Anat Ben-David - Virtual Leisure CD (Chicks On Speed Records)
[COSR038CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 07-08-2008
This is the debut full-length release by Anat Ben-David, a video and
performance artist working and living in London since 1999. She is a
pioneer of the video-performance genre in Israel. Among Anat's works are
the "Hugo Boss Provocation" and "Popaganda Live." Towards the end of her
Fine Art studies at Goldsmiths College, Anat focused on the relationship
between the fascist leader and the pop star as dominant performers in front
of a desiring audience. Being a performance artist, she decided to take on
the pop star role by joining electro punk rock act Chicks On Speed and
collaborating with Peaches. For Anat, the most personal and original
expression as an artist lies in a live performance - using body, voice and
appearance. Live events could result in an art performance or a live gig
that derives from punk performance and pop music. The essence is the live
interaction with whoever is in front of her - viewers or camera. Besides
her activity being a band member of Chicks On Speed, Anat Ben-David still
focuses on her solo projects. After having worked as a painter, video and
performance artist, it is now time to strengthen her enormous musical
output which has always been part of her art. Virtual Leisure is nothing
more than an exciting musical expedition through a lot of genres -
interpreted by 100% Anat Ben-David. Like label colleague Planningtorock,
Anat is deep into the classical orchestral string thing. Works of Franz
Schubert and Mozart inspired the album, as well as Russian futurism and a
Frederick Hollaender song originally performed by Marlene Dietrich. Mixing
a wide range of musical styles, Virtual Leisure achieves an enigmatic
result: never leaving the roots of female electro-punk and performance art,
with every second as supercharged as if derived directly from a live show.
Anat Ben-David creates something seldom and rare - an oeuvre of energetic
classical electro-pop hymns.

California Oranges - Imperial Hearts CD (Darla) [DRL193]
$12.25
RELEASE DATE: 07-22-2008
New release date. Our Sacramento, CA indie-pop all stars return with a
gem
of a pop/rock album full of hooky choruses, call and response guitars and a
super tight power-pop rhythm section. A pow-pow-powerful good good feeling!
Just as you'd expect from this seasoned music family. Bask in the summer
sun with the fourth album from the golden state's California Oranges and a
healthy dose of the sunshine power pop they're known for. Underlying the
power is a healthy dose of pop: Delicately concocted, contemplative songs
exploring life's ups and downs. The quintet has hit their stride on
Imperial Hearts. The record features the same line up as their 2005 release
Souvenirs: John Conley (Holiday Flyer), Verna Brock (Rocketship, Beanpole,
Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), Ross Levine (Sinking Ships), Katie Haley
(Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), and Matt Levine (Sinking Ships). The album
was jointly produced by the California Oranges and Dana Gumbiner (Night
Night, Deathray). Imperial Hearts was mixed by long time friend of the
band, producer/engineer, Eric Stenman (Saves the Day, The Comas, The Cab).
The California Oranges construct songs filled with, "soaring boy/girl
harmonies, rapid-fire licks of squeaky clean and buzz saw dirty guitar
work, consistently up-tempo beats, and melodies that would make tone deaf
kitten haters want to sing along" --Popmatters. "Power pop has rarely
sounded as sweet." ~V-Treblezine. TRACK LIST: 1. Brand New Spine, 2. We've
Got Time, 3. Travel Writer, 4. Anywhere USA, 5. I Still Hold On, 6. Silver
Shoes, 7. Feel Better, 8. Waiting Is Slow, 9. I Told Grace, 10. Matter Of
Consequence, 11. I Won't Let You Back In, 12. When I Sleep.
Chicks On Speed - Art Rules CD (Chicks On Speed Records)
[COSR035CD] $10.75
RELEASE DATE: 07-08-2008
This is a 3-track CD single by Chicks On Speed for their own Chicks On
Speed record label. Art Rules is a campaign: a performance, a song, and a
video. "Art Rules" performed by Art Rules Crew, has already been shown in
important museums like the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the Museum of Modern
Art in New York and venues in Madrid and Vienna; in the near future,
museums in Kyoto and Tokyo will follow. This CD is the first document from
their campaign, co-produced by COS and Christopher Just. This Euro-trash
anthem against the art trash shown at the 2007 mega-events in Kassel,
Venice, and Basel was produced in a hotel room in New York, just after the
COS performance at the MoMA. Includes a rock treatment and a remix by
Christopher Just.
DJ
Woody - Selected Works CD (Gigolo) [GIGOLO220CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 07-08-2008
Even though Berlin-based DJ Woody is a member of the Gigolo crew, this
is
Woody's first solo album to be released on Gigolo Records. And what a fine
entry onto the Gigolo scene it is: sure to get people in the know talking -
and dancing. You can also hear the influences of Chicago jack-house,
Detroit techno and various electro extracts on this record, with Woody's
talent for minimal changes in melody at the forefront of his sound. This
album is packed full of rocking tracks, and one listen will leave you
wanting to hear more. Woody's sound is fresh and modern, but at the same
time, he has utmost respect for the old-school - all of which can be heard
in his music.
Fallen Leaves, The - It's Too Late Now CD (Parliament Records)
[PAR003] $17.25
RELEASE DATE: 06-30-2008
From defining Subway Sect to first & last word in garage punk Rob
Symmons
is back with The Fallen Leaves. London's very own group THE FALLEN LEAVES
was formed in 2004 by Rob Green (Rob built himself a reputation singing at
Bernie Rhodes' "Club Left" and by performing with Vic Godard's Subway Sect,
notably supporting Siouxsie & The Banshees at the Music Machine in '80),
and by original '76-'78 Subway Sect guitarist/founding member Rob Symmons
whose distinctive discordant, stinging guitar sound was one of the defining
features of the original Subway Sect which he formed with best friend
Godard. Memorably Subway Sect's debut gig was at the now historic "100 Club
Punk Rock Festival" in Sept '76 where they kicked off the first night,
followed by their heroes the Sex Pistols, and The Clash. Subway Sect turned
out to be one of the most original and innovative bands to emerge from the
festival. Their first single "Nobody's Scared" was released in Mar '78, but
unfortunately for Symmons by the time second single "Ambition" came out
(Dec '78) Bernie Rhodes (manager of both Subway Sect and The Clash) had
persuaded Vic Godard to sack the rest of band, and then somehow lost the
band's original album recordings. "Ambition" went straight to the top of
the indie charts selling 20,000 copies in a week and stayed there for nine
weeks. Symmons' amazingly didn't play guitar again until he and long time
friend Green formed The Fallen Leaves. Symmons & Green share a love of 60's
garage music, and ever-so stylish vintage suits. THE FALLEN LEAVES'
recordings are alive, heated and humming - preferring as they do to use
vintage valve amps & mics, and recording live with no overdubs and minimal
technology. They hark back to DIY punk days and concentrate on delivering
impressive songs and performances. "Rob Symmons, The Fallen Leaves
guitarist looks impossibly sharp. Thirty years ago he held a Fender Jaguar
high on his chest and helped Subway Sect become one of the few groups from
the Punk era to make good on the promise of artistically challenging the
Rock hegemony. Now, after so long away from the stage, he again wields his
guitar like Jimmy Cagney shooting off his Tommy Gun. He's mesmerising;
particularly so since the sound he creates is just as it once was; a
confrontational cacophony of clashing rock'n'roll destroyed and reassembled
with strange and awkward angles. The same, but different." Plan B
Faun Fables - A Table Forgotten CD (Drag City) [DC370CD]
$11.25
"A Table Forgotten is the first taste in an ongoing series of projects
by
Dawn McCarthy on a theme that's been largely unexplored in recent times:
the age-old practices of tending a home and its immediate impact upon our
day to day lives."

Ginormous - At Night, Under Artificial Light CD (Hymen) [Y765]
$16.75
RELEASE DATE: 06-23-2008
'if i had more time, i would have written a shorter letter.' in the
case of
ginormous' third album on hymen records, bryan konietzko did take more time
and produced his most direct and potent musical message to date. 'at night'
is even more emotive and personal than ginormous' previous work, all while
resisting self-indulgence. these eleven tracks were objectively beaten and
honed until they each became the most condensed and vivid versions of
themselves. bryan konietzko shines his bright, 'artificial light' on the
elements that hoards of electronic music composers fear the most: melody,
song structure and brevity. the album is an intense and addictive
experience, charging forward with the nervous energy of urban, nighttime
cityscapes, speeding subways and foreboding factories. there is an organic,
human element at the center of this unrelenting journey, in the form of
symphonic and acoustic instruments and warm bass lines, balancing the bold
compositions. the album starts with 'punches to carefully coax,' a proud
peacock of a track where thick, jagged planes of ice collide with razor
sharp synth strings. 'melted circadian' bristles with a
chromatically-fractal melody that spins like a neon helix in vertigo.
konietzko parades a passionate assortment of prepared guitars with a
muscular beat in the sweeping 'coiled so tightly.' the title track
confidently trudges like a phalanx of tungsten-clad shadows pursuing a
cloud of glittering insects. 'from deep bore holes' hypnotizes with an
unsettlingly lingual snare drum that tries and fails to speak, possibly
warning of the molten, rubberized synth melody that waits in the depths,
poised to scald. finally, 'awakening the magpie in all of us' sails on a
slow bonham-esque dream-beat while dozens of chimes and metallophones pull
the 43-minute album to its inevitable, timely conclusion.

with (f)light jerôme chassagnard, a member of the french project
ab ovo,
presents his first solo work. he is accompanied by befriended artists like
flaque and guillaume eluerd (nimp). what can we expect from an artist whose
influences and preferences range from electronica and ambient to pop,
ethnic music and drum'n'bass? whose preferred authors are a. de st.
exupery, and andre gide, e.a. poe and ray bradbury? whose favorite movie
directors are stanley kubrick, david lynch and steven spielberg - just to
name a few? what looks like an eclectic puzzle at first glance makes
perfect sense after listening to this outstanding album... each track is
carried by intense, emotional moods that take the listener from warm and
soothing tranquillity to disturbing and yet unknown places with proficient
subtlety. flowing ambient landscapes based upon varied rhythms include
beautiful, sometimes slightly sad melodies - only a glimpse of the darkness
behind the mirror of technology. all of this accented with sampled acoustic
instruments and the appropriate use of voices and guitars - this album
holds a perfect balance between beat and drift. a captivating piece of work
- essential listening to all those who wish to enter an abstract parallel
world - yet, not so abstract that they'll get lost.

Noa
Babayof - From a Window to a Wall CD (Language Of Stone) [LOS008CD]
$12.75
"Much is made about the lack of originality in music. `Everything has
been
done, and done to death' people decry. This is a very modern attitude, and
perhaps more than a bit flawed. Music has always been a continuum. Styles
and traditions are passed from one generation to the next to be cherished,
replicated, altered or reinvented. Just as one individual looks to another
for identity and support, so one song looks to the last for meaning; a
place in the grand structure. Noa Babayof does what many before her have
done. She is a folk musician in the singer-songwriter tradition. She pays
homage here, stretches boundaries there, and most OFten plays within the
structures formed by the greats that preceded her. This in itself is not an
easy task. Very few have what it takes to make it on a stage where what
separates the weak from the strong is neither record sales nor charisma,
but the greatness of the songs. This is something, I'm sure, Noa is
reminded of each time she picks up her guitar to meet the challenge."
Paul Flaherty/Randall Colbourne - Bridge Out! CD (Family
Vineyard) [FV055CD] $13.50
"Don't call it a comeback. Bridge Out!, the first release in almost a
decade by the outlaw duo of saxophonist Paul Flaherty and percussionist
Randall Colbourne, is better thought of as a renewal, a reawakening of a
collaboration which has lain dormant for too long.."
Radio Dept. - Freddie and the Trojan Horse CDS (Labrador)
[LAB111] $10.50
RELEASE DATE: 06-09-2008
"It's time ~V once again and more clearly than before ~V to show our
standpoint. 'Freddie and the Trojan Horse' is about the untruthfulness of
the Swedish right-wing government and how the leading party seized power by
portraying itself as supportive of the workers." --THE RADIO DEPT. In the
beginning of 2007 people started talking about new material from The Radio
Dept. There was even a rumour going on that they were working on two albums
simultaneously and that both would be released in May the same year. In
other words; two albums merely one year after the release of the previous
album "Pet Grief". Those who had followed the band for a few years and know
how they work probably suspected this would not happen. "Freddie and the
Trojan Horse" is a first taste of their upcoming album "Clinging to a
scheme" due to be released on September 10. The new songs are said to be
influenced by minimalistic post-punk, krautrock, repetitive "motorik" beat
and ambient noise. Maybe "Freddie and the Trojan Horse" doesn't represent
the upcoming album very well. But what do we know!? If the truth's to be
told we haven't heard that much more of their, almost mythical, new
recordings than anyone else. Still, we're have no worries whatsoever. We're
only full of expectation and belief in the songs. Whatever they sound like,
we're confident that they'll be of the same amazing quality as "Freddie--"
The Radio Dept. "Freddie and the Trojan horse" is right now at #1 at
Elbo.ws which compiles more than 2800 blogs. TRACK LIST: 1. Freddie and the
Trojan horse 2. Closing scene 3. The room, Tarzana 4. Closing scene pt. 2

Ricardo Villalobos - Vasco Part 1 2x12 inch (Perlon)
[PERL069EP] $24.00
"First part of Ricardo's new contribution for Perlon entitled Vasco EP.
Two
original compositions by mister Villalobos that get remixed on the B-sides
by Shackleton and San Proper. `Minimoonstar' on the first record gets a
special underwater treatment by ex-Londoner Shackleton (Skull Disco). On
the A-side, we find a special 12" edit of the original to make it fit on
wax. This time the remix gets delivered by Amsterdam-based San Proper, who
is known for his superb releases on Rush Hour."

Seelenluft - Birds and Plants and Rocks and Things CD (Gigolo)
[GIGOLO233CD] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 07-08-2008
This is the fifth full-length release for Beat Solèr
(Seelenluft), and his
first for Gigolo Records. Birds and Plants and Rocks and Things goes from
the psychedelic to the contemplative, combining his usual harmonious style
and classic pop structures with lo-fi electro, chanson, and disco. Not as
club-based as his last album, and more focused than the album before that,
Seelenluft presents himself as a mature but fresh, experienced song and
sound aesthete who is experienced, but not a know-it-all. With its variety
constantly creating a homogenous effect, Birds and Plants and Rocks and
Things is a masterpiece of discipline - a dance album for shoegazers, the
living room soundtrack for club heads, the rock album for IDMers and the
electro album for Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine fans.
Sian Alice Group - The Dusk Line CD (Social Registry)
[SOCIAL063CD] $8.75
No description available at this time.
Silver Summit - Silver Summit CD (Language Of Stone) [LOS007CD]
$12.75
"That Silver Summit is a New York band is undeniable. The darkness and
frenetic claustrophobia of NYC ebbs from every sonic pore of the band's
debut long player. New York City is nothing, though, if not trace elements
of the globe's disparate cultures (made uniform through earth and steel and
flesh). Multiculturalism (a dreaded word, I know) informs Silver Summit's
sonic character as much as the blackened brownstone facades, hidden public
gardens and slumbering subway commuters must. Where else then to seek
unmitigated conflations of metal, dream-pop, oriental, British folk and
other harmonious dissonances than in the band's own musings? The musical
layers are infinite, as are the listener's chances at discovery. Silver
Summit is: David Shawn Bosler: electric/classical/acoustic lead guitars,
percussion, backing vocals; Sondra Sun-Odeon: vocals, slide/rhythm guitar,
baglama saz, mandolin, keys/piano, cymbals, percussion."
Simon Wickham-Smith & Richard Youngs - Veil (For Greg) CD
(Jagjaguwar) [JAG137CD] $13.50
"Originally released in 1997 and having sat in storage unit purgatory
(growing finer) for the greater part of a decade, Jagjaguwar proudly
unearths and re-distributes this visceral British take on American outdoor
spirituality. `Veil (For Greg) is a carousel ride inside a digital rock
tumbler, a battle between gnomes and mercury termites for a maple tree's
soul, and the reflection of a pile of Moog turtles in a bathroom mirror's
swamp sweat. Throbbing Gristle reimagined as zen garden desk accessory.' -

Children of the Sixth Root Race - Songs From The Source CD
(Drag City) [DC365CD] $12.75
"Songs From The Source is a lost-and-found 1973 recording of The Source
family. These twelve songs were recorded live in the Hollywood Hills as a
rehearsal for a concert date that Spirit of `76 - aka YaHoWaH 13, The
Savage Sons of YaHoWa, Yodship, and FireWaterAir, now known as Children of
the Sixth Root Race - had at the Whisky. A 1/4" tape copy of the recording
was found in Chicago in 2006, though no-one is really sure how it got
there. Djin Aquarian, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for Spirit of `76,
recalls being sent on a mission to Chicago later in 1973, where he believes
he left the tape with an old friend. Though this rehearsal wasn't meant to
be released at the time, there are probably no other recordings as complete
of the band doing these songs. The Spirit of `76 had a different sound than
the one YaHoWaH 13 made with Yahowa. Songs From The Source has more
r'n'b-grooved energy, with splashes of synth and organ, a female vocal
chorus and streamlined fusion rhythms backing the uniquely Yahowan lyrical
populism of songs like `Godmen' and `Lost Dead But Hoping.'

Karen Dalton - Green Rocky Road: The Loop Tapes, Pine Street
Recordings CD (Delmore Recordings) [DEL002CD] $16.75
"CD gatefold Japanese mini-LP jacket of never-released 1963 home
recordings. Discovered on the same reel-to-reel tapes that housed the
Cotton Eyed Joe release. Remastered at Abbey Road Studios by Peter Mew.
Ultra-rare recordings since Karen Dalton only released 2 LPs. Historic
recordings since these 1963 home recordings prove KD's influence on her
famous friends and peers (Bob Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim Buckley, Tim Hardin).
As close as one will ever get to hearing the record Karen Dalton would have
made in 1963. Unusual CD packaging, gatefold jackets, similar to `60s heavy
cardboard LP jackets w/inner sleeves. 8-page booklet with beautiful, newly
unearthed photos of Karen Dalton from 1962-1963. Liner notes by Dick
Weissman."

A
Different Jimi - I Don't Know Why You Say 12 inch (It's) [ITS001EP]
$11.50
"Yes, he is a member of Egoexpress. But no, he isn't Egoexpress. He is
a
different Jimi. After Egoexpress, he went back to school again, an
undertaking he has since dismissed, despite a top grade point average, to
become a musician (again). He plays the recorder, badly but
enthusiastically but that is of no real account because for him, the music
happens in the clubs. Since early 2007, A Different Jimi has been at the
turntables - with disproportionate success - and has a residency in
Hamburg's renowned Golden Pudel Club (where he hosts the party series Fit
for Jazz, Unfit for Jazz and F*** for Jazz). Apart from this solo project,
he works in collaboration with Die Sterne synth player Richard von der
Schulenburg and the future megastar Gay MC. And now, on the side, he and
his congenial buddies have founded the label It's. As the label's first
official act, the president of It's (Jimi) has released his own solo debut
12". You might think: it's that easy, isn't it? But those who know A
Different Jimi know that master Jimsen never makes it easy for himself.
Like a conscientious smithy, he hammers and drives until all those little
pony feet are hooved and clad with the best of shoes. And if that iron
isn't at least 100% excellent, then it goes back into the fire. But finally
three hot irons have made it on to black gold. Two of them will get you
galloping across the dancefloor: `1753 Angelo' and `I Don't Know Why You
Say.' Two poppy house tracks - because house is the sound of now and
exploding harmonies are Jimi's unique way of conquering dullness with a
different kind of musical euphoria. The third track `My Hang' has the
beauty of a Moondog composition, something that is more than hard to find
these days. At long last - something really fine."

[COSR035EP] $10.75

Emptyset - Doxa 12 inch (Caravan) [CVAN003EP] $10.25
"The third release from fledgling minimal tech imprint Caravan outta
Bristol brings us two wicked floor burners from Emptyset. Many of you will
know these guys from the two 12"s on Future Days that absolutely blew our
nuts with the meanest blend of Sleeparchive-styled minimalism and dubstep
shaped subs that just creams it on any system. The Doxa EP separates the
styles over two sides, with `Endoxa' functioning as a wicked minimal techno
track similar to Marcel Dettman's first EP for MDR, with a shifted groove
reduction hinging on a grinding bass driven rhythm while `Episteme' really
turns on the sub pressure with some sick tones and shapes really driving
the track into abyssal techno territory. Fans of Dettmann, Sleeparchive,
October, XDB and all your other favorite reduction technicians will be all
over this beauty. Mean." -Boomkat

end.user is one of the cornerstones of the modern eclectic electronic
music. releases across many platforms have built him into a juggernaut. a
usually prolific artist, having recorded for hymen, ad noiseam, sublight,
cargo, and many others, he took 2007 off, working on something very
special: his debut on ohm resistance and the 2x12'' vinyl version on hymen
records. having relocated to san francisco, a new lease on his creative
power is demonstrated adroitly over the entire album. left shows the most
range of end.users album making career. intensely personal, intensely
musical, and just plain intense at points, the album showcases a
spectacular array of skills across the board. from radio play material
(black light) with australian vocalist sol thomas, to collaborations with
and remixes by influential electronic acts like scorn, to absolutely
stunning, no boundaries drum n bass, the album is diverse and full of
powerful compositions. compelling from start to finish, left is the

tracks that can be found on the cd release, including the black light remix
by scorn. furthermore there are two re-edits on side d which are vinyl-only

Forsaken - Hypnotised/Fighting Spirit 12 inch (Immerse Records)
[IME008EP] $11.00
"Bristol-based Forsaken has been producing his uniquely musical mix of
beats and bass for several years now, garnering attention from across the
world, the web and blogosphere, but vinyl releases have been scarce save
for a tune on Immerse Records' Substratum EP and a 12" for Peverelist's
imprint Punch Drunk. Luckily, Immerse Records, celebrating its 2nd year,
steps once more into the fray to deliver an imaginative twelve from
Forsaken which is joyously unfettered by trends or orthodoxies, and full of
his obvious love for music, melody and colour. `Hypnotised' takes a snippet
of Tweet as its mantra and builds a bumpy groove around it, where busy
kicks and snare drums are surrounded by snaking bass, and a subtle skank
punctuates the organic blendof Rhodes and strings. Heads down, eyes shut
and let the beats run riot. `Fighting Spirit' takes a more epic approach,
blending eastern zithers with a wild selection of ethnic percussion that
takes a cue from London's emerging Funky scene. Mixed with thunderous bass
and soothing pads, Forsaken carefully balances the mood to create a
sure-fire future classic."

MGR/Xela - Shipping Gold/Calling For Vanished Faces LP (Barge
Recordings) [BRG004LP] $12.75
"Barge Recordings is pleased to pair MGR and Xela on vinyl as the first
in
a series of split LPs. Shipping Gold/Calling For Vanished Faces treats the
listener to two moving pieces that both compliment and contrast one another
in style and compositional approach. Developed musically from two entirely
different places, MGR's Mike Gallagher and Xela's John Twells respective
careers have led them to this unique crossroad, a powerful recording
capturing both artists at their creative primes. MGR / Shipping Gold:
Hyper-slow development and dread-ridden tension building reveal themselves
in Shipping Gold as in past MGR work, as well as the subtle swelling and
closing of sonic space. Shipping Gold attracts our ears particularly due to
its dramatic use of guitar in the foreground. Composed with both acoustic
and electric guitar and effects, Mike's vigorous attack's and pitch-bent
decay over a slowly morphing theme in a minor key behaves like some unknown
light guiding us; its rays looming over an intense psychic landscape. Xela
/ Calling For Vanished Faces: Musically, it would be useless to categorize
Calling For Vanished Faces as `noise,' `sound art' or anything
aforementioned. In basic terms, every time we listen to this utterly
mind-altering composition we discover something new; something to grab on
to within its lush spectrum of dynamics. Bombarded with pulsating drumming,
distant early-music inspired vocal harmonies, guitar distortion, morphing
electronic buzzes and guitar feedback, Calling For Vanished Faces is a
sonic arcade of sorts and delights the listener with each passing
experience."

Amboy Dukes, The - Jouney To The Center Of The Mind LP
(Mainstream) [MAINS/6112CLP] $15.00
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1968. This is the
limited edition colored vinyl version. The guitarist of this group is a
rather unfortunate human being and we can't bring ourselves to print his
full name, sorry. "Journey to the Center of the Mind, The Amboy Dukes'
second album, was released in April 1968 on Mainstream Records. The cover
features 50 different marijuana smoking devices. The title track was
released as a single and climbed the U.S. pop chart to number 16. ***
****** wrote the music for Steve Farmer's lyrics, even though ****** had
never smoked a joint in his entire life."
Art
of Lovin', The - The Art of Lovin' LP (Mainstream) [MAINS/6113CLP]
$15.00
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1968. This is the
limited edition colored vinyl version. "The Art of Lovin' (Massachusetts)
sang of mind elevation and higher knowledge of sorts without preaching a
particular religion. The Mainstream production is on par for the
Chicago-based blues & jazz label which tended to hold back when recording
psych bands such as Big Brother & the Holding Company, Tiffany Shade,
Growing Concern, Bohemian Vendetta and Orient Express. The Art of Lovin's
talented female singer Gail Winnick wasn't given a chance to develop a
stronger persona, and critics have described her unkindly as a faceless
Grace Slick. Hardly any tracks on their 1968 LP (& single) are as
interestingly arranged as `Paul's Circus' which opens the album
auspiciously; none match the power of `You've Got The Power.' Nonetheless,
the last song (`State Of Mind') finally gets in the groove with some good
guitar before the album ends. The 11 short songs left me wanting more."

Children of the Sixth Root Race - Songs From The Source LP
(Drag City) [DC365LP] $14.75

Fred Neil - Trav'lin Man: The Early Singles LP (Fallout)
[FO2091LP] $20.50
Previously reissued on CD by Fallout, now issued on deluxe LP format as
well; 180 gram virgin vinyl. Fallout Records presents Fred Neil's early
collected singles. As the author of standards including "The Dolphins,"
"Everybody's Talkin'" and "Other Side To This Life," Fred Neil needs no
introduction to music fans. But before becoming a folksinger and profound
influence on Bob Dylan, Tim Buckley, John Sebastian and others, he worked
as a jobbing singer, songwriter and session musician around New York. His
early songs were recorded by artists including Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison,
but his own six pop and rockabilly singles, released between 1957 and 1961,
sold in tiny quantities and have rarely been heard since. They are gathered
here for the first time ever, offering a fascinating and historically
important insight into one of the most celebrated singer-songwriters of all
time.
Freeport - Freeport LP (Mainstream) [MAINS/6130CLP] $15.00
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1970. This is the
limited edition colored vinyl version. Heavy organ rock from Ohio.
Cleveland, 1968-1972. Formally known as Paper Sun and Freeport Express.
"Paper Sun was formed in early `68 or so. Although not sure of the original
lineup, in February 1969 the members included Eric Janson (guitar and
vocals), Kevin Raleigh (keyboards and vocals), Craig Holt (bass), and Bill
Stallings (drums). With this lineup they recorded some songs at Landen for
the ill-fated Abbey Group deal. After Chess pulled the plug on the national
distribution, a very limited local pressing of two songs - `Sweetest Thing
On My Mind' (written by Phil Okulovich using his `Jason Richards' pen name)
and `Here Comes Tomorrow,' written by Raleigh - was done on the Abbey
label. Paper Sun, befitting the Traffic-inspired moniker, played a
`progressive' style of late `60s rock sounds, and were popular at teen
dances, such as the Hullabaloo clubs, around the area. They recorded an LP
in Miami for Mainstream records, which included several originals and the
Eric Carmen song `I Need Your Lovin'.' -Buckeye Beat
Henry Tree - Electric Holy Man LP (Mainstream) [MAINS/6129CLP]
$15.00
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1969. This is the
limited edition colored vinyl version. "Produced by Bob Shad, 1969's
Electric Holy Man differed from a lot of other early-1970s Mainstream
releases in that it showcased a progressive streak rather than the popsike
sound that was common to the label. Moreover, for a trio, these guys
sported a surprisingly full sound, helped in no small measure by Markish's
impressive voice. `Mr. Fear,' their Traffic cover and the extended title
track showcase that interesting jazzy streak with some stunning work from
un-credited jazz guitarist Bill DeArango. Mind you, there was still plenty
of fuzz driven guitar (check out the second half of the title track), but
it didn't come close to these other highlights and the group's most
commercial effort; the ballad `Lady Of Day' was also the album's most
disposable offering." -Lajso Sound Ltd.
John Berberian - Expressions East LP (Mainstream)
[MAINS/6023CLP] $15.00
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1964. This is the
limited edition colored vinyl version. "John Berberian is considered to be
one of the finest oud virtuosos in the world. He has been featured in
numerous concerts and dances throughout the United States, Canada, and
South America. John is known for a series of successful Armenian and Middle
Eastern recordings and has recorded with such major companies as: MGM, RCA,
Roulette, Verve and Mainstream Records. Expressions East and Oud Artistry,
were record breaking in sales. John also recorded three LPs under his own
label, Olympia Records. John Berberian possesses a rare versatility of
talent, academic knowledge and sensitivity to both his music and his
audience. His inimitable style has brought him fame and popularity and he
has been most influential in perpetuating Armenian and Middle Eastern music
in America." -johnberberian.com
John Berberian - Oud Aristry LP (Mainstream) [MAINS/6047CLP]
$15.00
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1965? This is the
limited edition colored vinyl version. "Another reissue of the ultimate oud
master. This is the follow-up to Expressions East and it is no less an
impressive affair. Again on this album John has brought together some of
the finest exponents of Armenian, Turkish, and Arabic music, including
James Shahrigian (bass), Souren Baronian (clarinet, bongos), John
Yalenezian (dumbeg), Jack Chalikian (canun), Steve Pumilia (finger cymbals,
def, dumbeg, tambourine), John Valentine (guitar, dudoog) and Bob Tashjian
(vocals). `Aziza' is a driving Arabic instrumental with the oud and bongos
setting the pace in frantic counter action." -from the liner notes.
Josefus - Josefus LP (Mainstream) [MAINS/6127CLP] $15.00
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1970. This is the
limited edition colored vinyl version. "Authors of two albums published in
1970, the Texas based Josefus are the quintessence of hard psych made in
the USA - a gritty sound featuring prominent guitar and a solid and agile
rhythmic base. This second album by Josefus, released a year after their
debut, confirms their place as one of the most interesting and
underestimated bands of the era. Largely influenced by early Zeppelin and
British blues, Josefus deftly brought late sixties hard rock into the `70s,
anticipating sounds that would later become synonymous with bands like ZZ
Top and giving birth to a genre that would eventually give way to heavy
metal."
Katmandu - Katmandu LP (Mainstream) [MAINS/6131CLP] $15.00
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1971. This is the
limited edition colored vinyl version. "This U.S. 1971 band included Bob
Caldwell and Bob Jabo, the latter of whom had been in Miami's Shaggs.
Scarce, keyboard-oriented hard rock. Caldwell would go on to have the big
hit `What You Won't Do For Love' in 1977. The group was playing the Miami
circuit when they were discovered by Little Richard. The album is more on
the R&B/blues side, and has some nice guitar & keyboard work (a fine example
is `Cotton Mouth'), the guitar work at times reminds of Steely Dan. A solid
album." -Red Telephone66 blog

Last Nikle, The - The Last Nikle LP (Mainstream)
[MAINS/6122CLP] $15.00
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1969. This is the
limited edition colored vinyl version. "Originally released in 1969 in the
U.S., The Last Nikle features members Lenny and Wally McDaniel, Mike

Rouselle. Funky psych-rock featuring a cover of Cole Porter's `I've Got You
Under My Skin.'
Lincoln St. Exit - Drive It LP (Mainstream) [MAINS/6126CLP]
$15.00
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1970. This is the
limited edition colored vinyl version. "Lincoln Street Exit's sole album is
one of those efforts that's generated considerable attention throughout the
collecting community over the years. Formed in 1964, the original line up
consisted of Paul Chapman, drummer Lee Herres, singer/guitarist Michael
Martin and bassist Mac Suazo. A rarity in that it was one of the few
mid-1960s native American rock bands (all four members were New Mexico
Sioux) to actively tour and record, the group struggled for six years with
little recognition; managing to release three instantly obscure singles
during that timeframe. By the time the band was signed to the Detroit-based
Mainstream label, Chapman had died replaced by guitarist R.C. Gariss.
Teamed with producer Brad Shad 1970's Drive It! served to showcase material
from Martin and non-member Tom Bee. Sure the band's anti-war sentiments
(`Man Machine' and `Time Has Come Gonna Die') weren't particularly original
or noteworthy. Similarly their isolated stab at pseudo-Gospel (`Going Back
Home') was at best misguided. On the other hand, propelled by Martin's
likeable voice, tracks such as `Dirty Mother Blues,' `Teacher Teacher' and
`Straight Shootin' Man' offered up a compelling set of blues-oriented hard
rock." -Bad Cat Records

Nucleus - Nucleus LP (Mainstream) [MAINS/6120CLP] $15.00
Exact repro edition of this LP, originally issued in 1969. This is the
limited edition colored vinyl version. Not to be confused w/the UK
jazz/rock group of the same name. "Canada's Greg Fitzpatrick, Sebastian
Agnello, Danny Taylor, Hughie Leggat, and John Richardson were teenagers in
The Lords Of London, who played to their peers on weekends. They released
several singles in the mid-'60s, scoring a Canadian hit with `Cornflakes
And Ice Cream.' However, it failed to ignite the attention of Americans and
the group began a slow evolution into progressive sounds and a new name -
Nucleus. Through day-long rehearsals they would jam extended progressive
rock treatments, many of which would be recorded in 1968; Bob Horne
replaced Agnello on keyboards as the band headed into the studio for their
first and only LP written entirely by Greg Fitzpatrick. However, it took a
year to get interest for the record, which was released by Chicago label
Mainstream, and by the time it was released in 1969, the band had distanced
themselves from it. And yet, the album became a cult favorite throughout
the North American Eastern seaboard, and its first single, `Communication,'
was played fervently despite its excessive length." -Jam! Music
Randy Weston - African Cookbook LP (Atlantic) [SD1609LP]
$10.25
Exact repro LP. "This fine, long out-of-print album by jazz
pianist/composer Randy Weston is available again. Long one of jazz's best
(and most underrated) composers, Weston was one of the first American jazz
musicians to investigate and embrace the African influences in jazz. (He
lived in Africa for a time in the 1970s.) A spare yet melodic, Thelonious
Monk-influenced pianist, Weston led a great band in 1964 - when African
Cookbook was recorded - featuring the big Texas tenor sax of the late
Booker Ervin. The rest of the band plays with inspiration and restraint.
Weston weaves the African influence subtly into his inviting compositions -
though the influence, Weston might say, was there all along. His tunes are
warm, catchy, rich with the flavors of Monk, Duke Ellington and African
music. Listening to this album is like sitting down to a sumptuous meal,
one you wish to savor." Personnel: Randy Weston (piano, celesta); Big
Black (vocals); Booker Ervin (tenor saxophone); Ray Copeland (trumpet,
flugelhorn); Vishnu Wood, Lenny McBrowne (bass instrument); Harrold Murray
(percussion).

Mainstream LPs, this compilation runs the gamut from mind-altering
psychedelia to jangly folk to Anglophilic rock. The original LP of this
