A Tremendous River

LONDON
2014-2022A collection of melodies, harmonies and textures recorded over the
last few years. Waves of sound, slowly drifting along.

Recorded at various locations and across a number of years, the
tracks provide a patient pause in a world of busy chaos and movement.

Rotherhithe includes recordings of an old piano in the bottom of
the entrance to the Thames Tunnel Shaft in London. Echoes of piano
chords bounced around the cavernous space.

Boxing Day, recorded on the day that inspires its name, includes
swells of synths created and edited from various sound sources. A
time for reflection, coming up to the end of another year, the track
moves along at a contemplative pace.

Pine Trees is inspired by the atmosphere of David Lynch’s Twin
Peaks–a show which became a lockdown favourite, and helped to capture the energy of the dark winter nights.

Harmony, with a sample from popular philosophical orator Alan Watts,
is one of the oldest tracks on the album. It plants the seeds of a
sound that began many years ago, but continues to this day. The
track layers multiple guitars on top of one another to produce a
vast ocean roar.

Devotology

Devotology is the study of cosmic devotion, its role in the achievement of astrosis and devotional practice in Astronism.

“Devotology” was created between late 2022 and 2023. I initially composed and recorded “Polytheism” in December 2022 as a ten minute dark drone Ambient piece and returned to it a few months later and was inspired to add more synth parts and keys etc which progressed the track with a deeper spiritual or other worldly sensibility I bounced back and forth between other projects and built the final mix and arrangement knowing that it felt like the beginning of a possible theme.

Track three came next “Auroral Devotion” [but under a different working title] in April 2023 some random sound design experimentation lead me to the main shifting polyphonic pad drone, I kept doodling and experimenting with various other synths and played various parts until I arrived pretty quickly with part 1 of this piece.

I sensed that the track could be longer but I didn’t want to just simply arrange the existing elements as they where so I got heavily into playing around with the source material which was purely analogue to began with. I decided to explore within the digital realm to achieve an unusual mood and aesthetic for the second part that subtly mutates & drifts into other sonic dimensions.

The final piece to be recorded was track three “Sol” recored in late summer of 2023 which was inspired by the sound of my malfunctioning Solar panel pump system which was in need of a service. I climbed into my attic storage space with my Zoom H1 recorder and captured various cycles the pump was now making, these unusual sounds became drones and eerie mechanical pulses & clonks which where loped and manipulated in various ways. The addition of some poly synth parts, mono leads and FX added a more musical feel to the strange foundations.

The idea that this sound came from my solar panel system and basically the power of the sun made me think about our brightest star and how important it is for our existence and it led me to the concept of an album based on ancient and modern worship of celestial bodies in their many forms.

I saw a connection between the other tracks that somehow had a cosmic fascination and everything just fell into place it seemed.

Brain Storm: Adventures in Hypoxia

Newcomer David Michael Matuch proclaims on the first track to his debut Carpe Sonum long-player “Soft, In the Head”, but as this wonderful album proceeds apace, one might be better inclined to think SF writer Thomas Disch’s short story title, “Fun With Your New Head”. This disc’s gonna do your noggin in for sure, because Matuch has a trick or two up his sleeve that other wannabe electronic muckrakers can but merely galavant about in. Take “Lost At Shore”, for instance. Sure, there’s the requisite oceanic wishy-wash but look more closely at the reefs and your eyes take in all kinds of strange, synthetic life teeming about the anemones, talking in long digitized broadstrokes and alien tongues lost in weird dialog. “Neural Highway (Joyride)” is acutely Orb-like in its engaging moonbounce, traveling the pathways energetically thanks to a phalanx of sprightly marimba and the kind of trippy surrealism Thomas Dolby made a big deal of years ago when his mind’s eye crashed the gateway. “Cerebral Vortex” turns the modular tables so suddenly you might be caught unawares, tumbling down infinite rabbitholes of abyssal synth, vibrating drones, and austere creepiness, but once you quickly right yourself, Matuch’s gift of atmospheric gab situates your head in a more serene place. The eleven minutes of the successive “Brain Storm” promises all manner of psychic turbulence, but fear not: across its vast, engulfing timespan the affect is more like a welcoming, deeply-earned REM sleep than anything catastrophic. Matuch enables your moodstates so expertly you’re left pretty agog at the disc’s past magnificence once the post-classical, string-soaked elegance of “Mindset” brings the album to a foregone conclusion.

Outland

The Outland album series was a collaborative endeavor by the visionary US bassist-producer Bill Laswell and the late German musician Pete Namlook that pushed the boundaries of dark ambient and electronic music. Spanning five albums released over a thirteen-year period from 1994, this new boxset serves as a testament to the creative synergy between the two masterminds. At the time the duo joined forces, the New York-based Bill Laswell was already a famous producer with a massive client list that included cutting-edge rock, pop, funk, jazz and electronic artists, but he had also founded the Axiom label in 1989 and been responsible for groundbreaking work in genres that included ambient, dub and world music. Pete Namlook was recognized as a pioneering figure in the ambient techno scene, having founded the label FAX +49-69/450464 in his native Frankfurt in 1992. Outland became a fusion of their individual musical sensibilities that resulted in a unique set of releases. At the heart of the series is an exploration of sound as a vehicle for emotion and contemplation, with Laswell’s signature basslines and experimental soundscapes interweaving seamlessly with Namlook’s ethereal textures and intricate sonic layering. Each album is characterized by a sense of expansiveness, taking listeners on a voyage through rarely charted sonic dimensions. All have the ability to evoke a wide range of emotions and have their own distinctive sonic palette, ranging from ambient tranquility to cosmic intensity. Outland has endured as an influential touchstone, its impact felt not only in its captivating soundscapes but also in its invitation to engage in deep introspection and cosmic contemplation. With each album, the duo beckoned listeners to transcend the mundane and embark on a sonic voyage into the extraordinary, where sound becomes a conduit for spiritual and artistic expression. The lavish matte-finish boxset opens to the five Outland albums in separate matte sleeves, with all-new designs, and all audio completely remastered. This box also contains a new addition to the Outland series — an album of dense, bass space drone by Bill Laswell, entitled Blackland. The boxset also contains an exclusive card with an essay about the project written by Bill in July 2023.
