Patrick Cowley & Jorge Socarras - Catholic CD (Macro
Recordings) [MACROM014CD] $16.00
Macro Recordings announces the release of a full Patrick Cowley album,
written and performed in collaboration with Indoor Life vocalist Jorge
Socarras, that has never been released. This is NOT a reissue, nor is it
material scrapped by the artists -- the original release of this album was
delayed for 3 decades due to Cowley's tragic death in 1982. Recorded
between 1976 and 1979, Catholic is a genre-bending concept album with a
range from minimalistic proto-techno to synth-driven post-punk --
pre-dating LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture by almost 30 years. Patrick
Cowley (1950-1982) remains one of disco's most influential artists and a
key producer of the genre. With seminal hits like "Do You Wanna Funk,"
"Menergy" and "Megatron Man," his work for disco-superstar Sylvester and of
course, his million-selling remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love," he
created the soundtrack for a whole generation. Artists such as Depeche
Mode, The Pet Shop Boys and New Order cite him as a major influence. With a
whole new global-disco aficionado scene now playing his records every
weekend across the world's clubs, this release is about to hit the streets
right on time. It shows a much broader range than any Cowley or Socarras
material available and gives a totally new perspective to one of the most
inspiring eras in music history.
Sprung aus den Wolken - Dub & Die Plus CD (Klanggalerie)
[10525] $18.75
Originally released in 1981 as an untitled mini album on Zick Zack,
"Dub &
Die" completes our re-issue programme of the band's earliest works.
Recorded at SADW's Cassettencombinat studio in Berlin, the original 8
tracks represent the first release by this German Avantgarde/Industrial
group that was once a member of the "Geniale Dilettanten" movement. Again,
comparison with early Einsterzende Neubauten is permitted, although Sprung
were always more structured and song orientated than their friends. This CD
edition expands the original release with a set of bonus tracks.

Afternoon Naps - Parade CD (Happy Happy Birthday to Me)
[HHBTM111-2] $11.50
RELEASE DATE: 09-22-2009
With nothing more than just 3 minutes, and a "verse-chorus-versechorus-
end!" motto, Afternoon Naps are a vibrant indiepop band from Cleveland,
Ohio. Like Brian Wilson if re-imagined by Felt or the Primitives, these
teenage symphonies are relics from the past; brought back to save the 21st
century from complete and utter pop boredom. Influenced by the C86 scene,
60's bubblegum, and sunshine pop act Yellow Balloon, songwriter/guitarist
Tom Dechristofaro and keyboardist/arranger Leia Hohenfeld have been happily
playing together since 2006. Having no expectations and "Walk away Renee"
constantly spinning on the stereo, the duo recruited some close friends to
help bring the band to life. A consistently enthusiastic live show that's
the equivalent of a 20 minute sugar rush, has helped establish them as one
of indiepop's brightest young acts. Their 2007 debut "Sunbeamed", a loving
homage to sand and summer, was self-released and modestly well received.
The 8 songs clocking in at just a hair under 22 minutes doesn't mean
they're short on ideas, just really good at editing! Many swell things have
been said about "Sunbeamed"..."It may very well be my favorite album of
2007"(fab UK blog Indie-Mp3) and "the best American group that doesn't use
distortion" (some random guy in Sweden...ha!). A quick selling Cloudberry
Records single was to follow, along with some nicely played shows at
notable festivals like Athens Popfest, NYC Popfest, and the first ever of
the popular UK night "Twee as F***" to be held in the united states. Now
singing their hearts out to wider audiences, Afternoon Naps signed onto
Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records, the cozy Athens, GA label, to release
their next batch of fun. "Parade", a new record that's full of ever present
now-ness, day-glo reverb, and energetic hooks for kids, and also adult
kids, is due just in time for the summer of 2009. Highlights include the
"all-things-Cleveland-by-way-of- Morrissey" bombast of "Plum City Fight
Song", the Orange Juice future-disco of "Mitten Fingers", and "The Day We
Started" featuring Leia's mix of Motown's heartbroken soul and a
flirtatious Amelia Fletcher. Do you wanna smile? Sulk over lost love?
Cringe at pictures of yourself from school years past when you wore that
ONE sweater and the boy in front of you never spoke a word? Well they can't
help you there, but one listen to these sparkling tunes and you just might
cheer up and be ready to take on the impending dullness that is the near
future! Afternoon Naps are a band to listen to if you are doing some or all
of the following things: petting animals, hammocking, beach combing,
dancing, looking out a window.
Al
Green - Call Me CD (Fat Possum) [FPH1146] $12.00
REISSUED!!! A reissue of AL GREEN's-the man on whose voice the sun
never
sets-1973 country/R&B crossover album featuring memorable versions of Hank
Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and Willie Nelson's "Funny How
Time Slips Away."
Al
Green - Have A Good Time CD (Fat Possum) [FPH1143] $12.00
REISSUED!!! "The final offering from the magical collaboration between
AL
GREEN and producer WILLIE MITCHELL, Have a Good Time found the dynamic duo
in the midst of a creative crossroads. Green had just purchased a church
and was looking to pour his energies into his congregation and his newly
appointed title of Reverend. While the message and tones of religion aren't
as obvious on Have a Good Time as they were on Full of Fire, they still do
make appearances here and there. But it wasn't just a change in Green's
life that made Have a Good Time so distinct from the earlier classics; it
was also the changing shift in cultural tastes (thanks in no small part to
the emergence of disco to the forefront of America's collective dance
consciousness). With style shifts and members of a once solid backing band
going their own way, the writing on the wall couldn't have been any clearer
to both Green and Mitchell. With Have a Good Time they recapture moments of
classic collaboration, the wonderful 'Nothing Takes the Place of You' being
the prime example of how good the two could be when they were in sync."-Rob
Theakston, All Music Guide
Al
Green - Explores Your Mind CD (Fat Possum) [FPH1145] $12.00
REISSUED!!! 1974's Al Green Explores Your Mind (originally released on
HI
Records) continues the Mitchell and Green uptempo groovy hard soul
alliance. Although more mellow than Green's previous releases, this album
reflects only in part the changes WILLIE MITCHELL had begun to weave into
his music, giving his productions a lighter feel. This is because Al Green
is unique and his style can't be confused with anyone else, no matter what
producers do to the arrangements. Contains the classic "Take Me To The
River," later also recorded by the Talking Heads and the sentimental
"School Days."
Ann
Peebles - Part Time Love CD (Fat Possum) [FPH1177] $12.00
REISSUED!!! "The title track was a masterpiece, and everything else on
this
dynamic early '70s soul session is a jewel. ANN PEEPLES may have been the
most overlooked great soul singer, male or female, who emerged in the '70s.
Hi couldn't strike crossover gold twice, and Al Green was becoming a
superstar. But Peebles deserved a better fate than obscurity, as this
collection of soul wailers and weepers proves."-Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
Antony & The Johnsons - Aeon CD (Secretly Canadian) [SC209]
$7.25
ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS return with a new double A-side single. "Aeon" is
one
of the highlights of the critical and commercial smash album The Crying
Light, which debuted at #1 on the European chart. The band appeared on The
Late Show with David Letterman for the song's television debut. Antony and
the Johnsons' earnest and impassioned cover of Beyonce's "Crazy in Love," a
long time live favorite, is being released officially for the first time.
Aranos - Surrounded by Hermits CD (Pieros) [10524] $16.75
Electro-acoustic piece divided into 16 sections crisscrossing echoes of
varied genres. Starting with section build on a bowed chinese gong modified
by waw-waw pedal moves into cluster chords of conch-shells and flugal
horns. String ensembles augmented by 20 voices randomly reciting
Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, honky tonk piano plays surreal dream
motifs. You get the idea. No? Have a listen than. Comes in an individually
hand-made wood and hessian case with a small woodcut print.
Area C - The Planetarium Project CD (Sedimental) [sed2cd053]
$14.50
RELEASE DATE: 08-31-2009
In live collaboration with Black Forest/Black Sea, Eyes Like Saucers
and
Mudboy.
Double full length cd release limited to 500 copies(less than 400 available for wholesale) housed in a stunning and uniquely designed handmade hand assembled letterpress cardstock sleeve by discerning artist Amy Borezo at her Shelter Bookworks studio in Western MA.
We have been fans and have closely followed Providence's Area C project for several years. It was simply a matter of time before we would release something by this dynamic artist and these special recordings presented themselves as the obvious choice. AREA C'S work has always appealed in its ability to be at once hypnotically accessible balanced by subtle and brooding dark elements under the surface. It recalls both post-rock elements as well as the more experimental works of classic 70's German space rock groups. The live collaborations with the other Providence based artists push Area C's distinctive sound in compelling directions. This document represents over two hours of carefully selected music taken from many evenings of performances.
About The Planetarium Project: In 2007, Erik Carlson of AREA C came up with the alt-Space idea as a way to explore interactions between sound and space in environments that are not normally viewed or used as venues for art. Its intent is to serve as a medium through which AREA C and other like-minded musicians could create new music that is inspired by and engages with unique architectural locations. An obvious first choice was the Cormack Planetarium, hidden within the slightly threadbare, Victorian-era Museum of Natural History in Providence, RI. These live performances -- collaborations between AREA C and Black Forest/Black Sea, Mudboy and Eyes Like Saucers -- became the basis of the Planetarium Project.
For each performance, AREA C and the collaborating artist composed a new, largely improvisational piece based on a visual score created by Carlson that corresponded to the planetarium display that he had designed with the planetarium staff, utilizing the planetarium's Zeiss projector and some of their more antique equipment. Recorded in almost total darkness, these live performances mix in a palette of live instrumentation with samples from of a range of cosmic phenomena, including whistlers, bow shock, and kilometric radiation: all forms of radio emission produced by the magnetic fields of planets and other cosmic bodies. The Planetarium Project weaves these sounds into a fabric that plays between three sets of extremes: analog+digital, electric+acoustic, high tech + low fi.
The dome of the planetarium is filled with millions of tiny perforations. When projected light hits this surface, it produces a blurred effect, causing a slight optical shimmer: a low-fi way of mimicking the shimmer of distance we feel when viewing the real night sky. The music composed for the Planetarium Project was inspired by the way this domed room warps the sounds and images created here, while also wrapping the audience and performers within them.
The alt-Space performances were
funded through a grant from the Rhode Island State Council.
Arecibo - Trans Plutonian Transmission CD (Soleilmoon
Recordings) [10528] $10.75
No description available at this time.
Bela Bartok - Mikrokosmos (Selections) 2CD (EMI) [EMI95570CD]
$12.75
Performed by Georges Solchany. "This exciting series of 2-CD sets from
EMI
Classics features music written in the 20th century, a period of enormous
upheaval, both political and artistic. During these 100 years, music went
through an unprecedented period of revolution and transformation, and the
music in these sets illustrates how these changes manifested themselves in
the musical landscape. With striking covers and budget prices, these sets
provide a perfect introduction to the oft-times challenging music of these
composers."
Black Sheep - Kiss My Sweet Apocalypse 2CD (Invada) [INV068CD]
$26.50
"Kiss My Sweet Apocalypse is the debut double-LP and 2 CD set from
Julian
Cope's brand new free action group Black Sheep. Black Sheep music is of the
moment, beautiful as a princess one minute, hobbling like a smitten
ditch-dweller the next. Songs are long and strung out, combining chanting
and street protest with ambient meditations on the Culture Heroes of the
Past. Eulogies to such revolutionaries as Che Guevara, Ulrike Meinhof, and
one of the Cope's long time obsessions Leila Khaled, are offset by chanting
and massed drum works outs and tripped out ambulant pieces such as the
near-half hour long title track."
Black To Comm - Charlemagne & Pippin CD (Digitalis) [ACE026]
$11.00
MARC RICHTER's new BLACK TO COMM offering Charlemagne & Pippin churns
out
a slowly, methodically building single-tone battleship, that somehow
manages to become more powerful, hopeful, and grandiose as it oscillates.
Richter's characteristic organ noise is rounded off beautifully with
various electronics, bells, metal percussion, toys, water, and violins,
provided by band members RENATE NIKOLAUS and ULF SCHUTTE, which grow around
the central note yet slowly move to the center themselves. The Bursting
electronics, white noise, and buzzes become more frequent and attempt to
overpower the mighty organ. Together, these three musicians bring about a
musical pairing that suits the title. A pairing of power and play, father
and son, age and youth. Its probably best to turn the lights off and the
speakers up for this meditative 35-minute slab of drone excellence.
Blood Fountains - Floods CD (Utech Records) [UR023CD]
$15.25
"There is no beginning, there is no end, only perpetual oscillation
between
experience, memory and gravity. Emotion propels our lives, connected to one
another and all things through infinity. Floods reaches inward, to the icy
depths of the heart to touch and to return with ancient elements unfolding
in spectral bliss and horror. Reality of pain and agony is equally married
with yearning, dreaming and joyous exaltation. Stephen Kasner evokes a
fully-realized painting-to-music translation, with collaborations by David
Beaver, Mat Woods, Cheryl Pyle and the haunting vocals of Yoshiko Ohara
(Bloody Panda). Floods calls forth a remarkable section of time and
feeling, simultaneously compressed and unfurling. A frozen monster of
memories, hope and love, and a constant reminder of death's door. Seamless,
endless, connected energy. These are fragments of hauntings within us all.
We must always remember. Edition of 750."
Box
Elders - Alice And Friends CD (Goner) [48GONE] $12.00
BOX ELDERS is the brainchild of brothers CLAYTON and JEREMIAH MCINTYRE,
who
began making music in Friday night goof-off sessions that originally
featured their mom on drums. Adopting a name from the bugs that infested
their house, they started gigging around Omaha, Nebraska, and soon added
drummer DAVE GOLDBERG, who signed on after catching the band at a free
performance in a local park. Rather than search for a fourth band member,
the McIntyres suggested Goldberg play both drums and organ simultaneously.
It took some practice. In January 2008, Box Elders released their debut
7-inch on Grotto Records and spent much of the year touring the USA. The
fuzzy, off-kilter pop of the record caught the attention of Memphis,
Tennessee's Goner Records and earned them a slot at the label's annual
music festival, Goner Fest, as well as a spot on the Goner roster,
alongside acts ranging from Guitar Wolf and Jay Reatard to Eddy Current
Suppression Ring, Ty Segall, and Reigning Sound. As soon as they returned
to Omaha, Box Elders began working on their first full-length, Alice and
Friends, named after their favorite cult-run vegan Korean BBQ joint.
Featuring fourteen tracks and cover art drawn by MICHAEL GRUBER, Alice and
Friends is destined to be one of the most-talked about debuts of 2009. On
tour now.
Boyd Rice - No "The New Bible" Book (Heartworm) [10527]
$12.50
An 112 page new-classic of blunt realities, social composition and
discourse. NO dissects 45 deceptive affairs including Rebellion, The Sexes,
Individuality, Equality, Peace, The Nazis, and Keeping It Real, all brought
to light in a fashion that only Boyd Rice can. If past written collections
of his work serve as time-capsuled history, let NO be the words of the
future.
The cofounder of the genre known as Industrial Music currently
resides in an underground compound in Denver, Colorado, leading the life of
a recluse. He has no girlfriends, no pets, no computer, and no cell phone.
Though truly, this artist needs no introduction. Debossed paperback. First
edition of 1313.
Brodinski - Buggedout! Presents Suck My Deck CD (New State
Recordings) [NEW9048CD] $12.00
"Bugged Out! return with another installment of their highly respected
Suck
My Deck album series, this time landing Brodinski to do the mix honors.
Brodinski is the most exciting DJ and producer to explode onto the scene in
recent years. Yes, he may hail from France (Reims, Lille) but he is quite
unlike any of his Parisian peers. His taste in music is broad and this is
reflected in his own productions and DJ sets, which may encompass noisy
techno, bass heavy house through to more melodic minimal. The Brodinski
fuss started with his debut track 'Bad Runner' that leaked onto blog sites
months before it's release on the Mental Groove label in October 2007.
Supported by everyone from Soulwax, Tiga, Chloe, Erol Alkan, A Trak, Busy
P, Switch and Laurent Garnier the track was peak time techno featuring
Martian's yakking through it and was one of the sleeper hits of the year.
Since 'Bad Runner,' Brodinski has remixed Bonde de Role, Klaxons, Das Pop,
Shoes, D.I.M, Heart Revolutions and Adam Sky. Each remix has had a
different approach, from the acidic (D.I.M), to vocal techno (Das Pop), to
melancholic end-of-nighters (Klaxons). Already championed by Radio Soulwax,
Tiga's Turbo plus Bugged Out, Brodinski has already been offered multiple
gigs and festival slots."
Bunnygrunt - Matt Harnish & Other Delights CD (Happy Happy
Birthday to Me) [HHBTM110-2] $11.50
RELEASE DATE: 09-15-2009
Bursting into existence during the brief-lived Great Indie Pop Scare of
the
mid-1990's, Bunnygrunt garnered an unlikely amount of success for a band
that never managed to plan any further ahead than their next tour. Over
their initial five year run, the St Louis band toured the entire USA a
half-dozen times, released two great albums, a million singles &
compilation tracks, and then blew out in a blaze of glory with a whirlwind
tour of Japan. After pursuing other interests for a few years, main
Grunt-ers Karen Ried & Matt Harnish decided to dust off the Bunnygrunt
brand name for another go around. An appearance at the Athens Popfest
cemented their return to activity, but also marked a broadening in their
sound. While the jangling guitars and harmony-filled choruses of 90's indie
pop remain, Bunnygrunt's solid Midwestern Classic Rock upbringing is
equally represented, as is their love of 70's Power Pop & 60's Nuggets
fuzz. This isn't music for blogs, this is shout along live, loud, in the
joyful moment Rock-n-Roll.
Cale Parks - To Swift Mars Ep CD (Polyvinyl) [PRC182] $6.75
CALE PARKS, influential and renowned drummer for ALOHA and WHITE
WILLIAMS,
is back with a new six-track EP titled To Swift Mars. With this release,
Parks takes his songwriting to another level with immediate, concise pop
structures that weave together electronic elements with full-bodied
percussion and influences ranging from the overlapping arpeggios of Philip
Glass to the early solo work of Peter Gabriel. Recorded at Inner Ear
studios by fellow Aloha member T.J. LIPPLE and mixed by BRIAN JACOBS of
Apes and Androids.
Concern - Truth & Distance CD (Digitalis) [ACE027] $11.00
GORDON ASHWORTH is CONCERN and this is his manifesto. Truth & Distance
is a
mini-epic, a minor masterpiece. Within these sonic walls lies a stunning
landscape, adrift in golden tones and silver siren songs. Ashworth creates
beautiful, shimmering music that defies categorization. It stands on its
own, droning away into the furthest reaches of the night. Using only
acoustic instrumentation, Ashworth conceives pieces of music in which
resonance and timbre mutate and in the air and unfold naturally,
organically. Hints of piano glisten like night shadows whispering through
the leaves. Strings are bowed and plucked into oblivion. Everything is
turned into a pile of reverb. Everyone is a ghost. Concern will shine a
light on it all. Packaged in custom-designed silkscreened gatefolds by
Seizure Palace.
Desolation Wilderness - New Universe CD (K Records) [KLP204]
$13.25
Swooning guitars, found sounds, synthesizer trills, forward percussion
and
dream vocals; New Universe is the second full-length album by DESOLATION
WILDERNESS. It alternates between lonely sounds and the euphoria of freedom
and distance-like an empty, foggy beach in the early morning. After
touring the country extensively, this album is the labor of a restless
engine; postcards from being constantly on the move.
Fire! - You Liked Me Five Minutes Ago CD (Rune Grammofon)
[RCD2091CD] $16.00
This is the debut full-length release from excellent Swedish jazz trio,
Fire! -- something of a supergroup with members from already well-known
quarters. Sax player, improviser and composer Mats Gustafsson is probably
best-known from power-jazz trio The Thing, but he has also played more than
1,500 concerts and participated on around 150 records with musicians such
as Peter Brötzmann, Sonic Youth, Merzbow, Jim O'Rourke, Barry Guy, Otomo
Yoshihide, Ken Vandermark, Hamid Drake, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Joe
McPhee, and countless others. Johan Berthling is a founding member of Tape
and founded the Häpna label. His other current groups include Animes with
David Stackenäs and Raymond Strid and Sten Sandell Trio with pianist Sten
Sandell and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love. Andreas Werliin is the drummer
extraordinaire in Wildbirds & Peacedrums with fellow improv colleague,
Mariam Wallentin, and they have released two acclaimed albums of modern,
bluesy folk music. The collaboration of Fire! don't sound anything like the
groups the members are normally associated with, which is exactly the way
it should be. With their hypnotic, psychedelic jazz of sorts, they don't
sound like anyone else at all. CD edition includes a 16-page color booklet,
masterfully and beautifully designed and assembled by Kim Hiorthøy. Fire!
is: Mats Gustafsson (saxophones, electronics, Fender Rhodes), Johan
Berthling (double bass and electric bass, electric guitar, Hammond organ),
and Andreas Werliin (drums and percussion).
Helado Negro - Awe Owe CD (Asthmatic Kitty) [AKR65] $13.25
Drawing from a rich variety of influences from the cradle to his crate
digging years, ROBERTO LANGE cites influences such as Funkadelic, DJ
Premiere, South American '60s pop, Arthur Russell, Ecuadorean ballad singer
Julio Jaramillo, and Adrian Sherwoods' production style in the early ON-U
Sound releases. But when asked about his contemporaries, Lange references
all the players on the album, adding the names of visual artists DAVID
ELLIS and CHRISTIAN MARCLAY, two artists who use elements of DJ culture in
their work. This is apropos when listening to the record, which it seems as
if the songs have been sculpted or painted.
Her
Space Holiday - Sleepy Tigers CD (Mush Records) [MH041CD] $8.25
"Sleepy Tigers is the lead off single from Her Space Holiday's
full-length,
'XOXO, Panda And The New Kid Revival.' In addition to the title track,
three new compositions are included on the release. These tracks are not
outtakes or throwaways from the recording of the full-length, but are in
fact fully realized works completed in a fit of inspiration as the single
was being compiled. For longtime fans of Her Space Holiday, those anxious
to hear the new creative direction taken on XOXO, Panda And The New Kid
Revival, or new listeners yet to discover what makes Her Space Holiday one
of Mush's most beloved acts, Sleepy Tigers is the perfect preview of what's
to come."
Holiday Shores - Columbus'd The Whim CD (Twosyllable) [TSR005]
$11.00
Summer is no myth. It exists year round on Holiday Shores Court, a
two-block stretch on the Florida panhandle where twenty-one year old NATHAN
PEMBERTON grew up. It's no more than five minutes from white sand beaches,
squawks of seagulls, and wafting smells of suntan lotion. Columbus'd The
Whim is the first first full-length album from Pemberton's HOLIDAY SHORES,
who, like the street that bears their name, are quintessentially summer:
chimey guitars, reverb-soaked vocals, warbling Rhodes, echoes of years
past. The album, packed with 10 could-be singles, reads like a book of
Pemberton's well-written memories. Each word chosen meaningfully with a
linguist's touch; each sentence constructed carefully with an artist's ear.
Columbus'd The Whim is a literary work in addition to a sonic one. Multiple
features in Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan have already posted.
Horseback - The Invisible Mountain CD (Utech Records) [UR039CD]
$15.25
"As Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain was a satire of the western approach to
personal enlightenment and self-actualization, Horseback's The Invisible
Mountain is a work composed as a means to channel the self-destructive
tendencies of its maker Jenks Miller. The channeling process has required a
functionally solipsistic worldview based on the efficacy of individual will
in ascertaining its specific reality. This worldview, in turn, has caused a
sort of fissure between social consciousness and individual consciousness.
In specific, the invisible mountain is an abstraction of the God-self in
this whole process, a tenuous and ever-collapsing fabrication that
perpetuates the individual psyche amidst processes that would otherwise
destroy it or steal its creative power. The mountain itself is false:
existing only to the individual as he climbs toward self-realization, and
unknowable in any external reality; but it is as necessary as it is false.
Without the fabrication, individual reality would crumble and one would be
stripped of creative power. The record itself is based on repetitive guitar
riffs and drum patterns similar to mantras in meditation, blackened vocals
referencing the uncomfortable tension between one's quest for transcendence
and their unresolved relationship with the rest of society The tracks are
devices to help maintain discipline in an attempt to conquer. The last
track breaks from the mantras into a less rigorously controlled wash of
sound. Liberation. Pressed with black ink on a black translucent paper
sleeve. All white inserts with poster. Illustration by Denis Kostromitin.
Edition of 500."
Isolrubin BK - Crash Injury Trauma CD (Soleilmoon Recordings)
[00343] $10.75
No description available at this time.
Ivan Smagghe - Live At Robert Johnson Vol. 3 CD (Live At Robert
Johnson) [PLAYRJC003CD] $14.75
This is the third volume in a 4-part CD compilation series celebrating
the
10th anniversary of Frankfurt's Robert Johnson club. Volume 3 has been
selected and mixed by Frenchman Ivan Smagghe. After Chloé's coy and
sensible entry, and Prins Thomas' Norwegian diskomiks attack, Smagghe
continues his reputation as a DJ with impeccable taste, an impressive
record collection, and a sense for avant-garde sounds old and new. He has
been part of acts such as Black Strobe, Volga Select, Kill The DJ, It's A
Fine Line with Tim Paris and La Horse with Danton Eeprom. As a regular
guest DJ at club nights and loft parties across the globe, you won't find
any run-of-the-mill tracks here, latest crazes or hyped patterns, but quite
a personal slice of Ivan Smagghe and what he likes to do in a club. His
former project Black Strobe once described itself as the "dark side of
disco, frozen Balearic, gay biker-house, boogie-trance, heavy electronica
and soft-goth," which is quite an adept description of the music here.
Postmodern rockabilly techno could be another one. You will find a Kruton
remix next to the Wighnomy Bros., Swiss Nu-Yoricadiscotheque-music from In
Flagranti, Seymour Bits and Röyskopp, all handled with care and mixed with
an ear for the right action. Even the very last record of a DJ night is
considered in the mix. After a brief pause and a breezy moment, Rheingold's
new wave classic "Dreiklangsdimensionen" dulcifies your exit. Other artists
include: Gary Beck, Two Banks Of Four, Eddie Zarook & Casio Casino,
Entertainment, Holy F***, It's A Fine Line, Ryan Davis, Battant, Marc
Houle, Loin Brothers, Mock & Toof, and Dark Day.
Jay
Haze - Fabric 47 CD (Fabric) [FABRIC093CD] $17.50
"Jay Haze stands out as a visionary in the world of techno and house, a
true nonconformist within a blinkered scene. But his work supports his
revered status as an exceedingly prolific producer, DJ, live performer,
collaborator and label owner. His wide-ranging labels ring true to
themselves and never sway, each holding on tight to their own
characteristic sound and group of artists: the house-oriented TuningSpork;
the harder hitting tech-based Contexterrior and the down tempo dubby tones
of Future Dub. Jay also brought on the explosion of 2003's Textone, his
inventive creation of an online music magazine and internet label, which
was created years before digital stores like Beatport or the now-prevalent
online magazines/blogs had caught on. Beyond his own labels, Jay Haze's
genre-expanding, experimental productions have graced the catalogues of
Playhouse, Kitty-Yo, Cocoon, Get Physical, and his remixes have been on
labels far and wide, from Shitkatapult to Playhouse to BPitch Control to
Soma. In 2005, he released his debut LP on Kitty-Yo, 'Love For a Strange
World,' an album that challenged the world of techno further by questioning
genre lines and embracing all that's unconventional and unpredictable. His
more dancefloor (and humour) geared moniker F***pony launched his career
with Get Physical, the Children of Love album being one of the most
celebrated underground albums of 2006. Fabric 47 is the deep, wandering
heartbeat of 4/4's most bold, valiant and versatile character; a bright,
cohesive mix that is inherently Jay Haze through and through. Deeply-rooted
in his free and capricious spirit, the flawlessly assembled collection of
tracks thump with soul and alluring eccentricities. Grooving with an
airtight flow across wide-ranging beats and styles, Fabric 47 is a
charismatic portrait of Jay Haze's musical clan: the mix not only showcases
the peerless artists he works with on his family of labels, as well as the
many monikers that comprise Jay Haze, it's also a glimpse into the
soul-fuelled, future sound that they've collectively mastered. Teased
throughout with samples from his Fuckpony track 'Lady Judy' (a song
dedicated to our own fabric promoter, Judy Griffith -- and a nod to the
Daniel Bell classic, 'Baby Judy'), he takes things dubbier with Alex
Celler's enchanting 'Trapped In Dub', trippier with the groove-laden
'Mellow Dee' (created with former studio partner Ricardo Villalobos in
'08), and epic with the penultimate Fuckpony track, 'Burning', Fabric 47 is
Jay Haze incarnate; deep, daring and brave. Seventy minutes in the company
of this disc leaves you feeling edified and your faith in music's
brilliance renewed."

John Foxx is an amazing musician. He's full of visionary ideas.' KLAXONS
'A true pioneer.' LADYTRON
'John Foxx is a genuinely creative, innovate and inventive artist'.'GARY NUMAN
'I think apart from his incredibly cinematic lyrics -- John's msuic always conjures entire movies in my head -- I think it is his mastery of atmosphere that has most stayed with me through the years. If I could only make a movie as textured and evocative as John's music I would be a happy man.' ALEX PROYAS, DIRECTOR of I ROBOT & THE CROW
'Early Ultravox were the Velvet Underground of my generation.' JOHN TAYLOR, DURAN DURAN
John Foxx, the man behind Ultravox's first three post-punk albums and his electro solo masterpiece Metamatic (described as 'visionary' by the Klaxons), releases two news albums -- Impossible and A New Kind Of Man. This follows 2009's critically acclaimed Mirrorball (with Robin Guthrie), which was described as a 'breathtakingly beautiful' in the NME and by Q as featuring the 'best of both their recent works: Foxx's epic, sepulchral grandstanding and Guthrie's intricate, filmic soundscaping.'
A New Kind Of Man was recorded on Foxx's 2007 Metamatic Tour and includes live versions of all the tracks off the pioneering electronic album, plus B-sides and rarities. As Uncut comments, 'This is the Klaxons' all-time favourite album apparently but its influence moves immeasurably beyond that', while
The Sunday Times recognizes that Metamatic is 'a hugely influential album and still an eerie experience to hear it all these years later.' Mojo raved about its minimalist approach, concluding that it's cold electronics and stark vocals make it 'one of the most under-emoted records in pop history.'
Meanwhile, John Foxx & Louis Gordon's album, Impossible features two
new tracks - "Adult Concerns' and "Walk This Way' - plus 10
re-worked versions of previously released material including classics such
as 'Dislocation' and 'The Man Who Dies Every Day'.. Some of these are
completely new arrangements, others are closer to the live versions.
There's a raw, analogue, fractured, aggressive style to the material - the
closest in sound is Foxx/Gordon's 2003's Crash & Burn but it's heavier than
that album, featuring "rusty metallic synths', live improvisations and
'shredded' vocals. William Burroughs, Del Toro and the strobe-lit
techno-punk imagery of early Ultravox! are all reference points on one of
the darkest albums John Foxx has released in years.

Karlheinz Stockhausen - Spiral I & II, Pole, Wach, Japan,
Zykus, Tierkries 2CD (EMI) [EMI95598CD] $12.75
Performed by Harald Bojé, Christoph Caskel, Peter Eötvös, Tristan Fry,
Markus Stockhausen, Margareta Hurholz. "This exciting series of 2-CD sets
from EMI Classics features music written in the 20th century, a period of
enormous upheaval, both political and artistic. During these 100 years,
music went through an unprecedented period of revolution and
transformation, and the music in these sets illustrates how these changes
manifested themselves in the musical landscape. With striking covers and
budget prices, these sets provide a perfect introduction to the oft-times
challenging music of these composers."
Kreidler - Mosaik 2014 CD (Italic) [ITALIC086CD] $17.75
"Early in 1994, Kreidler was founded by Thomas Klein, Andreas Reihse,
Detlef Weinrichand, Stefan Schneider on bass guitar who was to leave
Kreidler some years later in order to form To Rococo Rot; his place was
taken by Alex Paulick (now of Coloma) up until 2001. Kreidler 's album Riva
was released 1994 on a small Parisian label. This was to be the first of 16
releases to date, with the latest Eve Future Recall (2004). Followed by the
score for the movie Durchfahrtsland in 2006.Among the artists to have been
remixed by Kreidler are such venerable names as Faust, Einstürzende
Neubauten, Depeche Mode, and Appliance. Their musical collaborations
include Add (N) to X, Young Gods, Momus or Chicks on Speed. Kreidler have
played over 300 shows throughout Europe, Asia and North America. In techno
clubs and concert halls. At the Sonar and Roskilde festivals. In museums
and art galleries. At the Van Dijk retrospective in Antwerp and the
openings of Andreas Gursky in New York's Museum of Modern Art and in the
Centre Pompidou, Paris. Commissioned by Goethe Institut they went on a
concert tour in Southeast Asia. Kreidler's music has graced the catwalks
e.g. of Chanel, Lacoste, or at the London Fashion Week of Giles Deacon. It
is used in films, theatre-plays or in modern dance productions e.g. Pina
Bausch's Ten Chi. On the new studio album Mosaik 2014, Kreidler champion a
kind of Godardian futurism in which the 20th and 22nd centuries merge.
Science fiction and modernity: Arrangements that feel right, without being
able to map them out because all of the lines are woven together so
intricately, and because the album was recorded mainly in a week of live
sessions. Above all, this record has more. More rhythm, drums, percussion.
More keyboards, better yet, synthesizers that are immediate and cannot be
turned away, sounds that demand something and yet retain great mystery.
More off-kilter loops and more electrical storms. But it is all there to
serve the same purpose: to make this the best Kreidler album of all
Kreidler albums. There is a directness, and things come to the point while
still leaving enough free space. There is longing, solace, fulfillment. In
other words, big emotions."
Lightning Dust - Infinite Light CD (Jagjaguwar) [JAG139]
$13.25
Infinite Light, LIGHTNING DUST's sophomore album for Jagjaguwar, finds
duo
of AMBER WEBBER and JOSHUA WELLS (both of BLACK MOUNTAIN) calling upon the
powers of classic pop arrangements and making the most of five days with a
Steinway Grand piano. While Webber and Wells met through their involvement
in what they described as two of the saddest bands in Canada, the songs
written for Infinite Light found the two moving away from the uniformly
downbeat. Rather, the songs were more suited to lush and melodramatic
arrangements.
Loco Dice - 7 Dunham Place 4x^12 inch CD (Desolat)
[DESOLAT001LP] $38.75
Gatefold 4x12" version. Originally released in 2008, this is the debut
full-length release by renowned Düsseldorf minimal DJ, producer and Desolat
label-head, Loco Dice. 7 Dunham Place has been created to take the listener
on a journey: an album to be treasured as a fine-textured catalog of the
senses. Loco Dice, who spends much of his time shuttling between the
world's main electronic music ports as an in-demand DJ, packed up his
studio and relocated to New York City. There, he fomented a raw and
simmering soundtrack: a nuance-packed collection of sonic interpretations
of scenes, characters and moods from the most diverse and mythologized city
in the world. The album specifically pays homage to their adopted home
base, Brooklyn, while sketching the trajectory of a musical life uprooted
and transplanted, where dream-like feelings of isolation and melancholy
transmute into a sense of place and kinship. Loco Dice began a fruitful
studio partnership with Martin Buttrich in 2002 leading to tracks like
"Phat Dope Shit," "Menina Brasiliera," and "Seeing Through Shadows," and
these productions are meticulously planned by Dice. It's a directorial,
cinematic outlook, which permeates Dice's everyday life: fed by his
experiences living in extreme environments like Ibiza and New York, as well
as drawing on elaborate film scripts imagined as a young Loco Dice on the
streets of Flingern in Düsseldorf and the Kerkennah Islands in Tunisia.
It's an album that re-imagines the soul of a city, built from careful
observations of urban tribes that crisscross and sometimes clash, of minute
details and sensory impressions. From the two guys at the local deli who're
always on the verge of fighting over football results or presidential
candidates, to the tattooed lady couple who sell the morning soul food, all
find their way into this cohesive collection of tracks which breathe
deeply, and as they exhale, tell a story. "M Train To Brooklyn" includes
the sounds of a subway train on the tracks, with a low-slung, incredibly
relaxed vibe, "Esquina" is a Latin-themed piano-led track with bouncy
beats, and "Tight Laces" uses sampled female voices, shakers, and analog
squiggles that make the track sound absolutely propulsive, like everyday
life. 7 Dunham Place is your city-commute headphones soundtrack with
reduced grooves, kept infinitely personal.

Lovely Eggs, The - If You Were Fruit CD (Happy Happy Birthday
to Me) [HHBTM114] $11.50
RELEASE DATE: 08-31-2009
The Lovely Eggs are David and Holly. The pair started playing music
together in Paris when they discovered a pigeon had laid two lovely egg in
an abandoned nest on Holly's windowsill. When the eggs finally hatched,
Holly and David travelled to live above a jewellery shop in Lancaster in
the North West of England, where they formed their new band The Lovely
Eggs! The Lovely Eggs played their first ever gig in New York in 2006 and
since then they have attracted quite a following! BBC DJs Huw Stephens,
Marc Riley, Rob Da Bank, Tom Robinson and Steve Lamacq as well as legendary
music journalist Everett True are all fans of The Lovely Eggs' quirky
lo-fi, DIY sound. Last year the band were invited by Huw Stephens to
perform at Swn Festival in Cardiff and recorded a Radio One session at BBC
Maida Vale for Huw's 'Introducing' show. The pair have also performed a
live session on Marc Riley's BBC 6 Music show, as well as for XFM as part
of Manchester's international music convention 'In The City'. The Lovely
Eggs have played all over the world from Amsterdam squats and Los Angeles
scrap yards to steam trains in Ripley and tea parties in Manchester! David
plays a unique drumcycle with handlebars on the front so he can drum and
bike at the same time. He also plays the bicycle bell and squeaky horn, the
glockenspiel, ukelele and slightly wonky recorders. Holly sings and plays
the guitar. And sometimes she hit's a drum with a wooden stick with wool
tied around the end. David made it for her because he likes making things.
The band also have a wide internet fan base and were voted "Best Band
of 2008' by blogsite The Devil Has The Best Tuna. Their first single and
international radio hit "I Like Birds But I Like Other Animals Too' was
voted "Best track of 2008' and the title track of their latest EP
"Have You Ever Heard A Digital Accordion?" was ranked #11 by
listeners of the popular internet radio station Dandelion Radio in their
2008 Peel inspired Festive 50 chart. Holly used to be in the all-girl
indiepop band Angelica, who received widespread critical acclaim and
extensive airplay on Radio 1 with songs like 'Why Did You Let My Kitten
Die?' and "Bring Back Her Head' which is featured in the film Malice in
Wonderland, to be released later this year. The Lovely eggs released their
14 track debut album 'If You Were Fruit' on Cherryade Records in the UK in
June 2009 and wowed fans on a recent tour of the UK, including a number of
one off unusual performances in charity shops, on beaches and in a fan's
garage! 'If You Were Fruit' will see its American release in August by
Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records, featuring new artwork from Oakland
artist Jon Carling and an additional five bonus tracks from the band's
first two UK EPs. The band will then go on to perform a string of west
coast dates and embark on an American tour with label mates Cars Can Be
Blue. Look out for The Lovely Eggs near you!
Lucid Dream (John Tejada) - Recovered Data 1995 CD (Phthalo)
[PH52] $13.25
RELEASE DATE: 08-11-2009
***House and techno music producer JOHN TEJADA's newest album project,
Recovered Data 1995, is released under the name LUCID DREAM as the second
in Phthalo Records' Phthalo Origins series and is, as the Origins name
implies, actually Tejada's very first full length, recorded back in 1995.
The aggressively melodic album was recorded as a conscious, focused effort
to get Tejada's music heard by other artists and DJs. And, of course, it
worked: the result was a deal with now defunct A13 Records, with whom
Tejada released two Lucid Dream singles and a full length album called Pure
Punk. Recovered Data 1995, however, was in many ways the original version
of that album. The original title was slated to be Palette, a name which
electronic music aficionados will recognize as the name Tejada later used
for his own record label, which started in 1996. But by the time Tejada was
ready to release this album, A13 had changed direction towards a more club
type style, asking Tejada to make new tracks. As a result, all of these
tracks went unused, save for the album's first track, "Grip", which wound
up being released on the Lucid Dream single Pot Hole in 1996. None of the
others have seen the light of day since.
Maher Shalal Hash Baz - C'est La Dernière Chanson 2CD (K
Records) [KLP210CD] $14.75
"Tori Kudo, the conductor and band leader of Maher Shalal Hash Baz,
fuses
stray elements of pop, folk, jazz and experimental music into pieces of
candid musical gestures. C'est La Dernière Chanson is a double album of
songs composed by Kudo between 2005-2007. For the recordings, Kudo
assembled nine musicians from Japan and bunkered down for six days in St.
Pierre-Eglise, France. Bassoon, guitar, drums, trumpet, trombone, clarinet,
glass percussion, organ, rocks and sticks are expanded by a sophisticated
counter-repetition technique into an extensive tonal range of colors; the
effect is at turns serene, dissonant, enchanting, crisp, spacious and
maddeningly catchy. The future of music on Planet Earth. Listen closely,
please."
Malcolm Middleton - Waxing Gibbous CD (Full Time Hobby)
[FTH077] $12.00
The early consensus about Waxing Gibbous, the fifth solo album from
Falkirk, Scotland's MALCOLM MIDDLETON (ARAB STRAP), says it's his best yet.
Following last year's low-key Sleight of Heart, this is the album Middleton
was making while he took that diversion, composed from years' worth of
scribbles in notebooks that were "chiselled and connived into being songs."
A unique voice among singer-songwriters, Middleton's work balances a
fragile mix of self-doubt, humor, and wry observations on the human
condition. Few current singer songwriters can claim to be as prolific-or
focused-as Middleton in the past five years, averaging a release per year.
Waxing Gibbous was self-produced, though the album was recorded with the
help of a few friends: it features backing vocals from KING CREOSOTE and
THE PICTISH TRAIL, the piano skills of BARRY BURNS from MOGWAI, and the
honeyed vocals of JENNY REEVE. Early positive reviews from Mojo (4/5
rating), Q (4/5 rating), The Independent (4/5 rating), and Music Week
Recevied a 6.9 rating from Pitchfork. No exports outside North America
Mathias Kaden - Studio 10 CD (Vakant) [VA004CD] $16.00
This is the debut full-length release by Gera/Jena, Germany-based
minimalist, Mathias Kaden. About 2 years in the making, Studio 10 takes
Mathias Kaden's life-long work as DJ and producer, worldwide tours,
20-something years of listening and thinking, machines and people, and
wraps a bow around it all. Always taking his time with production, Mathias'
focus on quality over quantity continues to pay dividends, no matter the
state of the economy. Unique in many ways, Studio 10 is also unique for the
producer himself. Never before has Mathias incorporated into his music so
much hardware, field recordings, messages, and invited friends and
orchestral musicians to collaborate. Each track has a message waiting to be
interpreted, from the first track "Intro Ducing," borrowing from Bob
Marley, to the aptly-named "1981" (featuring vocals by Gjaezon),
significant in that it was the year of birth for the most important and
timeless instrument in Mathias' studio, the TR808. Similar to his Vakant
brethren, Mathias is the instrumentalist and performer, rather than the
programmer and sampler. A Fender Rhodes from jazz pal Lars Mäurer on
"Defender," Mathias's 1970s Lowrey organ played by Florian Schirmacher on
"Lowrey," violin by Claudia Ander-Donathand on "Re Menor," and flugelhorn
by Martin Rudloff on "Panic Stricken," all pull and push the music in
ever-expanding directions, but at the center, the 808 welds it all
together. In addition, vocalists (and lyricists) Ian Simmonds, Gjaezon, and
Tomomi Ukumori impart their talents to help articulate the messages that
pervade Studio 10. To call the album house is akin to referring to a 1982
Château Lafite-Rothschild as wine. Closer to Chicago than to anywhere else
in sound and in Mathias' heart, Studio 10 finds its home in more intimate
settings where its nuance, ideas, and depth can all come shining through.
Maurice Aymard & Pablo Bolivar - Galaktika Records Compilation
Mix 2CD (Galaktika Records) [GLK002CD] $22.25
"Here's is the first compilation of Galaktika Records, where we put
together the best label's tracks for the first time in two CDs. The first
one, mixed by Maurice Aymard with fresh material; and Pablo Bolivar who
reviews classic themes already included in the label's catalogue. This is a
great chance to listen again to such emblematic tracks as Garnica's
'Laderas' or Martinez's 'Whop Whop' to name a few, and of course, to take a
look at the latest acquisitions, of which we can find Patrick Zigon,
PauloOlarte or Gui Boratto among others. Two music sessions where we are
introduced to the Galaktika Record's world which with five years in the
scene, has been established as one of the most important labels from the
Catalonian landscape."
Merzbow - 13 Japanese Birds Vol 8: Kokuchou CD (Important)
[IMPREC261] $13.00
RELEASE DATE: 08-25-2009
Merzbow's 13 Japanese Birds is a 13 month series of releases inspired
by
Olivier Messaien's Catalogue D'Oiseaux. Beginning in January 2009 one
volume of 13 Japanese Birds will be released each month. The 13th and final
volume will be released January 2010. Each volume will be a one time
pressing of 1000 copies. Available from Important Records is a deluxe hand
made numbered bamboo box to hold the 13 cd collection. Cover art by Jenny
Akita.
Morris Bailey - The Philly Sound You Never Heard Volume One CD
(Distortions Records) [DR013CD] $11.25
"Contrary to popular belief, there were many producers before Gamble &
Huff
who helped create and define what is known as the Philly Sound. One such
producer who never got any recognition until now is Morris Bailey. Includes
8-page booklet with photos and fact-filled information."
Morris Bailey - The Philly Sound You Never Heard Volume Two CD
(Distortions Records) [DR014CD] $11.25
Volume two, Philly Soul Girls.
Nurses - Apple's Acre CD (Dead Oceans) [DOC029] $13.25
To immerse yourself in NURSES' Apple's Acre is to delight in a certain
mental unraveling. These are songs where the vulnerability of pop with its
heart on its sleeve engages in a double-dutch jumprope match with the
euphoric surrender-to-the-weird that is essential to psychedelia. And
Nurses is a band that scavenges beauty and wonder, uncovering Technicolor
where others see somber hues. Their off-kilter psych-pop is driven by
ever-swelling vocal harmonies, adventurous electronics, some serious
wheelin' and dealin' on the Rhodes piano, and the kind of new-primitivist
percussion that may or may not involve a standard drum kit. Apple's Acre is
a record full of dysfunctional, hushed love, laced with elegance and grace
and without angst and regret. But the plain courage of their songs is the
secret ingredient that's already turning heads and blowing minds all over
the Northwest-and if you think about it, in pop music, courage is always at
a premium. Fans of Yeasayer, Deerhoof, Danielson and wild minded pop music
should pay close attention.
On
Ka'a Davis - Djoukoujou CD (Tzadik) [TZ7411] $14.50
"Raw, wild and untainted, this is a new world envisioned, produced and
realized by the mystical figure On Ka'a Davis. Drawing inspiration from the
outer realms of blackness, On Ka'a channels Sun Ra, P-Funk, Hendrix, Fela
Kuti and more into the squat politics of the East Village basement jam.
Accompanied by a wild array of stylish zanies, freedom rings with poetry,
polyrhythmic complexity and primal passions. Another world never imagined
possible from the undying, ever growing counter culture crucible of
Downtown New York."
Oorutaichi - Drifting My Folklore CD (Okimi) [OKIMI-O12]
$16.25
RELEASE DATE: 08-10-2009
This is the second album by Oorutaichi. Every aspect of production,
from
composition, recording to mix was done by the artist himself. His
unpredictable melody lines and backing choruses that are sung entirely with
words invented by him, and the free-spirited electronic sound that is based
on various styles of beats that have been digested within himself have
created a truly unique tropicalism, a kind of folk music of the "Isle of
Oorutaichi."
This is a new dance music that can be compared to the
music of the likes of Animal Collective, M.I.A. and the Dirty Projectors,
who have been delivering new styles and ideas by embracing primitive
indigeneity and ethnicity.
Peter Broderick - Falling From Trees CD (Western Vinyl)
[WEST062CD] $10.25
"Peter Broderick's Music for Falling From Trees, is a 29 minute piece,
in
seven sections, created for a contemporary dance by London's Adrienne Hart.
Adrienne told Peter she was looking for a score of piano and strings, so he
left the guitar and his voice aside and focused entirely on those two
timbres. The dance tells the story of a man in a psychiatric hospital, and
his struggle to maintain his identity. Beautifully utilizing piano and
strings, the music evokes a melancholic and playful narrative."
Pictureplane - Dark Rift CD (Lovepump United) [LPU029]
$12.25
Grimy synths, broken beats, and bucolic vocals collide somewhere
between
early '90s house music and the gnarly soundscapes of Black Dice to forge a
sound that's wholly unique and endlessly exciting. It's exceedingly rare to
find dance music that transcends the cold and robotic, but on Dark Rift,
PICTUREPLANE, does just that: churning out intricate electronic jams out of
his Denver bedroom. It feels at once personal and cosmically expansive.
Prydwyn - Solitude Owes Me A Smile CD (Hand / Eye) [H/E044]
$13.75
RELEASE DATE: 08-11-2009
***From the detailed acoustic touches he added for Tom Rapp (Pearls
Before
Swine); to the wonderful harmonies he makes for Stone Breath; to the
poignant songwriting and arrangements he did for Green Crown-all of this
and more graces the timely and timeless new album. Here we get the benefit
of all those years experience and patience as PRYDWN distills the best of
what he does with others into a point focused by his own vision.
Reigning Sound - Love And Curses CD (In The Red) [ITR155]
$12.00
It's been five years since GREG CARTWRIGHT's REIGNING SOUND dropped
their
last full-length studio album, Too Much Guitar. Not that Cartwright has
been resting on his laurels. The Reigning Sound backed Shangri-La Mary
Weiss on her critically acclaimed comeback album, Dangerous Game, which was
produced and largely written by Cartwright. The band performed with Weiss
on tour, including an appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
Cartwright also produced, penned songs for, and played in The Detroit
Cobras for a spell. All the while, the Reigning Sound toured the US on and
off and released a couple of live albums, yet never managed to get into the
studio to record. All the while, Cartwright stockpiled loads of new tunes.
Finally, late last year, the band entered Ardent Studios in Memphis and
laid down a bunch of songs. Some months later, they went into Echo Mountain
Studios in North Carolina and recorded a bunch more. In the end, the band
had more than enough for two albums, and carefully whittled it down to the
cream of the musical crop. Love and Curses (title comes from Memphis TV
horror host Sivad) is a return to the sound and style of the Reigning
Sound's incredible Time Bomb High School. The band once again features a
full-time keyboardist, DAVE AMELS, and has jettisoned the lo-fi approach
used on Too Much Guitar in favor of a bigger, warmer studio sound. As with
Time Bomb High School, Love and Curses strikes a balance between soulful
rockers and beautiful ballads. The results are a rock 'n' roll album as
near to perfection as any one is likely to hear this year. LP version to be
released 8/25/2009.
Robert Pollard - Elephant Jokes CD (GBV Inc) [GBVI06]
$13.25
"I'm sick and tired of all you backward-looking crybabies. You know who
you
are: 'If only it were 1994...' 1994? Were you even alive then? How alive?
"Not as alive as ROBERT POLLARD is right now-working the boards, finding
the words still jump when he says jump and the guitar chimes when he forms
the chords on the six-string with his honest-to-God DIY, home-made
calluses. A clutch of these songs started out live in the studio, with Mr.
Pollard on guitar, and they buzz with the charge of on-the-spot generation.
All the secret ingredients go into the mix-even Mr. P's brother, the
estimable outside shooter JIMMY POLLARD, returns to tweak a few knobs-and
the result is music that comes alive with that sui generis Dayton grit and
sparkle)."-Marc Woodworth, author, Bee Thousand (33 1/3 Press)
Rodrigo Amado, Kent Kessler & Paal Nilssen-Love - The Abstract
Truth CD (European Echoes) [EE003CD] $16.00
Following 2006's Teatro, his first internationally-acclaimed trio
recording
with North American double-bassist Kent Kessler and Norwegian drummer Paal
Nilssen-Love, Portuguese sax player Rodrigo Amado presents The Abstract
Truth on his very own European Echoes imprint. The album works as an homage
to Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico, while nodding to the legendary
Oliver Nelson recording of the same name -- using improvisation as a
complex and demanding discipline that reveals all of what a musician is and
can become. Amado is one of the top improvisers in Portugal. Followers of
his work refer to him as an original player able to balance the dynamics
and intense energy of free-playing with a distinct melodic sense that
brings to mind the great tradition of the instrument, from Parker to
Rollins. Kessler and Nilssen-Love are two of the most in-demand and
sought-after improvisers on the scene, working with the likes of Peter
Brötzmann (both are members of the acclaimed Brötzmann Tentet), Ken
Vandermark, Joe McPhee, Evan Parker, Mats Gustafsson and Fred Anderson,
amongst many others.
Roland Kovac New Set - Love That CD (Garden Of Delights) [072]
$19.25
After The Master Said (1971), Love That (1972) was the second
progressive
longplayer of the ROLAND KOVAC NEW SET, again instrumental and with jazzy
touches, playful organ solos and wild guitars, very much in the mood of the
time. Lovers of The Master Said will not be disappointed by Love That.
Tracks from this album appeared on both volumes of the classic compilations
The Psychedelic Salvage Company.
Royal Chord - Good Fight CD (Supply And Demand Music) [SAD004]
$12.00
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, TAMMY HAIDER and ELIZA HISCOX make
the
music of ROYAL CHORD. Starting out in 2001 playing dusty alt-country with a
crew that at one point swelled up to eight members, Tammy and Eliza now
play primarily as a duo, replacing guitars with keyboards and band members
with chopped drum breaks and sequenced bass lines. Their new record, The
Good Fight, sees them combine electronics with their neurotic and
melancholic sensibility, delivering songs that range from summer pop to
funereal folk.
Scratch Perverts - Beatdown CD (Fabric) [FABRIC1009CD]
$16.50
"The Scratch Perverts three members -- Prime Cuts, Tony Vegas and Plus
One
-- are collectively three of the greatest DJs the UK has ever produced, and
the best turntablists hip hop has ever known. The London-based,
world-renowned DJ collective are all about invention, humour, progression,
entertainment, generosity, and jaw-dropping talent. Since forming in 1996,
the Scratch Perverts have become synonymous with battle DJing and hip hop.
The trio have achieved widespread acclaim and won countless awards and
titles, including two consecutive World DMC Team titles, Plus One's World
DMC Champion and World Vestax Champion titles, Prime Cut's 1999 and 2000
World ITF Scratching crowns. Most recently, the Scratch Perverts continue
to hold down their residency at Fabric, as well as forever touring around
the globe. There's no denying a Scratch Pervert set -- untamed, raucous
energy coupled with mind-bogging skills and selections. Additionally, the
three Perverts have taken their DJ skills and applied it to production,
most notably creating 2004's energetic 'Come Get It' (with Dynamite MC) and
the Supercharged hit 'Stand By' in 2007. 'Stand By' originally featured on
Lucozade's Summer 2006/World Cup TV campaign to widespread acclaim and will
once again be sound tracking Lucozade's spring and summer TV campaign this
year. Individually, they each have their own interests and accomplishments,
dabbling across various projects and genres. Most notably, Plus One has
started working with Beni G (from the famed scratch duo Mixologists) as
Jackbeats, a hugely popular electro project -- and Prime Cuts has kept busy
with various remix projects, including a slamming rendition of the Foreign
Beggars' 'Hit That Gash.'"
Shevalreq - Siege Of Albraca CD (Hekaloth) [HEKA005] $15.00
The Siege of Albraca is a follow up to SHEVALREQ's first release
Tournament
at Constantinople. Like the first album the music is a fusion of World
Music, Metal and Classical Orchestral, with all the instrumental sounds
created on guitar synthesizer. It continues the epic tale adapted from
MATTEO BOLARDO's 16th Century Medieval poem, "Orlando Inamorato," bringing
it to something of a conclusion.
Sian Alice Group - Troubled, Shaken, Etc. CD (Social Registry)
[TSR074] $13.25
SIAN ALICE GROUP-a collective of UK musicians are back with their
sophomore
album, Troubled, Shaken Etc. The band hones in on a genre-busting
combination of organic improvisation, process-driven experimentation and
the focused strength earned from a year of extensive traveling and touring
the world together. You get your minimalist trances, electronic
experimentation, techno thump, jazz motifs and Eastern music tropes in a
joyous and complete listening experience. It's a snapshot (or, more
closely, a yearbook) from an eventful 2008 that is more raw, emotional and
loud than anything they've released thus far.
Silkie - City Limits Volume 1 3x^12 inch CD (Deep Medi Musik)
[MEDI002LP] $32.00
"12" vinyl x 3 pressed on 180 gram black vinyl in full colour. Gatefold
sleeve. DEEP Medi Musik are proud to present the debut album from one of
dubstep's most exciting artists: Silkie. Hailing from west London, City
Limits Volume One is glorious explosion of physical energy and concentrated
emotion. DEEP Medi is the burgeoning stable of dubstep pioneer, Mala
(Digital Mystikz/DMZ). The combination of impassioned melodies, ruff London
bass, wonky synth and jungle-esque flourishes on City Limits Volume One
have made Silkie and his Anti Social Entertainment camp mainstays of the
biggest and most influential venues in dubstep, like Fwd>>, DMZ London &
Leeds, as well as London's leading station Rinse FM. The album is the
culmination of eight years hard work: Silkie began producing at 15 while
still at school. He's now seeing the fruits of his labour with DJ bookings
both across the UK and worldwide. Through his emotive production vision,
he's long since exploded beyond his own personal City Limits."
Skygreen Leopards, The - Gorgeous Johnny CD (Jagjaguwar)
[JAG147CD] $13.50
"It's been 8 years since the first The Skygreen Leopards' record was
released. Since then the boys have maintained their singular aesthetic
while managing to dabble with faux-folk, avant garde pop, reverb-drenched
lo-fi psychedelia, plastic country and blurry ballads. This latest effort
finds them collaborating with Jason Quever (Papercuts) to create a
melancholy world overflowing with itinerant dandies, urban streets,
suburban teens, and more girls' names than I care to count, all set to
melodic shuffles featuring harmonies, frail piano, and romantic guitars. As
always with the Leopards the rhythms refuse to be bridled, the boys resist
the urge to jam, and they won't ever learn to sing properly. This will
frustrate the expectations of some. Others will find a sweet shadowy hiding
place in these songs -- 3 minutes to hang out with girls who race horses,
boys who never learned to dance, and a dirty uncle who steals your
cigarettes."
Social Junk - Born Into It CD (Digitalis) [ACE018] $11.00
SOCIAL JUNK have blasted through walls, East and West, over the past
few
years cranking out some serious sparklers along the way. Now after dropping
a megaslice of deliciousness on Not Not Fun last year, this duo follow it
up with a journey through the mother Earth canal. Born Into It stretches
across the lands with thudding percussion and hypno synth excursions. Waves
of swirling vocals from both HEATHER YOUNG and NOAH ANTHONY. You may have
just been born, but stretch those wings baby because it's time to f***ing
fly.
Solo Andata - Solo Andata CD (12k) [12K1056] $12.25
RELEASE DATE: 09-08-2009
12k presents Australian duo Solo Andata along with their second album,
self-titled. Translated literally from the Italian as "one way", Solo
Andata portrays the theme of a one-way journey that moves from (and
represents a thread between) water and land, fluid/stasis, cold/hot.
Following Solo Andata's debut album Fyris Swan (Hefty, 2006) and their 12k
inception on Live in Melbourne, Solo Andata presents us with an ambient
affair, with dark drones coupled with ethereal sonic environments.
It could be said that Solo Andata is carefully sequenced to a narrative structure: beginning on boat in the cold, arctic night of "Ablation," and then ending on foot in the hot wilderness of "Woods, Flesh, Bone." However, concepts and narratives that seem clear to the artists are often left oblique to the listeners. This is perhaps why Solo Andata represented this narrative in a strict sense by recording what the titles literally refer to. For example, "Woods Flesh, Bone" presents us with sweltering woodlands, the sound of a fresh carcass being torn apart and the clattering of bones. The same can be said of "Hydraulic Fluctuations," "Canal Rocks," "Ablation" and "In the Light Storming." These organic sources, then, help tie music and concept together.
Solo Andata utilizes very little, if any,
electronic instruments. Acoustic guitar, piano, cello and the natural
resonances of organic materials (usually by way of a violin bow, pluck, or
home-made contraption) become their main instruments, and as their live
shows often attest to, Solo Andata can turn almost any object into an
instrument capable of producing beautiful, other-worldly music.
Solo Andata - Look For Me Here CDS (12k) [12K2014] $6.25
RELEASE DATE: 09-08-2009
Look For Me Here is Solo Andata's accompanying single to their
self-titled,
full-length 12k album (12k1056) which, in addition to Solo Andata's album
mix, includes two exquisite remixes from Japanese legend Ryuichi Sakamoto
and 12k visionary Giuseppe Ielasi.
With "Chorale", Sakamoto progressively transforms Solo Andata's rich and bittersweet work of electroacoustics into a vast and textured landscape of enchanting electronics which, at times, is beautifully bewitching. Giuseppe Ielasi, on the other hand, presents us with a luscious array of melodic skittering that altogether forms an elegant and harmonious whole.
Packaged in a
clear, round CD case and printed on a half-clear "fan" CD, Look For Me Here
is limited to only 500 copies for the world.
Speech Debelle - Speech Therapy CD (Big Dada) [BD137CD]
$15.25
"Speech's sound has been received as urban pop, and she's drawn
comparisons
to Lily Allen and been called the lovechild of Biggie Smalls and Joanna
Newsome. The childlike quality of her voice belies her often dark lyrical
subject matter. The oldest song on here is called 'Finish This Album.' It
was the tune she first played when she visited Big Dada almost five years
ago. Speech is both young and old beyond her years. At the age of 25 her
fragile voice can make her sound like a teenager, but she's packed in
enough experience to last most people forever."
Tim
Carroll - All Kinds Of Pain CD (Gulcher) [GULCHER701] $10.25
TIM CARROLL, a product of rural Indiana, releases his sixth record, All
Kinds Of Pain. As a guitar player in the '70's cult punk band, THE GIZMOS,
Tim displayed his bare-bones rock ethic and polished it in the '80's with a
New York City bar band, THE BLUE CHIEFTANS. A Nashville transplant since
1993, Tim has had songs recorded by John Prine, Asleep At The Wheel,
BR-549, Robbie Fulks, Kasey Chambers, Elizabeth Cook, Bare Jr., Sunny
Sweeney, Sonny Burgess and others. In 1995, he made the cover of Billboard
magazine in an article about Nashville's burgeoning alt-country music
scene. In 1996, Tim was nominated for a Nashville Music Award in the
category of Best Unsigned Artist. In 1997 he signed a deal with Sire
Records and began working with producer Andy Paley. In 1999, Carroll had
two of his Sire recordings on major motion picture soundtracks. Since 2000,
Tim has appeared on The Grand Ole Opry literally hundreds of times as
sideman to his wife, Americana chanteuse and Sirius Radio host ELIZABETH
COOK. He's toured in Japan, England, Scotland, Wales, France, Norway,
Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, and Korea.
TV
Ghost - Cold Fish CD (In The Red) [ITR174] $12.00
In The Red is proud to announce the debut full-length album from
Lafayette,
Indiana, creepers TV GHOST-a band who ushers in a vile and squalid new
disposition to ugly art punk and carves out a black hole of pestilence that
will delight its sufferers to no end. If one can swim through the murky
grime long enough to let one's frazzled senses adjust, it's clear how
effectively TV Ghost incorporates the licentious nuances of The Cramps'
earliest scuzz, no wave's cacophony, and Suicide's terrifying throb
alongside cavernous bellows from the depths of the third layer of hell.
With their 7-inch and 12-inch EP on Die Stasi Records as evidence of their
shambolic songwriting and inhuman creativity within rock's static-laden
low-end sound spectrum, TV Ghost now have aligned their belligerence with
In The Red and delivered Cold Fish-ten tracks of a teeth-shattering,
unhinged, and thoroughly penetrating version of what's lurking in punk's
darkest corners. On tour now.
Vagusnerve - Lo Pan CD (Utech Records) [UR028CD] $15.25
"The lo pan is an ancient, intricate compass used in the practice of
traditional Chinese feng shui and is sometimes referred to as 'the universe
on a plate.' A lo pan consists of two parts - a square wooden base into
which is fitted a freely rotating saucer-shaped disk. In the centre of the
disk is a small depression containing a magnetized needle. Between the
needle and the edge of the disk are engraved several concentric rings, each
divided into sectors containing different sets of Chinese characters. The
relationship between this physical object and the music you hear on this
album was inspired by a dream that Li Jianhong (guitar) had in June 2006.
In his dream he came to a clearing in a dark forest which contained a huge
lo pan, as big as a table. Convinced that the device could provide a way to
summon UFOs, he lay down on the lo pan and began to rotate around the
various symbols on the concentric rings. As he did so, a vast array of UFOs
appeared above the forest. For Li Jianhong then, the lo pan represents a
form of ancient knowledge that can be used to unlock the secrets of the
universe. His collaborator in VagusNerve, Vavabond (laptop), reads the lo
pan in a slightly different way. For her, it is a device which can be used
to discover a balance between the individual and the cosmos, by aligning
personal energy with the cosmic. This idea of balance runs through the
music as it pulses, shifts and resonates freely, seeking to create and then
destroy structures of equilibrium. Photography by Vavabond. Typography and
drawing by Li Jianhong. Text by Alan Cummings. Edition of 500."
Various Artists - Zelphabet H CD (Zelphabet) [H01] $10.00
The eighth in Zelphabet's new series of 26 alphabetically oriented
compilations of noise. Volume H makes its mark with cuts from heavyweights
HANATARASH, HATERS, HALALCHEMISTS, and HOWARD STELZER.
Weasel Walter - Apocalyptik Paranoia CD (ugEXPLODE) [UG31]
$12.75
A brand new helping of studio material by notorious drummer WEASEL
WALTER
featuring various formations of an all-star cast of malcontents including
HENRY KAISER, FRED LONBERG-HOLM, PETER EVANS, GREG KELLEY and FORBES
GRAHAM. There's an icy, ominous chill to this set of forceful and focused
improvisations-this just might be the "Battles of the North" of free music
with its hard, frostbitten arctic sheen. The eight tracks here range from
painterly, agitated all-acoustic improvisation to explosive,
electronics-wracked all-out noise onslaughts. A truly dynamic offering of
balls-out abstraction with the intensity and quality you expect from Weasel
and co. There are definitely some surprises here resulting from the largely
unprecedented mixture of unique musical personalities.
Willie Mitchell - Ooh Baby, You Turn Me On CD (Fat Possum)
[FPH1178] $12.00
REISSUED!!! "This album, which was repackaged and retitled Soul
Serenade a
year after its original release, catches WILLIE MITCHELL in superb form,
not only as an arranger but as a leader fronting a first-rate ensemble.
Apart from a somewhat predictable chorus on 'Soulfinger,' everything here
has some subtlety in its presentation-details in the arrangements that
surprise on repeated listening, and a crispness in the recording (this is
some of the best-sounding stereo soul music of its period) that makes the
repeated listening fun. The material ranges from new Mitchell-authored
instrumentals to covers of standards such as 'Slippin' and Slidin'' and
'Sunny' (which could've been considered for a double-A-sided single, and
the latter might've just placed Mitchell onto the easy listening charts
without compromising his sound; it's that good). The playing by guitarist
TEENIE HODGES is worth the price of admission and gets put in the spotlight
surprisingly often, considering the abundance of first-rate reed and horn
talent on hand"-Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

Bloody Panda - Summon DVD+CD (Profound Lore) [PFL048]
$13.25
The follow-up to their acclaimed Pheromone, Summon takes the nightmare
BLOODY PANDA first explored on their split LP with experimentalists Kayo
Dot even further into the depths. The album is a disturbing, cinematic
vision of terror and frightening depravity that lurks within the dark
chambers of doom metal horror. Front-woman YOSHIKO OHARA lifts Bloody
Panda to a chilling new plateau with her death-defying wails, a cross
between the lamenting and the operatic. Her rapturous vocal delivery is
underpinned by the monolithic, dirge-like rhythm section that gives this
beast its foundation. Ohara, an accomplished visual artist, is also
responsible for the artwork that graces the cover. Summon comes as a
dual-disc set that includes a DVD with an abstract visual interpretation of
the 20-plus minute track "Miserere." Filmed in Brooklyn, New York, and
Jaliluhur Dam, Indonesia, this dark and mysterious visual companion
features renowned Butoh dancer YUKO KASEKI. For fans of Sunn 0))),

Ann
Peebles - Handwriting Is On The Wall CD (Fat Possum) [FPH1168] $12.00
"If This Is Heaven, ANN PEEBLES' 1977 attempt to merge her Southern
soul
influences with the disco grooves that were dominating the airwaves and the
charts, proved to be a commercial disappointment, and for her next album,
Peebles and longtime producer WILLIE MITCHELL took a grand step backwards.
Released in 1979, The Handwriting is on the Wall boasted some high-powered
funk backdrops, but for the most part the album finds Peebles taking on a
set of straight-ahead soul numbers in which she was usually either taking a
man away from some woman who didn't know how to hold on to him, or was
warning the ladies why they should stay away from her significant other.
Willie Mitchell pairs Peebles up with some full-bodied soul and funk
arrangements for these songs, and while unfortunately most of the great Hi
Rhythm Section were unavailable for this record, the players on board do
fine work, even if the groove lacks the ineffable touch of Peebles' finest
work. The Handwriting is on the Wall was Ann Peebles' last album for Hi,
and the last new set she would release until 1988, but it captures one of
the great R&B singers of the 1970s doing what she does best, and here she
bows out on a high point."-Mark Deming, All Music Guide
Ann
Peebles - If This Is Heaven CD (Fat Possum) [FPH1176] $12.00
REISSUED!!! By 1977, straight-ahead Southern soul had stopped selling
in
big numbers and disco had taken over the R&B market, and like many of her
peers, soul diva ANN PEEBLES tried to make the best of matters by turning
up the groove quotient on her album of that year, If This Is Heaven.
Peebles, one of the best and most underrated soul songbirds of the 1970s,
had already demonstrated she could work wonders with a dance-friendly track
on her previous set, 1975's Tellin' It, and If This Is Heaven's first two
cuts, 'A Good Day for Lovin'' and the title number, find her and producer
WILLIE MITCHELL leaning toward disco while still leaving a taste of their
classic-style Memphis groove in the mix, and if HOWARD GRIMES'
four-on-the-floor drumming dates these tracks a bit, Peebles still sings
her tales of love both good and bad with the passion, force, and clarity
that made her a legend."-Mark Deming, All Music Guide
Eliane Radigue - Vice Versa, etc. CD (Important) [IMPREC259]
$14.50
RELEASE DATE: 08-25-2009
Includes liner notes & archival photographs. 1970 was an important year
in
Eliane Radigue's musical life since it was the year just before she
acquired her ARP 2500 synthesizer. Since 1967, she had been using the
feedback as a material; feedback from two tape recorders reworked through
intensive studio techniques: slowing down, alteration, superimposition,
montage.
In 1970, the last year she dedicated to feedback, several milestone pieces saw the light of day: Omnht, a wonderful sound installation for three out-of-phase tape loops and wall-mounted loudspeakers; the theoretical setting of Labyrinthe Sonore (eventually premiered at Mills College in 1998 in collaboration with Pauline Oliveros, Maggie Payne and William Winant, amongst others); Opus 17, one of her first compositions in fixed duration (according to Rhys Chatham, a decisive piece that would change his own compositional career); and Vice-Versa, etcâ~@¦, which appears to be her very last feedback loop composition.
Vice-Versa, etcâ~@¦ was conceived as a sound installation setting similar to S=a=b=a+b. A single magnetic tape can be played at any speed, a stereo tape of which allows three playings: left channel alone, right channel alone, left and right channels together. These different channels can be overlapped/crossed over as much as possible, at any speed. Thus the piece reveals itself in its whole dimension, its infinite grace.
In its content, the piece is the most minimal that Eliane Radigue has ever composed. Feedback is horizontally sustained, time is suspended, vibrating with organic and subtle pulsations. The fastest playthrough, in just 2'42", weaves a graceful continuum of uncanny depth, somewhere between the sonority of feedback and a glass harmonica. Played slowly, at 13'41", it takes us into an universe of low frequency vibrations felt as much by the guts, the ribcage and the whole body as by the eardrum: the signature sound of Eliane Radigue. Between these two extremes, many delicate shadings/variations appear simply through speed modulation.
What is striking about this work, which may arguably be one of Radigue's most important compositions, is the extraordinary quality of the tones obtained from such a rudimentary material. It is hard to believe that the composer was yet to begin working on her ARP, since the sonorities heard on Vice-Versa, etcâ~@¦ are surprisingly similar to those she would go on to produce with her synthesizer.
Vice-Versa, etcâ~@¦ is a minimal work which possesses an infinity of possible variations, a secret object containing the seeds of the oeuvre to come, and a discreet turning point linking the composer's two important working phases, an extremely subtle cross-fade between her feedback loop period to her ARP period.
Originally, only ten signed and numbered copies of this little boxset
containing a magnetic tape and a handwritten note were released - needless
to say this is a work that has been nearly forgotten! We have decided to
reissue this object as a double CD, with the tape played respectively
forwards and backwards, at four different speeds, corresponding to the
standards of the tape recorders of the time. This will allow dedicated
listeners to experiment with simultaneous playback of the work's different
versions, recreating the conditions of the original installation. For
lazier listeners, a simple playthrough provides complete satisfaction, a
listening experience that loses itself in the ineffable and discreet beauty
of these four variations.
Eliane Radigue - Triptych CD (Important) [IMPREC260] $13.00
RELEASE DATE: 08-25-2009
Includes liner notes & archival photographs. On the suggestion of
Robert
Ashley, Douglas Dunn commissioned this piece from Eliane Radigue for
choreography. Only the first part of Triptych was staged at the premiere at
the Dancehall/Theatre of Nancy on February 27 1978. Recorded in the
composer's studio in Paris.
After the premiere of Adnos I in San Francisco in 1974, a group of French students introduced Eliane Radigue to Tibetan Buddhism. When she returned to Paris, she began to explore this spirituality in depth, which slowed her musical production up until 1978. Triptych marks her return to composition, and draws its inspiration from "the spirit of the fundamental elements", water, air, fire, earth....Eliane Radigue likes to add that this has often been useful to her in her moments of research and transitions.
This three-part composition, with its
great humility and contemplative simplicity, heralded a new period of work
and was the first in a series of masterpieces inspired by Tibetan Buddhism:
Adnos II (1980), Adnos III (1981), Songs of Milarepa (1983) - with the
voices of Lama Kunga Rinpoche and Robert Ashley -, "Jetsun Mila" (1986),
as
well as the Trilogy of Death: Kyema (1988), Kailasha (1991) and Koume
(1993). Archival images included in the accompanying booklet.
Endle St. Cloud - Thank You Very Much CD (Snapper) [SNAX609CD]
$16.50
"Formed in Texas in 1968 by Alan Melinger (ex Iguanas), aka Endle St
Cloud,
David F Potter (ex East Side Kids) and Peter Black (Lost And Found), the
group released their debut single under the name Endle St Cloud In The
Rain. A little later, prior to recording this album, James Harrell, also
from Lost & Found, joined. So, not surprisingly, the Lost & Found
influence
was pretty evident, with two of the album's original tracks having been
released by Lost & Found as their final International Artists single. Most
of the album's songs have a spoken introduction over a piano backing (each
in a very different style ), whilst the music itself ranges from good time
blues to country rock with a leaning towards the heavy, not unlike that of
their West Coast contemporaries Moby Grape. Theirs was the last album to
be
released by International Artists and the group later metamorphosed into
Porter St Cloud."
Joy Unlimited - Schmetterlinge + 4 Bonus Tracks CD (Garden Of
Delights) [111] $19.25
Schmetterlinge ("Butterflies"), JOY UNLIMITED's second LP, was
released in
1971 on the Pilz label and has been long regarded as their peak effort.
German progressive featuring the powerful vocals of pre-stardom JOY
FLEMING, Bonus tracks include a track recorded at SWF, their contribution
to the Heavy Christmas collection, and both sides of their fourth 7-inch.
O.V. Wright - Bottom Line CD (Fat Possum) [FPH1167] $12.00
REISSUED!!! Second in a series of three Hi studio albums, O.V. WRIGHT
was
finally allowed to record for Willie Mitchell's own label, since his
former
employer, Don Robey, had sold Backbeat to ABC in 1973. As was the case
with
Al Green, Mitchell had developed a longtime friendship with Wright,
overseeing most of his Backbeat single sides and albums. Come the end of
the '70s the famous Hi sound started to lose a little of its tightness,
but
this is fairly overcome by Wright's exceptional vocal qualities. The
Bottom
Line wasn't crafted with the same session men as it's predecessor. Mostly
made up of ballads, the single 'I Don't Do Windows' stands apart as the
only up-tempo exception."-Quint Kik, All Music Guide
Papa Zoot Band - Last Concert CD (Long Hair) [LHC078CD]
$22.75
"Great lost band from Frankfurt, Germany. In 1973/1974, Papa Zoot Band
played all over Germany, mainly in clubs but also on festivals (German Pop
Meeting 1st and 2nd February 1974 in Essen, Grugahalle). Lutz Sommer
guitar, Robby Matthes bass, voc, Reinhard 'Tammy' Grohe organ(Ex-Nosferatu
!) and Christian Engel drums, voc. played mainly long tracks, very melodic
but also with a sense of drama comparable to Nektar, Eloy, Jane or Pink
Floyd. Outstanding 20 minutes title 'Fly away' could be a long track by
Pink Floyd of the Meddle/Wish You Were Here/Animals-era without being an
imitation. The other two long tracks 'I Wish' (9 minutes) and 'Friendship
or Love' (11 minutes) also show throughout fantastic guitar and organ work
(as you know it from Nosferatu album). Unbelievable that Papa Zoot Band
never made an album. 4 years after they called it a day, Papa Zoot Band
played in early 1978 a sole reunion concert at there basic venue
'Sinkkasten' in Frankfurt. This concert, which had the same playlist as
their performance on German Pop Meeting 1974, proved again, that their
music never lost its magic. This great performance was taped from the
soundboard and has a superb sound quality. As bonus tracks there are two
cover versions of a great Eric Burdon song 'When I was Young' in a 9
minutes psychedelic version and the classic 'Tobacco Road' with former
bandleader and great singer Ernst Nadler (nickname: Papa Zoot) who left
Papa Zoot Band in early 1973. CD comes with comprehensive booklet, photos
from their performance at the German Pop Meeting, 1974 (a. o. with Guru
Guru, Kraan, Nektar, Eloy). Digitally remastered. Secret tip and a must
have for all lovers of the genre."
Pentwater - Pentwater CD (Beef) [BEEF001] $13.25
A 2003 band-released reissue of 1978 progressive from Illinois,
remixed and
remastered from the original analog tapes. "This album starts with the
completely insane 'Frustration Mass', where the singer goes totally off
the
deep end. It gives hope that this will be the kind of highly creative
weirdness that gives prog a good name, but the rest of the album is a bit
more typical of the genre, with complex song structures, lots of time
signatures, and some spacy instrumentals. There are plenty of good and
highly creative moments here, from the mesmerizing guitar riffs on 'Memo'
to the innovative dual vocal lines of 'Orphan Girl,' and there are a
number
of highly melodic songs as well." (The Acid Archives)
Roland Kovac New Set - Master Said CD (Garden Of Delights)
[065] $19.25
THE ROLAND KOVAC NEW SET released several instrumental LPs on the
Selected
Sound "library" label from Hamburg, the second and third of which, The
Master Said (1971) and Love That (1972), are good progressive rock with a
clear emphasis on jazz. The line-up on The Master Said consisted of top
musicians: MASTER ROLAND KOVAC himself had obtained his doctorate in music
as early as 1952 and written numerous classical works and soundtracks.
Guitarist SIEGFRIED SCHWAB had just become famous at that time by working
with ET CETERA and other groups and shows his brilliance on this LP with
his fuzz guitar. Drummer CHARLY ANTOLINI had already been in business for
many years and is still first choice on the jazz scene today. The fourth
member was FRANZ LOeFFLER on bass, who had already released several guitar
LPs in the 1960s.
Soul Junk - 1960 CD (Sounds Familyre) [SF22] $13.25
"It's only fitting that for SOUL-JUNK's auspicious 1960 release, the
stylistically dizzying San Diego-based band has returned to the comfy
confines of Sounds Familyre. Although repeatedly, massively, fervently
rocking out more often than any Soul-Junk record in years, 1960's
crystalline/inventively fuzzified electric guitars and pounding drums tell
only part of the sound-story. Having enlisted over a dozen S-J members
through the years, vocalist-guitarist GALAXY is joined by eight others
here
for a suitably large-scale Soul-Junk ensemble. Includes vocal
contributions
from DANIELSON FAMILE ringleader DANIEL SMITH, his wife ELIN SMITH and
father LENNY SMITH in singing out/harmonizing along."

Meringue. These tracks mark the birth of an urban Jamaican musical style
and featured well known Mento artist such as Lord Tanomo, Count Lasher &
Count Sticky as well as new boy Laurel Aitken, whose blending of mento
with
JA Gospel & U.S. R'n'B created a whole new style of Jamaican music: his
'Boogie in my Bones' for Chris Blackwell's fledging Island records was a
reworking of his Caribou 'Aitken's Boogie.' The Downbeat label issued
Sound
Systems classic of U.S. R'n'B cut over the previous few years. This 2CD

Vassilis Tsitsanis - Rembetika 4: The Postwar Years 1946 -
1954 CD Box (JSP Records) [JSP77123CD] $25.75
"Vassilis Tsitsanis was the key figure in Rembetika, the music that is
popularly named as 'Greek Blues' - a vibrant and funky folk music of the
common man that is for both dancing and rebellion. The previous JSP
Rembetika box sets have brought a new standard to the re-issue of this
music and brought it to a brand new market. This four CD set presents the
complete picture."

Things you should know about this album:
1) The name of the band is Wheedle's Groove. 2) The name of the album is Kearney Barton. 3) Most of the performers are in their 60s. 4) It grew out of an urge to recreate magic.
Magic that could only have been seen on a small stage, in a packed theatre, in August of 2004. That was when Light In The Attic released a landmark compilation called Wheedle's Groove: Seattle's Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-75, and to celebrate brought together many of those original Seattle funk and soul artists for a one-night-only reunion concert, led by young blood music director and KEXP DJ Johnny Horn, and featuring Robbie Hill, Overton Berry, Patrinell Staten, Ron Buford, and KYAC's very own #1 boss-jock Robert Nesbitt. The following day, still on a high from the show, LITA, Horn, DJ Mr. Supreme, and lead-producer Dynomite D (Beastie Boys) birthed the idea of cutting a new album -- covers and originals - with some of these local music legends.
So the choice was made to record all analog at the very studio where it all began - Audio Recording - with the man who not only fostered an original Northwest sound but engineered a handful of the original Wheedle's Groove tracks - studio wiz Kearney Barton (The Sonics, The Wailers, Black On White Affair). And now, 5 years later, Light In The Attic is happy to put forth Wheedle's Groove - Kearney Barton, an album of 9 new earth shaking, head nodding grooves, including Patrinell (Pastor Pat Wright) Staten and the Total Experience Gospel Choir's interpretation of Soundgarden's "Jesus Christ Pose," Overton Berry's keyboard led "Humpty Dumpty" (originally recorded by Placebo/Marc Moulin), and the long overdue reunion of Ron Buford with Ural Thomas - the talented pair behind the 1965 local smash "Deep Soul".
Far
from retro cash grab rehash, this is a serious funk throw down and
original
work of art, shaming musicians half their ages in the process. Super sonic
Seattle funk and soul, it's time to let the world know the score!
Zoldar & Clark - Ghost Of Way CD (Oxford Circus) [OXF005]
$13.25
The progressive group formerly known as JASPER WRATH
(MGM-Sunflower/1971),
2008 band-released reissue compiles the best tracks from their two 1977
LP's. "Propelled by a sea of synthesizers, musically the set's firmly
entrenched in the progressive camp (check out the extended instrumental
'Luner Progressions'), though tracks such as 'Touch the Sky' and 'The
Ghost
of Way' are surprisingly accessible. The group certainly had a knack for
crafting catchy hooks and whoever handled the lead vocals had a nice and
quite commercial voice. In fact with a little bit of editing, several
songs
would have given bands like Ambrosia, Kansas, Styx and even Yes a run for
their FM radio play. Sure, it wasn't the year's most original offering,
but
give me these guys over Starcastle any day!" (The Acid Archives)
This week's VINYL update contains releases by:

Germany Mexico Turkey Australia LP (Olde English Spelling Bee) [OESB028LP]
$21.50
"Debut release from this mystery industrial-psych unit with triangle
points
resting in Greenpoint, Bushwick & Ridgewood, NJ. Imagined soundtracks for
malaria-induced fever dreams. Full color paste-on covers, limited to 215
numbered copies."
Afternoon Naps - Parade LP (Happy Happy Birthday to Me)
[HHBTM111-1] $14.50
Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol. 2 2xLP (Raster-noton) [R-N103LP]
$19.75
2x12" gatefold version. Previously-released on CD by Raster-Noton, now
released in a 2x12" gatefold version. This is the second volume in the
planned 5-volume Xerrox series by Alva Noto (Carsten Nicolai), the
follow-up to Xerrox Vol. 1, released in 2007 on Raster-Noton. While Xerrox
Vol. 1 referred to the "old world" with its tradition deeply rooted in
classical music, Xerrox Vol. 2 tries to access a "new world." It works with
samples (from Michael Nyman and Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley) that have
been gathered in the U.S.A., the so-called "new world" where the album was
largely recorded. Vol. 2 develops an overall, linear aesthetic that refers
to musical strategies of film music. Hence there are no implicitly singular
pieces, but open musical structures -- a journey without a predetermined
target. The eleven tracks on Xerrox Vol. 2 serve as documents of an
immediately experienced time or as attempts to unfold in an endless space.
Anthony Collins - Doubts & Shouts Vinyl Sampler 2 12 inch
(Freak N' Chic) [FNC042EP] $12.25
Freak n' Chic anticipates Anthony Collins' debut LP Doubts & Shouts
with a
second vinyl sampler containing remixes from Losoul and Seuil. Losoul
retains the melancholic vibe on "Tango Bizarre," but gives it a slightly
tweaky, jazz-inflected twist with that classic Losoul groove. Seuil
reworked "Prism" -- a 12-minute percussive houser and a real album
highlight. Seuil boils the percussion down to a simmering, undulating
interpretation where the bass does all the work. Two superb remixes, two
superb tracks.
Antony & The Johnsons - Aeon 7 inch (Secretly Canadian)
[SC209EP] $7.25
No description available at this time.
Bad
Secrets - Bad Secrets 10 inch (Robotic Empire) [ROB087] $17.00
The improv duo BAD SECRETS delivers dark, weird, and hypnotic jams on
their
debut release. The band, comprised of EVAN PATTERSON (YOUNG WIDOWS) and DAN
DAVIS (KODAN ARMADA), is built around a guitar-vocal-and-drums foundation.
Conceived, recorded, and mixed over three weekends in late 2007, the lo-fi
nature of this seven-track mini-album works to Bad Secrets' advantage,
setting an overall mood of drunken, haunted desperation. Patterson's unique
and twisted guitar twang mixes with distant howls and Davis' rumbling,
primal drum work. Bad Secrets successfully channels the energy and soul of
blues, the mesmerizing spirit of shoegazer and psychedelia, and the harsher
"dropped out of life" elements of desert rock. Seven varied songs (none
over three-and-a-half minutes long) are crammed onto this unique nine-inch
vinyl record, which comes with an accompanying CD of the same tunes and is
housed in a silk-screened jacket hand-made by the band members themselves.
Balmorhea - All Is Wild, All Is Silent Remixes 2xLP (Western
Vinyl) [WEST064LP] $18.00
"The idea to release the All is Wild, All is Silent Remixes evolved
organically as the band asked a few of their closest friends if they'd like
to remix a track. To their surprise 11 of their friends jumped at the
opportunity to create remixes of these wordless narratives that have become
so meaningful to them. The resulting album is distinctly more experimental
than the original album, but no less joyous and haunting. Many of the
tracks retain Balmorhea's uniquely American optimism, though some hardly
leave a trace of the original's simplicity and restraint. Highlights
include remixes by Eluvium, Peter Broderick, Tiny Vipers, Bexar Bexar, and
Helios."
Ben
Klock - Remixes 12 inch (Ostgut Ton) [OSTGUT026EP] $11.50
Presenting an unbeatable remix package of tracks from Ben Klock's debut
album, One. Rob Hood injects a kick-drum, clear synth-stabs and fragments
of Elif Biçer's voice into "Godly Sin," turning the original into a massive
techno stomper. Regis & Function's rework of "Subzero" (originally released
on Klock's Before One EP) is crisp and cold late-night techno in the
tradition of Chain Reaction and Downwards. Finally, Kenny Larkin's remix
features a bulky beat and dramatic strings caressed by sweet piano
patterns.
Billy Bao - Dialectics Of Shit LP (Parts Unknown) [LPBAOBDIAL]
$11.00
The first full-length offering from BILLY BAO. Born and raised on the
unstable streets of Lagos, Nigeria before relocating to the alleyways of a
then-recently freed Bilboa, Spain, Billy Bao is a rough, dangerous,
borderline example of society's woes turned against itself, of cultural
repression made flesh, as it foments into a madness both gleeful and
destructive. Befriended by world-renowned noise guitarist MATTIN, the two
men formed a personal alliance through the community of punk rock and the
blunt-force politics therein. Every musical action Bao makes is a statement
of political and personal intent, of the persecution that boils within him,
and yet, across his previous releases any notions of political punk rock of
the tired, insipid Anglicized version are brutally choked out. Mattin's
musical backdrops swing with the force of Bao's vocal delivery to rattling,
devastating effect.
Black Joker - Watch Out! LP (Olde English Spelling Bee)
[OESB033LP] $18.00
"Fully re-mastered vinyl edition of what was originally a Europe-only
cassette released in an edition of 80 copies from the solo project of
Spencer Clark of The Skaters/Vodka Soap/Monopoly Child et al. Spencer
describes Black Joker as being more drone-focused and with faster
percussion than the recent Monopoly Child sets. Indeed, the percussion is
thrifty and up-front, with arcs of criss-crossing time signatures
generating maximum space/time confusion. The combination of trance-informed
momentum and bubbling electronic sci-fi tones sounds closest to one of the
Sun Ra Arkestra's most future-visioned takes on 'Ancient Aethiopia' while
expanding on the classic post-Angus MacLise feel of all of the best Skaters
material. Comes with pro-printed 80s style 12" maxi-sleeves with liner
notes by Fortean authority, itinerant visionary and Skaters road mangler
in-absentia Charles Berlitz." "..the drifting of desert sand sculptures
appearing within crystaline miraged mountains during a cycle in which the
gleaming of sand star sparkled night is blown, floating towards dawn, as
the racing of the camels amongst the sunbound mirages expend dimensions of
presentation for these sculptures, which, as wind diminishes and returns, a
sand is cast to represent the variety of dimensions interacted : as symbold
vision, where the atmosphered wind senses the stars amongst the sand, the
camel within the mirage, and the mediation of an experiences whole motion
of interaction..." -- David Keenan
Black Sheep - Kiss My Sweet Apocalypse 2xLP (Invada) [INV068LP]
$33.00
Boris Brejcha - Magic Gum 12 inch (Harthouse) [HHMA026EP]
$11.50
"A: 'Magic Gum': Another sparkling tune which is full of surprising
variations and effects. Deep bass and drums -- pure energy which gets
messed up in a magnificent manner. Crackling sounds go against the clear
structured beat and the background is peppered with various spheres. B:
'Desire':This sounds like a role model for a b-side track. The break in the
middle, stressed by the male voice is like a turning point -- again perfect
for dance floor use but also for a long journey by train or plane -- listen
and enjoy it!"
Bunnygrunt - Matt Harnish & Other Delights LP (Happy Happy
Birthday to Me) [HHBTM110-1] $14.50
BVoice & KHz - Courier 12 inch (Pro-tez) [PROTEZ011EP]
$10.25
"After excellent and highly regarded releases on Pro-Tez, Treibstoff,
Dumb
Unit ant THC the duo of Bvoice and Killahertz now returns with their new
strike - the Courier EP. All three tracks work clearly for the dancefloor
and boost a swift, modern tech-sound now and then revealing deep and
glitchy roots. Chasing grooves mix with a stiff portion of fun and make a
perfect summer 12". 'Bench Affair' comes as a co-op with Modul (Subotnik,
Level Records etc.)."
Chaim - Thrill You 12 inch (Bpitch Control) [BPC197EP]
$11.50
Israeli genius Chaim presents three tracks that take liberties with
their
highly-organized structures. "Thrill You" starts dead-on house-y with
slightly lascivious, breathy oohhs and ahhs. The next level features an
absolutely compelling mini-melody. "Danceable" boasts sampled saxophone
phrases in the wake of house beats, and "We Do" rolls super-house-y, like
it was cast from some sort of massive, elastic, synthetic material. The
track becomes increasingly condensed until unrecognizably-bent voice
samples and rhythmic echo effects are generated. Bulls-eye.
Christina Carter - Lace Heart 2xLP (Root Strata) [LPCARTELACE]
$23.25
Double LP reissue of a 2005 CD-R released on CHRISTINA CARTER's own
Many
Breaths imprint. Six love songs comprised of elliptical bell like guitar
phrases, barely there, sometimes even coaxing silence, set behind the
extended vowel sounds of voice. Soft gentle performances here, like this
whole record was cut very very late at night or in the early hours of the
morning. An unhinged 'nowness' is pervasive in Christina's work, and Lace
Heart is no exception. There is a very private feeling here, some kinda
intimacy that just feels really rare. Lovers of past, present & future all
collapse into one. Memories of smells, tastes and textures all channeled
into wide open song. No one really does it like this. Three sides of music
and an etching of one of Christina's drawings on the fourth side. Red vinyl
with maroon splatter. Edition of 500.
Cold Cave - Love Comes Close LP (Heartworm Press) [HEART035LP]
$15.25
Love Comes Close is the debut full-length from COLD CAVE. After
releasing
singles on Hospital Productions, What's Your Rupture?, and Dais Records, as
well as a comp of early material, Cold Cave has now released their first
realized version of modern pop music through their own Heartworm Press.
Balance is one of Cold Cave's more dominant features, laced with equal
parts or romance and nihilism. Somewhere in the realms of negative hiss and
out-of-body bliss there is a peak awaiting all who enter. WESLEY EISOLD is
joined by an orbiting line-up that includes CARALEE MCELROY (XIU XIU),
DOMINICK FERNOW (PRURIENT), MAX G. MORTON and J. BENOIT. Cold Cave is a
force that has been compared to both Erasure and Whitehouse, a force that
just does what it does.
Collections of Colonies of Bees - Birds LP (Table Of The
Elements) [TOE818LP] $16.50
"Now available on vinyl! Collections Of Colonies Of Bees sweep in
grandly,
in billowing swarms of sound, bourn aloft on a thousand wings of minuscule,
elegant detail. Guitars chime and soar; deft yet intensely focused
percussion propels towards an inevitable dawn; covering it all is a
gossamer veil of subtly nuanced electronica. Their CD Birds is joyous, epic
minimalism in exquisite registration, a sound that is dazzling - and as
sweet as honey taken straight from the comb."
cv313 - Sailingstars 12 inch (Echospace) [ECHOSPACE009EP]
$10.75
On Sailingstars, cv313 preach the gospel of deep with a rippling
exercise
in space and bass. A sort of slow-motion movement in tone and 38 hz
sub-frequency which verges on the disturbing -- a sonic threshold hard to
achieve on vinyl. The power of repetition brings the listener to an almost
hypnotic state within its melodic, spatial groove. Intrusion's reworks are
equally as effective, providing low-end throbs, analog spirits and organic
textures captured in zero gravity, like sailing among the stars.
D.A. - Odeon LP (Olde English Spelling Bee) [OESB038LP]
$19.75
"Debut album by sci-fi oriented vintage synth duo who recently
relocated to
Los Angeles from Texas. Very outsider in that they were completely unaware
of the current synth revival going on in the American underground
(Emeralds, OPN, Caboladies, et al). D.A. began recording after being
commissioned to make soundtracks for floatation tanks at a new age center
in Texas. A chance meeting at a cafe led to the duo handing dozens of hours
of these sessions to OESB. This album features some standouts from those
early recordings. Their time in Los Angeles has been highlighted by a
series of private rooftop concerts that overlook training grounds for the
L.A.P.D. riot squads - the scrambling helicopters and practice gun battles
below adding to the sinister dystopian vibe of their compositions. Limited
numbered run of 400 copies, silkscreened by Monoroid on heavy duty
chipboard jackets."
Danny Ocean - Lights In My Dark World/Flashing 12 inch
(Desolat) [DESOLAT004EP] $11.50
Originally released in 2008. "Lights In My Dark World" is awash in the
kind
of fluttering, hissing sea-foam grooves that you have come to expect from
Desolat; as well the underhanded drama and subtle retro flourishes
befitting the eponymous Frank Sinatra character. Danny Ocean is from
Barcelona, with eclectic influences that include the morbid strains of
Brazilian thrash metal, the earliest little fluffy clouds of British
electronica, as well as the polished bass lines and classic soul of Stevie
or Quincy.
Distinction & Kromestar - Zzzapaah 12 inch (Noppa) [NOPPA004EP]
$10.25
"Tes La Rok is one of the masters of the dancefloor sound, inspiring
movement without the need for cheap tricks, and here invites Distinction
and Kromestar to flex their might on his Noppa imprint. Splurting electro
synths and raw male 'Zappah' vocals introduce the A, with a choice
selection of bass bulges and laser wobbles firing off over the tuff beats
and incidental drum edits. Tes himself gets involved on the B, with dread
samples fading beneath the militant LFOs and relentless percussion."
DJ
W!ld - La Cigogne 12 inch (Love Letters From Oslo) [LLFO010EP] $11.50
"Love Letters From Oslo presents with their 10th release a very special
producer. DJ W!LD, who is also owner from Catwash, has a lot of releases
and remixes around already. Now with La Cigogne, he starts his contribution
to the sublabel from Oslo. On the A-Side we have a house track called
'Goiabada,' which the people will love because of the '80s touch. On the
B-Side we have 'La Cigogne' and 'Roumaniaque.' Both tracks are very fine
house tools and absolutely dancefloor orientated. Welcome DJ W!ld!"
Duff Mckagan's Loaded - Sick LP (Cockroach Media / Zodiac
Killer) [ZKR089] $16.50
RELEASE DATE: 09-15-2009
4 custom colored vinyl pressings + Bonus 2 Track 7". Custom LP only
cover
art by MEXICAN CHOCOLATE DESIGN.
Excision & Endophyte - Aliens 12 inch (Dubline) [DUBLINE003EP]
$10.25
"Dubline is back again after a brief break. And boy do they come
correct
with this 12 inch single by none other then Rottun Don Excision! 'Aliens'
starts quietly as the silence before the storm but after the break you know
why we all love Excision. Not bound by the laws of commercialism, Excision
breaks it down underground style. It's dirty gritty and gives you a kick in
the face to boot! The other side sees Excision take on a somewhat deeper
style. Dark and evil, with a whole lotta sub! Excision tackles this release
with ease!"
Fire! - You Liked Me Five Minutes Ago LP (Rune Grammofon)
[RLP3091LP] $17.25
Vinyl-only format. This is the second full-length release from Norway's
Motorpsycho on the Rune Grammofon label. Fans and critics seemed to agree
that their last album Little Lucid Moments (RCD 2073CD/RLP 3073LP) showed a
band injected with new energy as well as being back to form. Celebrating 20
years as a band, this newfound energy will surely be the envy of many
younger groups as they now also sound tighter than ever. Child Of The
Future consists of six trademark Motorpsycho high-energy rockers recorded
by Steve Albini in his Chicago studio and bearing the classic hallmarks of
great riffs, that driving tractor bass, and some truly inspired guitar
work. The slightly Zeppelin-esque "The Waiting Game" is of the mellower
sort, recorded at home. With 1993's Demon Box, Motorpsycho laid down the
blueprint for much of the stoner psychedelia that would spawn a number of
bands many years later. Today, it's more difficult to put a tag on
Motorpsycho; '70s hard rock comes to mind, there are traces of West Coast
psychedelia, Krautrock, punk, improv, prog rock and more, all melting into
that special Motorpsycho sound developed through years of recording and
touring. Motorpsycho have always been fans of music dating back to the late
'60s and the '70s, especially when it comes to production values and
presentation. It should not come as a shock to anyone, especially not to
the fans, that they have chosen to release this album on vinyl only, at
least for the time being. Seeing as it is an analog recording, engineered
by Steve Albini and having a distinctly '70s feel, whether it's the
hardrock of the early '70s or the punk values of the later '70s, it is only
natural to release it on the format that many still consider to be the
ultimate sound carrier. Package contains stunning sleeve work by Kim
Hiorthøy, featuring two die-cuts with print on the inside, a thick, color
inner sleeve, including a 60x60 poster with color print on both sides.
Pressed on white 180 gram vinyl. Motorpsycho is: Bent Sæther (bass, vocals,
and various instruments), Hans Magnus Ryan (guitar, vocals), and Kenneth
Kapstad (drums). Guest musician: Larry Space (piano on "Cornucopia").
Forbes/Young/Walter - American Free LP (ugEXPLODE) [UG36]
$8.75
The music is intense, furious and relenting as it is articulate, clear
and
dynamic. This all-acoustic formation-the former duo hailing from Chicago
and the latter from Oakland, California-generates their dense sound with
pure sweat and energy (harkening back to the golden eras of Albert Ayler,
Cecil Taylor, Peter Brotzmann and Milford Graves) while pushing concepts
firmly into the future by adding new structural elements, timbres and
techniques to this basic foundation. The group is committed to pushing the
limits of sound and fury, bringing blood and guts back to this musical
form. MIKE FORBES' brutish tenor sound is large and volcanic but includes a
finely focused approach to phrasing that puts him head and shoulders above
the "hard blowing free jazz tenor" cliche. At times he reveals a fractured
approach to rhythm, spitting out clusters of detailed sonic shards at a
rapid interval. His control of harmonics is varied and precise. ANDREW
SCOTT YOUNG's bass playing is broad and supportive, harmonically and
texturally, maintaining great momentum and gluing the violent outbursts of
the trio into a coherent whole. WEASEL WALTER on drums, enough said.
High Places/Soft Circle - Split 12 inch (Post Present Medium)
[PPM025EP] $10.25
"Soft Circle and High Places from New York bang out a limited split
12".
Good for the club or meditation, two of the most epic music groups in the
underground kill it on every level; art, audio and pleasure."
Human Skab - Stay Thirsty LP (Family Vineyard) [FV026LP]
$16.00
"Stay Thirsty is one of a half-dozen or so cassette tapes recorded by
Human
Skab during the mid-1980s and injected into the underground web of cassette
traders and freak finders. Now, 23 years later this is the first time any
of the Skab's rare recordings have been reissued or even made available
outside of dusty, personal collections."
Internullo - Sentimente (Nea Marin Remix) 12 inch (Desolat)
[DESOLAT002EP] $11.50
Originally released in 2007. Born in Sicily, now Romania's best-loved
DJ,
Nea Marin (Rhadoo) presents Desolat's second release -- a remix of
Internullo's "Sentimente." Finely-drawn sentiments and metallic hats
quietly chip away on top of a rising tide of reverberating pads, engulfing
you in an emotion you hardly knew you felt. The original track reflects the
ominous fragmentation of our modern times, but Marin's version evokes the
memories that might swell up from between those sparse beats.
Jack Sparrow - The Chase/The Fullest 12 inch (Tectonic)
[TEC030EP] $10.75
This is the debut Tectonic release for Jack Sparrow. "The Chase" begins
with a dissonant chord -- rising, evolving and building the tension slowly
before energized hats come crashing in. Raging subs and a tribal conga
pattern will have you skanking the moment you hear it. "The Fullest"
features Biggins alongside him on the buttons, with a more relaxed vibe,
the galloping kick pattern rolling with smooth chords in a deep house
style. Breezy dubstep for groovers.
Jacuzzi Boys - Check That Body 12 inch (Below) [BELOW022EP]
$11.50
"When two good friends share a passion and have the opportunity to
collaborate to realize a dream, the results can only be promising. The DJ
duo Jacuzzi Boys, which was founded in the beginning of 2007 by Marc
Phillipp and Florian Settele, stands for minimal deep beats with unique
mixing skills and an exceptional performance. Since mid 2009, both guys are
located in the Rhine-Main area. With their first vinyl release Ramba Zamba
on Komplex Audio in January 2009, the Jacuzzi Boys showed a small preview
of their impressive musical talent. Their next vinyl Check That Body on
Below brings a memorable killer, together with their buddy Jens Peters from
the DJ-collective Primitive Visions. B1's fluent vocals gives the
impression to taste 'guindillas' picantes. B2 is pure Spanish percussion
art with a relaxed attitude."
Japandroids - Post-nothing LP (Polyvinyl) [PRC184] $12.25
JAPANDROIDS (JPNDRDS) is a two piece band from Vancouver, BC. This
'band'
started in 2006 as a creative outlet for the post-teenage angst of BRIAN
KING and DAVID PROWSE. Originally intending to be a trio, the boys decided
to forgo the logistical nightmare of having a 'lead singer' and do it
themselves. As a consequence, Japandroids are one guitar, one set of drums,
and two vocalizers. They call it garage rock. They don't care what you call
it, as long as it's not minimal. Japandroids are maximal-a two piece band
trying to sound like a five piece band. These latest gems run the gauntlet
of rock 'n' roll sub-genres, with the boys ripping off too many different
bands to sound like any other duo making music right now. Best New Music in
Pitchfork (8.3 Rating).
Jay
Haze - Mama Coca 12 inch (Desolat) [DESOLAT005EP] $11.50
Originally released in 2008, this is U.S. producer Jay Haze's deep and
minimal Mama Coca in the original and edit form, also including a remix by
SIS.
Jilt van Moorst - Sublimination 12 inch (Caravan) [CVAN009EP]
$10.75
Jilt van Moorst presents two cuts for Caravan. "Sublimination Ritual"
is a
quirky tech-bomb complete with submerged oscillator tones, phat-ass,
low-end bass-stabs and super-tight polyrhythms. A new dimension of arranged
sounds, all forged together by Jilt finding digital juju ghosts inside his
Doepfer Modular synth and analog drum modules. "Pecker" is a harder,
darker, faster 4/4 trip -- an intricately-crafted piece of reduced
warehouse techno with ever-evolving, flying, steppers polyrhythms -- fans
of Sleeparchive and early Plastikman won't be disappointed.
John Foxx - Burning Car/20th Century 12 inch (Metamatic)
[meta1201] $9.00
RELEASE DATE: 09-14-2009
Includes free download versions of the tracks -- emailed to you after
purchase.
John Roberts - Blame 12 inch (Laid) [LAID004EP] $10.25
John Roberts has floored audiences with past releases on Dial. A1 -
Blame,
B1 - Relate.
Jonas Kopp - Deliric 12 inch (Curle Recordings) [CURLE020EP]
$11.50
Jonas Kopp first impressed the DJ league and techno fans worldwide in
2007
with his incredible remix of Plan Tec's "Espias Psiquicos" on Spectral's
Death Is Nothing To Fear 2 compilation 12". In the meantime, he has
released more amazing records on labels such as Weave, Vinyl Club and CMYK
Musik. His debut release on Curle sounds like Brothers' Vibe meets Radio
Slave at Berghain. Sounds tempting, doesn't it?
Lasse Marhaug - The Orange Dome Chronicles 2x7 inch (Autofact)
[FACT010EP] $12.25
Lasse Marhaug presents The Orange Dome Chronicles -- inspired by 1960s
and
1970s occult cinema; from the technicolor-horror of Hammer Studios, Amicus
and Mario Bava, to the avant-garde of Donald Cammell's Performance and
Kenneth Anger's Lucifer Rising. This release was tailored especially to the
exotic 2x7" format, cut for play at 45 rpm in a deluxe heavyweight gatefold
sleeve with Håvard Gjelseth's design printed in metallic inks with a
fluorescent orange inlay. Pressed in a limited edition of only 666 copies
worldwide.
Loco Dice - 7 Dunham Place Remixed Part 1 2x12 inch (Desolat)
[7DPRMX001EP] $19.00
Loco Dice asked a select group of artists to remix and re-interpret
their
favorite track from his album 7 Dunham Place. What resulted for the first
volume is a full spectrum of house and techno translations by Cassy, DJ
Sneak, Luciano, and Mike Huckaby that perfectly encapsulate the mood of
2008, while anticipating the direction of dance music in 2009. Bound to
cause a serious stir on the dancefloor.
Loco Dice - 7 Dunham Place Remixed Part 2 2x12 inch (Desolat)
[7DPRMX002EP] $19.00
The Desolat label presents the second volume in a special remix series
of
tracks off of Loco Dice's 7 Dunham Place album. What resulted in volume 2
is a full spectrum of house and techno translations by Marcel Dettmann,
Onur Ä-zer, Marco Carola and Mike Huckaby.
Luciano & Mirko Loko - Family 12 inch (Desolat) [DESOLAT006EP]
$11.50
Originally released in 2008. Luciano & Mirko Loko present a family
affair.
You'll hear them all laughing on "Mousa Big Band" -- an almost-lost track.
After listening to this EP, you'll wish you had an uncle who would be able
to make a beautiful track for you ("Serena").
Magas - Violent Arp 12 inch (Punch Records) [10526] $23.75
12" mini-LP (45 rpm) + MP3 coupon Transparent Red vinyl in special
outfolder/cut cover Limited edition of 333 hand-numbered copies VIOLENT ARP
is exactly what the name implies. This 6-song mini LP is crammed with wild
and diabolical ARP Odyssey sludge riffs, earth-shaking 808s and tough,
surreal vocals all grounded firmly in a hard rocking sensibility.
Carelessly welding ultra-minimal techno to vintage hard rock excess, MAGAS
comes barreling toward you like some kind of burning train-wreck of Robert
Hood and Sir Lord Baltimore. Whether it's the unhinged leads on "Cool
American", the howling mid-tempo stomp'n'sway of "Statue" or the re-imaged
version of COUCH's "Devil Is Flying", you are guaranteed to hear nothing
but VIOLENT ARP. Following in the footsteps of Nic coloPaganini and his
demonic violin, MAGAS has unrepentantly claimed the ARP Odyssey 2800 Mk I
as his instrument of destruction.
Magnolia Electric Co. - Josephine LP (Secretly Canadian)
[SC185LP] $14.50
No description available at this time.
Makam - Deep Loving 12 inch (Sushitech Purple) [SUSHP014EP]
$11.50
"Sushitech Purple 14." If you didn't pick up Makam's The Hague Soul on
Netherlands-based label So We So, here's another chance to check out
Makam's infectiously pumping take on house music.
Makossa & Megablast - Marrakesh 12 inch (International Deejay
Gigolo) [GIGOLO253EP] $11.50
Makossa & Megablast let their world travels influence their new sound
on
Marrakesh -- electronic meets world meets dance; with the styles extending
over Afro/ethno, house, dub, disco, broken beats, and hip-hop, all with
that celebrated analog feel. Each track has an unmistakable flavor of its
own, from the exotic melody and cheeky line of "Marrakesh," to the arped-up
melancholy of "Juno Ride." The perfect juxtaposition between intelligence
and self-irony, judgement and experimentation, self-awareness and downright
discovery.
Micha Klang - Baby I Am For Real 12 inch (Safari) [SAF038EP]
$11.50
"First EP on Safari Electronique from Micha Klang from Nuremberg
(Germany).
He's also the manager of the label Glückskind Schallplatten! This 3 track
EP is deep and sensual! Groovy beat with nice melodies and some voices
turning around! The powerful remix from Nima Gorji is just the perfect one
to make you move! Already supported by: Tobi Neuman, Mathias Kaden, Dyed
Soundorom, Someone Else, Anthony Collins, Luciano Esse etc."
Mini - Chronicles Remixes 12 inch (Space Factory) [SFC019EP]
$11.50
"Mini's dry vocals, tells a story that turns out unexpectedly and make
you
travel through the piece. Razor sharp bass and square drums take the lead
with a certain melancholic and personnal touch. Airy pads and glitchy
rhythms keep you on the edge. Ascii Disko's version brings the deep and
floaty side to surface. Remember Kotai? Deep bass, spooky pads
progressively bringing the track to it's climax with an 'acid' influenced
breakdown. David Carretta's remix arises the dramatic side of the track
with a new melody to accompany the lyrics and keep the thrill, while a new
beat influenced bassline drives the track to it's full intensity."
Modeselektor - Hello Mom! 2xLP (Bpitch Control) [BPC115LP]
$17.25
2005 release, Double LP version.
Motorpsycho - Child Of The Future LP (Rune Grammofon)
[RLP2088LP] $20.50

Kapstad (drums). Guest musician: Larry Space (piano on "Cornucopia").
N.E.W. - NEWtoons LP (Bo Weavil Recordings) [SIDRA001LP]
$19.00
This is the third full-length release by N.E.W., the UK jazz power trio
of
Alex Ward (electric guitar), John Edwards (bass), and Steve Noble
(drums/percussion). NEWtoons is the first release in a new series on Bo'
Weavil Recordings -- Sidra Edition. Pressed in a limited edition of 300
hand-numbered copies on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl, and housed inside
thick, hand-assembled covers. NEWtoons captures the trio in all their live
ferocity, potency and inventive group improvisation. Equal measures free
improv as avant-rock, these three live tracks reveal the sheer power,
attack and total commitment that these musicians have to reaching new
heights. As Jazzwise magazine put it, "Ward is phenomenal, all spidery
glissandi and slashing chords. Edwards is a dark magus of a bass player
thundering against the elements, while Noble is a violent, malevolent
presence. If these guys' personalities reflect their playing, you just
wouldn't want to find yourself down a darkened alley with them. A
white-knuckled ride you'll be glad to take."
Oberman Knocks - 13th Smallest 12 inch (Aperture) [AP001EP]
$10.25
12" EP version, heavyweight pressing. Tracklist: A1. Walkers Ret-Ret
Hive,
A2. Holtzen Anger Mire, B1. Lackey Remand, B2. Beckerton First Draft.
Olene Kadar - Mi Locks Got Longa 12 inch (Mo's Ferry)
[MFP045EP] $11.50
Olene Kadar presents a 12" for Mo's Ferry, Mi Locks Got Longa,
featuring
track "Yipyipyip," which impresses with an extraordinarily addicting ragga
vocal and a freaky beat wrapping. Dave Aju's remix is very relaxed, reduced
to the bare essentials and garnished with vocals and e-piano chords. On the
flip, you'll find the dashing rave monster "Neal Deepersma," bringing Olene
Kadar's former releases on Mo's Ferry to mind.
Oliver Huntemann - Shanghai Spinner 12 inch (Ideal)
[IDEAL007EP] $12.25
"Shanghai Spinner" is the second single from Oliver Huntemann's H-3 to
receive special attention and to get dressed in sexy vinyl. This massive
track will make you ecstatic and will spin you round and round. And if this
is not enough, the B-side of the 12" is reserved for the legendary Joey
Beltram, who gives us his side of the story. In case you haven't bought H-3
yet, you better hop to it, before it's too late.
Owen/Rutabega - Split 12 inch (Polyvinyl) [PRC072] $10.25
MIKE KINSELLA (AMERICAN FOOTBALL, CAP'N JAZZ, JOAN OF ARC) and his nom
de
guerre is joined by THE RUTABEGA (aka JOSH HENSLEY) on this popular OWEN
title that is being released for the first time on vinyl. The Owen side
features an alternate version of "Poor Souls" which appears on Owen's
second album No Good for No One Now and also includes a solo version of
American Football's "Never Meant." Each artist contributes three songs.
Plastique De Reve - Love On The Tape 12 inch (Space Factory)
[SFC020EP] $11.50
"Plastique De Rêve's new single on David Carretta's label Space Factory
Disques follows up on last year's fantastic release on DFA with 'It's
Summer !!,' a perfect techno-pop summer hit with another great feature by
vocalist Ghostape, and dives further into the realms of electro-disco,
synth-pop and cosmic music. Ultra synthetic and light-hearted, yet dreamy
and emotional, the three tracks each capture with authenticity the essence
of electronic disco music but pay tribute to it here in a very original,
playful and modern way. 'It's Summer !!' is a great follow-up to Plastique
De Rêve's previous singles on DFA and Supersoul Recordings, also featuring
Ghostape on vocals. This time the music goes even deeper into the worlds of
synth-pop and electronic disco, with reminiscences of Vince Clarke's Yazoo,
Giorgio Moroder or Kelley Polar. The sunny, laidback, 'pop radio'
atmosphere, together with Ghostape's emotional build up of the deliberately
simplest lyrics ever written so far, might well keep you smiling, and
dancing, all summer. 'Dance On' continues in this 'early Depeche Mode'
direction but adds a more romantic and retro touch, this time with
Plastique himself using the vocoder's harmonic qualities to create a
hypnotic and emotional atmosphere. 'Love On The Tape' is a beautiful track
with just a bassline and a vocoded voice that Plastique had recorded in
1999 already, singing along to a Commodore 64 with a Korg Vocoder. It's a
very personal, emotional track about love and loss, paralleled with
nostalgia for discarded technological music instruments and recording
formats: the Commodore 64 computer, the vocoder, the tape recorder... This
recently re-worked "rhythm version" creates a more dynamic 'cosmic disco'
feel by adding subtle beats, catchy melodic synth lines and deep sweeping
sounds to the original."
Rebolledo - Guerrero 12 inch (Comeme) [COMEME004EP] $10.25
New release from Matías Aguayo's label. Rebolledo was previously
featured
on Comeme 002. Tracklist: A1 Guerrero, A2 Venganza y seducción, B1
Marchante, B2 Raid a la joya.
Rich Reason & Fantastic Mr Fox - Fall 12 inch (Black Acre)
[ACRE012EP] $10.25
"Clocking in here for the first time since their warmly received debut
on
Hemlock, Rich Reason & Fantastic Mr Fox jerk the Black Acre steering wheel
sharply left into a murky new trajectory. Fall, an ode to the autumnal
onset features the lush sound textures that have become the Manc super
team's calling card. Kicking off as a horn blasting bass-lead 130 skanker,
'Fall' proceeds to hoodwink the listener with haunted soul and anomalous
artifacts buried deep in the sampledelic mist. A thin line is deftly
navigated in combining the muscular low-end with an enriching sound palate,
stimulating both body and synapse. 'Lo-Fi-Ve,' walks a longer more arduous
path, masquerading initially as a sinuous dose of future garage, the
clipped snares and 808 boom will have you on your feet quicker than the ice
cream truck. Ever the curve ball pitchers, a Hitchcockian twist abruptly
takes us into the obscure. Distant horns and warping bass are bathed in the
UV glare of bubbling operatic synth-work climaxing in a cascade of citric
sound. Support: Jamie Vex'd, Bobby Friction, TRG, Untold, Geiom, DJ Yoda,
Pangaea, Kid Kameleon Reviews: DJ, Mixmag, Wire, IDJ."
Rodriguez Jr. - Tuning #07 12 inch (Boxer Recordings)
[BOXER073EP] $11.50
Christian Hilscher and Nico Plagemann aka Kollektiv Turmstrasse remix
Rodriguez Jr.'s "Lila." Three minutes before the start: three double
signals are flashing at the starting lights. The pilots are strapped into
their cockpits with pinpoint accuracy. Windows down, elbows out. The sound
system is pushed to the limit, the golden Chevrolet is shimmering -- a real
feast for the audience's eyes and ears.
Sascha Braemer - Ghost Hand 12 inch (Stil Vor Talent)
[SVT035EP] $11.50
Sascha Braemer is one part of Heinrich & Hirtenfellner, and has topped
everybody's DJ charts with his funk-laden, minimal soul piece, "Mamba
Drums" on Kindisch Records. Here, he presents three funky, minimal groovers
to Oliver Koletzki's imprint. "Ghost Hand" features a dry, minimal loop
with a rhythmic vocal sample, "Girl" is a dubby piece of tech-house with
soulful vocals and beautiful strings, and "Guitar Man" is a stripped-down
loop with an echoed guitar riff and some dark, wobbly bass lines.
Sebastien San - Figure SPC B 12 inch (Figure Spc) [FIGSPCB]
$11.50
"A rather talented Frenchman in love with Detroit is the second artist
to
contribute their music to the SPC catalogue. Sebastien San, who has already
released highly received productions with labels like Rush Hour, Planet E
and Echochord, provides two wonderful cuts for Figure SPC B. Reminiscent of
heroic expeditions into the unknown, both 'Chief Inspector' and 'Midnight
Motion' have all the brawn, intelligence and forward-pushing energy of
those young and fearless techno pioneers some twenty years past. Full of
raw, unadulterated emotions and overwhelming, room-filling waves of kinetic
energy, '...Inspector' greets us with an instantly catchy synth hook,
rising amongst a strong, classic groove that seeks out the hidden dancer in
all of us. Rising and falling through a canyon of synthesisers, a melody of
epic proportions fuels this night train's dramatic adventure, freezing time
and space in its path."
Shantel - Planet Paprika LP (Essay Recordings) [AY023LP]
$16.00
After more than 250 internationally-acclaimed and celebrated live shows
throughout 2008 -- from Glastonbury to Roskilde, from Southside to the
Hurricane Festival, from east coast to west coast -- renowned German
DJ/producer Stefan Hantel aka Shantel and his band of gypsies, the Bucovina
Club Orkestar present Planet Paprika -- a chronicle of their slow takeover
of the planet via international musical mind-melding. Gathering a host of
awards and chart positions along the way, culminating in platinum status in
Turkey, Shantel has perfected a Byzantine flurry of brass sounds, disco,
Balkan beats and belly-dancing -- a music without frontiers -- a cultural
temporary autonomous zone where integration isn't something to be debated
at length, but where it actually becomes reality. Planet Paprika has its
own set of values: the pursuit of genuinely European pop music where north
meets south and east meets west, and they are all equal in the mind of the
musician. Limited edition of 1,500 copies worldwide, pressed on 180 gram
vinyl. LP jacket printed on 350 gram cardboard, with an insert featuring a
high quality photo print.
Silk Flowers - Silk Flowers LP (Post Present Medium) [PPM026LP]
$11.25
"Silk Flowers from NYC bring the 4 track mess and blips of pure bliss.
Art
world messing, samples and singing, drums, keyboard, and super original,
think Kraftwerk in a garbage can wearing a trench coat. Be prepared to
enter a new world. Minimal and even more minimal."
Singing Southern Echos of Memphis - Somebody Touched Me LP (Big
Legal Mess) [BLM0236] $13.50
A reissue of the Somebody Touched Me album from THE SINGING SOUTHERN
ECHOS
OF MEMPHIS TENNESSEE. Originally released on the legendary DIY gospel label
Designer Records, you get eleven tracks of classic gospel sounds.
Japandroids - Post-nothing [PRC184:r] Polyvinyl $10.75 ***JAPANDROIDS
(JPNDRDS) is a two piece band from Vancouver, BC. This 'band' started in
2006 as a creative outlet for the post-teenage angst of BRIAN KING and
DAVID PROWSE. Originally intending to be a trio, the boys decided to forgo
the logistical nightmare of having a 'lead singer' and do it themselves. As
a consequence, Japandroids are one guitar, one set of drums, and two
vocalizers. They call it garage rock. They don't care what you call it, as
long as it's not minimal. Japandroids are maximal-a two piece band trying
to sound like a five piece band. These latest gems run the gauntlet of rock
'n' roll sub-genres, with the boys ripping off too many different bands to
sound like any other duo making music right now. Best New Music in
Pitchfork (8.3 Rating).
Skygreen Leopards, The - Gorgeous Johnny LP (Jagjaguwar)
[JAG147LP] $14.50
Slam/Rejected - Dead Dog Bounce/Peanuts 12 inch (Figure)
[FIGURE020EP] $11.50
"The 20th release of Len Faki's Figure label is ready to hit the
shelves in
the form of a modern electronic powerhouse. Featuring two of the techno
scene's most respected production forces, Slam and Rejected provide the
goods in this split artist double-header. Figure 20 is truly set to rock!
The fabled duo Slam, of Soma records fame, are a household name when it
comes to forward thinking, emotional and cutting edge techno. Rocking clubs
with their new wave of productions, and their fledgling Paragraph label,
the pair look to freakier, darker corners of the dancefloor with their
mighty 'Dead Dog Bounce.' Words simply cannot describe the sheer
unstoppable energy that flows from this monstrous work...! Surging, hi-tech
rhythms drive an intense building rollercoaster of a track that's perfect
for the biggest dancefloors. Pitching, climbing, hissing and rolling
towards an almighty slab of bass, this is the sound of Slam at their most
devastating!"
Son
of Earth - Improvements - Amish R/w Series Vol. 1 LP (Amish) [AMI-R/W031]
$19.25
The first in Amish Records' new Required Wreckers series featuring
artists
exploring the intersections of sound, art, improvisation, drone,
experimentation and modern composition. Beginning a decade ago, in a
Pre-Weird America, SON OF EARTH has traveled a surprisingly linear
trajectory through noise and collective improvisation to a simple, quiet,
and more considered music. The band's path has led through hundreds of
performances and collaborations (including Shackamaxon, which brought
together all three members of Son of Earth with Marcia Bassett and Chris
Gray of Double Leopards and Pete Nolan of the Magik Markers), but has
resulted in only a handful of releases, often handcrafted and released on
the group's Apostasy Recordings label. While still being filled with the
unease and tension that is their hallmark, Improvements is the first record
that also allows the humor and camaraderie between the members of Son of
Earth to come to the fore.
Speech Debelle - Speech Therapy 2xLP (Big Dada) [BD137LP]
$20.00
"Speech's sound has been received as urban pop, and she's drawn
comparisons
to Lily Allen and been called the lovechild of Biggie Smalls and Joanna
Newsome. The childlike quality of her voice belies her often dark lyrical
subject matter. The oldest song on here is called 'Finish This Album.' It
was the tune she first played when she visited Big Dada almost five years
ago. Speech is both young and old beyond her years. At the age of 25 her
fragile voice can make her sound like a teenager, but she's packed in
enough experience to last most people forever."
Subscape - Wrong Number 12 inch (Dub Police) [DP029EP]
$10.25
"Dub Police only release big big tunes, and this is set to become one
of
the biggest dance releases of 2009. Spanning many genres, Subscape has made
a monster track with 'Nothing Wrong.' If High Contrast made dubstep it
might sound like this! 'Wrong Number' is the more aggressive, grinding and
pulsating all the way to the run out groove. Supported by Caspa, Annie Mac,
Marlow."
U.V. Race - Malaria 7 inch (S-s Records) [SS030EP] $6.00
"In the beginning, the U.V. Race were the product of two rural
Australians'
imagination. Throughout high school, Al & Marcus had the band but no sound.
A few years go by and Al moves to Melbourne and joins Straight Jacket
Nation with Daniel -- they play speedy hardcore. Marcus moves to Melbourne
and with his pal Al, Daniel, Moses and Emily, U.V. Race made some noise.
After some playing around, they released a great single on Aarght! Records
and a split tape with pals Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Enter S.S.
Records and this new record, Malaria, the U.V. Race's second record. Four
songs long, the UVs take their influences (X, Cramps, Electric Eels, VU,
etc.) and get loose. While the songs are songs, nothing is too planned out
as the band thrives on spontaneity. Captured on tape by Eddy Current
guitarist Mikey Young, Malaria is yet another great record to come out of
today's Melbourne DIY scene."
Vampire Hands - Hannah In The Mansion LP (St. Ives)
[SAINT029LP] $13.50
"Born like a bolt of lightning, Vampire Hands are a quintessential kind
of
midwestern band. All of the personality and insular weirdness present in so
many other Minneapolis groups' music, VH has taken all of their combined
winters and created a cold and isolated sound that is hard to pin down but
still strangely familiar. Their latest release, Hannah in the Mansion,
focuses more on the band's collective obsession with the wilted
calypso-cana of Mayo Thompson and the rickety blues of Neil Young than
their previous four releases but still maintaining their swirling, modern
psychedelic tendencies. Despite recording and touring at a break-neck pace
since their inception in 2005, the band shows no signs of slowing down and
only expanding exponentially on tapping into their idealized vision of
classic American rock."
Various Artists - Searching For The Now Vol. 5 7 inch
(Slumberland) [SL94] $4.50
Slumberland's popular split single series returns with two new
installments. Searching For The Now 5 is an all-Swedish offering. On the
A-side is a track from Gothenburg's LIECHTENSTEIN, a band that marries the
angularity of post-punk groups like The Mo-Dettes with the pop appeal of
Talulah Gosh or The Aislers Set. The B-side features fellow Gothenburg band
THE FAINTEST IDEAS, whose chaotic pop tunes have blazed a singular path
through the indie world since their formation as THE JAVELINS in 2003.
Influenced by punk rock, caffeine, and perhaps a lager or two, The Faintest
Ideas haven't even a whiff of twee about them, their feedback-laced attack
finding more in common with The Wedding Present, Bright Lights, and
Boyracer than most indie pop bands. The two songs on this single are
otherwise unreleased and were recorded by MARKUS GOERSCH (Love Is All) and
WYATT CUSICK (The Aislers Set). Pressed on colored vinyl.
Various Artists - Searching For The Now Vol. 6 7 inch
(Slumberland) [SL95] $4.50
Searching For The Now 6 continues to fire on all cylinders with an
excellent UK pairing. On side one, Welsh pop mavens THE SCHOOL deliver a
smashing cover of late Left Banke tune "And Suddenly." Taking their cues
from Brian Wilson, sunshine pop, and classic Phil Spector girl-group
sounds, The School joins Camera Obscura, Saturday Looks Good To Me, and
Lucky Soul in bringing '60s references bang up to date. On side two is
GEORGE WASHINGTON BROWN-the latest nom de rock of PETE GOFTON, who got his
start in teenage sensations KENICKIE and has also recorded as J XAVERRE.
The two songs here are brand new, exclusive, and perfect examples of
Gofton's quirky pop vision, full of production twists and surprising turns
of melody. Pressed on colored vinyl.
Various Artists - Various Artists Part 2 12 inch (8BIT)
[8BIT023EP] $12.25
8Bit releases the second part of their various artists series. This is
a
strong three-tracker with tracks from Simon Baker, Butch and Ali Kuru.
Support from: Karotte, David Squillace, Jay Haze, Audiofly, Tiefschwarz,
2000 And One, Shinedoe, Solomun, Anthony Collins, Kreon, Marc Romboy,
Gorge, Nick Curly, and M.A.N.D.Y.
Various Artists - Somero 2009 2x12 inch (Cecille Records)
[CECSEASON001EP] $22.00
Cécille Records honors two seasons with a special double vinyl series,
starting with Somero 2009 -- tracks chosen for their perfect summertime
vibe. With exclusive tracks from DJ Sneak, Reboot, Robert Dietz, Negru vs.
Boola, Leon, and Nima Gorji.
Various Artists - Lo-Fi Soundsystem 12 inch (Echospace)
[INTRUSION004EP] $10.75
Echospace presents a killer selection of steppa's riddims and tropical
grooves. Intrusion's "Velocity In A Minor" is all about being playful with
a sequence and splicing. Lo-Fi Soundsystem makes their first 12" appearance
on Intrusion with a track given a second lease on life from its scarce 45
release. A mystical midnight groove reworked by Stephen Hitchell. Mildiou
crosses into territory comparable to Intrusion's "Tswana Dub" or the
atmospheric dub side of Rhythm & Sound, and "Oceanview" paints a picture of
oceanic vapor haze.
Various Artists - Kraut Rock LP (Cleopatra) [CLP3015LP]
$16.75
Tangerine Dream, Can, Brainticket, Amon Guru. "Limited edition 12"
vinyl
compilation featuring the pioneers of the Kraut Rock genre - a perfect
introduction to this little known but powerfully influential genre."
Von
Spar - Hybolt 12 inch (Italic) [ITALIC085EP] $10.25
"Von Spar is a four piece pop group from Cologne, Germany who have
already
released several 12 inches and two highly acclaimed albums. For their new
single HyBoLT (Hypersonic Boundary Layer Transition), Von Spar draw
inspiration from the Krautrock of the 1970's and take their love of
experimentation to the dance floor with a real disco happening, all
refracted psychedelic colour and fluid dreams. Musically, Von Spar's policy
of ecstasy has produced a brilliant piece of prog-disco, one that tells of
cosmic pop science and combines Can's spirit of discovery with the
dance-floor instinct of Giorgio Moroder. But the result is no sentimental
reconstruction of musical styles of the past; instead, 'HyBoLT' is a
contemporary amalgam from the musical molecular kitchen. As guest and
remixer for their new single, Von Spar invited Norwegian new-disco king
Prins Thomas (Full Pupp, Internasjonal, Oslo) on board. In his
interpretation, Afro-disco percussion meets the melodic grace and
dreaminess of La Düsseldorf. On a journey lasting almost 14 minutes, Prins
Thomas leads the music through a broad spectrum of aesthetic and stylistic
positions and combines them into an electrifying whole an intoxicated disco
trip. The second remix is vinyl exclusive and comes from Cologne's ndie
house wonder Popnoname aka Jens-Uwe Beyer. His version is very melodic,
with strong synths, jangly reverbed guitars and throbbing bass. The new
single HyBoLT also serves as a first peek into Von Spar's new album, whose
release has been announced for 2010."

De
Kift - Krankenhaus LP (Domino Sound) [DOMINO025LP] $12.75
"De Kift's second album, Krankenhaus, originally a 1993 compact disc,
is
released for the first time ever on vinyl. The music on the album is
difficult to describe, there simply aren't the reference points to make it
easily classifiable. Thematically, Krankenhaus is a guided tour through the
terror and tedium of war and its effects. Musically, it does have guitar,
bass, and drums, but there is also a brass section, scrappy and heartfelt,
making plenty of appearances throughout, and some woodwinds, an accordion,
piano, violin, and hand clapping show up here and there. Imagine a scene
from a Berlin cabaret of the '30s as written by the New Deal's Federal
Theater Project. But, in, well, Dutch. And using World War authors and
poets as lyricists, but seen through the lens of the Dutch squatters
movement that De Kift and The Ex came up through. If Hanns Eisler had been
a collaborator with The Ex, you'd be close, but still not quite there. De
Kift sets their music to the stories and poems of authors Jan Arends, Erich
M. Remarque and Wolfgang Borchert and comes up with an album that brings a
new beauty to the words and a remarkably original amalgamation. This
release comes in a tip-on sleeve with original artwork and is accompanied
by a 16-page booklet with lyrics in Dutch, English and German."
Mammut - Mammut LP (Long Hair) [LHC077LP] $28.25
"Originally released in 1971, this album is an intense and bombastic
hybrid
between heavy fuzz acid guitar, instinctive free rock improvisations and
some lyrical, classical influenced interludes/fragments. Mammut played in
an impressive and convincing manner their conception of an psychedelic rock
opera. For that each title includes the name Mammut. The opening track
'Bird Mammut' is a groovy, percussive, crazy psychedelic affair featuring
an avalanche of drums, trippy organs, bluesy e-guitar and wistfull flute
passages. 'Classical Mammut' delivers a short piano interlude, a pleasant
melodic moment. 'Mammut Ecstasy' is a fuzzy heavy psychedelic composition
with furious rhythms, an efficient bass guitar leading theme and some nice
keyboard moves. 'Foot Machine Mammut' alternates a bluesy pop song with
free guitar jams accompanied by Hammond organ. Perhaps parts of the first
Embryo album are comparable to this. 'Nähgarn Mammut" is their attempt to
be more lyrical and melodic, while the album closes with 14 minutes of
'Mammut Opera,' which show Mammut at their best. Dark sounds with hints of
Amon Düül II, heavy blues rock with all sorts of strange, ethnic and gothic
touches combined in their music. Altough the band themselves quoted Deep
Purple in rock as a major influence, their spirit was purely Krautrock.
Their sole album is a legendary rarity. Comes with 1 bonus track,
comprehensive insert, digitally remastered. A classic! Don't miss it!"
Modulo 1000 - Nao Fale Com Paredes LP (World In Sound)
[RFR004LP] $50.75
2009 repress. Stunning reissue of this obscure Brazilian album from
1970.
"Really wild, psychotic, exotic, progressive psychedelic beast from Brasil
-- all those attributes in an extreme way! Long freaked-out tracks driven
by furious organ and massive fuzz -- wahwah guitar assaults, also added
distorted vocals (Portuguese lyrics) that creep deep inside your cranium --
one of the best ever! Comes in usual World In Sound quality with original
amazing triple fold out cover that is beyond believe."
Soul Fantastics/Los Silvertones, The - El Mismo/El Baile De La
Arana 7 inch (Soundway) [SNDW7007EP] $9.75
The tracks featured on this very rare and limited release offer a
glimpse
of the unique tropical music created in Panama during the fertile decades
of the 1960s and 1970s. Both songs are not included on the Panama!2
compilation and are exclusive to this release. The Soul Fantastics'
flute-driven track "El Mismo" is a soul workout with heavy influences from
the States, featuring jazz flautist Felix Wilkins. Los Silvertones present
an ode to Arana with "El Baile De La Arana" -- a bossa nova/funk-inspired
jam, sure to provoke some heavy hustling in the discotecas.
Steve Hillage - Live At Deeply Vale 2xLP (Ozit) [OZIT8007LP]
$38.75
"Live At Deeply Vale Festival 1978 transports the listener back to one
of
the last truly great festivals staged in the UK that decade, a weekend's
worth of music that fearlessly ranged across both the traditional rock
range and the upcoming punk movement, before climaxing with a Hillage set
that the guitarist himself reflects, '...(sounds) as exciting now as Live
Herald was back then.' -- Goldmine Magazine USA. A must have for any and
all fans of Hillage, Gong, Canterbury, Avant Garde and just good British
psych in general."
Strawberry Window - Strawberry Window LP (World In Sound)
[RFR031LP] $45.75
"Strawberry Window hailed from the San Francisco Bay Area's East Bay
music
scene in the mid '60s and were truly one of the 'early birds' and
innovators who made their own distinct brand of rock-n-roll. They played in
a heavy-psychedelic-garage style, sounding somewhat reminiscent of the
Jefferson Airplane, (early) Mad River, Quicksilver Messenger Service and
Frumious Bandersnatch. These previously unreleased recordings have survived
for the last four decades in a box on a shelf in a band member's closet.
Meticulous care and detail has been taken to master these recordings with a
fresh, open approach, while ensuring that the sound and integrity of the
vintage songs remained intact. The amazing music of this guitar based
quartet ranges from catchy electric folk tunes and 'West Coast' garage rock
to raw energetic acid jams lasting over 10 minutes. You'll be impressed by
the (stereo) sound quality throughout their ten original cuts not to
mention their freaky live version of J D Loudermilk's 'Tobacco Road.' It's
an out right shame that this talented bunch were not signed to a record
deal back then. (In 1968 they switched guitar players, added a girl singer
and changed their name to the Dandelion Wine and recorded several songs and
also released a private pressing of a 4 song 7 inch EP.) World In Sound
presents for the first time ever, the music of and the history behind this
talented group of songwriters and wild performers known as the Strawberry
Window. The LP-version will be 180g vinyl, handmade extra heavy sleeve,
poster and a 3-track 7" EP, in total 60 minutes of intense but melodic
performances that will take you on a trip back to the halcyon days of the
Summer of Love. Discover it, it's truly a masterpiece from the roots of the
legendary SF-Sound!"
Various Artists - A Orillas del Magdalena LP (Domino Sound)
[DOMINO024LP] $12.00
Coastal Cumbias from Colombia's Discos Fuentes. "Call and response
wailing,
percussionists that play a measure then disappear, backwards accordions and
a persistent, loping bassline comprise some of the elements that make up
the Cumbia. Born on the banks of the Magdalena River in coastal Colombia,
this infectious music represents a marriage of African, Spanish, and
Indigenous influences. Antonio Fuentes began recording Colombia's music in
1934, founding his country's first record label, Discos Fuentes. These 12
gems -- released between the mid 1950s and the mid '70s -- are lovingly
selected from the Discos Fuentes catalogue. Includes tracks by Andres
Landero, Los Corraleros de Majagual, Los Guacharacos, and Nafer Duran
amongst others. This release comes in a tip-on sleeve."
