Broadcast on KPFA radio on David Tudor’s 39th birthday (January 20, 1965), this historic concert with John Cage thundered through the sculpture court of the San Francisco Museum of Art on January 16, 1965, before a capacity audience that included such Bay Area arts dignitaries as Darius Milhaud. The volume level was raucous, and live electronic music has never sounded more vibrant. Opening with a work performed on a single cymbal, with contact microphones agitated by a wide gamut of objects, and concluding with speakers outside the performance space interacting with ones next to the audience, this was truly an affair to remember, and is presented here together with background notes and images. Includes a performance of Christian Wolff’s For 1, 2 or 3 People.
