MOD02-03

MO-DU is Jan Jiskra.

“With any type of creation you create what’s inside of you, subconsciously that influences you.

Anything that take you off into another world, escapism, thats what I like. I’m not so crazy about the reality of everything. I like a lot of fantasy, and that’s what I try to create, to get away, to become moved”

What Was Before?

Krystian Shek’s work is nothing if not eclectic. He’s worked out his own mode of Namlookian ‘environmental music’ across previous Carpe Sonum discs (and, prior to that, over numerous FAX editions), whether building towering edifices of stratospheric ambient or subtly shaking the foundations through an array of well-coifed beatstuffs. Navigating its way through a sensuous variety of moods, his new one prides itself on establishing a beachhead of shimmering synthetic calm amidst a clutch of frothy, downtempo sequences. Shek’s modus operandi here is restrained, tentative, almost dub-like, most pronounced in the delay-shimmer of the near four-minute “Thumbnails”, which, truth be told, could go on for another fourteen and never lose its poised, artfully crafted power. Later on, the delightful, sweet bromides laced within “Cinnamon Rolls” does much of the same thing, walking a gauzy, late-winter reverb-sheen with all the elegance Mssrs. Yayga, Grad_U, and others of similar persuasion execute. In other words, another marvelously wrought Shek-attack of pearlescent electronica, buffed with a fine shammy and shining on like crazy diamonds.

Radical Chill Out

Gabriel Le Mar’s music seems to have no limits in the breadth and scope of its magisterial remit. Equally savvy in exposing both the tyranny of the beat and the elegaic vastness of skyrushing ambience, his abilities are notable for their exquisite sense of sonic dynamics, atmospheres comprised of a veritable melting canvas of colorful brushstrokes and beautifully tinted auras. On what is called their open source project RCO—meaning Radical Chill Out—Le Mar and regular cohort Dr. Motte energize the psychedelic personal spaces first eked out by Terence McKenna’s philosophical headstates (and whose think tank motifs spice up the beat-burnished rhythmic vortices of “Cutnotree”), gene-spliced with mid 90s’ IDioMatics, and the gentle, machine-code blurp so beloved of others of similar stripe, era, and ilk (re: the Black Dog, Atom Heart, etc.). There is something warmly nostalgic and welcoming in the duo’s softly shifting, slo-mo techno throb, a sense of the ‘new’ if you will, albeit one that embraces the reverberant, tactile maxims from those many decades ago. Brought to bear on new ears and realized with contemporary equipment to match, RCO chrome-stamp a gripping slab of new cold fusion.

The In Sound from Way Out!

If you’ve been hungering for a return to the great and legendary synthi environs of krautrock’s hoary yesteryears, look no further than the work of the appropriately nicked duo of Dividenthal & Aumgn. Upon experiencing the sweeping analog vistas of their debut for Carpe Sonum, one might imagine a couple of hirsute, cloaked avatars hunching over banks of keyboards and vintage ‘tronix, swaying in penitent hypnosis. Actually, the two gents behind the enigmatic moniker are none other than longtime electronic mavens Lee Anthony Norris (aka Norken, Metamatics, Nacht Plank, et al) and Matt Hillier (aka Ishq, Indigo Egg, and dozens of others), who’ve decided to set their controls for the heart of the galaxy on this enthralling slice of primo post-Teutonic space juice. And lest you think they’ve gone the way of endless Tangerine Dream/Klaus Schulze clones past and present, disavow yourself of that notion immediately—the two have a long history of generating wonderfully awry sonic textures that are at once peculiar, perplexing, and profound. If anything, the closest antecedent for these six tracks of fetching interstellar blip ’n’ tickle are Julian Cope’s Queen Elizabeth project, as well as the pioneering studies found throughout the catalogs of Oskar Sala, Charles Cohen, and plenty of other hip critters tickling the fancies of their beloved Buchlas, Moogs, ARPs, and suchlike. What it all boils down to is that this is utterly spellbinding stuff, fleet of touch, percolating to the muse of the two lads’ own analogics, and with sci-fi imagination to burn.

Soundtracks for Winter Departures

ILUITEQ is the ambient music project founded by Sergio Calzoni and Andrea Bellucci, renowned musicians of the Italian experimental scene, with several albums released under various monikers and bands.
(Orghanon, Colloquio, Red Sector A, Subterranean Source)

With their debut album the duo explores the many facets of ambient music with a meticulous attention to sound design and smooth melodic arrangements. All the tracks have been conceived with a unique palette of sound timbres, making use of a wide range of sampling and synthesis techniques (granular, wavetable, FM, additive).
The sound is further enhanced by parts of electric guitar, acoustic piano and field recordings.

Instilled by the colours of winter, the music evokes the act of
leaving for uncertain destinations…
