Arthur Russell - Love Is Overtaking Me CD (Audika Records) [AU1010CD] $15.00
"Four years ago, Audika Records began releasing the exceptionally varied, long sought-after music of Arthur Russell, and in the process has succeeded at helping the beloved, late artist find the broader audience he always believed he would reach. A new generation of listeners and critics has come to appreciate Russell as a visionary and an influence upon a broad range of today's most compelling musical artists. On October 28, Audika will bring to light an as-yet-unavailable side of Russell's body of work-the most rare and, at the same time, arguably the most accessible part-in Love Is Overtaking Me, which comprises 21 demos and home recordings of unreleased pop, folk and country songs from his vast catalog. While much critical and popular affection for Russell's music has come about well after his untimely death from AIDS in 1992, many fellow artists believed in his genius and were drawn to collaborate with him during his lifetime. The legendary producer John Hammond (Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen) recorded Russell on several occasions; a number of these recordings will finally heard on Love Is Overtaking Me. So, too, will songs recorded with various incarnations of The Flying Hearts, a group formed by Russell and Brooks whose shifting lineup included, by turns, Jerry Harrison, Rhys Chatham, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon and Peter Zummo as well as larry Saltzman and David Van Tieghem. Several other Russell projects are represented on Love Is Overtaking Me, including The Sailboats, Turbo Sporty and Bright & Early. Compiled from over eight hours of material, three years in the making, Love Is Overtaking Me reaches back further to Russell's first compositions from the early '70s and spans forward to his very last recordings, made at home in 1991. Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear contributed mixing, restoration and editing to the album, whose tracks were selected by Audika's Steve Knutson, Ernie Brooks and Russell's companion, Tom Lee. A number of the songs feature prominently in Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell, Matt Wolf's film, which had its world premiere this year at the Berlin International Film Festival and will be released theatrically and on DVD this fall by Plexifilm. Love Is Overtaking Me is the fifth release of Russell's material by Audika Records, whose work has proven that the music remains as contemporary today as when it was first recorded. The label launched with the disco/new wave collection Calling Out Of Context (2004) and continued with a reissue of the cello-and-voice masterpiece World Of Echo (200S); the instrumental compositions double-disc First Thought Best Thought (2006); and the hip-hop-inspired Springfield EP (2006), which includes a DFA remix of the title track. Extensive Love Is Overtaking Me liner notes by Tom Lee provide an intimate perspective on Russell's diverse catalog, which spanned an extraordinary diversity of styles and won the love of artistic communities that would seem utterly disparate, from Philip Glass, John Cage and Allen Ginsberg to rock bands like The Talking Heads and The Modern lovers; the pre-Studio 54 disco-party scene of Nicky Siano's Gallery and David Mancuso's loft; and DJ-producers like Francois Kevorkian and Larry Levan, among others."

Asad Qizilbash - Sarod Recital/Live In Peshawar CD (Sub Rosa) [SR283CD] $14.75
Asad Qizilbash has been the only master of the sarod in Pakistan since 1992, keeping this traditional instrument and its music alive. Asad was born in 1963 to the famous violinist K.H. Qizilbash, who was responsible for closing the gap between Western and Eastern classical music. After attending a concert performed by his future Master, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Asad decided to devote himself to the instrument. Today, Asad Qizilbash has the honor to perform regularly at his President's house where Head of State Representatives, monarchs, diplomats and guests from all around the world have witnessed and appreciated his unique style of classical narration. Peshawar is the capital of the Northwest Frontier Province in Pakistan. The city, once called Purushapura, "City Of Flowers," was the capital of the ancient Greco-Buddhist center of Gandhara. Over the centuries, it has been the entry-point to invaders, conquerors and refugees. It remains an important military crossroad today. This, Asad Qizilbash's sarod recital in Peshawar, was carried out under extremely perilous and rather singular circumstances. An outstanding performance -- a moment of freedom from war. Asad Qizilbash (sarod), Mustafa Khan (tabla).

Joy Division - In The Studio With Martin Hannett 2CD (Interstate) [INTERSTATE10798] $18.75
Signifying one of the most important JOY DIVISION discoveries to date, Cargo Records is, with the approval of his family, releasing MARTIN HANNETT's mix tapes of the 1978 and 1979 Cargo Studios, Rochdale sessions, plus Hannett's other mixes of songs and sound effects from Strawberry and Britannia Row. Hannett had a habit of running quarter-inch tape machines throughout all Joy Division recording sessions and had an agreement with the band to create his own versions of the recording sessions. He went with the band to various studios and continually remixed what he recorded and experimented feeding what he had recorded through his AMS delays while playing around with synthesizers. It is Hannett's use of these weird and wonderful sounds that makes Joy Division's records stand out above any other punk or post-punk band, and this CD provides unprecedented insight into the process of the man who made it all possible.

Kraftwerk and the Electronic Revolution - Kraftwerk And The Electronic Revolution DVD (Sexy Intellectual) [SIDVD541] $17.75
This DVD reviews the career and music of KRAFTWERK, from their inception in the late 1960s (as pre-Kraftwerk ensemble ORGANIZATION), through their most celebrated period in the mid 1970s, and culminating with their resurgence during the 1980s with the popularity of synth-pop and techno. The film further explores how Kraftwerk both fitted in and pulled away from the electronic wing of what is often lazily referred to as 'Krautrock'. Sparing time also for many of the groups' contemporaries from the same field, and tracing the unfolding of electronics in German contemporary music generally, this program presents a fascinating story previously untold on film. It features rarely seen live and performance footage of Kraftwerk and of other Electronic and 'Krautrock' bands-much from private collections, rare photographs of Kraftwerk and others, exclusive and extensive Interviews with ex-Kraftwerk members and other German ambient and electronic musicians, contributions and enlightenment from German academics, writers and journalists, live and studio recordings of many of Kraftwerk's pivotal tracks, plus live and studio recordings of many other bands form the 'Krautrock' movement.

Osman Arabi - Burning Sigils CD (Fractured Spaces) [09874] $18.25
The third release on FracturedSpacesRecords is Osman Arabi's "Burning Sigils", a single 38-minute track of deeply hypnotic ethno-ambience tinged with a cold darkness; a forgotten text written in the blood of generations, a story of long-buried secrets and civilisations that worshipped dark gods in the hidden kingdoms, lost to time and memory, becoming covered by both sand and the unforgiving ravages of time. This languid and hip-swayingly sinister piece builds slowly, unfolding its narrative unhurriedly, in the same way that the ages-old deserts themselves have been around forever, in the process resurrecting the shades of aeons-dead peoples and blowing cold winds across the heat-ridden sandy wastes. Delve with us into the black heart of a now-vanished civilisation and visit the incense-filled temples of the gods of the arid places.

Aids Wolf - Cities Of Glass CD (Skin Graft) [GR91] $13.25
Produced by WEASEL WALTER (Flying Luttenbachers, XBXRX, Arab on Radar), Cities of Glass is the second album from the most hated band in the world! Just votes short of being banned from Canadian radio, and prevented from entering the USA numerous times, AIDS WOLF are globally confounding and universally profound. With Cities of Glass, AIDS Wolf return to what they do best: embracing the hate and bumming out the masses. Packaged in swank gatefold sleeves. "There is a distinct discipline at work here, a crafted sense of composition that unexpectedly rears out of the sonic wreckage"-The Wire

Aliens - Head First CD (Misc Music) [MISL010] $11.75
After a string of successful single releases ALIENS release their first album, Head First. The album represents the culmination of more than a year of recording and mixing at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis. Aliens is the musical entity created by BLAKE SANDBERG, featuring Blake on guitars and vocals with drummer RAANEN BOZZIO. Head First brings together musicians and talent from around the world including guest drummers TAMAKI UI from Japan, Raanen Bozzio, son of Frank Zappa's drummer Terry Bozzio, and even Iggy Pop and David Bowie drummer, HUNT SALES. The bulk of the album was recorded in Austin with engineer MARK YOUNGER-SMITH. The Head First album proves that Aliens are not afraid, and not afraid to rock! Head First is an expansive album with each song adding a different sound or mood and feeling. Each song is simple, stripped down, but each unique. The songs are direct and catchy. These are songs you will remember the next day.

Angela Desveaux - Mighty Ship CD (Thrill Jockey) [THRILL203] $14.00
The follow up release to Montreal country chanteuse ANGELA DESVEAUX's 2006's Wandering Eyes album. Joined by her road-tested band THE MIGHTY SHIP, Desveaux tells stories of strength in the face of adversity, including the story of her grandmother on the album's title track, a young girl struggling to define herself on "For Design," and her own self-affirmation on "Red Alert." The songs are decorated with her beloved country flavors of pedal steel, piano and viola, but new to the mix are flourishes of horns, and a bolder interaction between rhythm and lead guitar. Also striking are Angela's vocal harmonies with FEUERSTACK, whose voice is familiar to many from his Juno Award-winning work in WOODEN STARS.

ANTIchildLEAGUE - The Father CD (Hagshadow) [09870] $15.50
ANTIchildLEAGUE AKA Gaya Donadio The premier promoter of Noise- Industrial and Neo-Folk in London via Hinoeuma the Malediction for more than the last decade. Bart Davenport - Palaces CD (Antenna Farm) [ANT526] $11.75
After years as a pillar of the Bay Area scene, BART DAVENPORT is ready to break out into the national conscience. After his self-described "studio side project" HONEYCUT exploded with their album The Day I Turned to Glass, Davenport's soulful singing and ear for amazing melodies are reaching their biggest audience yet with his fourth solo album, Palaces. On Palaces, Davenport's singing is rich, deep and nuanced, while his lyrics sparkle with plainspoken poetry that offers telling insights into the minds and hearts of his subjects. The classic songs of artists like Arthur Lee, Emitt Rhodes, Harry Nilsson, and Paul McCartney are touchstones. The album balances a sunny vibe with a streak of melancholy and subtly echoes the sound of yesterday's AM radio hits while offering its own bright vision of future pop. Produced by Davenport with more than a little help from his friend KELLEY STOLTZ and features stellar contributions from some of the San Francisco Bay Area's top musicians, including Stoltz, ANGELINA MOYSOV (PERSEPHONE'S BEES), TONY SEVENER, and HERVE SALTERS (Honeycut).

Betty Botox - Mmm, Betty! CD (Endless Flight) [EF002CD] $15.25
Betty Botox is the re-edit project of JD Twitch of Optimo, and this is his first full-length release. Inspired by his sets with JG Wilkes at Glasgow's Sub Club, Mmm, Betty! compiles hard-to-find proto-"classics" of nu-disco, dub, Kraut, industrial, and electronic. This release starts off with The Jellies, and their track "Jive Baby On A Saturday Night," which is a slanted, bouncy bass-driven and handclap number that is virtually impossible to find anywhere else but here. Next is the Love Of Life Orchestra -- after James Murphy used the original version to begin his own mix CD, many people looked for this record, but the original 12" is mega-rare. This Betty Botox version is mixed with another song, "Don't Don't" from the same 12". A very funny but very interesting re-edit. There's a track by The Residents -- their music is always amusing and difficult to understand. However, after you listen to this re-edit, you will know why JD Twitch picked this song -- it's like an original song by Optimo! Severed Heads are early Australian progenitors of avant garde/industrial from the late '70s, and Pankow are pioneers of EBM/industrial in Italy. Their edited track "Girls And Boys" was taken from their first album produced by Adrian Sherwood. Carlos Peron was a member of '80s Swiss electronic/synth-pop band Yello, and "Et" was taken from a mega-rare limited 12", Frigorex. The UK's Hawkwind are one of the most popular and nameable space-rock bands in the world. Their music has been used on mix CDs by disco dub artists such as Prins Thomas, and the track presented and edited here is a whirling, cosmic, guitar and synth-driven maelstrom. Flying Rhythms is a very well-known jam band in Japan and their track is transformed into a no/disco shaker, driven by bongos. Zed is the project of Bernard Szajner, a progressive/industrial/electronic rock pioneer and inventor of the Laser Harp. His two albums Visions Of Dune and Some Deaths Take Forever have been described by Carl Craig as his all-time favorite electronic records. "Framen" is taken from Visions Of Dune and has been edited by Naum Gabo (Jonnie Wilkes of Optimo). Betty Botox is bound to leave you spaced-out, musically schooled and transformed.

Beyond Things - Our Call Outs CD (Plan-It-X) [PIX076] $9.00
Featuring members of the oldest Plan-It-X band, THE TED DANCIN' MACHINE and Hannah Jones of GHOST MICE, this album is hard to define sound wise. Spooky melodies, acoustic instruments, drums and violin. Three of the members were also in Bloomington's best indy/art band, THE PANOPLY ACADEMY GLEE CLUB (on Secretly Canadian Records).

Boston Spaceships - Brown Submarine CD (GBV Inc) [GBVI03] $13.25
Though one will notice some subtle prog flourishes and acoustic strums, Brown Submarines is a pop punk album, made by and for kids who've worn out the grooves on their Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, Wire, and dBs records. While ROBERT POLLARD has stretched out post-GBV, experimenting on each of his diverse and unique solo records, BOSTON SPACESHIPS rock hard, have fun, and drink Miller Lite. Without undue hyperbole, Pollard is penning fantastic pop songs in a style no longer fashionable-perhaps never fashionable. Makes no difference; on Brown Submarine, Pollard's charged up and sings his ass off. He was so enthusiastic about this album that he's decided to play his first proper club tour in two years. This from a guy who hates flying, goes bananas sitting in the van, and has turned down tours with Radiohead and The Strokes. Give Brown Submarine a spin or two-it'll make you feel like a kid again, too. Features former members of GBV, TAKEOVERS, DECEMBERISTS, JICKS, etc.

Bound Stems - Family Afloat CD (Flameshovel) [DIG044] $13.25
Feels like high stakes these days, doesn't it? BOUND STEMS' version of this feeling is called The Family Afloat. It collects the time spent since the release of their last album, 2006's Appreciation Night, and refracts it through dozens of characters, viewpoints, voices, instruments and sounds. The Family Afloat expresses a crucial personal transition and a collective one. While Bound Stems quit their day-jobs to tour relentlessly throughout 2006 in support of Appreciation Night (an album that garnered praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Alternative Press, URB and Chicago Tribune), the band returned home ready for new challenges, and made the communal decision to return to the more stable life of work weeks and strong roots. It was a choice that also ultimately made the concept of home central to The Family Afloat. The songs sound like preparation: the family has grown now, to include new ones being formed in Chicago. But there's no settling down in these songs: family life is raw and confusing, as uncomfortable and unexpected and rewarding as crucial.

Calexico - Carried To Dust CD (Quarterstick) [QS108] $13.75
For Carried To Dust, CALEXICO called on a rotating cast of musicians and friends to help them create what is arguably their most varied and strongest work to date. Carried To Dust is a shining example of the band's commitment to constantly molting and redefining who they are and also reflects the band's amazing live shows, as well as underscoring their restraint and beauty.

Callers - Fortune CD (Western Vinyl) [WV052] $13.25
"Throughout their debut Fortune SARA LUCAS' voice and RYAN SEATON's guitar are seamlessly interwoven, creating a haunting and soulful kind of magic. With the wounded perseverance of Karen Carpenter and the vulnerable, tough-as-nails courage and acceptance of Heart's Ann Wilson, Sara Lucas' voice is rich and unforgettable. Seaton's guitar work is equally engaging, using beautiful unusual chords, gritty distortion, and intricate flourishes."

Charlie Louvin - Steps To Heaven CD (Tompkins Square) [TSQ2059CD] $12.75
"Features 10 traditional gospel classics including 2 Louvin Brothers songs. The release will be followed by Charlie Louvin Sings Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs. Both albums were produced, recorded and mixed by Mark Nevers (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Andrew Bird, Bobby Bare Sr.). Instead of hanging back at age 81, Charlie has instead chosen to challenge himself. Steps To Heaven was recorded live with a gospel choir comprised of three sisters, journeyman gospel pianist Derrick Lee, and Chris Scruggs, adding doghouse bass and electric guitar. Louvin had never recorded with black gospel musicians before, and in doing so discovered a new musical path. Charlie remarks, 'I did things on the gospel record I had no idea I could do. I'd be thinking along the way, 'How can I do things I've never done before?' And I did it.' 2007 saw Louvin celebrate his 80th birthday amidst a swirl of activity around the release of his first studio album in ten years, Charlie Louvin. Grammy-nominated for 'Best Traditional Folk Album,' the disc features George Jones, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham, and Elvis Costello, among others. Charlie toured and recorded with Lucinda Williams, made a video for the song 'Ira,' released a field recording of one of his many in-store performances, Live at Shake It Records, played over 100 concert dates sharing stages with Ryan Adams and Neko Case, appeared on giant festivals like Bonnaroo and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and placed a medallion around Emmylou Harris' neck inducting her into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Charlie's self-titled album earned 4 out of 5 stars in Uncut and MOJO magazines, and sparked a bevy of great press and renewed interest in his fascinating career."

Conifer - Crown Fire CD (Important) [IMPREC209] $13.00
Though Conifer has received quite a bit of critical praise they've somehow managed to live off the grid for the past six years. With Crown Fire Conifer is finally getting the exposure they deserve. Mixing post-rock, kraut-rock, metal and pschychedlia they have created this relentlessly driving and hypnotic masterpiece. Crown Fire's only vocals are from Oxbow's Eugene Robinson fronting the albums final 13 minute epic. LP version limited to 500 copies with 200 on color vinyl. Conifer has been writing primarily instrumental music with a lawless take on the styles from which they've taken cue. New content is found by way of augmenting brutality and suspense with time. Conifer seems to reckon with the notions of bands like Enemymine, Mogwai, or Grails while taking an approach toward their music that's entirely meditative (as opposed to premeditated). Minimal, ethereal passages are narcotically lengthened and crescendos of distortion are sustained well beyond the boundaries adhered to by many of their peers. "Heavy" by way of being beat/repetition heavy in not only a Shellac/Helmet sense but in a way that is practically reminiscent of electronic discipline. Crushing riffs amidst the most ethereal, minimal moments. Six years in, Conifer has emerged from their mind forest into the clearing that is the future and past. Band members have come and gone and come again. Crown Fire is the latest battle that Conifer has fought in the war of obtuse movement. Welcoming dense riffage washes over the listener for the first half of the record, referencing pan Asian themes and musical manifest destiny. The bombast that is their live show comes through loud and clear, intertwined with moments of delicate reflection. Without warning it all goes wrong, the mainframe explodes, the ships crash, the tide of despair and denial rises never to recede. Hailing from the capital of the heavy state of Maine, Conifer has an extremely close relationship with fellow travellers Ocean. These two groups have shared a lot over the years including members, tour transportation, practice spaces and members of the two groups grew up together in rural costal towns. Though different in sound they're quite kindred in spirit and obviously Conifer is essential for anyone who loved Ocean's Here Where Nothing Grows.

Damien Jurado - Caught In The Trees CD (Secretly Canadian) [SC175] $13.25
DAMIEN JURADO just keeps plugging away, creating some of the best folky, singer-songwriter music out there right now, even as acts that mine a similar sound, like Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver, attract more blog buzz. Plenty of input on Caught in the Trees came from Jurado's longtime tour backers, JENNA CONRAD and ERIC FISHER. Jurado took a year to craft the album, the longest he's ever worked on one LP. Some of the songs here ramp up to a rocking level Jurado hasn't been at since his 2002 album I Break Chairs, which he recorded with the backing band Gathered in Song. Production assistance came from CASEY FOUBERT, who has played in Pedro the Lion, Seldom, and Crystal Skulls.

Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip - Angles CD (Strange Famous) [SFR020] $13.25
No description available at this time.

Dave Aju - Open Wide CD (Circus Company) [CCi005CD] $16.00
This is San Francisco producer Dave Aju's debut full-length release, including a bonus remix by Luciano. After three amazing EPs on Circus Company, including the underground hit "Be Like The Sun," he has really outdone himself this time with his most conceptual and personal, yet accessible work to date. The album was made entirely with sounds from his mouth, but it's no novelty affair -- these are all wonderful pieces of music, covering a variety of styles. "Roundabout" starts things off with fat, shuffling drums, an infectious bass line, and a vocal refrain that builds into a "horn-section" crescendo -- straight from Chicago via Aju's mouth. "Bump" is a fun and futuristic approach to hip-hop storytelling with a "bumpity-bump" bass. "Crazy Place" is an homage to disco, pop, and wave styles, but Aju's version takes it to the next level -- pulsing LFOs, "live" mouth percussion, and a chorus and breakdown guaranteed to melt hearts and dancefloors worldwide. Next up is "First Love," a super-deep and soulful house track with spoken word connecting Aju's personal music history, referencing song titles up to this moment -- pure class. "Tapatio" shifts back to his raw party side with huge sub-bass, sick bleepy synth hits, and playful vocal cut-ups. The title track follows, bringing a crazy broken reggaeton-style groove, complete with clattering teeth percussion, squeaky funk synth riffs, and a dark and lovely chorus. "Anyway" is Aju's take on an uplifting house music anthem, recalling Lil'Louis with Sun Ra Arkestra vocals. "With You" closes the album on a slow and sweet note, bubbling over with smooth synths, warm bass, and some of the most tasteful vocoder work around, on a 21st century Roger and Zapp love tip. Open Wide, friends -- Dave Aju has arrived.

De Salvo - Mood Poisoner CD (Rock Action Records) [ROCKACT038CD] $17.75
"Based in Glasgow, Scotland and featuring members of Stretchheads and Idlewild, De Salvo twist the influence of hardcore and metal to demand your total sensual attention. This is incendiary, visceral and genuinely perverse music. Assimilating the sounds of traditional hardcore like Converge, Mastodon and Black Flag with the psychedelic madness of Butthole Surfers, De Salvo have gained a reputation as one of the best live bands in the UK. They are both confrontational and memorable but influence only tells half the story. Put simply De Salvo are not a band it is easy to categorize. Their music is filthy, it's dirty, it's in your face, it leaves you feeling moist, aroused and slightly guilty. Recorded in early 2008 at Chem19 Studios with producer Paul Savage (whose credits include; Mogwai, Arab Strap & Malcolm Middleton) Mood Poisoner emerges as one of the hardcore albums of the year. De Salvo's debut album is a punishing ride for sure but it's an exhilarating experience all the same. F*** the destination, welcome aboard 'cos it's time to strap-in and strap-on to truly experience this."

Dean & Britta - L'avventura CD (Double Feature) [CD-DBL0001] $13.75

Includes four remixed tracks by SONIC BOOM, originally released on the Sonic Souvenirs EP.

Don Chambers and Goat - Zebulon CD (Warm Electronic Recordings) [WRM119] $11.50
"These are adventure songs, instructional and subjective, throw out the map and drive, the joy is in the journey. Moses said the tribe of Zebulon would suck of the abundance of the seas and of treasures hidden in the sand. That's what we are going for here, the pirates dream of buried treasure. Another Zebulon was Zebulon Montgomery Pike Jr., for which the Georgian town and county was named. He was an American soldier and explorer for whom Pikes Peak in Colorado is named. Oddly, he never actually made it to the top of the mountain now famously named after him. These songs came out of travel and adventure, being away from home and coming back. Feeling stuck and feeling like your floating, untethered and strange. Waiting to feel homesick, while you are living in the mercury present."-Don Chambers

Donkeys - Living On The Other Side CD (Dead Oceans) [DOC014] $13.25
THE DOBKEYS are four dudes from San Diego. They like making music together. Sometimes their music is loud, and sometimes it's quiet, but always it is awesome. The Donkeys basically just write ruling songs. Living on the Other Side is about rolling down the windows, cranking up the stereo, and hitting the open road. Maybe you're running away, and maybe you're not, but either way, everything's going to be alright.

Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Primary Colours CD (Goner) [41GONE] $11.00
Goner Records is proud to present the second album from Melbourne, Australia's EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING. Primary Colours was released to rave reviews and sold out shows Down Under, with the first week sales putting the record at number six on the Australian national charts. Eddy says, "musically, to me it sounds a bit more '82ish than the '76ish sound of our first LP, slightly less frantic and maybe a bit more palatable."

Ergs - Hindsight Is 20/20, My Friend CD (Dirtnap) [ZZZ77] $12.25
You don't want to listen to the same type of music all the time, so why would a band want to drone through songs that all sound the same? THE ERS have the talent to play outside the lines. The New Jersey-based trio draws influences from the strongest sections of the SST catalog, pop punk in the vein of both Ramones and Descendents, country, and even jazz. When listening to The Ergs, prepare to have your definition of pop punk challenged. As a band, everything goes; As listeners, everyone wins.

Eric Ayotte - Remnants Of Storytown CD (Plan-I-X) [PIX075] $9.00
At last ERIC AYOTTE has released an album of the songs he has been touring with for the last few years. If you have ever seen him play a show you will recognize the hits on this indie-acoustic full-length. Eric is also the singer of another Plan-It-X band, HALO FAUNA.

Expo 70 - Animism CD (Kill Shaman) [CDEXPOANIM] $12.00
NOW AVAILABLE!!! EXPO 70's 2007 Animism album is the form of a living being, driving deep, dark drones that resonate in the embodiment of life. Animism is a collection of improvisations made mostly out of heavily effected guitar, recorded and performed by JUSTIN WRIGHT.

Format:B - Steam Circuit CD (Highgrade) [HIGH054CD] $16.00
This is the first full-length release by Berlin's Format:B. Steam Circuit comes with a lot of pressure and fun, but by all means is so much more than just a load of hot air. Franziskus Sell and Jakob Hildenbrand always stand out on the Highgrade label with their highly energetic tracks, which are strongly club-oriented without losing musical sense, funkiness or the joy of playing around. Their EP releases Like A Techmachine or the extremely successful Bronson Road are little milestones in Highgrade's label history. Steam Circuit presents new work, plus some of their most successful tracks so far, presented in the form of a DJ mix that demonstrates their whole spectrum: from the dark, bouncing "Edding 850" to trips into more acid-like areas with "Boot Cut" or the easy-rollin' stuff like "Like A Techmachine." When vocals are in the game, Format:B goes one step further "Si Pero No" has the clear potential to hit the scene like Pier Bucci's "Hay Consuelo" did. In cooperation with Jake The Rapper on "Something Suitable," they combine their trademark sub-bass lines with hypnotic sounds and deliver in combination with Jake's vocals the perfect instant-club-banger. All in all, it's a wild ride on the zeitgeist of club sound -- powerful tracks which seem to never lose their breath.

Gaslight Anthem - Sen Or And The Queen CDEP (Sabot Productions) [ACT021] $8.25
FEATURED THIS WEEK ON NPR!!! In the brief span of two years, New Brunswick, New Jersey's THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM have accomplished more than most bands will in a career's worth of existence. Despite the fact that they only have one full-length to their name (2007's Sink Or Swim), the band have written songs that are dripping with so much authenticity it seems they would take decades of hard living to craft. The four-song EP, Senor and the Queen, recorded during a rare few days off in Austin, Texas, last year, shows the progression the band have made in the last year from literally every waking moment on the road. The result is a collection of songs that are remarkably varied, with the only unifying characteristic being their timelessness and authenticity. Anthemic punkers, upbeat rockers, and even a soulful country-esque ballad.

Gasman - Superlife CD (Planet Mu) [ZIQ208] $13.25
It's been a busy year for Portsmouth's GASMAN, what with playing live and starting his own label, and one can hear the influence of his support tour with The Cardiacs on Superlife, his ninth album. The record is full of beatless electronic lullabies such as "RXG3," which unsettles in all the best ways, and "Helpline," with its distinct sense of the uncanny just around the corner. Opener "Ruter" is a majestic, synth-led carousel of notes where the Blackpool Pier meets '90s trance. It's another winner from The Gasman's trademark "Gaylord" sound. No exports to the UK, Europe, or Australia.

Generic - Torture CD (Fractured Spaces) [09873] $18.25
For its second release, FracturedSpacesRecords couldn't have chosen a better one: Generic's "Torture"¬ù, a long and deeply unsettling journey into the beating black heart, and Antarctic iciness of the collective shattered psyche, of a shattered mankind. Created using "foley tracks" and sound effects (used for both film and television), as well as the occasional guitars, bass, and found sounds, it all combines to produce a haunting, nerve-shredding, ghostly and schizophrenic soundtrack, guaranteed to simultaneously freeze the heart and mind, and induce cold sweat to bead the forehead and shivers to wrack the body. Six mid to long tracks of bleak mindscapes totalling just over 50 minutes and wrapped in beautiful full colour digipak with artwork by new German digital artist THAMUS.

Giant Sand - Provisions CD (Yep Roc) [YEP2188] $14.50
"GIANT SAND is a mood," says HOWE GELB. The creative force behind the extended family that has comprised Giant Sand over the years speaks of happy accidents and musical auras that arise to inspire the soundscape that is Giant Sand. The musical family tree of the Tucson, AZ group is long and illustrious, spawning bands like Calexico and The Friends of Dean Martinez. Gelb has steadily amassed a prolific catalog of Giant Sand and solo material that spans the wealth of southwestern roots and lo-fi. Giant Sand's new album proVISIONS is cinematic Americana at its most aching, an album of tremolo soaked guitars, moody piano and secrets whispered over desert winds. Recorded partly in Tucson and Denmark, this version of Giant Sand is comprised of Danish musicians and features talented friends/collaborators such as NEKO CASE, M. WARD and ISOBELL CAMPBELL. A creeping cruise down a dark desert highway, these proVISIONS provide for the furthering ride of Giant Sand's completely unique musical legacy.

Girls - Yes No Yes No Yes No CD (Dirtnap) [ZZZ76] $12.25
Seattle's THE GIRLS play brisk, well-constructed synth-punk that splits the difference between the hookiness of British new wave, the slick professionalism of the Cars, and the weirder strains of synth-punk. Ten tracks of twitchy, keyboard driven poppy post punk.

Git Some - Cosmic Rock CD (1-2-3-4 Go) [GO32] $12.00
GIT SOME is a band from Denver, Colorado consisting of four dudes (including CHUCK and NEIL from PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS) who grew up on 80's punk rock, Reagan-era America, and shitty weed, discharging cathartic bursts of noise that shatter angst and inhibitions. Cosmic Rock was born of wild abandon, loud-ass guitar, bass and drums, and an explosive singer. It's all the good things about hardcore stripped of the agenda, all the great things about metal and hard rock stripped of the unnecessary machismo. Vinyl comes in a full color gatefold sleeve and includes a coupon for a one-time download of high quality MP3's of the entire album! First pressing is limited to 500 copies on red vinyl.

Hacienda - Loud Is The Night CD (Alive) [ALIVE0089] $14.00
San Antonio's HACIENDA are Mexican-Americans who are obsessed with the Beach Boys, and the buzz surrounding the band may signal a rebirth of young rock'n'roll-with emphasis on the roll. Formed by cousins ABRAHAM VILLANUEVA (piano/vocals) and DANTE SCHWEBEL (guitar/vocals), together with Abraham's brothers JAIME (drums/vocals) and RENE (bass/vocals), this Mexican-American quartet blends a raw yet sophisticated style of pop music with harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles and Beach Boys.

Home & Garden - Domesticated CD (Om) [OM298] $14.00
RELEASE DATE: 09-23-2008
***When writing, composing and performing the music on their debut album Domesticated, TIM KVASNOSKY and TIMOTHY SHUMAKER (collectively known as HOME & GARDEN) knew it would be very close to their hearts. Their work behind the scenes (as studio composers, musicians) for other dance artists have garnered numerous #1 Billboard dance hits. Some of these notable artists that have worked with the Home & Garden hit machine include: LUCY WOODWARD, COLETTE, ESTHERO, and DEBI NOVA. It only seemed fit that they bring in a few of these accomplices and others to contribute to their album such as DERRICK CARTER, MIC MURPHY, LISA SHAW, JENNIFER KARR and CHEZ DAMIER.

Horse Feathers - House With No Home CD (Kill Rock Stars) [KRS495] $13.25
Born and raised in Lewiston, Idaho, JUSTIN RINGLE has a natural affinity with the West. Its space, beauty, and nonconformity seem to be reflected in the music of his band HORSE FEATHERS, named after an expression he heard his grandfather use. In Ringle's hands, the common meaning of this expression comes to life: two things that can't possibly exist together are spun into a gossamer delicacy of music shot through with lyrical weight. Moving from Idaho to Portland, Oregon in 2004, Justin recorded some demos, one of which found its way to PETER BRODERICK (Norfolk & Western, Dolorean, and Loch Lomond), who offered to help record them properly. Later Peter's sister HEATHER BRODERICK joined the band on cello and backing vocals. Justin and Peter worked together to polish the material that became the group's first album, Words Are Dead, which was released on the local Lucky Madison label in 2006. After a year of touring the US in various incarnations, Horse Feathers signed to Kill Rock Stars and proceeded to record this, their second album. On it they have distilled their sound into a brilliant statement of minimalist Americana. Peter and Heather's precisely arranged strings step cautiously in and around Justin's haunting vocal lines, and the economy of music is also reflected in the lyrics-a few evocative phrases tell rich stories, each word weighted and delivered with careful purpose.

Howling Hex - Earth Junk CD (Drag City) [DC372] $13.25
RELEASE DATE: 09-23-2008
***The sixth new version of NEIL MICHAEL HAGERTY's (ROYAL TRUX) HOWLING HEX. Keplers Odd - Strena Seu de Nive Sexangula CD (Fractured Spaces) [09872] $18.25
From the darkest and coldest heart of Sweden comes the trio known as Keplers Odd, and FracturedSpacesRecords is pleased to announce that "Strena Seu de Nive Sexangula", their third CD album, is the first official release on the UK's newest quality underground music label. Featuring seven tracks of noisy yet subtly ambient guitar-driven sonic attacks, eerily redolent of the icy cold mysterious aurora-wrapped landscapes prevalent throughout Northern Europe, inhabited by creatures and monsters spawned from the myths & legends told around campfires over countless generations. Indeed, Keplers Odd have themselves spawned a monster of an album, creating textures and ambiences far beyond the normal run of over-driven guitar noisefests - yes, there is unalloyed power here, but there is also quiet subtlety, sinister atmospherics, and deeply dark occult moods. Ancient abandoned buildings, dark musty corridors, sinister forces at play - it's all here in stonking quantities!!

Kimya Dawson - Alphabutt LP (K Records) [KLP193] $13.25
A new album of children's music from "Juno-ized" folk star KIMYA DAWSON. Song titles include "The Alphabutt Song," "Seven Hungry Tigers," "Little Monster Babies," "Wiggle My Tooth" and "Pee Pee in the Potty," and collaborators include former Third Eye Blind guitarist Kevin Cadogan and a number of Dawson's other musical friends and their children. She has also been invited to participate in the Sesame Street television program.[3]

Klangmutationen - Schwarshagel CD (Utech Records) [UR019CD] $15.25
"Klangmutationen are a mystery. More could be said about what their music isn't than what it is. Hailing from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the underground experimentalists pierce the veils of Eastern and Western music. Recalling early sets on FMP as well as the Takayanagi/Abe axis of Japanese free music, Schwarzhagel is the sound of a spirit falling past its own life after death, forever."

Klangwart - Stadtlandfluss CD (Staubgold) [STAUB080CD] $16.00
After an eight year long studio hiatus, the Cologne- and Berlin-based electronic duo Klangwart (Markus Detmer and Timo Reuber) present Stadtlandfluss. Since 1999, Klangwart have been experimenting at their concerts with a limited pool of sounds and loops (developed and compiled by Timo). From this, the two generated the concert piece Stadtlandfluss in real-time, which they have been (re-)creating as a continuous experiment for many years. Thus, Stadtlandfluss is a "work in progress." Little of what's happening within the piece is determined. Dynamics range from "very quiet" (minimal, subtle, harmonious, finely-honed) to "extremely loud" (harsh, raw, pure energy). The piece is in a state of permanent flux, it changes from performance to performance depending on the acoustics of the place and the physical and mental state of Klangwart and the audience. No two concerts sound the same. With this piece, Klangwart allowed themselves the luxury of a long gestation. In 2007, Markus and Timo decided to capture the piece in their Cologne-based Inkiek-Studio and release it on an album of the same title. Although the music is split into seven tracks, it is still one continuous piece. Droning soundscapes mixed with restless electronics that envigorate the very act of listening.

Little Teeth - Child Bearing Man CD (Absolutely Kosher) [AK074] $12.75
Can a band be simultaneoulsy punk as it is folk? It would seem a contradiction in terms. If you think not, San Francisco's LITTLE TEETH will prove you wrong. The group, renowned for their energetic, often spastic live performances, equip themselves with instruments a plenty - everything from a banjo to the kitchen pot - yet bring little sense of self consciousness. Child Bearing Man is the kind of debut album you yearn for and recognize instantly once you find it. It's a record of growls, squeaks, complex wordplay, and melodic cascades, tied together with mandolin, banjo, accordion, rock and roll drums, cello, guitar and DANNIE MURRAY's (Vocals, Mandolin, Guitar, Accordion) wildcat snarl. Amazingly, out of a semblance of chaos comes harmony and raw beauty. Dannie's voice draws you in. It is a little scary, full of pain and world weariness. But what is most mesmerizing about this trio, rounded out by AMMO EISU (Vocals, Drums, Cello, Violin) and ANDY TISDALL (Vocals, Bass, Banjo, Electronics), is their transcendent synergy on stage. These three natural eccentrics lead the listener through tracks like "Japanese Candy" with desperate wails and "Between My Ears" with lyrical jabs, "you could cut your face six different ways but they'd all look the same to me". Together, Little Teeth's Child Bearing Man is commanding, emotionally and musically conflicted, utterly moving and shockingly original.

Liz Durrett - Outside Our Gates CD (Warm Electronic Recordings) [WRM120] $12.50
Produced and arranged by indie rock icon, ERIC BACHMANN (ARCHERS OF LOAD, FROOKED FINGERS, AZURE RAY), Outside Our Gates, represents a sonic leap forward for LIZ DURRETT. With Bachmann on board, Durrett's once spare, acoustic downbeats have been supplanted by a more textured and diverse orchestra of sounds. A virtual cacophony of instruments are here, including (but not limited to) tiny nylon-string guitars, backwards electric feedback loops, pizzicato violins, plucky cellos, upright bass, Wurlitzers, accordions, grand space pianos and marching drums. Bachmann's score somehow harmonizes these elements seamlessly to provide the perfect setting for Durrett's near dream-state writings and softly unsettling voice. Additional performances by VIC CHESNUTT, BIRAN CAUSEY (MAN OR ASTRO-MAN?), AMANDA KAPOUSOUZ (TIN CUP PHROPHETTE) and members of HAM1.

Low Lows - Shining Violence CD (Misra) [MSR049] $12.75
THE LOW LOWS (ex-PARLER & LILY) follow up their majestic 2006 debut album, Fire On The Bright Sky, with Shining Violence, an album of leaner, more hook-laden songs, which combines slow, dreamlike balladry with melodically distorted guitar, smashing, trashy drums, pedal steel, three-part vocal harmony and gospel-tinged, explosive climaxes. Highlights include a rousingly twangy cover of The Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Modern Romance" and "Five Ways I Didn't Die," which was a hugely popular radio session track last year ("absolutely beautiful... one of my favorite sessions of the year. Marvelous."- Mark Coles, 'The Beat', BBC Radio).

Magazine - Play CD (Virgin) [EMI87347CD] $11.50
"Formed by original Buzzcocks lead singer Howard Devoto, Magazine featured a line-up that included Robin Simon of Ultravox, and Barry Adamson, who became a key member of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds before launching a critically praised solo career. Magazine's combination of punk rock's nervous energy and art rock's experimentalism pushed the boundaries of music. Little wonder that this top post-punk group has been cited by today's top post-rock group, Radiohead, as an influence, with Radiohead even paying tribute by performing Magazine's 'Shot By Both Sides' during their Kid A live shows. But Magazine's influence doesn't stop there. It also includes fans like U2's The Edge, Blur, Maxïmo Park, Manus, Manic Street Preachers, Elastica, Morrissey (who covered 'A Song From Under The Floorboards'), and both Ministry and Peter Murphy who each covered 'The Light Pours Out Of Me.' Play is the only live document ever released by this legendary band. Recorded in Melbourne in 1980, it is a veritable live hits collection that also includes tasty extras such as their broodingly sinister cover version of the Sly & The Family Stone classic 'Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).'"

Mariola Brillowska & Felix Kubin - H.O.N.D. CD (A-musik) [A033CD] $14.50
"The first joint release of Hamburg-based all-around artists Felix Kubin (music, sounds) and Mariola Brillowska (lyrics, vocals). For Brillowska's 2006 theatre play of the same title, Kubin composed a soundtrack in order to mess up this infamous musical by twirling colorful little building bricks around in it. This then became an album in its own right, where constructivist orchestra- and plunderphonics-collages meet Gameboy-disco while melancholy-laden chansons rub against Weill/Eisler-like hymns."

Michael Byron - Dreamers Of Pearl CD (New World Records) [NW80679CD] $14.50
Performed by Joseph Kubera, piano. If youâ?Tve ever been to a strip club with Willie Winant, you must buy this CD! "Michael Byron (b. 1953) was a pupil of James Tenney, and later, of Richard Teitelbaum. The body of music he has composed over the past thirty years has been harmonically rich, rhythmically detailed, and increasingly virtuosic. Dreamers Of Pearl (2004-2005) evinces a sensitivity for the sound of the piano, a sensibility of extended playing/listening, and an interest in repetition and change through gradual and seemingly clandestine processes that transform and extend what we hear. Despite the lyrical (and, one might assume, programmatic) titles of the three movements ('Enchanting the Stars,' 'A Bird Revealing the Unknown to the Stars,' 'It Is the Night and Dawn of Constellations Irradiated'), Dreamers Of Pearl is a self-contained piece of pure ('absolute') music without obvious quotation or extra-musical references. Dreamers makes its case within a classically-balanced architectural design: three extended 'fast-slow-fast' movements of roughly equal length (263, 199, and 226 measures, respectively). The notation is meticulous, specific, precise. Much of the work's texture could be characterized as baroque, given the perpetual motion of the consistent two-voiced polyphonic layering -- some of it cryptically and distortedly imitative. Dreamers belongs to a rare class of recent piano music --monumental compositions of great length, beauty, and depth -- all self-consciously bound to tradition-oriented genres and their deeply ingrained structures, yet inventive and thrilling in ways that inspire a few brave pianists to dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to these often mercilessly difficult pieces. Joseph Kubera, the tremendously gifted pianist for whom Dreamers Of Pearl was written, is one of those brave few."

Michna - Magic Monday CD (Ghostly International) [GI73] $10.75
RELEASE DATE: 09-23-2008
***NYC producer MICHNA (SFC, Bonde Do Role, Diplo) comes correct with skullsnap bets and playful electronics by the pound. "With each song, Michna pumps city grit into the watery graves of mixtapes past. Post-bass, ambient, whispers of acid jazz, it's all there. Magic Monday is an international biopic, but one that is both timeless and genreless."-Fader

Milosh - III CD (Plug Research) [PLG89] $10.75
RELEASE DATE: 09-23-2008
***MILOSH (Toronto, Canada) makes music for the mind, body and spirit. Introspective, intimate, sensual electro-folk steeped in perfumed melancholy and luscious romance. Combining beats, samples, guitars, strings and the most silken falsetto voice since prime-time Smokey Robinson, the third Milosh album III takes the listener on an emotional journey through an exquisitely beautiful musical landscape. A classically trained cellist, jazz aficionado, Neil Young fan and devotee of left-field electronica, the Toronto-based MICHAEL MILOSH does not fit conventional pop categories-and nor does his music.

Mirror Mirror - Society For The Advancement Of Inflammatory Consciousness CD (Cochon) [COCH032] $13.00
Brooklyn-based MIRROR MIRROR's first full-length album is a schizophrenic exploration into the multiple personalities and points of views of the (fictional?) Society, as well as aspiring followers, runaways, hustlers, partygoers, and music producers. The compositions are lush and complex, blending folky sing-alongs, sinister rock songs, cult lullabies, robotic choral pieces, and meditative interludes. Mirror Mirror has earned a reputation for its curious blend of music and performance, as well as its polymorphous membership. Chief songwriters DAVID RILEY and RYAN LUCERO met in 2003 and quickly recruited percussionist MATT BAGDANOFF, guitarist JILL KAUFMAN, and a rotating cast of friends, performers and guest musicians. Their unpredictable live shows incorporate theater, visual art, video, design, and even food.

Momus - Joemus CD (American Patchwork) [AMPATCH08] $12.25
RELEASE DATE: 11-17-2008
The new Momus album, Joemus, is a collaboration between the veteran electronic vaudevillian and Joe Howe, a young Glasgow breakcore musician known for his work with Gay Against You and Germlin. Asked, back in 2007, to do a cover version for a limited edition box set called Recovery, Momus called on the young Scot's services to make a cover of David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes, which turned out "not so much a pop song as a ping pong match between Coco the Clown and Major Tom... a series of satistfying thwack and plock and boiiiiiing noises," according to Momus. The Bowie cover isn't on Joemus, but the Nintendo Glam Rock feel -- and the odd noises -- persist. The pair worked over the internet, then spent several weeks together in Berlin fine-tuning the results. The Joemus album sounds like the hits of 70s Scottish glam rock sensations The Bay City Rollers played on 80s amusement arcade equipment. Joe's frenetic, ADD-addled jams get turned by Momus into folk jigs, but the fast numbers alternate with tenderly morose slowies, covers of Cliff Richard ballads and Ryuichi Sakamoto croons. Then it's back to the beats-and-edits frenzy, and tales of horror, from Dracula (a duet with Groopie Kyoka Kyoka) to Ichabod Crane. The result may be the most satisfying pop album Momus has ever made -- but only if your definition of pop tends to the edgy, jumpy, fresh, and weird.

Nadja - Trembled CD (Utech Records) [UR024CD] $15.25
"Trembled has returned, triumphantly. Released by Utech Records [046] in the summer of 2006 on limited CD-R. The principal live recordings from Toronto have been remixed/remastered and include a rare performance of Swans 'No Cure for the Lonely.' The core of the release, though, is 'Tremble,' a cascading improvisation of drift and atmospherics revealed to audiences on an occasional basis. The track is telling of the fluidity with which Nadja create and why the band has become so highly regarded. 'Breakpoint' and 'Corrasion' complete the set. Exclusive material has been added in 'Stays Demons' and a second version of 'Tremble' recorded by Scott Slimm in Philadelphia. Illustration by Justin Bartlett. The ultimate document of Nadja at their most electric and empyreal. Edition of 900."

New Year - New Year CD (Touch And Go) [TG324] $13.75
Over the last seventeen years, in the 1990s with BEDHEAD and for the last decade with THE NEW YEAR, MATT and BUBBA KADANE have done all they could to avoid feeling rushed in making a record. Records need time to be coherent, and coherence-even thin thematic coherence-is what makes records worth more than a mere collection of songs. The most recent payoff of this approach is The New Year's newest self-titled release, the culmination of four years of song-writing and a year of recording. Lyrically, these ten songs address the interlocked themes of lost time, frustrated desire, and the need for others. Although musically these may be the band's most varied songs-for a band that made innovative use of three guitars, almost half the songs here are built around the piano-it is the careful sequence of these songs that brings the story the lyrics tell together. Even the lack of a record title seems deliberate in suggesting that this is the culmination of everything this band has tried to achieve.

Nightmares On Wax - Thought So... CD (Warp) [WRP159] $13.25
The venerable NIGHTMARES ON WAX return with Thought So..., a sun-drenched collection of dub and heavy drums arriving just in time to wrap up summer madness. After paving the way for soul-minded beat-smiths like Madlib and Flying Lotus, this latest LP is another important step in an already iconic career. Buoyant and supremely catchy, Thought So... is another skillful combo of advanced production and vintage groove. In short, the record gives fans everything they have come to expect from Nightmares On Wax.

Okkervil River - Stand Ins CD (Jagjaguwar) [JAG124] $13.25
The band's fifth full-length, The Stand-Ins is another stunner of a record. As the skeletal cover art suggests this new collection of songs connects us to its predecessor while continuing, echoing, and extending the OKKERVIL story.

Parenthetical Girls - Entanglements CD (Tomlab) [TOM120] $14.00
PARENTHETICAL GIRLS' third album and first for Tomlab is an eleven song linear narrative of moral ambiguities, set to an elaborately orchestrated olio of modern classical and timeworn, traditional American pop forms. They borrow from the string swept sentimentality of Van Dyke Parks, Scott Walker, Jack Nitzsche, and Burt Bacharach, then introduce the influence of more formidable strains of modern classical composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Philip Glass, and Gavin Bryars. The result is a confluence of cerebral and sentimental disparities; sensually unsettling. Orchestral pop, crooned and cooed in falsetto.

Pedal - Pedal CD (Staubgold) [STAUB083CD] $16.00
Pedal is comprised of duo improvisations for two pianos by Australians Chris Abrahams (The Necks) and Simon James Phillips. While Abrahams is inspired by jazz, be-bop, hard-bop, free-jazz, rock 'n roll, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, improvisation, Terry Riley, and dare I say... Little Richard, Phillips feels much more at home with the concert hall, opera house, chamber works, Grieg, Janacek, Feldman, Ives, old-school, new-school, classically-trained pianist, conductor, pedagogue. The music: What are they thinking? These guys are doing a recording of acoustic piano music in this day and age?! Just when you think two grand pianos and four hands have nothing to say in this 21st century, you're wrong, because these are two brilliant minds. Every single piece of music on this recording was fully improvised. To borrow a phrase from Ornette Coleman in relation to his view about the state of music in general: "Beauty is a rare thing. Well, here is that rare thing.

Pidgeon - Might As Well Go Eat Worms CD (Absolutely Kosher) [AK059] $12.75
RELEASE DATE: 09-23-2008
***Four years after their From Gutter With Love debut, the San Francisco outfit return from the underground with their sophomore release, Might as Well Go Eat Worms, an album which showcases the bands undeniable maturation in sound. PIDGEON has since perfected upon their loud, quiet, loud signature form, finding balance between beauty and destruction. "California is for F**kers" opens with catchy, rhythmic riffs and precision drumming before giving way to an onslaught of distorted, crunching, sludgy guitars offset with semi-sweet pop vocals. Throughout the record MICHA FOLEY's (former member of Bay Area hardcore legends USED NAKED BLOODY) bone rattling screams are assuaged by VAL IWAMASA's angelic voice (think Ninna Person of The Cardigans meets Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead). On Might As Well Eat Worms Pidgeon has shed all remaining sense of innocence and emerged leaner, stronger, and ready to devour you whole.

Pivot - O Soundtrack My Heart CD (Warp) [WRPCD166] $14.00
PIVOT are an Australian trio made up of DAVE MILLER and brothers RICAHRD and LAURENZ PIKE. If that last name is in any way familiar, it may well be for his membership of pioneering jazz/electronica trio TRIOSK (who broke up last year), though it might also be for his contributions to SAVATH + SAVALAS and FLANGER. O Soundtrack My Heart is Pivot's debut album though it's the result of a lengthy maturation as the band formed back in the late '90s.

Plinth/Textile Ranch - The Rest, I Leave To The Poor CD (Make Mine Music) [MMM051] $16.00
RELEASE DATE: 10-20-2008
A postal collaboration between Plinth (Mike Tanner) and Textile Ranch (Glen Johnson of Piano Magic). This 44 minute piece may structurally resemble a classical composition - divided as it is into several interlocking stanzas - but it's difficult to place it comfortably within the realm of modern music. If anything, 'The Rest....' evokes the otherwordly, fantastical obsessions of the Victorians (Conan Doyle, Lear, Grandville, Wellcome, etc) through means of meticulously manipulated instrumentation, samples and voice. Plinth, of course, is no stranger to Victoriana. In 2007, the Dorset-based multi-instrumentalist and founder of the Dorset Paeans record label released, 'Plays Victorian Machine Music' - an EP made up entirely from sounds generated by antiquated parlor machines and music boxes. A further full-length Plinth album, 'Music For Smalls Lighthouse' will be released on the Current 93-associated, Durtro Jnana label by the end of this year. Tanner has also played as a member of Pantaleimon, Directorsound, United Bible Studies and with Sharron Kraus live. Glen Johnson founded the Anglo-French "ghost-rock" unit, Piano Magic, in 1996 and since then has released over 30 records on a multitude of different labels, from 4AD to Morr Music to Important Records, including collaborations with Low, Vashti Bunyan, Cornershop and Tarwater. In 2004, his debut album as Textile Ranch, 'Bird Heart In Wool,' a portfolio of abstract, melodic electronica, was released on the Very Friendly label. A further Textile Ranch album will see the light of day in Spring 2009. Tanner and Johnson may have met on the internet but their collaboration here relied greatly on Her Majesty's Royal Mail service, swapping files by post, adding, subtracting, remoulding, magnifying found sounds and home recordings. The overall effect could be imagined as the sonic depiction of the life and times of an impoverished Victorian clerk, from birth to death. Clattering typewriter keys are sewn into this rich tapestry amongst the lolloping waves of the grimy Thames, divine voices, rusty acoustic guitars, wheezing harmoniums, boiling kettles, mocking crows, funeral drums, penny arcades and much, much more. Angele David-Guillou, a regular contributor to Piano Magic recordings and chanteuse with her own project, Klima (s/t album on Peacefrog, 2007) generously guests on vocals and other instruments here, whilst the mysterious Ms Autumn Grieve adds further voicings. This one-off collaboration marks the 51st release for Make Mine Music, the pioneering British independent label that is owned, financed and maintained by its artists. A special label compilation and selective concerts around the UK will litter the next few months. 'The Rest, I Leave To The Poor' comes as a strictly ltd edition (1000 copies), letter-pressed sleeve of recycled chipboard with red metallic ink finish.

Quintessence - Indweller CD (Esoteric Recordings) [ECLEC2089CD] $18.50
"Esoteric Recordings add to their recent reissue of Quintessence's first album for RCA Records with this, their final vinyl outing from 1972. Hailing from the heart of London's 'alternative underground' society in Notting Hill, Quintessence were inspired by Eastern philosophy and spiritual teachings creating a unique fusion of psychedelia, jazz and ethnic rock. Indweller saw them continue their musical explorations in this vein, creating a classic of the Progressive / Acid Rock genre. The Esoteric remastered edition was produced from the original analogue master tapes and features a booklet with liner notes and new essay."

Rafter - Sweaty Magic CD (Asthmatic Kitty) [AKR043] $6.50
Inspired by influences as diverse as Guided By Voices, R Stevie Moore, Fela Kuti, Lightning Bolt, Fushitsusha, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, and Cody Chestnutt. "It's all about the overwhelming rad feeling of going out dancing with my hot fiancee-- techno, Prince, electro, hip-hop-- sweating and smiling on the dance floor!" --Rafter Roberts.

Rahim - Laughter CD (Pretty Activity) [PA010] $13.25
RAHIM have always existed with one foot in and one foot out of New York City. While the provinciality of their Long Island roots allowed for a unique musical direction, their proximity and relevance to New York City added an appropriate dose of urbane awareness and ambition. That combination of sound and vision produced their debut, Ideal Lives, to strong critical praise from publications like Pitchfork and Spin and a slew of national touring. Their long-cultivated and irreproducible musical vision is on full display on their second full-length Laughter-a record of tense melodies, expansive synth textures and restless percussive energy that comes off like the soundtrack to urban living on the brink of apocalypse. Received a 7.6 rating in Pitchfork.

Robert Haigh - Written on Water CD (Crouton) [09871] $14.75
In the early 80s, Robert Haigh released a handful of recordings under his own name, as well as the monikers Sema, Fote, and Truth Club. His atmospheric piano, guitar and sound arrangements were in a class of their own, but ranked among the quality level of other experimentalists such as Nurse With Wound, Current 93, and The Hafler Trio; coincidentally with whom he also collaborated with. These recordings quickly developed a cult following and even today are scarce, some fetching high prices on the collector's market.

Haigh departed this work in the 90s, moving into an entirely different sound under the moniker Omni Trio. Signing with the esteemed electronic label Moving Shadow, Haigh became highly regarded as one of the originators of drum and bass music, although his style during this time continued to reflect his use of fluid melody and space.

And now, Crouton is absolutely delighted to present his newest work, Written on Water. Within these songs, listeners will hear nods to the distinct melodicism of his early Valentine Out of Season-era solo piano work, while also referencing like-minded composers such as Eric Satie, Steve Reich, and Harold Budd. Gone are the drum machines of his 90s work, yet this new music is as much about rhythm as it is about melody.

Sascha Funke - Watergate 02 CD (Watergate Records) [WG002CD] $16.00
This is the second Watergate mix CD installment. Situated by the river Spree, known for its first-rate line-ups of international talent and, of course, its famous wall-to-wall LED dancefloor installation, the Watergate Club in Berlin has quickly become one of the world's leading dance music clubs. Only five years after its official opening, the club now goes a step further and releases a mix CD series delivering only the finest DJ mixes by some of club's most exiting residents and guests. With the focus being put not only on the music but also on the packaging and design, this series will quickly become a truly sought-after collector's item and will surely stand out in the flood of mediocre music and mixes that often dilute the market. Sascha Funke is an honest-to-goodness Berliner, and he has played a significant role in molding and forming the Berlin techno scene since the mid-'90s. Now, after various stops along the way, he has found his home and a residency at Watergate. Sascha delivers a mix that is second to none in its musical diversity. At the same time, his personality shines throughout the entire project and reflects his self-perception as a DJ. In addition to current tracks and remixes, the mix is interlaced with carefully-chosen jewels and rarities from years past. The mix was recorded at the Watergate Club on a warm August night, using records of various ages. Any and all cracklings and sounds from the needle touching down come from the use of vinyl records, and are deliberate and desired -- an integral part of the sound of an authentic DJ mix. Including artists such as Nathan Fake, Four Tet, Ellen Allien, Miss Kittin, Maus & Stolle, Zander VT, Minilogue & KAB, Wighnomy Brothers, Dave Aju, Sten, Modal, The Mole, Sascha Funke, Tobias Thomas & Superpitcher, DJ Koze, Closer Musik, Patrice Scott, Milch, and Acid Jesus.

Shaky Hands - Lunglit CD (Kill Rock Stars) [KRS498] $13.25
In their hometown of Portland, Oregon, THE SHAKY HANDS are the one band that virtually everyone agrees on. Respected throughout the underground for their basement show origins and complete lack of ego, critically adored for their instantly recognizable, earthy-meets-explosive sound and loved by the general populace for putting on really, really good shows-they represent Portland, one of America's best music cities, as well as any contemporary indie rock act. NICK DELFFS' vibrato-infused, homespun vocals and bobbing acoustic guitar strums complement COLIN ANDERSON's organic, driving percussion while JEFF LEHMAN's own guitar rockouts remind listeners that The Shaky Hands were, after all, a rock band.

Stargazer's Assistant, The - Shivers And Voids CD (Utech Records) [UR018CD] $15.25
"David J. Smith (Guapo, Miasma & The Carousel Of Dead Horses) releases a second set of recordings as The Stargazer's Assistant. Following The Other Side of the Island on Aurora Borealis, Shivers and Voids is a union of instrument, voice and tape. A soundtrack left waiting for the right film to accompany it through the dark. Sweeping, intricate, sometimes ominous, yet always exuding a warmth of emotion. Ancient forests, vast plains, billowing clouds, rusted metal hulks, wet rock walls, lights flickering in darkness. The Stargazer's Assistant reveals all this to us."

Thomas Lehn/Marcus Schmickler - Navigation im Hypertext CD (A-musik) [A034CD] $14.50
"Lehn and Schmickler 's 1st recording BART is considered one of the best synth improv albums ever made. Since BART, dating back to 2000, the duo has toured frequently through Europe, Japan and the USA.This double-release features some of the best performances the duo recorded over the course of 15 live concerts. A brilliant amalgam of the two musicians' strengths, Navigation im Hypertext utilizes both improvisation and studio post-production techniques to create a lasting work, combining the feel of a classic composed electronic music record with the raw, crackling energy of a free improv-session. Exciting and destabilizing, Navigation im Hypertext will surprise even the most hardcore Lehn fan: intertwined with Schmickler's, his art never sounded this rich. If anything, Navigation im Hypertext takes electronic improvisation one step further. The arrangements range in tone from softer clusters of sound to more abrasive movements. Comes in digipack, CD-only release."

Morning Way by Trader Horne has achieved legendary status alongside other classic examples of the genre such as the album by Mellow Candle (also available on Esoteric). Featuring original Fairport Convention vocalist Judy Dyble and singer-songwriter Jackie McAuley, Morning Way was an early release on Pye Records' progressive imprint Dawn. Although selling limited numbers upon release, the album has acquired mythical status over the years, thanks to the album's masterful compositions and arrangements."

Various Artists - Dark Was The Night CD (Deep Sea) [SEAD8002CD] $16.00
...A Tribute To The Music Of Blind Willie Johnson. Originally released in 2003. Sometimes it seems that the world is filling up with tribute and compilation records, yet the folk tradition reminds us that songs wither and die if they're not performed, and that songs from the past constantly surprise us with their relevance for our contemporary world. Blind Willie Johnson, the great Texas gospel slide guitarist, produced a remarkably intense body of spiritual music. He was born 100 years ago. Before the Great Depression, he recorded many sides for Columbia Records, but by the end of his life, was performing on street corners and at church benefits. This collection of specially-commissioned performances is drawn from a wide variety of the world's finest contemporary roots performers: Jody Stecher & Kate Brislin, Martin Simpson, 3 Mississippistaphas 3, Helen Watson & Heather Greenbank, Julie Murphy & Richard Llewellyn, Mike Seeger & Alexia Smith, The Henrys with Mary Margaret O'Hara, Ginny Clee, Bob Copper & the Latest English Country Blues Band, The Positively Testcard, Peter Stampfel & Gary Lucas, and Mike Cooper. Each musician has taken a piece from Johnson's repertoire and added their own signature interpretation. All profits are being donated to schools and charities working with disadvantaged children.

Various Artists - Cosmic Balearic Beats Vol. 1 CD (Eskimo) [ESK502410] $16.00
The Eskimo label presents the first volume in a series dedicated to cosmic Balearic beats. This trans-global intergalactic funk odyssey starts with Stratus' disco-fied, cowbell ringin'. The duo is comprised of Mat Anthony and Martin Jenkins, respected producers and remixers who have re-worked the music of Serge Gainsbourg, Kylie, Playgroup and Calexico, amongst others. We then hook up with Phoreski aka Neil Dunn who also runs his own Fat Fuk Records while having his disco-cake and eating it as Richard Gateaux. Coyote then get in on the action as veteran DJs Timm Sure and Ampo, right before Solar Disco label-head Maelstrom presents his exclusive cosmic disco vision. Homerun sees the guitar-playing, electronic producer Laurent Grauwels hark to his '80s roots, while Bottin takes it back with his blend of '70s disco, early '80s electro, and horror-disco. Rubber Room (aka Disco Devil label runners Skinny Joey and Ferre) deliver one of the standout tracks on the compilation with the superb Italo-infected "Cockroach" and Massimiliano Pagliara continues the strong Italo influence with his collection of analogue synths and drum machines. Spektrum are one of the more well-known names popping up on this exclusive compilation and here we see DJ Cosmo get to grips with the gorgeous vocal refrain of "Fit Together." Then we have Lullabies In The Dark get their lips around an ice cold, staccato funk-filled number while Igor Skafar aka Ichisan gets his retro-futuristic-space-funk together. Things round off in fine style as the fast-rising duo of Sasha Crnobrnja and Alex Gloor aka In Flagranti present some rolling disco-funk against the stunning, slo-mo, chord-laden funk of Lovelock. Roll down the windows, turn the stereo up and let the cosmic Balearic beats flood in.

Volcano! - Paperwork CD (Leaf) [BAY63] $13.25
Arriving in 2005 with an exclamatory bang, sporting an electrifying live set and an audacious debut album in Beautiful Seizure, VOLCANO! cast an eye over the parameters of rock and exponentially expanded them into unknown regions. After a two-year hiatus, the Chicago trio strides onward with a new bounce in their step, and a new cohesive flow to their songs. Paperwork is leaner and more considered than before; nearly everything begins with simple pop structures which are subsequently torn apart. The ragged, feverish dissonance and bright spaciousness of AARON WITH's guitar has much in common with Deerhoof or Dirty Projectors, but this time, more attention is focused on the beats and rhythms. Lead-off single "Africa Just Wants To Have Fun" displays much of this febrile energy within a razor-sharp satire of certain rock stars who purport to save the world with dubious, self-serving rhetoric. On the self-deprecating "Slow Jam," With's vocals are more deliberate, more soulful than before, with echoes of classic Stevie Wonder surfacing. "Fairy Tale" describes his disillusionment with his experience of the non-profit sector, while "Sweet Tooth" tackles his conscience on the ambiguous issue of consumerism and promoting social and environmental responsibility. No exports outside the US.

Woven Hand - Ten Stones CD (Sounds Familyre) [SF20] $13.25
"Sounds Familyre Records is quite the comfy home for unique musicians. The label was founded by Daniel Smith of Danielson/Danielson Famile fame, and Sufjan Stevens has released music on the imprint. David Eugene Edwards, the musical force at the center of Wovenhand (and formerly 16 Horsepower), shares a lot of traits with Smith and Stevens. His music mines deeply emotional territory that sometimes delves into religious matters, and sounds lush and gorgeous. Ten Stones is made up of, yes, ten songs of such singular-minded musicality."

Yoshie Fruchter - Pitom CD (Tzadik) [TZ8128] $14.50
"Avant-garde rock meets the Jewish tradition in Pitom, a shredding Jewish instrumental band led by Yoshie Fruchter. Born in D.C. and now living in Brooklyn, Yoshie combines influences from Frank Zappa, Sonic Youth and Masada into a rocking band performing catchy, hooky compositions that both pay tribute to and challenge its heritage. Recorded and mixed at the studio of legendary musical terrorist Bill Laswell, Pitom is a hard-edged new addition to the legacy of Radical Jewish Culture."

Young Widows - Old Wounds CD (Temporary Residence) [TRR138] $13.25
The three members of YOUNG WIDOWS emerged from the dissolution of BREATHER RESIST with a new vision steeped in dark, brooding grooves and moody post-punk. From the reverb-drenched inspiration of Regulator Watts/Hoover to the bass and drums lock-groove perfected by Shellac and the Jesus Lizard, Young Widows gladly wears influences on its sleeve without sounding dated.

Jam - Transglobal Unity Express DVD (Pinnacle) [PPCR004] $17.75

This DVD shows the raw power, emotion and atmosphere of early gigs from a band that changed a legion of young people. This concert presentation was originally released on VHS in 1985 but never available on DVD. Bernard Szajner - Superficial Music CD (Boutique) [BOUCD6618] $16.50
RELEASE DATE: 01-12-2009
LTM presents the first in a series of expanded CD reissues by visionary French electronic composer Bernard Szajner. Originally released in late 1981, Superficial Music incorporates elements of his previous album Visions of Dune played backwards at half speed and treated digitally, as well as the three part suite Oswiecim, an imagining of the Holocaust informed by the experience of his own family. Sometimes harmonious, sometimes unsettling, Szajner's music is never less than extraordinary. Reviews rated the album highly: 'Superficial? No, superlative music! If you care at all for soundscapes that eschew cheap escapes, this album will do far more than tickle the surface of you mind' (NME); 'A significant success - a wholly involving and frequently disturbing blanket of continually contorting synthetic sound' (Melody Maker). The expanded 65 minute CD features three previously unreleased bonus tracks, recorded in 1982. Bernard Szajner biography: Born in Grenoble in 1944, Szajner first made his name as a lighting designer for Magma, Gong and the Who. Having invented new instruments such as the laser harp used by Jean-Michel Jarre, Szajner began to record experimental, conceptual albums of his own, including Visions of Dune (1979), Some Deaths Take Forever (1980), Superficial Music (1981) and Brute Reason (1983). He has also recorded as Zed, and was one half of The (Hypothetical) Prophets. Since the mid 80s, polymath Szajner has worked as a painter, film maker and theatre director. Also available: Some Deaths Take Forever (BOUCD 6620).

Charles Bukowski - Underwater Poetry Festival CD (Roman Photo) [TEMCD010CD] $12.00
Recorded in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 5, 1974; produced for release by Charles Potts. "This never-before released recording of a 1974 poetry reading by world famous 20th century American poet Charles Bukowski (1922-1993) is one you'll have to stuff in your CD player as soon as you get it. In 1974, the intrepid Bukowski journeyed from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City to give a featured reading at the Underwater Poetry Festival, along with Alta, Ricardo Sanchez, and Andy Clausen. The recording of the reading given in the social work auditorium of the University of Utah survived in the archives of the Reverend Sherm W. Clow, President at the time of the renowned Litmus Inc., producer of the festival. It includes more than 20 poems with a table of contents, some introductory and closing patter by MC Charles Potts, and a reproduction of the poster from the UPF is the menu on the CD. Bukowski was just beginning to achieve the lasting fame that would come to him in the next two decades. Hear the man at his droll and noteworthy best."

Chris Wood - Vulcan CD (Esoteric Recordings) [ECLEC2079CD] $18.50
"Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of the album Vulcan by the late Chris Wood, founder member of the legendary Traffic and flautist and saxophonist extraordinaire. Recorded just after the demise of Traffic in 1974, Vulcan was begun for Island Records but shelved in 1978. The sessions featured contributions from Steve Winwood and members of The Wailers, along with a live recording of Traffic performing the title track in 1974, but due to a change in musical fashion with the advent of Punk, the album failed to see the light of day. Island boss Chris Blackwell returned the tapes to Chris Wood in the late 1970's. Following Chris' untimely death in 1983 the tapes were passed on to his sister, Stephanie. Now, 25 years later, and after three years of research and preparation, Esoteric have pieced together the sessions in co-operation with Stephanie Wood to bring you Vulcan."

Edith Sitwell/William Walton/Lord Berners - Follies & Façades CD (El Records) [ACMEM157CD] $15.00
"Edith Sitwell and Lord Berners did more than most to dispel the nationalistic insularity that dominated so much English literature and music in the decade that followed the First World War. The work that brought the Sitwells their greatest fame -- and notoriety -- was Façade, an entertainment that combined Edith's idiosyncratic verse with the music of the young William Walton. With Cocteau s Parade the obvious precedent, the family delighted in creating a first-class scandal in literature and music . Here, the 1929 premiere recording with Constant Lambert appears alongside that made in 1954 with Peter Pears; by all accounts, the only performances of which Edith really approved. Façade owed its existence to the support and encouragement of, among others, Lord Berners. Considered by Stravinsky to be the most gifted composer of his generation, Berners was famously eccentric (A fine biography Lord Berners -The Last Eccentric by Mark Amory was recently published), a diplomat, an accomplished writer, painter, composer and missionary of the arts. As with the Sitwell's, his idealism, openness to new ideas and willingness to embrace humor made for a peculiarly British avant garde. The Berners piece featured in this edition is one of his most widely regarded; the suite from the ballet The Triumph of Neptune which was commissioned by Serge Diagilev in 1926."

Franco Tamponi - Mondo Sexy Di Notte CD (Dagored) [RED184] $17.00
FRANCO TAMPONI's splendid soundtrack to Mino Loy's (aka Donan J. Lee) 1962 original 'shock-u-mentary' Mondo Sexy di Notte (aka Mondo Sexuality), which portrayed cabaret shows from all over the world (although many of the locations are thought to have been reconstructed in the studio), presenting an exotic sensuality that once upon a time represented a form of transgression in the film world, reserved for an adult audience only. Also, for the younger listeners perhaps it will be surprising not to hear the sound of any electronic instrument here-but this was the era when the orchestra reigned supreme. Lovingly restored from the original session tapes recorded in studios in Rome and Milan, where music written by the legends of the Italian film industry became the soundtracks to the great Italian films of the day.

Frankie Dymon Jr. - Let It Out: Poems In Word And Music CD (Fachmann) [GERMAN941153] $16.50
"From 1971. Incredible Kraut/funk meeting of US expatriate and the cream of the German Rock scene: Achim Reichel, Conny Plank, Wolfgang 'Zabba' Lindner (drums, ex-Wind), Peter Hecht (piano, from Lucifer's Friend) and many others. Dymon, probably better known for his role as 'Black Power Militant' in Godard's Sympathy For The Devil and as director of the super-obscure Death May Be Your Santa Claus, mellifluously rants on subjects such as past sexual conquests, racial injustice, and pot-smoking etiquette. First-ever reissue, lyric booklet included."

Gordon Mumma - Music For Solo Piano (1960-2001) 2CD (New World Records) [NW80686CD] $27.75
Performed by Daan Vandewalle, piano. "Gordon Mumma (b. 1935) is best known for his pioneering role in the development and evolution of electronic and live-electronic music. The piano has played a significant if underestimated role in his career. With a few notable exceptions, this collection by pianist Daan Vandewalle marks the first commercial recordings of Mumma's music for solo piano composed over more than forty years. It provides an important new perspective on his work as a composer. The spare textures, irregular rhythms, and pungent dissonances of Bartók's Mikrokosmos echo in Mumma's piano music. The keyboard music of Bach and Haydn, of Schoenberg, Webern, Ives, Ernst Krenek, Carl Ruggles, and Ruth Crawford also shaped his early piano ideal, as did the experience of superb recitalists in Detroit and Ann Arbor, including Walter Gieseking, Dame Myra Hess, and Glenn Gould. The works of the early 1960s were written for the concert hall, but much of the later piano music is more personal -- the solitary dreams of a long musical life. And like dreams it filters memories -- of music of the distant and recent past, of artistic friendships and loved ones living or dead -- to create a uniquely contemporary approach to the piano. In contrast to Mumma's epic electronic works, his keyboard music is predominantly poetic in its brevity, concentration, and psychological depth. It is music of high specific gravity, each piece a microcosm of finely etched ideas that unfold without literal repetition. For Daan Vandewalle, it is also 'music of dialogue' that communicates -- both with the listener and within itself -- through its deep concern with sound, phrasing, color, dynamic range, and rhetorical nuance."

Hardin and York - The World's Smallest Big Band CD (Esoteric Recordings) [ECLEC2090CD] $18.50
"Keyboard player and vocalist Eddie Hardin and drummer Pete York had first played together in the second incarnation of the Spencer Davis Group, following Steve Winwood's departure to form Traffic. In 1969 Hardin & York struck out on their own to form a highly unique duo utilizing powerful Hammond Organ work and percussion to record a series of wonderful albums in the Progressive / Jazz Rock vein. The World's Smallest Big Band was their second album and featured recordings made at Olympic Studios and material recorded live at De Lane Lea studios in front of a small audience. A popular attraction in Europe, the record remains a noted highlight of their career. This Esoteric Recordings reissue includes two bonus tracks."

Ishikawa Akira & Count Buffalo - Uganda: Afurikan Rokku no Yoake CD (Tiliqua) [TILAR5012CD] $28.25
"The start of a new series focusing on lost and obscure sonic treasures birthed out of the underbelly of Japan's New Rock revolution during the period 1969-1978 is spearheaded by the long announced reissue of one of the rarest discs to seep out of that seedy incestuous scene. Ishikawa Akira & Count Buffalo's Uganda - Afurikan Rokku no Yoake originally saw the light of day on February 5th, 1972 on Toshiba Records as part of their '4 Channel Q.M. Sound' series but quickly sank into the depths obscurity, making that only a handful of copies were actually sold while the remaining stock was withdrawn due to very depressing sales and eventually melted down and destroyed. The disc remained a well kept secret for all these years and only a small circle of die-hard music lovers have ever seen an actual original copy, making it these days one of the most treasured and hunted down Japanese rock artifacts. A couple of years ago a bootleg LP edition of the LP came out, sadly sounding quite mediocre but nevertheless rejuvenating a new awareness for the album. Still rumors as to who were the actual performers on the album floated around freely since the group was simply listed as Count Buffalo with no detailed breakdown of who actually played on the album, and as a result there has been much fevered speculation over the years. Therefore, Tiliqua Records thought it wise to release this sonic gem properly, hunt down the license, unraveled the legal entanglements, acquired access to the original mastertapes and subsequently also taking on the quest to track down the actual players involved. So now, with this fully authorized reissue we can finally reveal the full line-up or the key players involved and add some insight into the record's background thanks to the kind participation of Uganda's composer Mr. Muraoka Takeru. Musically speaking, Ishikawa Akira & Count Buffalo's Uganda - Afurikan Rokku no Yoake is vicious psychedelic whirlwind monster of a disc where primitive Afro-spiritual and tribal ethnic percussive blow-outs cross-pollinate with lysergic New Rock fuzz-a-delic dementia and stirring up enough dust and boulders like two-barreled guns coming out of the demon hole. Still, Uganda is more than just that and although it is deceptively intense, it is simultaneously casual in feel yet meticulous in its musical detail and lyrical economy. And seen in retrospect I can now proclaim that this album stands shoulder to shoulder with the best records of that golden era and it was one of Japan's 1970's underground scene's defining moments. In short it is a totally lethal slide that does not fail to create an arresting listening experience. As is the case with all of Tiliqua Record's releases, this one is also crafted out with meticulous care and eye for detail. The CD comes housed in a miniature version of the actual slim cased LP box set, complete with obi and extensive 8-paged Japanese/ English liner notes, illustrated with some archival footage. One time only very limited press, housed in a sturdy hard card mini-LP styled slim box set styled gatefold jacket. Digitally remastered from the original master tapes and graced with faithfully reproduced artwork (although slightly adapted for the single CD box set version) and obi. One time limited press due to the nature of the box set jacket."

Jeanne Moreau - The Immortal CD (El Records) [ACMEM156CD] $15.00
"If there was a single actor who captured the very essence of the French New Wave, it was Jeanne Moreau. In Truffaut's groundbreaking Jules et Jim she achieved global recognition, giving a performance of spellbinding intensity as the mercurial Catherine, who becomes tragically entwined in the lives of two friends who both love her. During the film, she was required to perform the song, 'Tourbillon de la Vie' ('Whirlpool of Life'), which Truffaut felt encapsulated the spirit of his masterpiece. Her recording went on to become a massive radio hit and prompted the idea of recording a full LP under the auspices of producer Jacques Canetti. The award-winning albums that transpired in 1963 and 1966 comprise this edition and feature songs written by Cyrus Bassiak (Serge Rezvani). The debut in collaboration with George Delerue and the legendary Ward Swingle, its elaborate orchestrations giving way on the sequel to more intimate and sensuous settings with guitar and bass. Jules & Jim apart, cinematic highlights include Chimes at Midnight and The Immortal Story for Orson Welles; Diary of a Chambermaid (Luis Bunuel) and for Louis Malle The Lift to The Scaffold and Viva Maria in which she co-starred with Brigitte Bardot."

Joe Maneri & Peter Dolger - Peace Concert (1964) CD (Atavistic) [ALP267] $13.75
A long-lost '60s treasure from the East Coas rescued and produced by KEN VANDERMARK's father, STU! The Peace Concert, as performed in 1964 by living legend JOE MANERI (alto) and PETER DOLGER (drums) has finally been exhumed and properly buffed for public consumption. This never-before released recording has been mastered from the original tapes, and includes an in-depth interview with Boston's elder statesman of improv, conducted by Stu Vandermark. For those caught unawares, Mr. Maneri is the father of violinist MAT MANERI, and is highly regarded as one of the true pioneers of the "language" of the alto saxophone.

Michael Anton And Amok - Jesus Makes You High CD (Fachmann) [GERMAN941152] $16.50
"From 1971. A very strange 'paycheck' project for Conny Plank and Achim Reichel's Gorilla Musik production company. Wonderland-esque German rock with heavy Christian lyrics! A.R. is nowhere to be seen on the sleevenotes but his fingerabdrücke are everywhere. You can make up your own punchline for the album title. First-ever reissue includes full lyrics and two bonus tracks from their only 7" release."

Minami Masato (w/Mizutani Of Hadaka No Rallizes) - The Tropics CD (Showboat/sky Station) [SWAX080CD] $25.75
"This is a second pressing of 1975. First pressing came out in 1971 and is twice as expensive. The Tropics was Minami Masato's first record on which he got assisted by Mizutani Takeshi of the Rallizes Denudes, his only appearance on record ever. Minami Masato was one of Japan's first beatnik hippie scum singers, who before venturing into the music world, spent some time in Mexico where he indulged himself in the narcotic goodies the country had to offer, went to America and witnessed in 1964 the rise of the beatnik movement and saw one of Bob Dylan's early performances. Minami's life would never be the same again. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean, criss-crossed through Europe and returned to Tokyo in 1966. He participated at the 1968 Kyoto Folk Jamboree Festival. However, his debut single did not appear until October 1969, followed by a second single in 1970. This album, his debut appeared in July 1971 for which he got assisted by a loose collective of fan musicians and befriended artists. Hadaka no Rallizes' Mizutani Takeshi was such a fan collaborator since he was quite in awe for what Minami stood for, being the unattached beatnik and drugged singer-songwriter he was. He let loose some ear shattering electric guitar on the album's closing track. This is the sole recorded output of Mizutani on disc. At least officially, if one ignores the dozen bootlegs and unofficially released music of his (like the Arthur Doyle-Mizutani 2LP set that was released without his consent). An unbelievably valuable document of the early Japanese underground. Hyper rare and demented all the way. For lovers of Hadaka no Rallizes, Tomokawa Kazuki, Acid folk, Jandek, and just obscure and psyched out sounds."

Mitch Ryder - Sings The Hits CD (DBK Works) [DBK542] $17.00
Not a greatest hits record but instead a collection by the unsung hero of Detroit rock'n'roll and blue-eyed soul blowing through cover after cover, giving his own unique treatment to everyone from The Supremes to The Drifters, Allen Toussaint to Rufus Thomas. This is no Pat Boone clean up for the refined upper middle class honky set, no sir, this is rough and tough balls-to-the-wall R&B that rocks as hard or harder than the originals with Ryder's signature guttural howl leading the way. A classic on CD for the first time from Detroit's greatest R&B howler.
