2 6 Taboo Recordings
1966-68 CD (Ugly Things) [UTCD2206] $14.00
Hailing from the coldest, northernmost region of Norway, 1-2-6
(One-Two-Six) were inspired by the sounds of the Beatles, the Kinks, the
Who and Bob Dylan, but blended these influences with an approach that was
distinctly European. The brilliant original songwriting of ASA KROGTOFT
allied simple beat group arrangements and melodic psychedelic pop with a
unique, often surrealistic poetic sensibility. This twenty-eight-track CD
anthology includes their complete works: the Curtains Falling album, non-LP
singles, demos and rarities, and both singles by Asa's post-1-2-6 band
TABOO, all from the original master tapes. Graveyard Paradise is the first
time this material has been released outside of Norway. It includes an
amazing array of original music: raw beat group rave-ups, dark folk-rock
excursions, post-Revolver/Pepper psychedelic moves, gorgeous orchestrated
pop, and heavier freakbeat sounds. The deluxe 16-page CD booklet is loaded
with rare pix and full liner notes.
Abbasi Brothers, The - Something Like Nostalgia CD
(Dynamophone) [DO-012] $14.50
RELEASE DATE: 05-26-2008
Something Like Nostalgia is a film for your ears, a cinematic glimpse
into
the purity of everyday life. Written over 2 years time, these 15 scenes are
like snapshots of daydreams, their soundscapes are their subtitles, and the
origin is not so very foreign. Shoe-gaze, dream-pop instrumental.
Adultnapper - Audiomatique Volume 2.0 CD (Audiomatique)
[AM003CD] $14.75
RELEASE DATE: 06-10-2008
After the devastating excellence of Audiomatique Volume 1.0, mixed by
venerable label don Martinez, it's time for the masters to reclaim their
techno crown. Steve Bug's imprint Audiomatique is back with a second label
compilation, seamlessly blended by NYC's arch tech selector, Adultnapper.
Audiomatique Volume 2.0 is a descent into the deepest realms of electronic
rhythm, veering from the spare, crisp minimalism of Gui Boratto and Martin
Eyerer's "The Beach," to the moody, strobe-lit melancholia of M_nus
producer Gaiser's "Found Guilty Mix" of Adultnapper's own "Juror No. 9." A
perfect snapshot of the label's diverse roster, Adultnapper subtly builds
the mix from stripped-back, echoing grooves to tougher, club-battering
technoid epics.
All
The Saints - Fire On Corridor X CD (Killer Pimp) [PIMPK005] $11.75
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
***Don't be fooled by the piss-stained mattress on the cover, the
debut
from this Alabama-raised Atlanta-based power trio is moderately clean for
one of Atlanta's most thunderous groups. ALL THE SAINTS not only commanded
their control of volume and intensity, but with their debut album have
proven their abilities in composition and arrangement. These ten songs
often flow together, creating a fully-realized conceptual album, without
being a "concept album." The stellar production of BEN H. ALLEN (Gnarls
Barkley, Animal Collective, P-Diddy, Christina Aguilera) compliments their
abilities as players and singers. Reference points include Loop, Gun Club,
Verbena, In Camera, Federation X, and Swans. The band has earned fans in
groups like Deerhunter, Battles, and A Place To Bury Strangers, and will
embark on a small East-Coast tour upon the release of Fire On Corridor X.
Ascend - Ample Fire Within CD (Southern Lord) [SUNN93]
$14.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
***ASCEND is a new collaborative musical project between GENTRY
DENSLEY
(ICEBURN, EAGLE TWIN) and GREG ANDERSON (SUNN O))), GOATSNAKE, ENGINE KID).
Both have been making music that has crossed paths several times in the
last 19 years. The most notable being during the '90s when Andersons' band
Engine Kid toured with and shared a split album with Densleys' band
Iceburn. During that time both were heavily experimenting with the fusion
of jazz (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, John Coltrane) and the dark
behemoth tones of influences such as The Melvins, Gore, Slint, and Caspar
Brotzman. Ascend re-visits some of the tones, and moods of their past works
as well as traveling into uncharted territory all done with the utmost
focus on heaviness and power. Of particular note is the vocal performance
by Gentry Densley. His voice is deep and ominous with a subtle Tom Waits
influence within the growls and gruffness that is emoted. Features
contributions from ANDY PATTERSON, STEVE MOORE (EARTH), BUBBA DUPREE
(VOID!), and KIM THAYIL (SOUNDGARDEN).
Black Sun Ensemble - Across the Sea of Id: The Way to Eden CD
(Camera Obscura) [cam083] $14.75
RELEASE DATE: 07-07-2008
Quite possibly the final BSE release after an illustrious career of
nearly
25 years. It marks a return to the beloved semi-acoustic style of their
first few releases, and also - due to public demand! - contains no vocals.
It is a mixture of new readings of past tracks & new compositions. The new
material offers a singular, dreamy vision of BSE's potentially final works.
The two title tracks, Across the Sea of Id and Eden Song, are reflective,
yet hallucinatory explorations into Jesus Acedo's unique compositional &
melodic sensibility. While Angel de la Guardia has a refined yet explosive
rock swagger, it is balanced by the meditation Perelandra & La Paz. The CD
also contains a video of the band performing the signature BSE piece "Dove
of the Desert".
Botticellis - Old Home Movies CD (Antenna Farm) [ANT525]
$11.75
The debut album from the BOTTICELLIS is polished, orchestral, and
surprisingly subtle, with a remarkably full and mature sound for such a
young band. The classic, larger than life production is full of delicate
flourishes; the Botticellis' stylized sound echoes the production aesthetic
of some of the great '70s pop records from Big Star, Chris Bell, and George
Harrison. "A classic is a classic the first time you hear it..../Old Home
Movies/, with phantom kisses and bygone ghosts of yesteryear jumping out of
the binding, is a sung benediction to great songs had and great songs yet
to come, a rare and blindly first offering."--Daytrotter
Brainbombs - Obey CD (Armageddon) [ARMAG012CD] $13.50
"Finally available again, the domestic CD version of the classic and
essential Brainbombs release. Out of print for several years & unleashed
again. Obey hits hard with 8 tracks of serial killer-inspired
dirge/noise/rock put through a No Wave filter. The audio equivalent of
watching Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer... or having dinner with Albert
Fish while Whitehouse records spin in the background."
Chap, The - Mega Breakfast CD (Ghostly International) [gi072]
$13.25
RELEASE DATE: 06-30-2008
They've become known & loved for their inimitable
pop/improv/disco/rock~Vwith~Vstrings sound & a furiously rocking live show,
complete w/ dance routines. It's the sound of the search for a heart of
gold in a world gone cold. It deals w/ sex issues, depression & classic
economics. It's all infectious, blistering pop music, but all the while
something is deliciously wrong here, making for what is sure to be one of
the most intriguing releases of 2008.
Chenaux - Sloppy Ground CD (Constellation) [CST52] $14.50
Sloppy Ground is ERIC CHENAUX's strongest, most accessible and most
dynamic
work in years. Constellation has long been champions of the man's
inimitable talents--as a songwriter, arranger and mind-bending
guitarist--and this new album should make these talents clear to the
nominally attentive listener. This is a collection of beautifully fried
love songs, highly original in compositional approach and instrumental
texture, utterly compelling in lyrical content and delivery. As Chenaux
says, "the lyrics are more concerned with what love does rather than what
it means...the time moving through these tunes is not one of the beginning
of love or the end or heartbreak of love (though I love that stuff too) but
more often in the middle (the working middle, the in between)."
Club 8 - Jesus, Walk With Me CDEP (Labrador) [LAB113]
$11.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-09-2008
5 tracks. Club 8's critically acclaimed album "The boy who couldn't
stop
dreaming" is pop music at it's most profound - and the most personal,
honest and beloved song in the whole collection spells "Jesus, walk with
me". On this new 5-track EP the title track is backed up by four brilliant,
exclusive tracks - two brand new songs and remixes by Jimahl and The Sound
of Arrows. The first new song, "What I'm dreaming of is something I could
have", perfectly highlights what everyone loved about their latest album.
Gentle, warm pop music as loveable as it gets. The other new track, "Take
me home", shows a new side of Club 8. It's minimalistic psychedelia and
colorfully mind-altering and hypnotic gospel pop! The first remix is signed
by The Sound of Arrows - Sweden's most promising new act with an approach
to music that bare some similarity to Saint Etienne around "Foxbase Alpha"
or The Avalanches. Their take on "Jesus, walk with me" is just as
surprising as it's genius. One of the most interesting ambient dub acts
today, Jimahl, rounds up the EP perfectly with an extreme make over of
Jesus. "Taking drugs to make music to take drugs to"? Possibly, yes--
"Jimahl's 8-minute remix settles into chill-out mode at the start... more
percussion and melodic snippets join as the song heads into the chorus,
then settles back into a wistful, spacious groove, with just a few phrases
shining out of the hypnotic mists." PITCHFORK. "This is just perfect simple
clever dreamy indie pop. Beautiful, you really need to go find it." (Organ)
"Focused on the melancholy pop that is their forte, Karolina Komstedt's
breathy vocals are very much to the fore on these ravishingly pretty
melodies. These songs about love and the fleeting nature of existence pack
an emotional punch. (**** Q) "--it throbs to the pulse of deliciously
bittersweet guitar melodies, a lifelong passion for The Smiths and even a
shaking of Latin percussion" (**** Metro) "--. dreamiest dreampop
imaginable, with Karolina Komstedt's feather-light voice placed delicately
over Johan Angergard's gently evolving backing tracks." (4 Stars, The
Sunday Times) "Themes of loss and death are beautifully rendered, as
melancholic as the pale winter sunlight." (NARC) "An absolute bundle of
Scandinavian indie-pop brilliance from start to finish-- (The Beat
Surrender) "They do this well, the Swedes. Clean guitars, vocals like water
over ice, frictionless." (Plan B) "exquisite pop" (Pitchfork Media) "The
sixth album by this Swedish duo is a collection of delicate indie pop."
(Under The Radar) "The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming presents a
masterclass in how to craft lovely and affecting songs, without ever
veering into preciousness or pretension. (Baeble Music) "The Boy Who
Couldn't Stop Dreaming is the perfect record to keep the days sunny and
long, and make us long for dressing up and riding in a Vespa." (The
Tripwire) "Exceptional stuff, recommended." (5 Stars, Babysue) "Club 8 have
reached new heights with their sixth outing" (9/10 It's A Trap!).
Cough - Sigillum Luciferi CD (Forcefield) [FF008] $9.00
RELEASE DATE: 05-27-2008
***Tune down. Smoke up. Let the feedback roar. Get ready to be
brutalized.
Richmond, Virginia's COUGH is whiskey-soaked, stoner doom at its ugliest.
Recorded at Volume Studios with SANFORD PARKER (Bured At Sea, Minsk), these
six songs will pummel your skull and rumble your insides. Imagine
all-consuming Eyehategod-esque sludge layered with the slow, forceful
shredding of Iron Monkey or Electric Wizard--only way more stoneded.
Daniel Zamir - I Believe CD (Tzadik) [TZ8125] $14.50
No description available at this time.
Daniele Baldelli & Marco Dionigi - Cosmic Disco?! Cosmic
Rock!!! CD (Eskimo) [ESK502168] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-24-2008
Eskimo delivers a fantastic follow-up to last year's highly acclaimed
Prins
Thomas mix, Cosmo Galactic Prism. This mix journeys from the public
dancehall to the disco, from the smooch to the shake, from the orchestra to
the DJ. Daniele Baldelli remains one of the first Italian DJs, who started
his illustrious career back in the `60s and became one of Italo-disco's
kings of the dancefloor. Cosmic Disco?! Cosmic Rock!!! celebrates a
turntable odyssey from a man who lived and breathed Italian disco, American
Rn'B and synth pop and pioneered the sound which has influenced countless
DJs and producers who currently mine the golden age of synth pop for
inspiration. A mixture of European records alongside American soul records,
rhythm and blues and funk combined with Afro style against Ravel, Steve
Reich, Jorge Ben, Depeche Mode and Malinke chants from New Guinea"
Depth Affect - Hero Crisis CD (Autres Directions In Music)
[Moulin018] $18.50
RELEASE DATE: 06-02-2008
The *Depth Affect* project was born in the new millennium in the
suburbs of
Nantes, France. In David Bideau and Remy Charrier's student rooms,
keyboards and laptops outnumbered Beach Boys and Autechre records. From
then on, they were set to start building the architecture of their music. A
few years later, with a handful of songs in their pockets, a few gigs and
their duet being completed by a team composed of a DJ and a VJ, their music
found its own personal path and their first album *Arche-Lymb* received
critical acclaim. At that time the band also offered free downloads of
remixes of Arche-Lymb tracks made by a wide cast of electronica musicians.
On top of that they worked on their live performance and developed a new
and original approach to the stage which they had a chance of displaying
live in several glorious French venues and festivals. In their new album
*Hero Crisis*, the colours of melancholy have taken over the naive beauty
and bucolic joy of their first record. In Hero Crisis, their songwriting
has become more direct, both harsher and colder, with catchy melodies
enhanced by an astonishing production. The twelve tracks of Hero Crisis mix
influences stemming from r'n'b, pop, hip-hop, ambient, click'n'cut and
dubstep, thus creating a new dreamy and feverish soundscape.
Douglas Armour - Light Of A Golden Day, The Arms Of The Night
CD (Social Registry) [TSR051] $13.25
The debut full-length from Los Angeles-based DOUGLAS ARMOUR. This album
finds the artist expertly blending tons of beloved poptones from days past
to create a hyper-literate pastiche that's equal parts nostalgia and
forward thinking. Echoing its title, the album has a structure that plays
off binary oppositions to create one of the most varied pop albums heard in
a long time.
Elliott Sharp - String Quartets 2002-2007 CD (Tzadik) [TZ8052]
$14.50
No description available at this time.
Explorers Club - Freedom Wind CD (Dead Oceans) [DOC007]
$13.25
THE EXPLORERS CLUB'S debut album, Freedom Wind finds The Beach Boys as
an
obvious touchstone, but dig a bit deeper and you'll hear flourishes of Paul
McCartney, the Byrds, Emitt Rhodes, ELO and doo-wop. Embracing a pop
blueprint from a time when great songs were played on the radio and
everybody loved them all, the Explorers Club has recorded the sweetest pop
record you are likely to hear this year. The Explorers Club are doing for
the summer beach song what Amy Winehouse has done for R&B or Sharon Jones
for funk and soul, what Antibalas have done for Afro-beat. They're
reclaiming the classics as their own, injecting them with life, and making
music that that transcends any era.
Fairlane Parkway - Memory Of Open Spaces CD (Kora) [TKR012]
$12.75
ZACHARY OKUN & RAJ GADHIA met in a quiet summer of college
unemployment.
Raj recognized Zach as the guy in the back of the dusty university
anthropology lab who diligently slept through monkey documentaries, waking
from deep sleep only to angrily protest discernable differences in the
skull specimens forced upon the class every week. In this manner things
came to a head and they were graduated, just as they decided to have a good
run at actually thinking. Reeling in denial, the two began recording
together in 2002. They were promptly kidnapped by an enthusiastic fan &
ushered into a studio. Limited Edition of 700 hand-numbered, die cut
sleeves.
Gable - Seven Guitars With A Cloud Of Milk CD (Loaf) [LOAF16]
$13.25
French pop heritage is littered with smooth and creamy icons:
Gainsbourg,
Karen Anne, Adamo, and Francois Hardy. GABLE, however, is a completely
different kettle de poisson. Wearing their influences on their
sleeves--Moldy Peaches, Meat Puppets, early Sonic Youth--they stick a big,
lovely lump of absolutely bonkers, stinky musical cheese in the face of
their suave ancestry. Seven Guitars With a Cloud of Milk is Gable's second
album, containing eighteen tracks clocking in at just under 40 minutes. The
songs cover such diverse topics as group suicide, the state of urban music,
self-realization, cats, and drunk foxes, in the best tradition of DIY bands
like The Vaselines, Violent Femmes, and Beat Happening. No exports outside
North America
Gates of Slumber - Conqueror CD (Profound Lore) [PFL034]
$13.25
It was only a matter of time before Indianapolis, Indiana's THE GATES
OF
SLUMBER gained recognition as one of the most prominent true doom/heavy
metal acts in the country. Spawned in the late '90s, the band emerged in
2004 after several demos with their debut, The Awakening, a breath of fresh
air in the metal underground. The album harnessed their influences--Black
Sabbath, Pentagram, St. Vitus, Cirith Ungol, Rainbow, Thin Lizzy--as a
solid foundation for their sound. Its follow-up, Suffer No Guilt, was
hailed as one of the best albums of its kind to come out in 2006. With The
Gates of Slumber securing a North American label for the first time, the
much-anticipated Conqueror is the band's first album released
domestically--and rightfully so, as it is their most accomplished, tight,
and focused to date. Featuring surging melodies, passionate vocals,
crushing riffs, wailing solos, and a storming rhythm section, the epic
Conqueror is a landmark release in underground metal. No exports to Canada

High Places - 03/07 - 09/07 CD (Thrill Jockey) [THR204CD]
$12.00
"High Places began as an experiment in collaboration: two people with
diverse artistic backgrounds coming together to merge their skills,
aesthetic tastes, and music-making approaches. Robert Barber grew up
listening to punk and hardcore, and Mary Pearson studied bassoon
performance. Both gravitated toward a DIY compositional style and shared a
love of layers.."
Indian Jewelry - Free Gold CD (We Are Free) [WRF004] $12.00
In 2006, several members of the INDIAN JEWELRY songwriting and
performance
team found the bitch of fame licking them on the hand. Blinded by vanity,
easy fame, self love, and the internet, they went into an early retirement.
Free Gold is Indian Jewelry's first full-length in almost two years. It is
also their most scathing with dirty hooks, shape shifting grooves, and a
lot of attitude. Free Gold is what people will desire. Look for them on
tour this spring and summer

Jeremy Jay - A Place Where We Could Go CD (K Records) [KLP187]
$13.25
This is a debut album containing ten songs, but really it is a
cinematic
escapade into the mind of a singular individual, JEREMY JAY. A Place Where
We Could Go is a statement of fiction and fact, exploring the shadowy
depths of an attitude: the romance of life without the people and things
that pull down the corners; create your own world. This universe may have a
fairy tale look; it may be illuminated by streetlight. But it will
definitely be a safe haven for the exploration of dreams. Think vast
landscapes of reverberating storybook endings populated by the more
charming characters from John Hughes' movies. Jeremy Jay: dancing, singing
and playing guitar. A Place Where We Could Go is your hardcopy of the
illusive, blonde, Jeremy Jay moon-roof vista. Buena.
Keiji Haino/Yoshida Tatsuya - Uhrfasudhasdd CD (Tzadik)
[TZ7265] $14.50

Kyle Bobby Dunn - Fragments & Compositions CD (Sedimental)
[SED052CD] $12.25
"Fragments & Compositions is a collection of long-processed recordings
that began at several universities and art centers visited frequently from
2005 to 2007. Working with classically trained musicians recruited on a
whim, Dunn recorded the often awkward sounds of the sessions and sparse
notes of the musicians as Dunn dictated.
Lodger - Life Is Sweet CD (Slumberland) [SL80] $12.00
Since forming in 2004, THE LODGER has thrilled informed pop lovers with
their special brand of classic English guitar pop. Starting with a string
of four singles and culminating in their brilliant debut album,
Grown-Ups--which drew comparisons to heavyweights like The Smiths and The
Wedding Present--the band has gone from strength to strength, developing a
polished, literate sound that shows a keen interest in critical pop
touchstones like The Go-Betweens, Aztec Camera, and Orange Juice but is
still planted firmly in today. More textural and varied than its
predecessor, Life Is Sweet is still filled with gorgeous melodies and
catchy tunes, but is also deeper and more thoughtful, full of emotional
peaks and valleys. Rather than just chip in with an album of "more of the
same," the band has paid extra attention to the arrangements, with
12-string and acoustic guitars, lap steel, and violin adding crucial detail
and depth to the tunes. No CD exports outside the USA
Low
Motion Disco - Keep It Slow CD (Eskimo) [ESK501887] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-24-2008
This is the debut full-length release by Low Motion Disco - secretive
producer(s) who know how to keep things on the down low. Following recent
singles Love Love Love Parts 1 and 2 featuring remixes from the likes of
LSB, Aeroplane, DFA's Still Going and Soft Rocks. Keep It Slow fuses found
sounds, field recordings and live instruments with lap top trickery,
providing us with 13 tracks of perfect horizontal dancing. From KLF-style
sample skulduggery to blissed-out electronics, dubbed-up beats and
uplifting melody hooks, Low Motion Disco open the door into their unique
world of super-slow house and funk-induced chill-out grooves. .
Magdalena - Lanean Sartzen CD (S.P.A.) [SPA1001CD] $21.00

Malcolm Middleton - Sleight Of Heart CD (Full Time Hobby)
[FTH044] $9.50
Following the critical success of 2007's A Brighter Beat and an
improbable
bid for the Christmas number one slot with We're All Going To Die, MALCOLM
MIDDLETON (ARAB STRAP) is back to business with a new, stripped-back
record. Sleight of Heart is comprised of tracks written during the Brighter
Beat sessions and a handful of cover versions. Initially conceived as an
acoustic LP--and largely remaining so--the album was recorded at Chemikal
Underground Studios in Glasgow. Middleton's recording band (featuring
MOGWAI's BARRY BURNS on piano, ex-DELGADOESs man PAUL SAVAGE on drums,
touring bassist STEVIE JONES, and JENNY REEVE on backing vocals) joined in
to flesh out the sound. There's plenty to cherish in the nine new tracks
here and it all amounts to a captivating record from a man who's fast
becoming one of the UK's most cherished artists. No exports outside North
America
Maluco - Right Time CD (Karaoke Kalk) [KK044CD] $14.75
RELEASE DATE: 09-16-2008
This is the debut full-length release by Maluco, a collaborative
project by
international musicians Max Loderbauer, Pier Bucci and Argenis Brito.
Maluco are sure to delight listeners with this summer-fresh release of
atmospheric dub soundscapes with electronic pop appeal. Tracks like
"Dreamer" carry you away to warm summer nights on the Mediterranean, and
whether you are driven into instrumental intoxication ("Evandro") or
seduced by Argenis' highly-accented yet excellent vocals ("Passport"),
Maluco make you feel comfortable. Flowing rhythms and melodies unite
various musical periods; "River" is a cover of the Brian Eno and John Cale
song, good old-fashioned reggae is evident in "Sam" and there are country
music influences hiding within "Doped." All in all, it's the softer sounds
that take the foreground and stimulate your sensitive synapses.
Marco Bailey & Tom Hades - E=MB2 CD (Mbelektronics)
[MBELEK041CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-10-2008
E=MB2 sees Marco Bailey team up once again with long term studio
partner
Tom Hades for his first artist album since 2004's Rudeboy. Marco Bailey
should by now need little introduction. Fifteen years of sacrifice and
dedication have seen Belgium's number one DJ break through the national
borders to join the big league of worldwide techno artists and Marco
Bailey's productions frequently appear in the set lists of Carl Cox,
Laurent Garnier and Sven Väth. Here, Marco and Tom explore their
favorite
exploits into the underbelly of the nocturnal club environment.

(Smallville) [SMALL001CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-24-2008

full-length, Songs From The Beehive. This is more than just another chapter
in deepness and soul, it is an overwhelming experience that flows deeply
and rises to the top. Appreciated by fans such as Ricardo Villalobos,

Steinhoff and Lawrence.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! CD (Epitaph)
[AE86943] $16.75
Nick Cave returns to his full time Bad Seeds co-conspirators for this
release. "Grinderman was deliberately spare and the concepts were pretty
simple," explains Cave. "With 'Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!' we allowed ourselves
to get expansive." It picks up where Grinderman left off, filled with
Stoogified electric guitar, driving beats, and Cave's literate, seductive,
and firmly tongue-in-cheek lyrics.

First vinyl release ever from this highly talented band. Their music
can be
best described as heavy and majestic riffs carved out of a massive syrup of
riffage and spacious melodies. It's almost like hearing some mysterious
'70s country rock outfit thawed out and refitted with mighty amplification,
sludgecore tempos, and shoegazey shimmer that conjures up visions of the
wide open prairies and looming mountains of the band's home terrirtory of
Colorado. As weighty as the melodic heaviness coming from the whole
"post-metal" camp, but coming from a different place altogether. ACROSS
TUNDRAS create a range of emotion and musical stylings from Neil Young to
Neurosis and unleash a powerful new statement of rustic, crushing
Americana.

Ass
- My Get Up And Go Just Got Up And Went LP (Static Caravan) [VAN167]
$18.25
Peering out between the mass of strings, hanging like vines, there must
have been a spark of childish curiosity. From the giddy playfulness of
youth all the way to the folk hinterland, Andreas Soderstrom has been
surrounded by instruments, exposed to the sounds of his father's bazouki
factory ~V an extraordinary melange of clattering noise and metallic
melody. That natural inquisitiveness has obviously paid off, and it surely
can't be a coincidence that a career in music beckoned. Trading under the
pseudonym Ass ~V it stands for Andreas Soderstrom Solo ~V for more than a
decade he has been the hitherto unknown man of Swedish pop, having played
with the likes of electro-pop priestess Jenny Wilson, digital folk
stalwarts Tape, offbeat folk-pop minstrel Blood Music, and Taken By Trees,
the latest incarnation of former Concretes singer Victoria Bergsman. All
that will change with the release of 'My Get Up and Go Just Got Up and
Went', the second full-length album from Soderstrom under his Ass moniker.
Soderstrom plays all of the instruments found on this quietly intoxicating
10-track record, the follow-up to his astonishingly assured, eponymous
debut ~V both released on Headspin Recordings. It finds him hacking through
the folk undergrowth, his fluid dynamic underpinning a stark melancholy
which simmers throughout. From the Britfolk finger-picking of 'I've Been
Here' to the austere 'Cool Water', the self-taught multi-instrumentalist
wrings a plaintive beauty from his fingers; penning profoundly moving,
largely non-vocal entities, augmented at various points by electronic
gurgles, horns and an [accordion?]. 'Wheels and Wings', with its chiming
guitar melody and horn counterpoint, is a rare vocal outing, Soderstrom's
subtle intonation adding a sweetness and warmth to proceedings. Harking
back to his debut, the elegantly swooning 'It Only Takes Minutes' revisits
the cyclical moments found on his previous outing, but there's an
atmospheric airiness infusing this record which leavens these near-macabre
hymns. Minimal and majestic, the repeated melody patterns twist in every
direction, wrapping and turning in on themselves like a maypole, before
loping to a folk-stained climax. Daubing layer on top of layer on an
intricately detailed canvas, Soderstrom's sleight of hand in combining
these varied textures is never more evident than on 'Escape From NY', which
buzzes and throbs in unison with his rhythmic playing ~V there's a sense of
delicacy and wonder cloaked by a dark foretelling; a hushed but audible
eeriness digging away at your subconscious, heightening that unease. The
low-key majesty of Soderstrom's gentle songs, like on closing track
Vertical Spar, is here in abundance. Channelling a hypnotic style which is
at times reminiscent of folk legends such as Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and
John Fahey, his crisp compositions nevertheless have an ultra-modernist
edge to them, digital elements seeping through and sounding perfectly at
home, but with a softly engaging feel rather than the clinical hum of
technology. 'My Get Up and Go Just Got Up and Went' is that rare kind of
record; bewitching and thougth-provoking, comforting and challenging. It's
a real treat, and a chance to hear the whispered charm of a subtly
disarming performer. To paraphrase George Clinton - free your mind, and Ass
will follow--Very Limited vinyl Edition of 500 copies in thick cardboard
stock, lyric insert and on purple wax.

Bloody Panda - Pheromone LP (Level Plane) [LP106] $13.50
NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! Driven by the mournful, melodic vocals of
Japanese front woman Yoshiko Ohara, BLOODY PANDA's transcendent sound finds
its roots in the dirge-like power of SWANS, the amplifier-worshipping
textures of EARTH, and the ethereal tension of SKEPTICISM, as well as in
various traditional styles from around the globe. The band synthesizes its
esoteric influences into focused, powerful, anthemic songs, hailed by
Decibel Magazine as "Khanate-caliber doom metal" and by CMJ New Music
Monthly as "New York microtonal funeral doom." Limited edition pressing of
500 copies packaged in gatefold sleeves.

Broombeck - The Clapper 12 inch (Opossum) [OPSM015EP]
$11.50
"Broombeck... say again? Wild speculations arose - as for example that
Broombeck might be an undercover alias of a certain Mr. Ali Shirazinia,
whom some of you may better know as Dubfire - but as far as we know up to
now, The Clapper is not a Dubfire production, sorry. However, let's not
focus on the Broombeck mystery any longer and a bit more on his wicked tune
`The Clapper' instead, which is nothing but a percussive peaktime
techno-monster that stomps lippediclap ahead, totally focused and
merciless, while using hammering wooden drums to set dancefloors on fire
and to let ravers crack up until they call for a rewind."

Doozer - Sheet Music LP (Pickled Egg) [EGG69] $15.00
Limited vinyl version. "THE DOOZER builds. He has previously built
stone
houses and wooden ships. He is currently building music. Raised around the
Fenlands of Cambridgeshire, in the arse end of nowhere, the city drew
closer and closer, the lights brighter and the time shorter. The city
informs his music. His music informs the city. Songs evolve around watching
and talking, buying and borrowing. Characters pass by, situations are
imagined, colours are added and the resultant is a forming song. His debut
album, Sheet Music, was recorded mainly on Saturday mornings, bright and
early. The songs weren't complete until the recordings were complete. The
spaces always changed. Instruments and voices were layered. Pop music was
the aim; pop music isn't quite the result. Pop music is The Doozer's music,
only filtered through all of the colours and sounds you've imagined when
walking through the street or down your lane or when your batteries died.
Musical reference points: Syd Barrett, Neutral Milk Hotel, Smog, none of
the above. A key player in the Cambridge underground scene, The Doozer has
worked in a number of projects and played shows with a range of artists
including Sunburned Hand of the Man, MV & EE, Flower-Corsano, Animal
Collective and Alasdair Roberts."
Dylan Nyoukis & Jaap Blonk - Dubbletwee LP (Ecstatic Peace)
[E#13B] $13.50
"Here is one of the most anticipated head-scratching meeting-of-the
(insane) minds recordings ever rumored to have existed: the blabber-gunk
vocalistix of Chocolate Monk honcho and musical zone/zap improv outsider
and founder of Decaer Pinga (nee Prick Decay) Dylan Nyoukis and the
high-energy, consistently startled and startling voicebox-tongue shredder,
Jaap Blonk. Nyoukis from the UK and Blonk from The Netherlands bash heads
and gums together to splat out a relentless and rapacious slew of ululation
and indescribable utterance. If vocal duo improv of the most bizarre order
is yr meat, then pull a stool up to this table and get a snoot full o'
what-the-f***. Wicked weirdness." LP only - full color jackets - 400
copies.
Eat
Skull - Sick To Death LP (Siltbreeze) [SB96] $13.25
EAT SKULL are a quartet hailing from Portland, Oregon, co-masterminded
by
ROB ENBOM (former bushwacker in the ranks of HOSPITALS and HOLE CLASS) and
another original Hospital, ROD MEYER (the greatest living genius of punk).
Previous Eat Skull efforts include a cassette-only EP and a pair of
7-inches, all of which might be out of print. Like their brethren and
forebears, Eat Skull runs a post pattern deep beyond pop and punk. They
bring to the game an extrasensory appreciation of New Zealand's South
Island Sound (Great Unwashed, Axemen), Cleveland art-damage skronk (Modern
Art Studio, X-X), and the wretched excess of forgotten Midwest hardcore
(Stiff Legged Sheep, Chemotherapy). Vinyl-only edition of 800 copies.

Free Blood - Never Hear Surf Music Again 12 inch (Rong)
[RONGDFA01] $7.50
First up on Rong's shiny, new imprint with DFA is FREE BLOOD's Never
Hear
Surf Music Again 12-inch. This two-piece Brooklyn band has more street cred
than you can shake a stick at, and for good reason. Consisting of MADELINE
DAVY (OCTOPI NYC) on the microphone and JOHN PUGH (formally of !!!) also on
microphone, Free Blood has got some serious, serious heat on the mic and
mixing board. Hey, really, who needs other band members when you're rockin'
a style this damn hard? "Never Hear Surf Music Again" is an unpredictable
druggy number, a mangled hybrid of Beatles-esque melodies fused angrily
with a Butthole Surfers song. It's followed by the steaming mayhem of
"Quick and Painful," a raucous affair that delivers a swift kick to the
jewels. On the flip, the BARFLY boys stretch things out a bit with a
nine-minute Walter-Gibbons-style disco remix of the title track. After
tearing the roof off and burning down the place with their mind-crunching
sound, this band is ready to clear out any venue at a moment's notice. Free
Blood, coming to a dirty warehouse near you.

Jeremy Jay - A Place Where We Could Go LP (K Records) [KLP197]
$12.00
This is a debut album containing ten songs, but really it is a
cinematic
escapade into the mind of a singular individual, JEREMY JAY. A Place Where
We Could Go is a statement of fiction and fact, exploring the shadowy
depths of an attitude: the romance of life without the people and things
that pull down the corners; create your own world. This universe may have a
fairy tale look; it may be illuminated by streetlight. But it will

Joan of Arc - Boo Human LP (Polyvinyl) [PRC152-2LP] $13.00
Done with the young and hungry rat-race of band-life, Joan of Arc now
exists at the pace their real lives allow. By combining one week of studio
time, a stack of songs and a sign-up sheet allowing participants to drop in
whenever they could, each track on Boo Human is as wildly different and
uniquely constructed as the groups who produced them. The combination of 14
musicians whose previous collaborations include Wilco, Iron & Wine, Bonnie
Prince Billy, Beth Orton, and Prefuse 73 yields a truly diverse record that
is as intense as it is intimate. Marked by intricate guitar melodies, non
cognitive wailing and tense instrumentals, Boo Human is Joan of Arc's most
accessible, cohesive album since 1997's How Memory Works. From the
additively syncopated "Laughter Reflected Back" to the unignorable, poetic
"9/11 2," Joan of Arc truly proves that doing it their way is the right
way.

here 4 funky tech-house tracks with powerful and exciting beats in a pure
Joseph style quickly recognizable. On A1. `Farlocco combines deep synth and
exciting rhythmics. A2. `Highest Tower' with incisive drums and mental
subtle melodies. On the flip, B1. `Para Scaramantia' combines cut voices
and heady bleepy sounds. And finally B2. `Cyprinus Carpio' in a more
melancholic atmosphere composed by a few melodics, high bells and lil acid
bleeps."
Justice Yeldham & The Dynamic Ribbon Device - Birthdays LP
(Anarchymoon Recordings) [ANOK022LP] $14.00
"Birthdays consists of two live sets by maverick amplified-glass player
Justice Yeldham, recorded during his & Keg's recent tour of Europe. If
you've never heard of the guy, you are in for a bloody treat. Using
concert-grade piano contact mics, he amplifies a sheet of glass and plays
it with his mouth and face, processing it with pedals attached to his belt,
usually barefooted. The results are unworldly, and hearing it you would
never imagine what created it, something an Aussie could especially
achieve. Like careening assaults of insect spaceships, he transports the
listener to other worlds of sound, ending most often in a crash of the
glass upon his head. Mastered by the god-like Rasheed of Dubplates
(Berlin), the record has been collaboratively released in an edition of 600
copies across the world."

Lair of the Minotaur - War Metal Battle Master LP (Southern
Lord) [SUNN91] $15.25
LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR's third full-length on Southern Lord is a concept
album about solving conflicts with a big f***ing axe. The songs are a mix
of the thrashing aggression and mega-riffage of their previous album, The
Ultimate Destroyer, and the unrelenting beatings and Sabbath chugs of
Carnage, mixed with a new emotionless ferocity reserved for an executioner.
Epic packaging by JEREMY MOHLER.

singles Love Love Love Parts 1 and 2 featuring remixes from the likes of
LSB, Aeroplane, DFA's Still Going and Soft Rocks. Keep It Slow fuses found

LSD
and the Search for God - s/t 12 inch (Deep Space) [ds01] $13.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-23-2008
This masterful collection of five lysergic-dipped, guitar-based gems is
delightfully reminiscent of the early Creation Records sound. Turn it on &
tune in to a psychedelic trip, where swirling guitars & playfully
flirtatious boy/girl vocals travel through dreamy pop hooks & fuzzed out
drones. Limited to 1000.
M.S.K. - Lunar 12 inch (Institubes) [INS12024EP] $12.25
"MSK's peculiar brand of floor-packing techno is gloriously relentless,
quite dark, even claustrophobic. After an innocuous bass `n' beat prelude,
`Side Story' launches into the build-up to end all build-ups, a seething,
snarling beast ostensibly in search for some innocent people to maul, for
some buildings (hospitals and nurseries, preferably) to destroy. And when
Das Glow shows up and reports for remix duties, whose side do you think he
chooses to be on? Not ours. He's right up there with the demon-beast,
taunting us puny humans with his own style of deft programming, acid synth
lines and abrupt breaks."
Maluco - Right Time LP (Karaoke Kalk) [KK051LP] $14.75

Bailey's productions frequently appear in the set lists of Carl Cox,
Laurent Garnier and Sven Väth. Here, Marco and Tom explore their

collective minds with her supremely amazing cello noise, energy, vibration,
friction and true sound feeling music knows that in a world of wild and
mind-snapping improvisors, Okkyung is one of the most exciting players to

deep and resonant, at once furious and hushed string, bow and wood music

Ways and Top Drop on 2000 and One's 100% Pure imprint. Played out by the
likes of Richie Hawtin, Adam Beyer, Paco Osuna, Karotte and Loco Dice. The
album Poldermodel is quite an appropriate name for the bunch of killer
tracks on the label, which resulted in a collection of older and new
material, all built around the infamous Polder groove.

or Audiomontage, who made a lot of deep tech-house hearts happy with his

"Longevity is something we talk about a lot in dance music nowadays.
But
timelessness, however frequently mentioned, is in fact a rare and sadly
lacking ingredient in much of today's music. Well, you can thank Steve Bug
and the Poker Flat crew that this isn't the case here, as we present the
second unavoidable installment in the Raw Essentials feature, reviving some
classic moments from the Raw Elements catalog. Reborn for another chance to
rock it, Russ Gabriel's intense tweaked-out remix of Steve Bug's
`Honeymoon' finds the coveted position of A1."

"Sven Weisemann, who was recently very busy by providing remixes and
tracks
for the likes of House Cafe Music, Styrax Leaves, Styrax, Liebe*Detail,
Rotary Cocktail, Freund Der Familie, ProgCity, Deep Trax and Meanwhile, is
now coming up with some fresh killer stuff for Mojuba, the musical place of
origin. The A-side `Kiss Of Abana' is a catchy dancefloor monster with
banging percussive drums and trademark Weisemann chords. The B-side `Amity'
seems to keep it cool in the beginning, but that's only the prelude to a
funky feast of deepness!"

$16.00
RELEASE DATE: 06-24-2008
Allez Allez are one of those early `80s hidden gems of the Belgian new
wave
dance scene who shone so brightly for a few years (1981-1985) and then were
gone - but not forgotten. Based around the writing and production nucleus
of Brussels-based Kristiaan Debusscher and Nicolas Fransolet, a third
dimension was added by American vocalist Sarah Osbourne. Early hi-tempo
hits such as "African Queen," "Allez Allez" and "She's Stirring Up" became
global club classics. Allez Allez were the funky follow-up to the
Brussels-based collective Marine. The trademarks of Allez Allez were highly
danceable and catchy rhythms, African influences and high quality singing,
forming a powerful and funky mixture.

George Coleman - Bongo Joe LP (Mississippi Records) [MR022LP]
$13.50
"There can only be one Bongo Joe, and that is the incredible George
Coleman. Bongo Joe is perhaps the world's only virtuoso player of the empty
oil drum, a man so ingenious that he could even turn petroleum refuse into
something musical and sublime. Recorded on the streets of San Antonio in
1969 by Chris Strachawitz (Arhoolie Records). Bongo Joe drums on his oil
cans with a thunderous, tympani-like effect, while discoursing rambling,
insightful and hilariously funny lyrics that are often times more stories
than songs. One of our favorites, available on vinyl for the first time in
39 years."
